Amantaka

Amantaka is an elegant luxury resort, located at the edge of Luang Prabang. Housed in a set of French colonial buildings, once a former provincial hospital, it’s now cleverly renovated with wide open spaces, high ceiling hallways and surrounded with mango and palm-studded gardens. In not so distance, the glittering temple of Mount Phousi, illuminated like a jewel by night, hovers overhead. To the east, Mekong River is a short walk from the hotel.

Amantaka Resort has twenty-four cream suites, centred around a shady garden. All suites are spacious, with dusky-green French shutters and high ceilings beneath a low-slung red-tiled roof. Rooms are elegantly furnished with modern facilities, pretty louvered doors open onto a courtyard, where loungers are placed under the mango trees. The smaller rooms are of comfortable size, while the bigger ones are divided into several spaces; the master bedroom, a relaxing room and a private pool.

The restaurant at Amantaka offers a delicious menu, influenced by both the Lao and French schools of cuisine. The Amantaka Spa boasts steam and sauna rooms and a double Jacuzzi. There’s a tennis court, well stocked gym, yoga and meditation centre, plus a fantastic deep-green swimming pool. Guided walks can be arranged for city sightseeing and to explore abandoned temples in the surrounds. On call are the town’s experts in traditional arts, ethnology and Lao fine arts.

Stay Amantaka offers 24 suites ranging in size from 70 to 120 square metres each. The suites feature a high ceiling, full-length French windows, views of open courtyard, twin vanities and a separate dressing area. Standard Suites open onto large terraces shaded by mango trees while Pool Suites are more spacious and come with a private swimming pool located just beyond the living area. For those in need of more space can opt for Khan Pool Suite, that come with their own private pool, an outdoor lounging area and a spacious living room and accommodate eight persons.

ChildCare Children are welcome at Amantaka but there are no specific facilities are available. However, extra cots and beds for children under 12s are available and included in price. Babysitting service can be arranged on request.

Dine Luang Prabang has quite a lively restaurant scene, but don’t be surprised if you end up eating every meal at Amantaka. When the food is that good and the surroundings are that beautiful you won’t see the point of eating out. The menu changes daily and there is a choice of European and Lao dishes. Meals are enjoyed in the airy Dining Room or at the Pool Terrace – or shared at a Lao barbecue, complete with a dancing troupe in traditional costumes.

Relax There is a beautiful spa at Amantaka, offering Southeast Asian treatments. It has four spa suites with steam and sauna rooms and a double Jacuzzi. It even has a water pavilion with a cold plunge pools that you can use privately after treatment and a state-of-the-art fitness centre. The treatments range from massages and facials to scrubs and wraps, using its own range of organic products.

Experience In the surrounds, the famous night market is within walking distance. For further exploration, Amantaka can arrange tours to historical cities including Luang Prabang’s waterfalls, ancient Pak Ou caves, and Mekong River. The hotel also has a private 30-seater boat, to accommodate a sofa area, a day bed and a dining area that you can hire for up to 10 people with food, wine and a private butler. We took a cooking class at the local farm with the head chef, which was a wonderful experience.

Location Amantaka is located just south of Mount Phousi in central Luang Prabang, in what was the hospital during French colonial times. Surrounded by peaceful palm-studded gardens, fragrant frangipani groves and a tranquil pool, it has an atmosphere of understated elegance and grace. The resort is a short walk from the temple district and night market.

Getting There Take an international flight to Luang Prabang. Lao Airlines is the national carrier and monopolises the majority of flights in and out of the country, though many code-shares with other air carriers. Amantaka is a 10-minute drive from the airport.

When to go The climate in Luang Prabang remains tropical. The best time to visit is in the months between November and mid-March. During these months the days are pleasant and the nights are chilly. Thereafter the temperature begins to rise and March to May gets very hot. The monsoon arrives in the month of April and peak in August but continues until mid-October. Travel is difficult during these months. Avoid travelling during March-April and August.
