Nihi Sumba Island | Luxury Holidays on remote Indonesian islands | AsianGeographicalAdventures.com

Sumba, Indonesia

Nihi Sumba Island, is an upscale jungle resort, set on a private beach on the island of Sumba in Indonesia. This lesser known island with spectacular landscapes offers a perfect setting for truly romantic escapes but it still remains a secret among tourists. Reached by an hour’s flight from Bali, Nihi Sumba now offers luxurious accommodation on one of the world’s most remote islands, that is becoming an outpost to world-class surfing, sport fishing, hiking and host of other activities.

Tucked amongst the trees, Nihi Sumba Island features just 32 villas available with one, two and three-bedrooms. Hand-built by local craftsmen using local materials, all the thatched roofed villas are an epitome of understated luxury, featuring an elegant open-plan design with air-conditioning and terrace offering panoramic views. Dining venues are beautifully set along the beach so you are within easy reach of your water activities and the pool or your private villas.

Situated uphill and overlooking the Nihi Sumba’s beach is a swimming pool area lined with sunloungers. Nestled under a grove of Pandanus trees, is the jungle spa where you can receive a complimentary full body massage. Alongside is a rustic boat house which offers a myriad of watersport activities including diving & snorkelling, fishing, kayaking and horse-riding along the beach at moonlight. The resort also offers yoga, meditation and a weekly cooking course.

Nihi Sumba Island Sumba, Indonesia

Stay Nihi Sumba Island comprises of just 32 villas, including one, two and three-bedroom villas. Each is designed in local style, crowned by conical roofs thatched with local Alang Alang grass and built with local materials. Interiors are open-plan, reflecting simple Indonesian architecture and furnished with four-poster beds, teak furniture and calming, sand-coloured textiles. Each villa is perched upon a terrace with a spacious outdoor veranda, mod cons, and private pools.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Nihi Sumba Island but there are no specific child related facilities. However, the living room in Lulu Amahu villas can be turned into a second bedroom and has its own bathroom; Ratu villas have lush tropical gardens to run around in; the one in the Wamoro Estate has a second floor and the two-bedroom Pantai Villas, are all ideal for families.

Dine Dining options at the Nihi Sumba Island include Ombak, the main restaurant. Sheltered beneath a spectacular thatched roof with sweeping ocean views, it is a perfect spot for breakfast and dinner. Chef Bernard Prim makes the most of the garden’s organic produce and catch of the day to create a contemporary style menu inspired by Indonesian cuisine. Lunch at the Nio Beach Club, located near the infinity pool, which is directly over the beach can include fish, salads and items from the grill.

Relax In addition to the pools in every villa, Nihi Sumba Island has an infinity pool lined with sunloungers and pergola-shaded bales. However, the highlight here is the ‘Spa Safari’ experience, where guests trek through the rainforest and atmospheric villages to alfresco spa Nihioka. Perched on a cliff between two pristine beaches, it offers Sumbanese Dream treatment that combines a mineral-rich foot bath, relaxing massage, lavender-scented scrub and aloe-infused body mask.

Experience Besides the 90-minute trek through the rolling hills to the Nihi Oka Spa Safari, there is much to do at the Nihi Sumba Island. There is a beautifully hand-crafted outdoor Bale for families with books and games, table tennis, pool table and area for children's movie night under the stars. While activity enthusiasts can go paddle boarding down a river to diving offshore, sport fishing, trekking to waterfalls, releasing baby turtles, yoga, horse riding, equine therapy, and surfing.

Location Nihi Sumba Island is in a secluded bay on the remote southwestern coast of Sumba island surrounded by tropical forest and rice terraces, to the east of Bali, Indonesia.

Getting there Fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali and have a chance to explore as you stay overnight, then take a connecting flight in the morning to Tambolaka airport on Sumba Island. From there, a 90-minute drive through the magnificent countryside brings you to Nihi Sumba Island.

When to go The best time to visit is in June and July, though the seas are clear and quiet from April. In most parts of Indonesia, the wet season falls between October and April and the dry season between May and September. December and January see Indonesia at its most humid and rain tends to come in sudden tropical downpours, but it can also rain for more prolonged periods.
