Lake Khovsgol, Terkhiin Tsagaan and Central Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar to Ulaanbaatar – 15 days

This 15-day Mongolia Lakes & Wilderness Expedition explores the country’s quieter northern and central regions, combining great lakes, river valleys, volcanic landscapes, hot springs and nomadic culture. Begin in Ulaanbaatar, then travel north to Amarbayasgalant Monastery and the Selenge River region before continuing to Ikh Uul for a hosted rural family experience. From here, journey to Lake Khovsgol, Mongolia’s “Blue Pearl”, for shoreline walks, horse riding and time in the crisp northern landscape.

Continue south through Shine Ider to Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake and Khorgo Volcano, where lava fields, crater views and open steppe create a dramatic change of scenery. After a restorative stay at Tsenkher Hot Springs, visit Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu Monastery, then finish at Khogno Khan’s dunes and rocky hills before returning to Ulaanbaatar for a cultural performance and farewell dinner.

LAKE KHOVSGOL WILDERNESS: Travel north to Lake Khovsgol, Mongolia’s “Blue Pearl”, where clear freshwater, forested mountains and cool taiga air create one of the country’s most beautiful natural settings. Spend time by the lakeshore with gentle walks, horse riding and quiet moments in the northern landscape. After several days on the road, Khovsgol gives the journey space to slow down, with time to absorb the stillness, changing light and wide horizons that make this region feel distinct from both the steppe and the Gobi.

TERKHIIN TSAGAAN LAKE & KHORGO VOLCANO: Explore one of central Mongolia’s most atmospheric volcanic landscapes at Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, also known as the Great White Lake. Set among mountains, lava fields and open grasslands, the area feels remote, elemental and quietly dramatic. Walk to viewpoints around Khorgo Volcano, an extinct crater rising above the surrounding steppe, with broad views across the lake and dark volcanic terrain. A two-night stay gives the itinerary breathing space, allowing time for easy walks, photography and a deeper sense of wilderness.

NOMADIC MONGOLIA EXPERIENCE: The journey includes rural family-style stays and local encounters that offer a closer understanding of daily life beyond the capital and main tourist routes. Around Ikh Uul and Shine Ider, the focus is on herding rhythms, seasonal movement, food preparation, dairy traditions and the relationship between families, animals and landscape. These are quiet, informal experiences supported by your guide, giving travellers a grounded view of how traditional Mongolian life continues to adapt in remote northern and central regions.

AMARBAYASGALANT, KARAKORUM & KHOGNO KHAN: This route balances wilderness with Mongolia’s cultural depth. Visit Amarbayasgalant Monastery, one of the country’s most beautiful Buddhist sites, before continuing later in the journey to Kharkhorin, near ancient Karakorum, and Erdene Zuu Monastery. The final countryside section brings you to Khogno Khan and Bayangobi, where dunes, grassland and rocky hills meet in a compact “small Gobi” landscape. Together, these places add history, spirituality and visual variety to a journey shaped mainly by lakes, rivers and open country.

DAY 2

Amarbayasgalant

Leave Ulaanbaatar and drive north through Mongolia’s wide countryside towards Amarbayasgalant Monastery, one of the country’s most beautiful Buddhist sites. The road journey gives an immediate sense of scale: open steppe, grazing animals, distant hills and scattered rural settlements. On arrival, settle into your ger camp before visiting the monastery, set in a quiet valley with elegant architecture and a deeply contemplative atmosphere. Your guide explains its religious importance, survival through turbulent history and continued place in Mongolian Buddhist life. Dinner is served at camp, followed by your first night under Mongolia’s immense northern sky.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 3

Selenge River

Continue through northern Mongolia towards the Selenge River region, travelling through a changing landscape of valleys, low hills and rural settlements. Depending on timings, pass through or near Erdenet, one of Mongolia’s important provincial centres, before reaching quieter river country. In the afternoon, take a gentle walk around Togoo Uul, also known as Pot Mountain, an extinct volcanic formation rising above the surrounding steppe. The area offers broad views, birdlife and a strong sense of open country away from the better-known routes. Overnight in a ger camp, with dinner and time to enjoy the stillness.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 4

Ikh Uul

Travel deeper into rural northern Mongolia towards Ikh Uul, where the focus shifts from sightseeing to local life. Arrive at a hosted family-style stay or simple rural ger setting, depending on the final arrangements. This is a chance to understand how herding families live with the seasons, manage livestock, prepare food and adapt traditional rhythms to modern realities. With your guide assisting conversation, learn about dairy products, pasture, family routines and the practical challenges of remote living. The evening is unhurried, with dinner in a local setting and, if skies are clear, superb stargazing.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 5

Lake Khovsgol

After breakfast, continue towards Lake Khovsgol, one of Mongolia’s most celebrated natural landscapes. The journey is long and sometimes rough, but the arrival is memorable: pine forests, mountain air and the deep-blue water of Mongolia’s “Blue Pearl”. Stop en route for comfort breaks and local views before reaching the lakeshore and checking into your ger camp. The atmosphere here is cooler and calmer than the steppe, with forested slopes and a strong northern character. Spend the late afternoon walking near the shore, photographing the lake or simply absorbing the stillness of this vast freshwater landscape.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 6

Lake Khovsgol

Spend a full day around Lake Khovsgol, allowing the journey to slow after several overland travel days. The programme can be shaped around weather and local conditions: take a shoreline walk through larch forest, ride horses along lakeside trails, or join a local boat or lakeside excursion where operating conditions allow. The lake is known for its clear water, forested mountains and taiga atmosphere, making it one of Mongolia’s most beautiful wilderness areas. There is also time to relax at camp, enjoy the changing light over the water and experience the quiet pace of northern Mongolia.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 7

Shine Ider

Leave Lake Khovsgol and travel south via Murun towards Shine Ider, crossing broad valleys, grazing lands and rural settlements. This is a travel day, but it reveals Mongolia beyond the obvious highlights: small towns, livestock on the road, changing pasture and families moving through the landscape. Arrive at a simple ger camp or family-style rural stay and settle in for the evening. The purpose of this stop is not a major monument, but the journey itself — the distances, rural texture and quiet in-between places that give Mongolia its character. Dinner is served locally.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 8

Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake

Continue south towards Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, the Great White Lake, set in one of central Mongolia’s most striking volcanic regions. The scenery changes as valleys and grassland give way to darker lava fields, rocky hills and open water. Arrive near the lake and check into your ger camp for a two-night stay. The setting is spacious and atmospheric, with mountains, water and volcanic formations creating a different mood from Lake Khovsgol. After arrival, take a short walk near the shore or simply enjoy the evening light over the lake and surrounding steppe.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 9

Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake

Explore the volcanic landscapes around Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. Visit Khorgo Volcano, an extinct crater rising above the surrounding steppe, and walk to viewpoints for wide panoramas over lava fields, hills and the lake beyond. The area is ideal for easy to moderate walking, photography and a slower appreciation of Mongolia’s geological diversity. Later, return to the lakeshore for free time at camp. This second night is important for pacing, giving you a break from constant movement and allowing the wilderness to feel immersive rather than rushed. Dinner is served at camp.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10

Tsenkher Hot Springs

Leave the volcanic lake country and travel towards Tsenkher Hot Springs, breaking the journey at Tsetserleg if timings allow. This provincial town offers a useful glimpse of everyday Mongolian life, with a local market and a small museum often housed in a former temple complex. Continue through wooded valleys and pastureland to reach Tsenkher, where natural thermal springs rise in a peaceful rural setting. After several days of overland travel, the hot springs provide a welcome change of pace. Settle into your camp and enjoy an evening soak in the mineral-rich waters before dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 11

Tsenkher Hot Springs

Spend a full day at Tsenkher Hot Springs, giving the itinerary a valuable rest point. The day can be as relaxed or active as you wish: enjoy the thermal pools, take short walks in the surrounding valley, read, photograph camp life or simply recover from the long drives across northern and central Mongolia. Your guide can help arrange optional local activities where available, depending on season and supplier arrangements. This slower day gives the journey a more comfortable rhythm and allows travellers to enjoy Mongolia’s landscapes without feeling constantly in transit. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger camp

DAY 12

Kharkhorin

Travel to Kharkhorin, near the site of ancient Karakorum, once the capital of the Mongol Empire. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first major Buddhist monastery, built partly from stones of the former imperial city. Its white stupas, temple courtyards and mountain backdrop create one of central Mongolia’s strongest cultural moments. Continue to the Karakorum Museum for historical context on the city’s role in trade, diplomacy and imperial administration. Overnight in a ger camp near Kharkhorin, with time to reflect on how this quiet valley once stood at the centre of a vast empire.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 13

Khogno Khan

Drive towards Khogno Khan and the Bayangobi “small Gobi” landscape, where sand dunes, grassland and rocky hills sit close together in a compact and photogenic region. This area offers a gentler desert-style experience without repeating the full southern Gobi route. Visit the dunes and, depending on conditions, enjoy a short camel ride or a walk through the sand and steppe. There may also be time to try traditional archery at camp or visit nearby temple ruins. Overnight in a ger camp, surrounded by open views, warm evening light and classic central Mongolian scenery.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 14

Ulaanbaatar

Return to Ulaanbaatar across the rolling grasslands of central Mongolia. The drive gives a final chance to watch the landscape change from rural steppe to the expanding edges of the capital. On arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy some time at leisure. You may wish to browse for cashmere, felt crafts or local souvenirs, or take a short city walk with your guide. In the evening, attend a Mongolian cultural performance featuring music, dance and throat singing, followed by a farewell dinner. It is a fitting close to a journey through lakes, monasteries, nomadic lands and wilderness.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 15

Depart Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your onward flight. Your local team assists with departure timings and luggage, ensuring a smooth end to the journey. Depart Mongolia with memories of northern rivers, family stays, Lake Khovsgol, volcanic landscapes, hot springs, Karakorum, Khogno Khan and the vast open country that connects them. This itinerary is designed for travellers who want Mongolia beyond the obvious highlights — a summer wilderness journey with culture, comfort, movement and space, shaped around the country’s quieter northern and central regions.

Meals Included: Breakfast

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, GUIDE SUPPORT & TRIP STYLE: This is a 15-day small-group Mongolia wilderness journey through the country’s northern and central regions, designed for travellers who want a quieter alternative to the classic Gobi route. Travel is by private vehicle with an experienced English-speaking local guide and professional drivers. Expect long driving days, mixed road conditions and remote countryside, balanced by multi-night stays at Lake Khovsgol, Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake and Tsenkher Hot Springs.

ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation combines a comfortable hotel in Ulaanbaatar with ger camps, rural camps and family-style stays in the countryside. Ger camps are atmospheric and comfortable by local standards, usually with proper beds and shared bathroom facilities. Power, hot water and Wi-Fi may be limited or generator-based in remote areas. Single rooms are available with a supplement where possible, subject to availability, though rural stays may have limited single occupancy.

MEALS, FOOD & WATER: Meals are included as specified in the itinerary, with most countryside days on a full-board basis. Mongolian cuisine is traditionally meat- and dairy-led, though ger camps usually serve more international-style meals such as soups, salads, rice, pasta, vegetables and simple desserts. Vegetarian meals can usually be arranged with advance notice. Drink bottled or purified water arranged by the team, and keep personal snacks handy for longer road journeys.

WEATHER, SEASONS & WHAT TO PACK: This expedition is best suited to the warmer travel season, generally from June to September, when northern and central Mongolia are most accessible. Days can be warm and sunny, but evenings by lakes, rivers and higher ground can be cool. Pack layered clothing, a light waterproof, sun hat, sunglasses, SPF, comfortable walking shoes, a warm evening layer and a small daypack. A scarf or buff is useful for dust on rural roads.

WALKING, RIDING & ACTIVITY LEVEL: The activity level is moderate. The itinerary includes short walks, lakeshore trails, volcanic viewpoints, monastery visits, optional horse riding and time on uneven ground. There is no technical trekking, but travellers should be comfortable with long drives, basic rural facilities and occasional bumpy off-road sections. Horse riding and camel riding are locally guided and can usually be adjusted according to confidence and comfort level.

NOMADIC CULTURE & LOCAL ENCOUNTERS: Family-style stays and local encounters are an important part of the journey. Around Ikh Uul, Shine Ider and other rural areas, the focus is on herding life, seasonal movement, food preparation, dairy traditions and the relationship between people, animals and pasture. These experiences are informal and respectful, supported by your guide, and may vary depending on weather, family availability and local conditions.

LAKES, HOT SPRINGS & REMOTE LANDSCAPES: The route includes Lake Khovsgol, Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, Khorgo Volcano, the Selenge River region and Tsenkher Hot Springs. These areas involve long distances and changing road conditions, but they provide the journey’s strongest wilderness character. The itinerary is deliberately paced with multi-night stops to avoid constant movement and to give travellers time to enjoy the landscapes properly.

MONGOLIAN VISA & ENTRY: Many UK, EU, USA and Canadian passport holders do not usually require a visa for short tourist visits to Mongolia, but rules can change. Travellers should ensure their passport meets current validity requirements and confirm entry rules for Mongolia and any transit countries before travel. We will advise on current requirements at the time of booking.
