ACCLIMATISATION & SUNSET AT SHANTI STUPA: We take an early morning flight to Leh, soaring over the majestic Himalayas. If conditions are clear, you may glimpse Everest, K2, and Nanga Parbat. Upon landing at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (3500m), our team transfers you to the Grand Dragon Hotel for breakfast and rest. As Leh sits at high altitude, we take the day slowly to allow proper acclimatisation. In the afternoon, we regroup for an expedition briefing, discussing Snow Leopard behaviour, tracking strategies, and the terrain of Hemis National Park. Later, we visit Shanti Stupa, a serene Buddhist monument offering panoramic sunset views over the Indus Valley.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
THIKSEY MONASTERY & SHEY PALACE: Our day begins with an early visit to Thiksey Monastery, one of Ladakh’s most striking Buddhist sites. Perched in the Indus Valley, this monastery resembles Tibet’s Potala Palace and offers breathtaking mountain views. We attend the morning prayer ceremony, where monks chant ancient Buddhist mantras, creating a spiritually uplifting experience. Next, we visit Shey Palace, the former royal residence of Ladakh, known for its golden Buddha statues and exquisite murals. The afternoon is free for leisurely exploration and further acclimatisation, allowing you to fully adjust before heading into Snow Leopard territory.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
ENTERING SNOW LEOPARD TERRITORY: After breakfast, we depart Leh and travel to Rumbak, a remote village in Hemis National Park, renowned for Snow Leopard sightings. The drive through the Indus Valley offers the chance to spot blue sheep, golden eagles, and Himalayan ibex against a dramatic snowy backdrop. Upon arrival, we settle into traditional Ladakhi homestays, where guests enjoy private, carpeted rooms with thick blankets and wood-burning heaters. After lunch, we meet our expert Snow Leopard trackers, who introduce us to tracking techniques and local wildlife behaviour. An acclimatisation walk follows, scanning the rugged mountains for the first signs of the elusive big cat.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
FIRST FULL DAY OF SNOW LEOPARD TOUR: We begin our first full day of Snow Leopard tracking at dawn. After a warm breakfast, we join expert wildlife spotters, who use high-powered scopes to scan the ridges for fresh Snow Leopard signs. We hike to key vantage points, searching for paw prints, territorial markings, and observing predator-prey interactions. Alongside the Snow Leopard, we may encounter Tibetan wolves, red foxes, and herds of blue sheep, the Snow Leopard’s primary prey. After a packed lunch in the field, we continue tracking before returning to our homestay for warm tea and traditional Ladakhi cuisine.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
SNOW LEOPARD TRACKING: On our second full day of tracking, we set out early on new routes based on fresh Snow Leopard sightings reported by local spotters and trackers. The terrain is rugged, but patience is key—each vantage point offers a chance to witness this elusive predator in action. In the afternoon, we return to Rumbak village for a cultural experience, engaging with local Ladakhi families. We learn about their resilient way of life, hear their stories, and experience their warm hospitality. We also take part in a traditional cooking session, preparing Mokthuk (dumpling soup) before enjoying a communal Ladakhi dinner.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
REST & LOCAL EXPLORATION: After breakfast, we depart Rumbak and return to Leh, keeping an eye out for any early-morning Snow Leopard activity before departure. The scenic drive offers spectacular views of Ladakh’s rugged mountains and frozen landscapes. Upon arrival, the afternoon is free for rest or local exploration. You may visit Leh’s vibrant markets, where handwoven pashmina shawls, Tibetan artefacts, and Ladakhi handicrafts make for unique souvenirs. In the evening, we gather for a debriefing session, reflecting on wildlife sightings and tracking experiences from Hemis National Park.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
STOK GURU TSECHU FESTIVAL: Today, we experience the Stok Guru Tsechu Festival, one of Ladakh’s most sacred and vibrant celebrations. Held in Stok village, home to the Stok Palace, this festival blends masked dances, Buddhist rituals, and oracle predictions. In the morning, we enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes access, witnessing monks rehearsing sacred dances, preparing elaborate costumes and masks, and setting up ceremonial instruments. This rare opportunity allows for unhurried photography and personal interactions with festival participants. After immersing ourselves in the preparations, we return to Leh for a relaxed evening, reflecting on the spiritual significance of this unique tradition.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
STOK GURU TSECHU FESTIVAL: We return to Stok village early to witness the main events of the Stok Guru Tsechu Festival. The atmosphere is electric, with Ladakhis arriving in traditional attire to partake in this deeply spiritual gathering. The highlight is the oracle ceremony, where laymen—trained by Buddhist monks—enter deep trances and deliver divine prophecies for the coming year. The day also features mesmerising Cham dances, performed by yellow-hat lamas, accompanied by Tibetan drums and long horns. This visually striking festival offers an extraordinary cultural experience and exceptional photography opportunities. By evening, we return to Leh, carrying unforgettable memories of this mystical event.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
SECOND SNOW LEOPARD EXPEDITION: After breakfast, we set out for Uley, another prime location for Snow Leopard sightings. The scenic drive through the Trans-Himalayan landscape offers stops for wildlife observation, including Tibetan wolves, golden eagles, and Himalayan ibex. Upon arrival at Shan Lodge, a family-run wildlife lodge, we are warmly welcomed by our hosts, who are dedicated to Snow Leopard conservation. After a home-cooked meal, we head out for our first tracking session, scanning rugged cliffs and deep ravines for signs of Snow Leopard movement. In the evening, we unwind at the lodge, enjoying traditional Ladakhi cuisine and discussing tracking strategies for the following days.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
FULL DAY OF SNOW LEOPARD TRACKING: We begin pre-dawn Snow Leopard tracking, heading to strategic vantage points with our expert spotters. Using high-powered scopes, we scan the snow-covered ridges and valleys, hoping to witness the majestic predator in action. Uley is home to diverse Himalayan wildlife, including Tibetan wolves, red foxes, golden eagles, lammergeiers, and herds of blue sheep (bharal)—the Snow Leopard’s primary prey. Our expert guides interpret animal tracks, territorial markings, and prey movements to increase the chances of a sighting. After a traditional Ladakhi lunch at the lodge, we head out again for an evening tracking session. As night falls, we gather for a wildlife conservation talk, learning about ongoing efforts to protect the Snow Leopard in Ladakh.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
SNOW LEOPARD TRACKING: On our final full day in Uley, we continue tracking the Snow Leopard, following the latest reported sightings from local spotters. If confirmed activity is detected, we may spend the entire day observing and photographing this rare predator in its natural habitat. Uley’s high-altitude landscapes also offer superb winter photography opportunities, capturing frozen valleys, dramatic cliffs, and golden sunlight reflecting off the Himalayan snowfields. In the afternoon, we return to Shan Lodge for a farewell gathering, reflecting on the expedition’s highlights and celebrating the success of our Snow Leopard Expedition Ladakh.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
FINAL EVENING IN LADAKH: After breakfast, we bid farewell to Shan Lodge and make our way back to Leh, stopping en route at Basgo Fort—a 15th-century fortress featuring exquisite murals and stunning panoramic views of the Indus Valley. At the Asian Geographical, our commitment to preserving wildlife, culture, and nature across Asia has shaped our vision for transformative travel experiences. The Snow Leopard Tour in Ladakh was born from our dedication to Snow Leopard conservation and our desire to offer travellers a rare chance to encounter this elusive predator in its natural habitat.
During our early explorations of Ladakh, we were captivated by Hemis National Park’s breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity. By integrating expert-guided wildlife tracking, cultural immersion, and ethical tourism, we ensure that the Snow Leopard Expedition fosters a deeper understanding of Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem, keeping conservation at its core.
