Mongolia Naadam Altai Adventure

Ulaanbaatar to Ulaanbaatar – 13 Days

Expedition Overview

This immersive journey across western Mongolia offers a rare opportunity to experience the country’s most vibrant traditions and landscapes through authentic cultural experiences. Timed around the summer Naadam Festival, you’ll witness rural celebrations filled with wrestling, horse racing, and archery—centuries-old “manly games” that unite nomadic communities each year. Begin in Ulaanbaatar before flying west to Khovd, where ethnic Mongols and Kazakhs gather for local festivities. Then journey through the dramatic Altai Mountains, meet eagle hunters in Deluun, and explore the high summer pastures of Kazakh nomads near the Chinese border.

Alongside rich cultural experiences, this adventure also reveals Mongolia’s natural beauty and biodiversity. This personalized Mongolian adventure includes hiking in Khar Us Nuur National Park, spotting rare wildlife like saiga antelope and ibex, and observing conservation efforts in Hustai National Park, home to reintroduced wild Przewalski’s horses. With private guides and comfortable stays in traditional gers, this tour offers authentic encounters with Mongolia’s living heritage in one of Asia’s last great wildernesses. The tour is designed for small group travel, ensuring a more intimate and personalized experience.

DAY 2

Ulaanbaatar

Start the day with a visit to Gandan Lamasery, Mongolia’s only active monastery. You'll see monks in red robes and Tibetan-Chinese-style architecture. Continue to the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs, which displays fossils once taken overseas and now returned. After lunch, explore the Bogd Khan Winter Palace, once the home of Mongolia’s spiritual leader until 1924. When he died, Mongolia’s new Bolshevik government ended the tradition of reincarnated rulers, marking a major shift in the country's political and religious history.

DAY 3

Khovd

Fly west to Khovd, a city known for its natural beauty and diverse cultures. After checking in, enjoy free time to explore. Khovd is rich in history and makes a perfect base to experience the surrounding region and its Naadam celebrations. Whether strolling through the streets or relaxing at your hotel, take this day to adjust to the slower pace and get ready for the rural festivals ahead.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Hotel Options:

Steppe Hotel

DAY 4

Khovd

Head out of Khovd to nearby villages like Buyant or Chandman to witness traditional Naadam Games. Locals gather in colourful dress for this summer celebration. You’ll see wrestling, horse racing, and archery—skills passed down for generations. Local nomads actively participate in the festivities, highlighting their deep-rooted cultural connection to the Naadam festival. Children under 12 race horses trained by their elders. Pride and prestige are at stake in these lively events. The festive atmosphere reflects the close-knit nature of these rural communities and their strong connection to tradition.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 5

Khovd

Spend the day in Khovd city, where people of different ethnic backgrounds live together, including Halkh Mongols, Myangads, and Kazakhs. You’ll notice the cultural mix, with mosques standing beside Buddhist temples. Today’s Naadam events in the city centre bring more skilled athletes and entertainers, such as throat singers and musicians playing the morin khuur, or horsehead fiddle. The celebrations link modern Mongolia with its medieval past and nomadic legacy.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 6

Khovd

Take a full-day excursion to West Gobi and Khar Us Nuur National Park. Visit the Jargalant Khairkhan Mountain area, perfect for scenic hikes. Look out for rare wildlife like bearded vultures, gazelles, and the endangered saiga antelope. The contrast between desert and lake creates a unique habitat, attracting migratory birds from across Eurasia. The lakes, fed by Altai glacial meltwater, form rich reed beds and marshes in the middle of the arid steppe. Return to Khovd for the night.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 7

Deluun

Travel from Khovd to Deluun, a small Kazakh village in the Bayan-Ölgii province. The four-hour drive offers scenic views, especially of Dööröö Lake with Sair Mountain in the distance. Arrive in Deluun, near Hökh Serkhiin Nuruu National Park, where you’ll stay in a private ger camp. Your accommodation may be along the peaceful Buyant River or by the shore of Chigertei Lake, offering a quiet base for exploring Kazakh culture and wildlife.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Hotel Options:

DAY 8

Deluun

This morning, hike into the Ikh Yamaat Valley, home to wildlife like the Siberian ibex and, if you're lucky, argali sheep. In July, these plains are filled with ewes and lambs. Snow leopards are rarely seen but roam these mountains. Visit the Altai Research Institute to learn about ongoing conservation work. In the afternoon, there’s a chance to meet eagle hunters, a proud tradition among local Kazakhs who raise golden eagles for hunting in the harsh winters.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 9

Deluun

Travel further along the Buyant and Chigertei Rivers to the high pastures of the Kazakh nomads. This remote area sits near the Chinese border and remains steeped in traditional ways. Here, families herd livestock and continue the ancient practice of eagle hunting. The land is also rich in biodiversity, monitored with camera traps capturing images of wolverines, wolves, and rare cats. Nearby are archaeological sites left by the Scythians, ancient warriors who once roamed Central Asia. Among these sites are ancient deer stones, which are significant monuments reflecting the cultural heritage of the region and its nomadic peoples.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 10

Bayan Olgii

Drive northwest for four hours to reach Ölgii, the capital of Bayan-Ölgii province. After settling in, enjoy a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant. Spend the afternoon exploring the small town’s highlights, including its lively bazaar, mosque, museum, and shops selling traditional Kazakh crafts. The town’s residents are mostly ethnic Kazakhs, giving it a distinct cultural feel within Mongolia.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 11

Fly from Ölgii back to Ulaanbaatar, then drive one hour west to Hui Doloon Hudag Plains. These grasslands are known for their horse racing each July. Check into your modernised ger camp and take time to unwind. If you prefer, go for a short guided walk through the surrounding countryside. The peaceful steppe landscape offers a great contrast to the festival crowds of previous days.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

YOUR TRIP DESIGN, PACE & FLEXIBILITY: This itinerary is privately operated and shaped around your preferred dates, pace and comfort level, with one immovable anchor: the Naadam festival timing in western Mongolia. Everything else can be refined around your priorities—more time in the Altai Mountains, deeper cultural access with Kazakh communities near Khovd and Deluun, or a stronger nature-and-wildlife emphasis around Khar Us Nuur. Because this is a remote, frontier-style region, we design with intelligent buffers and alternative routing so the experience stays elegant even when weather, road conditions, or local festival schedules evolve on the ground.

ROUTING OPTIONS WORTH CONSIDERING: Before we lock the design, there are several high-impact choices to consider. Many clients prefer a rural Naadam focus (more intimate, less “stadium-like”) rather than a capital-city festival, and we can calibrate your festival days accordingly. The Altai section can be structured as (a) a scenic overland traverse with shorter driving days and more stops, or (b) a tighter routing that prioritises comfort and reduces time in transit. If you enjoy photography, we can shape the sequence around the best light in the high pastures and river valleys; if you value wildlife, we can reweight time towards habitats where saiga antelope, ibex and birdlife are most likely.

LOCAL EXPERTISE, VIP SERVICE & ON-THE-GROUND SUPPORT: This is a specialist region where local judgement is the difference between a good trip and an exceptional one. You travel with a dedicated driver and private vehicle specified for the terrain, supported by local experts who understand the Altai, Kazakh customs, and the practicalities of remote Mongolia. Eagle hunter encounters in Deluun and nomadic visits are handled with sensitivity and genuine access—not staged “photo stops”. The service style is proactive: camp logistics, timings, permits where applicable, and on-the-day refinements are handled quietly, with a clear point of contact throughout.

LUXURY-STYLE CAMPS & COMFORT IN REMOTE MONGOLIA: Accommodation is curated to a premium brief, using the best-available hotels in Ulaanbaatar and high-quality ger camps and luxury-style camps in the west. In the Altai and around Khar Us Nuur, comfort is delivered through thoughtful camp selection, strong private facilities where possible, excellent bedding and heat management, and a well-run dining set-up. If you would like an even higher comfort specification—larger gers, enhanced privacy, or a more exclusive camp footprint—we can build this into the design from the outset, subject to what is feasible in each location.

INTERNAL FLIGHTS, ROAD REALITIES & ACTIVITY LEVEL: This journey typically combines internal flights (for example, to/from Khovd) with overland 4x4 touring in the west. Driving days can be longer than distances suggest; we manage this with well-judged pacing, comfort stops, and the right overnight positioning. The activity level is moderate: gentle hikes in national-park landscapes, steppe and lakeside walks, and optional riding or longer walks if you want more movement. If you prefer a lighter physical load, we can keep activity optional and design the trip to feel indulgent rather than demanding.

COSTING, PAYMENTS, UPGRADES & TERMS: Pricing is built from live availability—festival-period logistics, internal flights, premium ger inventory, private vehicles, and specialist guiding—so costs can move until key components are secured. Your proposal will set out inclusions and assumptions clearly, with upgrades presented as options (camp specification, additional nights, private cultural access, enhanced vehicle comfort, or added buffer days). Deposits secure the most constrained elements around Naadam, with balance dates aligned to supplier deadlines. If you wish to refine the programme after confirmation, we will explain any practical and commercial implications in advance before actioning changes.
