Turgen Valley is a scenic mountain valley east of Almaty, set within the Ile-Alatau National Park and valued for its forests, rivers, alpine meadows and easy access to the northern Tien Shan. It is best known for its waterfalls, including the popular Bear Waterfall, as well as walking trails and picnic spots that make it a straightforward nature escape from the city. The valley also leads towards higher mountain landscapes, archaeological sites and summer pastures, giving it more depth than a simple roadside stop. For travellers, Turgen works well as a relaxed day excursion combining fresh air, light walking and attractive mountain scenery.
A range of thrilling experiences handpicked by our experts. Don’t see one that’s just right for you? No problem. Our local insiders will create precisely what you want.
The classic Turgen outing is the walk to Bear Waterfall, the valley’s best-known natural highlight. The trail is manageable for most visitors and leads through forested mountain scenery to a lively cascade in a narrow gorge. It is the easiest way to experience Turgen’s fresh air, river landscape and accessible soft-adventure appeal.
Turgen is known for a wider network of waterfalls, not just the main Bear Waterfall. Exploring these trails reveals the valley’s mix of conifer forest, streams and rocky mountain scenery. For travellers who enjoy gentle walking and nature rather than strenuous trekking, this is one of the valley’s most rewarding experiences.
Start at the Turgensai Visitor Centre for orientation before heading into the gorge. It serves as the main gateway to the area and helps frame the valley as more than a quick photo stop. For first-time visitors, it is a useful place to understand routes, landscapes and the broader setting of Turgen Gorge.
Turgen Valley works especially well when combined with nearby Issyk Lake on a day excursion from Almaty. The pairing brings together waterfalls, forested gorge scenery and a beautiful alpine lake, giving a fuller impression of the eastern Almaty region. It is one of the strongest nature combinations for travellers with limited time.
Add the Golden Man archaeological museum for a cultural contrast to the valley’s natural scenery. Often paired with Turgen and Issyk routes, it introduces the Saka heritage of the region and makes the day feel more rounded. It is particularly worthwhile for travellers who prefer some historical depth alongside mountain landscapes and light walking.
A stop at a local trout farm is one of the valley’s more relaxed pleasures. It adds a rural, local dimension to the outing and breaks up the day between walks and viewpoints. For many visitors, this simple countryside experience helps make Turgen feel less like a sightseeing stop and more like a rounded day in nature.
