Beginning in Ulaanbaatar, the tour blends Mongolia’s vibrant capital life with unforgettable landscapes and cultural traditions. Travel by train to the Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, explore the Gobi Desert’s red rock valleys, and continue by 4X4 across the Eastern Steppes to Gun-Galuut and Toson Khulstai, where gazelles roam freely under vast skies.
The adventure deepens as you reach the spiritual lands along the Onon River, home to the Mongol Buryat and rich with stories of Genghis Khan. Along the way, encounter diverse wildlife, ancient ruins, and Mongolia’s living nomadic culture — all guided with comfort and care by Asian Geographical’s expert team.
NAADAM FESTIVAL IN ULAANBAATAR: Begin your Mongolia holiday with the colourful Naadam Festival, showcasing traditional wrestling, archery, and horse racing. Discover Mongolia’s remote eastern regions on a 13-day journey combining the Naadam Festival, East Gobi wildlife, sacred river valleys, and the Khan Khentii mountains. Stay in traditional ger camps, explore vast steppe landscapes, and connect with nomadic culture on this expertly guided adventure through Mongolia’s wild and spiritual heart.
Arrive in Mongolia’s lively capital, Ulaanbaatar, where your guide will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel, the luxurious Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar. This five-star hotel offers modern comfort in the city centre, giving you a chance to rest and settle in after your journey. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with your guide and fellow travellers. You’ll also attend a briefing about the tour ahead. This is a perfect moment to get to know the group and prepare for the exciting experiences awaiting you across Mongolia’s remote wilderness.
Today you travel on the famous Trans-Mongolian Railway, heading deep into Mongolia’s eastern Gobi Desert. Watch the green steppes slowly change into arid, open desert as the train moves south. Disembark at Shiveegobi and travel by vehicle to the striking Red Rock Valley in the Ikh Nart Nature Reserve. Your home for the next two nights is the Red Rock Ger Camp, where comfortable ger tents are set amongst dramatic desert landscapes. Surrounded by cliffs and open plains, this peaceful setting offers the chance to spot wildlife such as ibex and mountain sheep as you settle into your new surroundings.
Spend the day exploring Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, a protected area known for its wildlife and conservation work. The reserve is home to rare species like Mongolian gazelles, wild donkeys, lynx cats, and many types of birds, including cinereous vultures. Bird lovers can enjoy spotting some of the 120 species found here. Conservation teams work year-round to protect these animals and their fragile desert environment. Enjoy the vast silence of the Gobi as you return to your ger camp in the evening, surrounded by the warm colours of the desert sunset and the stillness of the wide open landscape.
Today, set out in a 4X4 vehicle, crossing the open Eastern Steppes and passing the Herlen River. You’ll reach Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve, where rivers, marshes, mountains, and grassy plains all meet. This rich mix of habitats supports diverse wildlife, including swans and cranes in the wetlands. Enjoy wildlife spotting in the afternoon, and take in the peaceful scenery. As night falls, settle into another ger camp located within this natural haven. The quiet, open skies and surrounding grasslands provide a relaxing escape and a chance to experience Mongolia’s great outdoors in a peaceful, authentic setting.
Travel deeper into eastern Mongolia, passing through Öndörhaan and into Dornod Province. Your destination is the vast Toson Khulstai Nature Reserve, where the untouched steppe stretches for miles in every direction. This remote area is home to Mongolian gazelles, marmots, and the rare white-naped crane. Tonight, you’ll stay in a ger camp right in the heart of the reserve. With no cities or lights around, the stars here shine incredibly bright. Enjoy a peaceful night under the open sky, with the sounds of the steppe surrounding you and the beauty of Mongolia’s wildest region right outside your door.
Today is dedicated to exploring the Toson Khulstai steppe on foot. Set out for a hike across this untouched landscape, home to wildlife such as gazelles, cranes, and wild boars. Your guide will help spot birds and animals along the way. You’ll also travel in a 4X4 to reach the best hiking spots, allowing you to cover more ground in this vast environment. After a day of adventure, return to camp and enjoy a traditional Mongolian dinner with your group. Share stories and take in the incredible stillness of the landscape as the stars appear above.
Begin the journey north towards the Onon River. As you leave the open plains behind, the terrain becomes more mountainous, marking the edge of the Siberian region. Arrive in Ölziyt Hairhan, a sacred and peaceful place near the Onon River, part of Asia’s longest free-flowing river system. Your ger camp is set within this lush, spiritual landscape. Known for its rich biodiversity and cultural importance, the area provides a quiet escape in the wild. Relax at camp and enjoy the views of birch forests, flowing rivers, and distant hills as you settle into this new part of Mongolia.
Spend the day exploring the area around the Onon River, where the Mongol Buryat people live in wooden cabins and continue traditional herding practices. Walk along the riverbanks and learn about the local way of life. If the opportunity arises, meet a Buryat shaman and learn about the spiritual beliefs and rituals that are still part of daily life here. The calm river, the green forests, and the nearby hills offer a different side of Mongolia—more gentle and personal. Return to camp in the evening for another peaceful night by the river’s edge.
Hike to the village of Dadal, believed by many to be the birthplace of Genghis Khan. This quiet village sits in the hills and forests and is known for its efforts in cultural and environmental conservation. Visit local homes, try the locally baked bread—considered among the best in the country—and gain insight into Mongolian traditions. The village atmosphere offers a calm break from the wild steppes and a look into rural Mongolian life. Return to your ger camp in the evening and enjoy the peaceful surroundings as your time in this special region comes to an end.
Drive to the vast Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, one of Mongolia’s most untouched natural regions. Visit the ruins of Baldan Bereeven Monastery, a beautiful reminder of Mongolia’s Buddhist past. You’ll also see the Öglögchiin Wall, also called the Almsgivers’ Wall, stretching across the hills. This remote area is thought to be the final resting place of Genghis Khan. For your stay, you can choose a traditional ger camp with a nomadic family lunch or opt for the upscale Terelj Resort with a spa. Either way, you’ll be surrounded by incredible nature and deep history.
Explore more of the Khan Khentii wilderness today. Hike through dense forest paths and along the Öglögchiin Wall, which runs for nearly two miles. Because tourism is limited here, wildlife such as moose, deer, and wolves still thrive. It’s a rare chance to experience Mongolia’s wild nature without crowds. This peaceful and remote part of the country offers a deep connection to both landscape and history. After your hike, return to your accommodation—either your ger camp or resort—and enjoy the quiet evening surrounded by the sights and sounds of Mongolia’s protected forests and mountain valleys.
Return to Ulaanbaatar by road, completing your journey through Mongolia’s wilderness. Settle back into your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening in the capital. You may wish to visit Narantuul Market, known for its wide range of souvenirs, antiques, and handicrafts. It’s a great spot to pick up a unique memento of your travels. In the evening, choose between a traditional Mongolian dinner or a fine dining experience at the Shangri-La hotel. This final night is a chance to reflect on the incredible variety of landscapes, wildlife, and cultures you’ve experienced across this unforgettable country.
Enjoy your breakfast in Ulaanbaatar before your transfer to the airport. As you depart, take with you vivid memories of Mongolia’s wide steppes, desert sunsets, and the warmth of its people. This journey through Mongolia’s wild places and cultural heartlands has offered both discovery and peace. You’ll leave not just with photographs and souvenirs, but with stories and insights from one of the most extraordinary and untouched places in the world.
