Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel, Luang Prabang, Laos - Asian Geographical Adventures

Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel lies just walking distance from Luang Prabang's famed night market. This beautiful former palace, built in colonial style, nestles in its own well-kept grounds, and is the former home of a Laotian royalty. This award-winning hotel with a colonial exterior still retains a regal charm, by the rich and colourful interiors. Located within the heritage site, the hotel is an ideal jumping-off point for exploring the area and tranquil refuge at the end of the day.

The Maison Souvannaphoum hotel has only 24 rooms. The property is divided into the main hotel block, known as the Garden Wing and the old French colonial house known as La Residence Wing. Most of the rooms are in a new Garden Wing, with views of the pool or gardens. The La Residence Room boasts colonial architecture with colourful Laotian furnishings. The top rooms in the Residence Wing are much more spacious and come with claw-footed bathtubs and most have balconies.

For a small hotel, Maison Souvannaphoum has big-league amenities; the Elephant Blanc restaurant serves modern Indo-Chinese cuisine. It has a 10-course Laos menu, the ideal way to taste the regional dishes of Laos in style. Nearby, is a wonderful cool swimming pool and the hotel’s spa run by the Thai group The Angsana. There are bicycles ready for guests to explore the town and surrounds.

Stay Maison Souvannaphoum has only 24 Rooms and Suites. These are located in the Garden Wing and La Residence. Most Garden Wing rooms have a balcony with a low-pillared balustrade that allows a good view of the surrounds. In the La Residence Wing of Maison Souvannaphoum are the Residence Twin rooms. Champa Suite, also known as the Princess Room comes with a bathtub, separate living and lounge area with views of the garden.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at the Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel but there are no specific facilities available. However, babysitting service can be arranged on request. There are interconnecting rooms in the garden wing which do work well for families of four.

Dine The poolside Elephant Blanc is the main restaurant. Breakfast is buffet type in the restaurant located just behind the reception. Later in the day, we tried the buffalo steak baguettes by the pool and it was great as well. Dinner was in the Maison Souvannaphoum grounds, accompanied by four musicians. Our Feast of the Prince, a 10-dish Laotian tasting menu provided the best regional tastes distilled into a memorable meal.

Relax The grounds around the Maison Souvannaphoum are well manicured. The pergola between reception and the rooms provide shade from the hot Laotian sun with an elephant sculpture not far away. The pool wasn’t massive, but it was big enough, sparkling clean and there was enough shade. The spa you cannot miss! Asian-inspired recipes such as Rice Soya Body Polish and Sesame Ginger Brilliance Body Polish are fragrantly applied to your body and nimbly kneaded through your muscles to soothe all aches away.

Experience Those who like local textiles and handicrafts will like to visit the nearby night market. Beware though, the night market here is massive and in my view too big! It’s difficult to walk into the town at night without having to squeeze your way past 4 rows of stalls that stretch for what must be 500 metres.

Location Maison Souvannaphoum is located close to Luang Prabang's night market and is within walking distance of the Mekong River and Luang Prabang's temples, restaurants and cafes.

Getting There Take an international flight to Luang Prabang. Lao Airlines is the national carrier and monopolises the majority of flights in and out of the country, though many code-shares with other air carriers. Maison Souvannaphoum is approximately a 15-minute drive from the airport.

When to go The climate in Luang Prabang remains tropical. The best time to visit is in the months between November and mid-March. During these months, the days are pleasant and the nights are chilly. Thereafter the temperature begins to rise and March to May gets very hot. The monsoon arrives in the month of April and peak in August but continues until mid-October. Travel is difficult during these months. Avoid travelling during March-April and August.
