Group Tour
Delhi to Delhi – 14 Days
This is a small-group tour of Spiti Valley in Himachal, India. We run the smallest groups in the industry, with an exceptionally low guest-to-guide ratio, for a more personal, low-impact travel style and access to quieter, more remote places—often leading to closer, more natural wildlife moments where nature is part of the journey.
Spiti is the Trans-Himalayan “Little Tibet”—a high-desert world of wind-carved valleys, whitewashed villages and prayer flags snapping in thin air, where the culture, language and monasteries feel closer to the Tibetan plateau than to the rest of India. This journey threads together three distinct Himalayan landscapes: Himachal’s orchard country, the hidden Baspa valley of Kinnaur, and Spiti’s vast, contemplative plateau. Parts of the route follow valleys first travelled on foot by our founder during a Trans-Himalayan expedition—today made far more accessible by road, without losing their remote character.
Beyond the scenery, the experience is defined by living heritage. Sangla Valley—once restricted to protect its culture—offers village trails, local deities and an older Himalayan worldview, while Spiti brings the extraordinary: Tabo’s 1,000-year-old monastery, ancient meditation caves, and cliff-top fort-monasteries watching over the river gorges. With time among Spiti’s iconic high villages and a night beside the turquoise waters of Chandratal, this is a once-in-a-lifetime Himalayan adventure—second only to Ladakh, yet often quieter, wilder, and more intimate.
Note: Book Now and take advantage of the early bird discount: £100 pp.
THANEDAR APPLE ORCHARD STAY: Start in Himachal’s orchard country with a boutique stay in Thanedar–Kotgarh, a quiet hillside known for crisp air and apple estates. Enjoy an easy walk through orchards to historic St Mary’s Church, then choose a scenic drive or forest hike to Hatu Peak (around 11,000 ft+) for wide Himalayan panoramas. A short detour to the clear, photogenic Tani Jubbar Lake adds a peaceful pause before the journey becomes more remote. Evenings are made for bonfires, warm drinks, and a slower mountain rhythm.
SANGLA VALLEY TOUR: Explore Kinnaur’s Sangla Valley, where apple orchards meet the Baspa River and the scenery tightens into dramatic Himalayan terrain. Drive to Chitkul—often searched as the last Indian village before the Tibet border—for traditional wooden architecture and frontier atmosphere, then stop at Rakcham for classic valley views. Walk across to Batseri village for its local temple and timber homes, and follow a forest-and-river trail into Sangla to visit Kamru Fort and the Bering Nag Temple. It’s a strong mix of nature, culture and quieter Himalaya.
SPITI VALLEY ROAD TRIP: Cross into Spiti’s high desert for one of India’s great mountain journeys. Visit Tabo’s remarkable 1,000-year-old monastery and meditation caves, then detour to the cliff-perched Dhankar Monastery before reaching Kaza. Take a full-day circuit to Spiti’s iconic villages—Ki, Chicham, Langza, Hikkim and Komic—crossing the dramatic suspension bridge and visiting the world’s highest post office. Expect vast skies, ancient gompas, and high-altitude landscapes, with sensible pacing for acclimatisation and comfort.
CHANDRATAL LAKE CAMPING: Camp by the turquoise waters of Chandratal, one of the most searched alpine lakes in the Indian Himalaya. Drive from Kaza via Losar and cross Kunzum La (4,590m) into Lahaul, then follow the rugged track along the Chandra River to your meadow campsite. Walk up to the lake for sunset as the colours shift across the water and surrounding peaks, then return at dawn for mirror-like reflections. Luxury-style camping keeps the wilderness feel while maintaining comfort before continuing through Lahaul.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
Journey from orchard-clad Himachal to the raw, high-desert Himalaya on this 14-day small-group Sangla & Spiti adventure, led by expert local guides. Ride the Shatabdi Express, walk through apple orchards to Hatu Peak, then explore Sangla’s villages and forts before crossing into Spiti for ancient monasteries, high-altitude hamlets and vast mountain skies. Camp in luxury-style comfort by turquoise Chandratal, explore remote Lahaul, and return via the Atal Tunnel—seamless, scenic, unforgettable.
Arrive at Delhi Airport and meet our representative for a short, seamless transfer to your hotel in Aerocity, Delhi’s modern business and hospitality district. Check in and take time to recover from your flight—today is intentionally light to help you reset before the mountain journey begins. If you feel like stretching your legs, Aerocity’s cafés and promenades are easy for a gentle stroll, or you may prefer a quiet afternoon by the pool. In the evening, your Tour Leader can brief you on the route ahead—train connections, mountain driving rhythms, and what to keep handy for the next few days.
Pride Plaza Aerocity, Delhi
Pride Plaza Aerocity is a contemporary, full-service hotel in Delhi’s Aerocity district, positioned for quick airport access and uncomplicated stopovers. Close to Indira Gandhi International Airport, it’s a practical choice for late arrivals, early departures, or a short reset between flights, with the added convenience of Aerocity’s restaurant and retail cluster nearby.
Rooms are modern and businesslike, designed for comfort on a short stay rather than boutique character, with dependable in-room essentials and a calm feel that suits transit nights. The overall style is clean and functional, with a scale and layout that works well for groups and corporate travellers as well as leisure guests.
Facilities typically include an outdoor pool, a gym, and a spa—useful after a long-haul flight—plus on-site dining for an easy dinner without needing to cross the city. With the Metro connection in the area, it can also work as a base for a quick run into central Delhi when time allows.
[Chandigarh 3 ½ hr train ride – THANEDAR (2350 M, Shimla) 200 km / 5 ½ - 6 hrs drive.] Early start: depart around 06:30 for the railway station and board the Shatabdi Express, a premium, fast intercity train. Arrive in Chandigarh around late morning and continue by road into the foothills of Himachal. The drive climbs steadily via Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda, with changing scenery from plains to pine forests and orchard country. By late afternoon, reach Thanedar–Kotgarh (2,350m), a quiet hillside known for apple cultivation and crisp mountain air. Check into a boutique retreat and unwind. As dusk falls, gather around an outdoor bonfire for a warm, relaxed first evening in the hills.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Banjara Orchard Retreat, Thanedar
Banjara Orchard Retreat is a small, hillside lodge set above Thanedar, surrounded by apple and cherry orchards on the old Hindustan–Tibet Road, roughly 80 km from Shimla. At around 2,350 m (7,700 ft), the setting is the headline: layered orchard-clad slopes, deodar forests, and—far below—the Sutlej cutting through the gorge. It’s the kind of place that feels intentionally away from the bustle, with days shaped by mountain air and long views.
The retreat’s style is simple, warm, and nature-led rather than “resort” polished, with an emphasis on switching off and leaning into the landscape. Expect homely hospitality and a steady kitchen, plus indoor nooks (library/games) for quieter evenings when the temperature drops.
It’s well placed for short walks and local excursions—Hatu Peak, Kotgarh’s old church, and small lakes and forest trails nearby—making it a gentle, restorative stop before heading deeper into Himachal.
Begin with a gentle morning walk (about 1 hour) through apple orchards to Kotgarh, visiting the charming St Mary’s Church (over 150 years old) before returning to the property by vehicle. After breakfast, choose between a scenic drive or a rewarding hike (around 3 hours, largely through forest) to Hatu Peak—the region’s highest point at roughly 11,000 ft+, with sweeping 360° Himalayan views on clear days. On the return, pause at Tani Jubbar Lake, small but exceptionally clear and photogenic, tucked among cedars near Thanedar. Evening is free for tea, rest, or orchard-side walks.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
After a leisurely breakfast, begin the drive down towards the Sutlej Valley, then climb into the dramatic landscapes of Kinnaur. The road threads along river gorges and terraced hillsides, with views sharpening as you gain altitude. Arrive in Sangla Valley (2,700m) and continue a little beyond the town to a retreat set in an apple orchard beside the Baspa River—a peaceful base with fresh air and mountain stillness. The remainder of the day is unhurried: settle in, take a riverside stroll, or simply enjoy the orchard setting. Option: Detour near Jeori to Sarahan to visit the majestic Bhimakali Temple with Shrikhand Mahadev as backdrop.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Banjara Valley Retreat, Sangla
Banjara Valley Retreat sits in Sangla Valley in Kinnaur, set in an apple orchard on the banks of the Baspa River, with forested slopes rising sharply on both sides. At around 2,700 m (8,860 ft), it’s a high-Himalayan base that feels distinctly cooler and quieter than the lower valleys, with the river’s sound and long mountain views shaping the atmosphere.
Accommodation is relaxed and nature-forward, typically blending lodge-style rooms with more outdoorsy options, keeping the focus on warmth, simplicity, and time in the landscape rather than glossy resort finishes. Communal spaces are designed for lingering—tea, a book, conversation—especially when evenings draw in early.
It works well for soft-adventure days: village walks, gentle hikes along the valley, and short drives to Kinnauri viewpoints and monasteries, returning to a steady kitchen and a calm, orchard-side setting. For travellers heading deeper into Himachal, it’s an easy, restorative stop that still feels properly “in” the mountains.
After breakfast, drive up the Baspa Valley to Chitkul, the last Indian settlement before the Tibet border. Wander through the village lanes, take in the wooden architecture, and visit a small temple built in traditional style. Continue to Nagasthi, the border outpost and last point open to civilians, for a sense of the valley’s frontier geography. On the return, stop in Rakcham, a quiet hamlet framed by river views and deodar forest—ideal for a short stroll and photographs. Back at your retreat, the evening is free for a riverside walk or bonfire time.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Walk across the river to Batseri Village, known for its beautiful local temple and traditional Kinnauri homes. Later, follow a scenic riverside trail through forest towards Sangla, with an en-route stop at a British-era Trout Farm (around 2½ hours on foot). In Sangla, visit Kamru Fort and the Bering Nag Temple, gaining insight into Kinnaur’s layered history and belief systems. Return by vehicle to your retreat (about 20 minutes), with the rest of the day at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
After a leisurely breakfast, begin the drive towards Spiti, where the landscape shifts quickly from orchard valleys to high, arid mountains. Around Sumdo, take a short detour to Giu to see the remarkable mummified monk in meditation posture—an unusual and moving stop that’s deeply rooted in local faith. Continue onward to Tabo, Spiti’s first major settlement, and check in. Later, visit the extraordinary Tabo Monastery, over 1,000 years old, set just a short walk from your stay. If time and energy allow, hike up to the meditation caves for quiet views over the valley.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Hotel Spiti Mud Huts Tabo
Spiti Mud Huts, Tabo is a characterful, mud-built stay near the Tabo helipad, set on the banks of the Spiti River with open views across orchards and fields. It’s deliberately “grounded to nature”, standing apart from the clustered concrete hotels in the village, and works well for travellers who want a quieter setting after the long approach into Spiti.
Accommodation is centred on spacious mud huts and a small selection of rooms, designed for warmth and practicality in the high-desert climate. Interiors lean local and simple rather than glossy, with comfort focused on good beds, solid bathrooms, and a calm atmosphere that suits early nights and unhurried mornings.
A highlight is the on-site Restaurant Mitti, built with mud brick walls and a traditional Spitian roof supported by local wooden poles—an inviting place to come in from the cold and eat well. Overall, it’s a pleasingly authentic base for Tabo’s monastery visits, village walks, and night-sky stargazing, without tipping into back-to-basics.
After breakfast, drive deeper into Spiti following the river corridor through stark cliffs and wide, open valleys. After Sichling, detour to Dhankar Monastery, dramatically perched on a ridge above the confluence—one of Spiti’s most photogenic and historically significant sites. Take time to explore the monastery’s quiet rooms and viewpoints before continuing to Kaza, the region’s administrative hub. Arrive in the afternoon and visit Sakya Tangyud Monastery, known for its distinctive setting and spiritual importance. Later, enjoy a gentle walk through Kaza’s bazaar for cafés, small shops, and an easy feel for daily life in Spiti.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Sakya Abode, Kaza
Sakya Abode is a well-established, comfort-level hotel in Kaza, set in a quieter part of town at the foothills of Spiti’s snow-dusted mountains. Built in a Himalayan architectural style, it’s designed less as a “destination resort” and more as a dependable base for the Spiti circuit, with practical access to Kaza’s services and the surrounding high villages.
Rooms are geared to Spiti’s climate: travellers often mention warm bedding (including heated blankets), spacious layouts, and balconies in some categories, which can make a real difference after long, high-altitude driving days. Expect a straightforward, mountain-hotel finish—comfortable rather than boutique—prioritising warmth, sleep quality, and an easy rhythm.
Facilities are simple but useful, typically including an in-house restaurant and lounge areas, plus basics such as Wi-Fi (often power-dependent in Kaza) and parking. It’s a sensible choice when you want a steady, warm base for excursions to Key, Kibber, Langza, and the wider Spiti valley, returning each evening to reliable food and a calm atmosphere.
After breakfast, set out for a full-day loop through Spiti’s iconic high villages. Begin at Ki Monastery, a classic hilltop gompa with commanding views. Continue into the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, crossing Asia’s highest suspension bridge over a dramatic gorge, then visit Chicham (4,150m). Drive onwards to Langza (4,420m) for the outdoor Buddha statue, then to Hikkim (4,440m) to see the world’s highest post office. Finish at Komic (4,590m)—often cited as one of the world’s highest villages—visiting its monastery before returning to Kaza by early evening.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast, check out and begin the drive out of Spiti, passing the pretty village of Losar as the valley widens and the terrain turns increasingly stark. Climb over Kunzum La (4,590m / 15,060 ft), a dramatic high pass that marks your transition into the Lahaul region. Near Batal, leave the main highway and follow an adventurous 14 km trail alongside the Chandra River to reach a high meadow near Chandratal, a turquoise alpine lake set in a bowl of mountains. Check in to your campsite and take time to settle in. Later, walk up to the lake (about 10 minutes) for a memorable sunset view as the colours change across the water.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Parasol Camps, Chandratal
Parasol Camps is a long-running tented camp at the Chandratal camping ground, used by travellers crossing between Spiti and Lahaul who want a comfortable night in a genuinely remote, high-altitude setting. After the final rough approach road, the camp often feels like an oasis—simple, welcoming, and well set up for the realities of cold evenings and thin air.
Accommodation is typically in Swiss tents with one room and an attached bathroom per tent, giving you privacy and a proper washroom without tipping into “lodge” territory. There’s generally no mains electricity; lighting is usually via solar lamps, so a torch is still sensible for moving around after dark. Bedding is geared for low night temperatures, though conditions can still feel sharp depending on the month.
The social heart is the dining tent, where hot, straightforward meals and constant tea help everyone thaw out and settle in. It’s a good base for stargazing and an early walk/drive towards Chandratal, with the understanding that this is expedition-style comfort—warmth, food, and shelter—rather than luxury infrastructure.
Head out early for sunrise at Chandratal, when the light is soft and the lake is at its calmest. After breakfast, retrace the track back to the main road and continue through rugged, expansive mountain landscapes. Drive past Sissu, Tandi and Keylong, with frequent photo stops as the scenery shifts from Spiti’s high desert to Lahaul’s greener river valleys. By late afternoon, arrive in Gemoor (3,350m) and check in to your Banjara estate stay, set near the Bhaga River on the Leh Highway, just short of Jispa. The evening is free to relax, take a riverside stroll, and enjoy the quieter pace of Lahaul.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Gemoor Khar Banjara, Lahaul
Gemoor Khar Banjara is a heritage manor-house stay in the Gemoor Estate, around 3 km before Jispa on the Manali–Leh highway, overlooking the Bhaga River and the stark, high valleys of Lahaul. It’s positioned as a quiet pause-point on a demanding route, with a sense of history and place that feels very different from standard roadside hotels.
Accommodation is deliberately limited—deluxe and super-deluxe rooms plus a suite—spread across a small cluster of cottages rather than a single block. Interiors lean classic and warm, prioritising comfort in a cold climate (heaters, hot water, and a calm, homely feel), with shared spaces that encourage an early night and a slow morning.
The appeal is the setting and rhythm: steady, well-cooked meals, time to walk by the river, and a straightforward base for nearby gompas and valley viewpoints before pushing on towards Sarchu/Ladakh or returning to Manali. It suits travellers who value atmosphere, warmth, and reliability over resort-style facilities.
After breakfast, take an offbeat drive into a little-explored valley towards Shinkun La (5,100m / 16,750 ft)—a high mountain pass that leads beyond into the Zanskar region of Ladakh. This is a spectacular day for big landscapes, remote hamlets and a real sense of the frontier, with time to stop for photographs and quiet viewpoints along the way. Return the same route to Jispa/Gemoor, and spend the afternoon unwinding by the riverside near Jispa, where the Bhaga River runs clear and cold through the valley. Overnight at your estate stay.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
After a leisurely breakfast, begin the return journey, detouring across the river to the beautifully perched village of Tinno for panoramic valley views and a short walk up to the small gompa. Rejoin the highway and continue past Sissu, then enter the Atal Tunnel from its North Portal—an impressive engineering shortcut that brings you out into the Solang Valley. Drive onwards through Manali and down towards Kullu. Around 10 km short of Kullu, leave the highway briefly to reach Bandrol, a peaceful village setting. Check in to your stay, surrounded by flower gardens and fruit orchards, and make the most of your final mountain evening.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Roots Stay, Kullu
Roots Stay (Roots Café & Stay) is a small, design-led hideaway in Bandrol, around 600 metres off the Kullu–Manali highway, set amid orchards with open views across the Beas valley towards the Pir Panjal range. It’s an easy detour from the main road, yet feels pleasantly removed—ideal for a quiet pause in the Kullu Valley without committing to a bigger resort setting.
Accommodation is deliberately limited (five sunlit rooms), each with an en-suite bathroom and private sit-out. Rooms feature wooden floors and a warm, pared-back look, with practical touches for mountain weather such as oil heaters, plus desks and Wi-Fi for those travelling with a bit of work in the mix.
The heart of the place is the bistro-style café—an inviting stop in its own right—known for regional Indian cooking and a relaxed, “slow space” atmosphere. It suits travellers who care about good food, views, and an intimate scale, rather than extensive facilities.
Years of exploring Asia’s most remote landscapes have strengthened our commitment to preserving nature, local culture, and wildlife. The Spiti Valley Expedition was born from a passion for showcasing this untouched Himalayan wilderness while supporting its fragile ecosystem and ancient traditions.
Inspired by Spiti’s isolated monasteries, rare wildlife such as snow leopards, and resilient communities, we designed this journey to foster responsible travel. Encounters with Buddhist monks, snow leopard trackers, and indigenous villagers reinforced the need for a tour that respects their way of life and deepens appreciation for the region’s unique local culture.
By curating immersive experiences—staying with local families in a small village, engaging with conservation projects, exploring lesser-known trails, and embarking on high altitude treks—we ensure travellers connect deeply with Spiti’s rich heritage and biodiversity. For your safety, a medical kit is provided throughout the expedition. This Spiti Valley tour is more than just an adventure; it is a step towards sustainable tourism, empowering local communities while protecting one of Asia’s last great frontiers.
TRIP STYLE, GROUP & SUPPORT TEAM: This is a guided small-group Himalayan road journey linking orchard-country Himachal with the high desert of Spiti and the alpine wilderness of Chandratal/Lahaul. Expect a steady pace with a few big driving days, some early starts (notably Kelimutu—ignore; here it’s Hatu/Spiti village day and Chandratal sunrise), and short hikes/walks most days. You’ll be supported by an experienced Tour Leader, local guides where required, and professional mountain drivers in well-maintained vehicles. Day-to-day, the team manages road timings, check-ins, permits/checkposts (where applicable), and on-ground problem-solving in remote areas.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS: Accommodation is a mix of boutique mountain retreats, comfortable hotels, and luxury-style camps at Chandratal. Rooming is typically twin/double; single rooms are available with a supplement, subject to availability (more limited at Chandratal). Meals are as per your day-by-day plan (usually breakfast daily; some properties may include dinner in remote locations). In Spiti/Lahaul, menus are simpler and more warming. Safe drinking-water is best handled via sealed bottled water and/or your own reusable bottle with purification.
TRANSPORT, TRANSFERS & EXPERIENCES: Transport combines the Shatabdi Express (Delhi–Chandigarh) with private overland travel through Himachal, Kinnaur, Spiti and Lahaul. Roads are generally good early on, but conditions become narrower, higher and rougher beyond Kinnaur/Spiti—especially the off-road approach to Chandratal. Included experiences are culture-and-landscape led: Thanedar orchard walks and Hatu Peak; Sangla Valley villages (Chitkul/Rakcham/Batseri), Kamru Fort and Bering Nag; Tabo and Dhankar monasteries; Kaza bazaar and high villages (Ki, Chicham, Langza, Hikkim, Komic); Kunzum La crossing into Lahaul; Chandratal sunset/sunrise; offbeat drive towards Shinkun La; Atal Tunnel route back to Kullu.
ALTITUDE, HEALTH & SAFETY: This is a high-altitude itinerary. Max day altitude is Shinkun La 5,091m and the Spiti high-village circuit reaches Komic 4,590m; Kunzum La is 4,551m and Chandratal camp is 4,250m (sleeping high). Expect mild breathlessness on stairs/hills; go slowly, hydrate well, avoid alcohol early on, and tell your leader immediately if headaches/nausea worsen. Weather can change fast (wind, cold nights, sudden rain/snow at passes). Your team carries a robust safety plan and uses local networks for communications and evacuation routing if needed.
MONEY ON TOUR: SPENDING & GRATUITIES: Carry cash for small purchases (tea stops, snacks, monastery donations, simple shops) as ATMs can be limited/empty in Spiti/Lahaul. Card payments are sporadic outside bigger towns. Typical extras: lunches/dinners not included, hot drinks, souvenirs, and optional café stops in Manali. Tipping is discretionary but appreciated; plan to tip the Tour Leader/guide(s) and driver(s) at trip end, and local guides where used.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS & PRACTICALITIES: Permits: Indian citizens typically travel with a valid photo ID. Foreign nationals may require permits for protected/border areas in Himachal; the district administration notes protected areas and permit controls for parts of Lahaul & Spiti and Kinnaur provides ILP guidance . We’ll advise the correct process based on passport/route.
Baggage: Soft luggage is best (easier in vehicles); keep layers, a warm hat/gloves, sun protection and a daypack handy.
Climate: Warm days in lower valleys; cold nights and strong sun at altitude—pack proper layers.
Insurance: Must cover high-altitude travel and remote-road evacuation contingencies.
