Nong Kiau Riverside Resort is an eco-lodge, set on the banks of the scenic Nam Ou River in the northern town of Nong Khiaw, Laos. The resort holds a beautiful location on the banks of the river with all bungalows having beautiful views over the water. It forms a perfect launch pad for exploring this remote but interesting northern part of Laos, home to the indigenous K’hmu and Hmong villages, known for their colourful and unique culture.
Surrounded with beautiful gardens, Nong Kiau Riverside has just 15 bungalows. All are spacious with 40sqm of space, furnished in a traditional style with all the modern conveniences, and come with a large private balcony so you can enjoy the views. The on-site restaurant, occupying a picturesque spot serves all meals focussed on traditional and Thai cuisines. For those who want a change of taste, there are several local restaurants in the surrounds.
The Nong Kiau Riverside resort is located in the north of Laos at the confluence of the Nam Ou and the Houay Houn and is surrounded by breath-taking mountain scenery of Karst mountains and valley filled with lush forest and paddy fields. Adventure seekers will find interesting treks and mountain biking trails through local villages and virgin forest. There are opportunities for kayaking, fishing and tube rafting on the Nam Ou River, or enjoy a cooking class with the hotel chef.

All are built with natural materials and stilted on the river’s edge. Spacious rooms (40 sqm) are furnished in traditional style with twin or double beds draped in mosquito nets and modern bathrooms with running hot water. Each has a large private river-facing balcony with stunning views of the river and surrounding mountains. There is no AC as it not required most of the year but there is a fridge, room heaters and 3G Wi-Fi in all rooms.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay here but there are no specific facilities available for children. However, an extra bed can be provided, upon request.
Dine The in-house restaurant at the Nong Kiau Riverside serves a fusion of Laotian, Thai and Western cuisine. The inclusive buffet breakfast includes freshly baked bread and croissants, filter coffee, yoghurt, fruits and freshly squeezed juices. There is also salami, ham & Cheddar cheese with eggs to order. There is also a selection of cafés and restaurants in close proximity to the property.
Relax Guests can take leisurely walks in the surrounds or relax in the resort’s garden. Nong Kiau Riverside has a small library with a lounge.
Experience There is a lot to do around Nong Kiau Riverside for guests who like trekking and the outdoors. There are short walks to nearby villages or you can rent a bicycle to explore the surrounds. The landscape is stunning and a number of K’hmu and Hmong villages can be found along the road. Guests can go kayaking on the Nam Ou River or hire a small fishing boat for an extraordinary view of the sunset. Local companies organise treks to the Pha Toke Cave and Tube rafting up the river.
Location Nong Kiau Riverside is located in the town of Nong Kiau in northern Laos, it can be accessed either by road or boat from Luang Prabang or from Muang La further up the river.
Getting there 14-hour international flight to either Bangkok or Vientiane followed by a 1-hour flight to Luang Prabang and a 3-hour transfer. Best to do as part of a longer journey.
When to go Laos enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round. The cooler, drier months of the year are from November to March; however, temperatures rarely drop below 22°C during the day. Humidity is highest between May and September, when sunbursts follow tropical downpours and temperatures can climb to 35°C. However, the average year-round temperature is a pleasant 25°C.
