Dog Sledding, Lake Khuvsgul and the Reindeer Festival

Ulaanbaatar to Ulaanbaatar – 13 Days

Expedition Overview

This 13-day small-group winter journey combines Mongolia’s most atmospheric cold-season experiences with genuine taiga culture. Begin in Ulaanbaatar with the Chinggis Khaan Museum, Sukhbaatar Square and a behind-the-scenes cashmere factory visit, before escaping into the granite valleys of Gorkhi–Terelj National Park. Here, hike to Aryapala Meditation Temple, try traditional archery, meet nomadic families and enjoy a signature dog sledding experience across snowy winter landscapes.

Fly north to Murun and continue to Lake Khuvsgul, Mongolia’s “Blue Pearl”, for shoreline walks, horseback trails and crisp taiga air. The journey culminates at the Khuvsgul Reindeer Festival, with time among Tsaatan reindeer herders to understand a way of life shaped by forest, season and survival. Return via ancient deer stones, then finish in the capital with the Chinggis Khaan Statue, a hosted Kazakh family lunch, folk concert and farewell dinner.

Highlights

ULAANBAATAR CITY TOUR: Begin in Mongolia’s capital with a compact, high-impact introduction. Visit the Chinggis Khaan Museum to understand the rise of the Mongol Empire through artefacts and well-curated storytelling, then step into the civic heart of the city at Sukhbaatar Square, framed by the Government Palace and key cultural buildings. The day finishes with a behind-the-scenes visit to a leading Mongolian cashmere factory, where you see how raw fibre becomes finished knitwear — one of the country’s signature exports. It’s a smart first-day blend of history, modern identity and industry.

TERELJ NATIONAL PARK: Escape the city quickly into the granite scenery of Gorkhi–Terelj National Park — pine forests, rock outcrops and wide valleys. Stop at Turtle Rock for classic Terelj landscapes, then hike to Aryapala Meditation Temple, a peaceful hillside complex with open views and a reflective atmosphere. Back at camp, try traditional Mongolian archery and dress in traditional costumes for photographs. This gives the day a strong balance of winter scenery, light activity and hands-on Mongolian culture.

MONGOLIA DOG SLEDDING EXPERIENCE: This is the expedition’s signature winter adventure. Head into snowy terrain near the Tuul River for a dog sledding experience, learning how the dogs are harnessed, guided and cared for before gliding across quiet white landscapes behind an energetic team. It is exhilarating but accessible, with pauses for photographs and warming breaks. Return to camp for hot food and a cosy evening — exactly the kind of cold-season experience travellers imagine when they picture Mongolia in winter.

LAKE KHOVSGOL REINDEER FESTIVAL: Fly north to the taiga region for the pristine shores of Lake Khovsgol, then immerse yourself in the MAANAR Reindeer Festival — a rare chance to meet Tsaatan reindeer herders and learn how reindeer shape transport, food, craft and daily survival in the forested north. Time is spent respectfully: watching festivities, sharing conversation and understanding how community-led tourism supports cultural preservation. The return journey adds deep-time perspective with Mongolia’s deer stones, ancient carved monuments linking living traditions to older steppe heritage.

DAY 1

Ulaanbaatar

Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and meet the Juulchin team for a warm welcome and transfer to your hotel. After settling in, gather for lunch at Modern Nomads, a favourite for contemporary Mongolian cuisine. This afternoon is a superb introduction to the capital: visit the Chinggis Khaan Museum for a clear, story-led overview of the Great Khan and the Mongol Empire, then walk across Sukhbaatar Square, framed by the Government Palace, Opera & Ballet Theatre and key civic buildings. Finish with a visit to a leading cashmere factory to see how Mongolia’s famous fibres are processed from raw wool to finished quality—an insight into the country’s signature industry.

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2

Terelj National Park

Travel to Gorkhi–Terelj National Park, where granite formations, forested slopes and open valleys create a classic Mongolian landscape. Pause for photographs at Turtle Rock, then set out on a scenic hike to Aryapala Meditation Temple, a peaceful hillside site with wide views across the valley. The walk is active but unhurried, with time to enjoy the fresh winter air and quiet surroundings. Back at camp, try traditional Mongolian archery and dress in classic costumes for memorable photographs. Settle into your eco complex for a relaxed evening and dinner under clear winter skies.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3

Terelj National Park

Today brings a cold-season adventure in Terelj’s snowy landscapes. Travel to the Tuul River area for a dog sledding experience, learning how the dogs are harnessed, guided and cared for before gliding across quiet winter terrain behind an energetic team. The activity is exhilarating but accessible, with time for photographs and warming pauses along the route. A short seasonal reindeer encounter may also be included, subject to local arrangements. Later, return to camp for a relaxed evening meal and time by the stove, sharing stories from a memorable day in Mongolia’s winter wilderness. Distance: 42 km road + 12 km off-road.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4

Terelj National Park

Spend a final, unhurried day in Gorkhi–Terelj, focusing on nomadic life, gentle activity and winter culture. Visit a local nomadic family to understand ger life, herding rhythms and cold-season survival, often with the chance to taste traditional dairy products and hear how families move with the seasons. Then saddle up for a gentle horse ride across the valley, with wide-steppe views framed by granite outcrops and forested slopes. Back at camp, enjoy time for archery practice, photographs in traditional costume and a warming dinner before tomorrow’s return to the capital.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Ulaanbaatar

Return to Ulaanbaatar: Paleontological Museum. After breakfast, depart Terelj and drive back to Ulaanbaatar. As you re-enter the city, visit the Paleontological Museum, a highlight for anyone fascinated by Mongolia’s prehistoric past. Exhibits showcase fossils from the Gobi—dinosaur skeletons, eggs and ancient remains—telling the story of why Mongolia is one of the world’s most important dinosaur landscapes. Your guide adds context on the discoveries, the environments that preserved them, and how field expeditions work today. The afternoon allows time to relax at the hotel, refresh, or take a short walk nearby before dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6

Lake Khovsgol

Fly to Murun, on to Lake Khovsgol (taiga region). Fly north to Murun, gateway to Mongolia’s taiga. After landing, continue by road towards Lake Khovsgol, one of Asia’s great freshwater lakes, where pine forest and mountain air replace the steppe. Stop in Murun for lunch and a visit to the provincial museum, offering local history and cultural context before you head deeper into the countryside. Arrive at the lake and check in to your ger camp at Toilogt, then enjoy a relaxed afternoon to settle into the lakeside atmosphere—gentle walks, shoreline views and the crisp calm of the north. Dinner is served at camp.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7

Lake Khovsgol

Lake Khovsgol: shoreline walks, horse riding & “Wishing Island” boat trip. Wake to crisp taiga air at Lake Khovsgol and spend the day exploring the “Blue Pearl” at an easy pace. After breakfast, take a relaxed shoreline walk through larch forest to wide viewpoints over the lake’s crystal water and surrounding mountains. Later, enjoy horse riding along the lakeside trails—one of the classic ways to experience Khovsgol’s scenery. Weather and ice conditions permitting, add a local excursion towards Wishing Island or another lakeside viewpoint, with time for photographs and quiet moments in the landscape. Return to camp for lunch, then keep the afternoon flexible—more walking or simply settling in ahead of the Reindeer Festival days.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8

Khovsgol

Reindeer Festival at Khovsgol: MAANAR celebrations & nomad encounters. Travel into the Khovsgol taiga for the MAANAR Reindeer Festival, where the focus is cultural exchange rather than spectatorship. Settle into a ger/house camp and meet Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders, one of the world’s few remaining reindeer-herding communities, based in northern Khovsgol around Tsagaan Nuur. Festival activities typically include reindeer parades and races, traditional dress, music and community performances, alongside chances to learn how reindeer are cared for and used for transport in the taiga. Expect a respectful, immersive day: conversations, photos by permission, and time in the landscape that sustains this way of life.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9

Khovsgol

Khovsgol taiga: time with Tsaatan families & sustainable rural life. Today deepens the experience beyond the festival events. Spend time with Tsaatan families in their taiga environment—learning about seasonal movements, milking, handmade crafts and the practical realities of living with reindeer in a remote region. The emphasis is low-impact and community-led: listening, sharing meals, and understanding how tourism can support cultural preservation when done thoughtfully. Depending on conditions, you may add gentle walking or horseback time through forest trails and open clearings, with plenty of pauses for photographs and quiet observation. Return to camp for a warm dinner and a calm evening under clear northern skies.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10

Murun

Return to Murun via the Uushgiin Uvur Deer Stones. Leave early by vehicle and drive back towards Murun, breaking the journey with a visit to the Uushgiin Uvur Deer Stones—a remarkable Bronze Age ceremonial complex located around 18 km west of Murun. These carved standing stones are among Mongolia’s most important ancient monuments, offering a powerful sense of deep time and steppe ritual culture. Continue into Murun and check in to your hotel, with time to freshen up and enjoy a relaxed evening after the taiga days.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 11

Ulaanbaatar

Fly to Ulaanbaatar: Chinggis Khaan Statue & Kazakh family lunch. Fly back to Ulaanbaatar and, before returning to the city centre, detour onto the open steppe to visit Mongolia’s most iconic modern monument: the Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue Complex. The 40-metre stainless-steel figure dominates the landscape; if conditions allow, climb up to the viewing platform in the horse’s head for wide views towards the Khentii Mountains, Chinggis Khaan’s birthplace region. En route, stop in Nalaikh for a hosted lunch with a local Kazakh family, offering a warm introduction to Kazakh customs, home life and hospitality in Mongolia. Continue into the capital, check in, and enjoy a relaxed evening and dinner after the flight and touring.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 12

Ulaanbaatar

Enjoy a slower morning in the capital before a fitting cultural finale. In the afternoon, attend a performance by the Tsagaan Lavai Ensemble, showcasing Mongolia’s musical heritage through morin khuur (horsehead fiddle), traditional vocals and captivating throat singing, alongside folk melodies and dance elements. After the concert, gather for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant, then make a final stop at the State Department Store for last-minute souvenirs—cashmere, crafts and traditional food items are popular choices.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 13

Depart Ulaanbaatar

At the appropriate time, transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your departure, bidding farewell to our ground team and carrying home a final burst of Mongolian sound, colour and warmth.

Meals Included: Breakfast

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, GUIDE SUPPORT & TRIP STYLE: This is a 12-day small-group winter journey combining Ulaanbaatar’s cultural highlights with Terelj National Park adventures and a taiga immersion around Lake Khovsgol, culminating in the Khovsgol Reindeer Festival. You’ll be supported by an experienced English-speaking guide team plus private drivers for road transfers, and you’ll use domestic flights (Ulaanbaatar–Murun and return) to reduce long overland mileage. Winter conditions can affect road times and flight schedules, so flexibility is essential; your guide manages daily briefings, safety, comfort stops and cultural etiquette throughout.

ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation blends a comfortable city hotel in Ulaanbaatar with eco-camp stays in Terelj, a ger camp at Lake Khovsgol, and a ger/house camp during the festival days. Rural facilities are simpler and atmospheric (stove-heated gers, shared bathroom blocks may apply), and power can be generator-based. Single rooms can be limited outside the city; where available, they’re usually offered with a supplement and subject to availability.

MEALS, FOOD & WATER: Traditional Mongolian diets are meat- and dairy-heavy, and there are opportunities to try local staples such as dry curd and fermented mare’s milk. In the ger camps, however, meals are generally Western-style, sometimes with an Asian influence—typically soup and salad, followed by a main course and dessert. Vegetarians are generally well catered for; if you are vegetarian or have other dietary requirements, please inform us in advance. Breakfasts vary by location: some are buffets while others are set, usually cereal, bread and possibly a hot dish. On some days, a packed lunch is provided and is often still a proper meal (though without the soup). Drink sealed bottled water or water arranged by the team, and keep hydration in mind in cold, dry air. Tea, coffee, soft drinks, beer, vodka and (most of the time) wine are available to buy at the ger camps. There is also the opportunity to buy snacks in Ulaanbaatar and on a couple of other occasions when driving through towns or villages. Remote regions have limited choice and supply chains, so flexibility with meal timings and menus is helpful.

WEATHER & WHAT TO PACK (WINTER): Winter in Mongolia is cold and dry, with temperatures often dropping to -20°C or lower, especially in January and February. The air is crisp and skies are frequently clear, but wind-chill can be significant. Pack thermal base layers, insulated mid-layers, a down jacket, a windproof outer shell, lined trousers, warm hat, neck gaiter, insulated gloves (plus a spare pair), and winter boots with good grip. Lip balm, moisturiser and sunglasses are essential; batteries drain quickly in cold—carry a power bank and keep spare batteries warm.

ACTIVITY LEVEL, COMFORT & SAFETY: Activity is easy to moderate: the hike to Aryapala Meditation Temple, gentle horse riding (conditions permitting), and a dog sledding experience in Terelj, plus walking on snow/ice and time outdoors at Khovsgol. Follow guide instructions closely for dog sledding and dress warmly for extended time outside. Road travel can be bumpy in places; keep medication and valuables accessible and use soft-sided luggage for easier loading. Mobile coverage is limited outside towns—expect digital downtime.

KHOVSGOL REINDEER FESTIVAL: The festival is a community celebration rather than a staged show. Expect reindeer parades/races, traditional dress, music and local performances, plus time with Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders to learn about herding, seasonal movements and taiga life. Events are largely outdoors, often in open terrain with wind exposure and cold temperatures; timings can shift, and the best approach is to stay flexible while your guide positions the group for the strongest viewing and respectful interactions.

PHOTOGRAPHY & CULTURAL ETIQUETTE: This tour is exceptional for photography—snowy steppe, taiga forest, reindeer culture and winter light. Always ask before photographing individuals, particularly during festival activities and when visiting families; your guide can help with introductions and permissions. Dress modestly at religious sites and show respect around sacred places and community settings. Protect cameras from cold and condensation, keep spare batteries warm, and use dry bags or cases to manage snow and moisture.

MONGOLIAN VISA & ENTRY: Generally, travellers from the UK, USA, Canada and EU do not usually need a visa to enter Mongolia, but rules can change. It is your responsibility to check current requirements with the relevant embassy/consulate (including transit countries) and to ensure your passport meets validity rules before travel.
