Gobi Desert, Karakorum, Hustai and Nomadic Culture

Ulaanbaatar To Ulaanbaatar – 14 Days

Expedition Overview

This 14-day Classic Mongolia Expedition is a rounded first encounter with the country’s essential landscapes, history and nomadic culture. Begin in Ulaanbaatar with Buddhist monasteries, imperial residences and city viewpoints before travelling to Hustai National Park, where conservation efforts have helped return the takhi, or Przewalski’s horse, to the wild. Continue to Kharkhorin, ancient Karakorum, and Erdene Zuu Monastery, then pause at Tsenkher Hot Springs before entering the Orkhon Valley.

The route then turns south towards the Gobi, passing Ongiin Khiid’s atmospheric monastery ruins and the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag before reaching the great dunes of Khongoryn Els. Explore Yolyn Am’s cool canyon, walk among the granite formations of Baga Gazriin Chuluu, and return to Ulaanbaatar for a cultural performance and farewell dinner — a complete Mongolia journey in one carefully paced small-group expedition.

Highlights

HUSTAI NATIONAL PARK & WILD HORSES: Visit Hustai National Park, one of Mongolia’s most important conservation areas and home to the takhi, or Przewalski’s horse. Once extinct in the wild, these remarkable horses have been successfully reintroduced to the steppe, where they now graze freely across protected grasslands. With your guide, learn about the conservation story behind their return and search for takhi in their natural habitat, alongside possible sightings of marmots, red deer, raptors and steppe birds.

KARAKORUM, ERDENE ZUU & ORKHON VALLEY: Explore Mongolia’s historical heart, from Kharkhorin, near ancient Karakorum, to Erdene Zuu Monastery, the country’s first major Buddhist monastery. Continue into the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape shaped by nomadic cultures, river systems, archaeology and spiritual heritage. Visit Tuvkhun Monastery, set among forested hills and rock formations, and spend time with a local family to understand herding life, dairy traditions and the seasonal rhythms that continue to define rural Mongolia.

GOBI DESERT, FLAMING CLIFFS & KHONGORYN ELS: Travel south into the Gobi, where open steppe gives way to desert cliffs, fossil country and immense sand dunes. Walk among the rust-red formations of Bayanzag, better known as the Flaming Cliffs, where early palaeontological expeditions uncovered dinosaur fossils and eggs. Continue to Khongoryn Els, Mongolia’s great “Singing Sands”, to meet camel-herding families, learn about desert nomadic life and explore the dunes on foot, with sweeping views across the golden landscape.

YOLYN AM & BAGA GAZRIIN CHULUU: Discover two of Mongolia’s most striking natural landscapes as the expedition turns north from the Gobi. Walk through Yolyn Am, the “Valley of the Eagles”, a cool canyon in Gurvan Saikhan National Park known for rock walls, birdlife and seasonal ice. Continue to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, where granite formations rise from the steppe in a maze of rocky corridors, hidden corners and temple ruins. These quieter locations add geological variety, photography opportunities and a strong final wilderness note.

Why Asian Geographical?

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Ulaanbaatar

Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, where your local team will meet you for the transfer into Ulaanbaatar. After check-in, the rest of the day is free to rest after your flight and adjust to Mongolia’s pace. Depending on arrival time, you may wish to take a gentle walk near Sukhbaatar Square, enjoy a quiet café stop, or simply relax at the hotel. This first evening is intentionally unhurried, giving you time to prepare for the journey ahead through steppe, monasteries, wild horse country, hot springs, desert cliffs and the great landscapes of the Gobi.

DAY 2

Ulaanbaatar

Begin with a guided introduction to Mongolia’s capital, where Buddhist tradition, Soviet-era planning and modern city life meet. Visit Gandan Monastery, still an active centre of worship, before continuing to Sukhbaatar Square, the civic heart of Ulaanbaatar. Explore Bogd Khan’s Winter Palace, former residence of Mongolia’s last spiritual and political ruler, then drive to the Zaisan Memorial for panoramic views across the city. If time allows, visit the Chinggis Khaan Museum or the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs, giving useful historical and palaeontological context before travelling into the countryside.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 3

Hustai National Park

Leave Ulaanbaatar and drive to Hustai National Park, a protected steppe landscape best known for the takhi, or Przewalski’s horse. Once extinct in the wild, these remarkable horses have been successfully reintroduced, making Hustai one of Mongolia’s strongest conservation stories. Visit the park information centre to understand the reintroduction programme, then continue into the reserve to look for takhi grazing on the hillsides and open grasslands. Other wildlife may include marmots, red deer, raptors and steppe birds. Overnight in a ger camp, your first countryside stay beneath Mongolia’s wide skies.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger Camp Hustai (or similar)

DAY 4

KHARKHORIN

Travel west across open country to Kharkhorin, near the site of ancient Karakorum, the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first major Buddhist monastery, built partly from stones of the former imperial city and enclosed by its white stupa walls. Your guide explains the rise of Karakorum, the spread of Buddhism and the damage caused during the communist purges. Continue to the Karakorum Museum, where artefacts, maps and models help bring the former capital to life. Overnight in a ger camp in the Orkhon region.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger Camp Munkhtenger (or similar)

DAY 5

TSENKHER HOT SPRINGS

Continue through central Mongolia towards Tsenkher Hot Springs, set among forested hills and open pastureland. After several days of travel, this is a welcome change of pace and an important comfort stop before the route continues deeper into the Orkhon Valley and towards the Gobi. On arrival, check into your ger camp and enjoy time to relax in the thermal waters, valued locally for their mineral qualities. The afternoon is kept deliberately easy, allowing you to recover from the road, enjoy the rural setting and settle into the slower rhythm of Mongolia’s interior.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Duut Mankhan Ger Camp (or similar)

DAY 6

ORKHON VALLEY

Travel into the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape shaped by nomadic cultures, river valleys, archaeology and Buddhist heritage. Visit Tuvkhun Monastery, founded by Zanabazar, one of Mongolia’s most important religious and artistic figures. The monastery is reached by a scenic walk through forested slopes and sits among rocks and caves, with views across the surrounding hills. The day combines gentle activity, spiritual history and fine landscapes, offering a strong contrast to the open steppe and the capital. Continue to your ger camp in the Orkhon Valley for dinner and overnight.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

UlaanTsutgalan Ger Camp (or similar)

DAY 7

ORKHON VALLEY

Spend a second day in the Orkhon Valley, focusing on rural life and the landscapes that sustain it. Visit a local family to learn about herding routines, seasonal movement, traditional cooking and dairy preparation. Depending on local arrangements, you may taste fresh curd, yoghurt or other staples of Mongolian family life. Later, take a walk to the Orkhon waterfall, one of the valley’s most attractive natural features, with time for photography and quiet exploration. Return to camp for dinner, with the possibility of a traditional Mongolian barbecue prepared with hot stones, depending on local arrangements.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

UlaanTsutgalan Ger Camp (or similar)

DAY 8

ONGIIN KHIID

Leave the greener Orkhon landscapes and travel south towards the Gobi. The scenery becomes drier and more open as you approach Ongiin Khiid, the atmospheric ruins of a once-important monastic complex near the Ongi River. Destroyed during the communist purges, the site remains deeply evocative, with scattered foundations, restored elements and a powerful sense of loss and renewal. Walk through the ruins with your guide and learn how monks have gradually returned to revive religious life in the area. Overnight near the river, where desert silence and broad skies mark the transition into southern Mongolia.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger Camp Secret of Ongi (or similar)

DAY 9

BAYANZAG

Continue into the Gobi to Bayanzag, better known as the Flaming Cliffs. This red sandstone landscape became world-famous through early palaeontological expeditions that uncovered dinosaur fossils and eggs in the surrounding desert. Walk among the rust-coloured cliffs, gullies and eroded formations, taking time to appreciate both the geological drama and the sense of deep time beneath your feet. Late afternoon light can be especially striking, when the cliffs glow red and orange against the open desert. Overnight in a nearby ger camp, with dinner beneath the vast Gobi sky.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger Camp Bayan Zag (or similar)

DAY 10

KHONGORYN ELS

Travel across the western Gobi towards Khongoryn Els, Mongolia’s great “Singing Sands”. These immense dunes rise dramatically from the desert floor, backed by distant mountains and open steppe. Visit a camel-herding family to learn how Bactrian camels are raised in this harsh environment, and gain insight into desert nomadic life. Later, explore the dunes on foot, with the option to climb part of the ridge for sweeping views across the golden landscape. A short camel ride may be included where conditions and local arrangements allow. Overnight in a ger camp near the dunes.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger Camp Gobi Anar (or similar)

DAY 11

YOLYN AM

Drive through the Gobi’s mountain scenery to Gurvan Saikhan National Park, a diverse protected area of canyons, rocky slopes, desert steppe and wildlife habitat. Visit Yolyn Am, the “Valley of the Eagles”, a narrow gorge known for its cool microclimate and dramatic rock walls. Take a walk through the valley, watching for birds of prey and, with luck, wildlife such as ibex or argali on the slopes. In some seasons, ice may linger in the shaded gorge. A small local museum adds context on the region’s wildlife, geology and dinosaur discoveries.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger Camp Gobi Anar (or similar)

DAY 12

BAGA GADZRÏN CHULUU

Continue north into Middle Gobi, known as Dundgobi, to explore Baga Gazriin Chuluu. Rising from the open steppe, these granite formations create a striking landscape of rocky corridors, hidden corners, wind-shaped outcrops and wide views. Spend time walking among the formations and visiting the ruins of an old temple, which add a cultural layer to the natural setting. This is one of the journey’s quieter and more photogenic stops, offering a final sense of Mongolia’s geological variety before returning to the capital. Overnight in a nearby ger camp.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger Camp Khan Bogd (or similar)

DAY 13

Ulaanbaatar

Return to Ulaanbaatar, driving across broad grasslands and changing rural scenery. The journey gives a final chance to reflect on the landscapes travelled: steppe, valleys, monasteries, hot springs, desert cliffs, dunes, gorges and granite outcrops. Arrive in the capital by late afternoon or early evening and check into your hotel. There may be time for last-minute shopping, a short walk or a rest before the farewell evening. Tonight, enjoy a traditional cultural performance featuring Mongolian music, dance and throat singing, followed by a farewell dinner with your guide and fellow travellers.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 14

Depart Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your onward flight. Depart Mongolia with memories of a journey that has linked the country’s essential landscapes and cultures: Buddhist monasteries, wild horse conservation, thermal springs, the Orkhon Valley, Gobi fossil country, camel-herding families, sand dunes, mountain gorges and remote ger camps. This classic expedition is designed as a rounded first encounter with Mongolia, combining history, wildlife, nomadic life and desert adventure while keeping the route varied, accessible and engaging for small-group travellers.

Meals Included: Breakfast

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, GUIDE SUPPORT & TRIP STYLE: This is a 14-day small-group Mongolia expedition designed as a rounded first encounter with the country’s landscapes, history and nomadic culture. Travel is by private vehicle with an experienced English-speaking local guide and professional drivers. The journey includes Ulaanbaatar, Hustai National Park, Kharkhorin, Tsenkher Hot Springs, Orkhon Valley and the Gobi Desert, with several long road days and some off-road sections. Flexibility is important, as weather, road conditions and rural logistics can affect timings.

ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation combines a comfortable hotel in Ulaanbaatar with carefully selected ger camps in the countryside. Ger camps are atmospheric and comfortable by local standards, usually with proper beds, stove heating where required, and shared bathroom facilities in many locations. Power, hot water and Wi-Fi can be limited or generator-based outside the capital. Single rooms are available with a supplement where possible, but rural ger camps may have limited single occupancy.

MEALS, FOOD & WATER: Meals are included as specified in the itinerary, with most countryside days operating on a full-board basis. Mongolian food is traditionally meat- and dairy-led, though ger camps usually provide more international-style meals such as soups, salads, rice, pasta, vegetables and simple desserts. Vegetarian meals can usually be arranged with advance notice. Drink bottled or purified water arranged by the team, and keep personal snacks handy for longer drives.

WEATHER, SEASONS & WHAT TO PACK: This tour is best suited to the warmer travel season, generally from May to September, when the Gobi, Orkhon Valley and central Mongolia are most accessible. Days can be warm and sunny, while evenings in the steppe and desert may be cool. Pack layered clothing, a light waterproof, sun hat, sunglasses, SPF, comfortable walking shoes, a warm evening layer and a small daypack. Dust is common on Gobi roads, so a scarf or buff is useful.

WALKING, RIDING & ACTIVITY LEVEL: The activity level is moderate. The itinerary includes short hikes, monastery visits, desert walks, dunes, canyon trails, waterfall walks and time on uneven ground. There is no technical trekking, but clients should be comfortable with long drives, bumpy roads and basic rural facilities. Camel riding and other local activities are gentle and guided, with participation usually adjustable according to comfort level.

NOMADIC CULTURE & LOCAL ENCOUNTERS: The journey includes opportunities to meet local families and learn about herding life, seasonal movement, dairy traditions, camel culture and rural hospitality. These encounters are informal and respectful, supported by your guide, and may vary depending on family availability, weather and local conditions. The aim is to offer genuine insight into Mongolian life without turning local culture into a staged performance.

GOBI DESERT & REMOTE LANDSCAPES: The Gobi section includes Ongiin Khiid, Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs, Khongoryn Els, Yolyn Am and Baga Gazriin Chuluu. These areas involve long distances, desert tracks, strong sun, wind and variable facilities, but they provide some of Mongolia’s most memorable landscapes. Your guide and drivers manage comfort stops, daily pacing and local arrangements, but patience is important in remote regions.

MONGOLIAN VISA & ENTRY: Many UK, EU, USA and Canadian passport holders do not usually require a visa for short tourist visits to Mongolia, but rules can change. Travellers should ensure their passport meets current validity requirements and confirm entry rules for Mongolia and any transit countries before travel. We will advise on current requirements at the time of booking.
