Golden Eagle Festival, Altai Kazakh Culture and the Gobi Desert

Ulaanbaatar to Ulaanbaatar – 13 Days

Expedition Overview

This 13-day Mongolia small-group journey delivers a rare triple hit: Ulaanbaatar culture, Altai Kazakh heritage and the epic landscapes of the Gobi. Begin in the capital with Zaisan’s panoramic views and Bogd Khan’s Winter Palace, then head to the Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue and the granite valleys of Terelj for Turtle Rock and the Aryapala Meditation Temple hike. Fly west to Olgii, gateway to Bayan-Ölgii, where markets, a mosque and local museums set the scene for a true far-west immersion—off-road into Altai Tavan Bogd for a hosted Kazakh family stay and a hike/horse option along the glacial-fed Potanin “Milk” River.

The journey peaks with two full days at the Golden Eagle Festival, watching eagle hunters compete alongside thrilling horse games and traditional costume judging. Fly back east, then continue into central Mongolia’s granite reserve at Baga Gazryn Chuluu before pushing deep into the Gobi—Yol Valley’s cool canyon, the Khongor Sand Dunes with camel-herding families, and the legendary Flaming Cliffs. Return to Ulaanbaatar for a final folk performance and farewell dinner, then depart.

Highlights

GOLDEN EAGLE FESTIVAL MONGOLIA (OLGII, BAYAN-OLGII): Spend two full days at Mongolia’s most famous cultural event in the far west: the Golden Eagle Festival in Olgii. Watch Kazakh eagle hunters arrive on horseback in a grand parade, dressed in traditional attire and carrying their birds with immense pride. The main competitions test the eagles’ speed, control and accuracy as they fly from height back to their handlers. Between events, browse craft stalls, meet local families and absorb the atmosphere of a living tradition rather than a staged performance. Day two adds high-adrenaline horse games such as Kokpar and Tenge Ilu coin-grabbing, plus costume judging and the prize ceremony—an unforgettable showcase of Altai heritage.

ALTAI TAVAN BOGD NATIONAL PARK TOUR: Go properly off-grid in Mongolia’s far west with a journey into the Altai Tavan Bogd region. After a rugged drive across open steppe and mountain foothills, arrive at a local Kazakh family for a hosted overnight stay—simple, warm and deeply authentic. Learn how families live with the seasons, prepare food, manage herds and preserve traditions shaped by remote landscapes. The next day brings classic Altai scenery: stop at President Ovoo, then continue to the glacial-fed Potanin “Milk” River, choosing to hike or horse ride depending on conditions. Snow-capped views, wide valleys and true silence define this section, before returning to Olgii for a more comfortable ger camp night.

GOBI DESERT TOUR MONGOLIA (KHONGOR SAND DUNES + CAMEL HERDING): Experience the Gobi at its most iconic. Begin at the Yol Valley canyon, where shaded rock walls and a stream create a cool microclimate in the middle of desert country, then continue to the immense Khongor Sand Dunes, stretching for around 170 km. Visit the green Khongor River oasis at the dunes’ base, then meet a local Bactrian camel-breeding family to understand desert nomadic life. Enjoy a camel ride and learn how camel wool is used to make practical products for harsh conditions. Desert evenings here are pure atmosphere—wide horizons, wind-shaped sand and a sky dense with stars.

FLAMING CLIFFS MONGOLIA (BAYANZAG DINOSAUR FOSSILS): Walk one of Mongolia’s most legendary landscapes: the Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag), famous for Roy Chapman Andrews’ discovery of dinosaur egg nests. The red-orange cliffs glow in late light, and short hikes reveal eroded gullies, fossil-bearing layers and sweeping desert views. Your guide explains why this place transformed palaeontology and how the Gobi’s ancient environments preserved such extraordinary remains. It’s not a museum experience—it’s geology and deep time under your feet, with scale you can feel. After exploring, return to camp with time to process the day’s contrasts: scientific history, raw desert beauty and the stillness that makes the Gobi so compelling.

Why Asian Geographical?

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Ulaanbaatar

On arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, you’ll be met by the Juulchin team and transferred into Ulaanbaatar. After check-in and time to refresh, begin with a panoramic city introduction at the Zaisan Memorial, a hilltop viewpoint and Soviet-era WWII monument with wide views over the capital. Continue to the Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum, once the early-1900s residence of Mongolia’s last religious leader and emperor, with richly detailed rooms and artefacts that bring the transition from empire to modern Mongolia into focus. Return to the hotel for a relaxed evening and dinner.

Meals Included: Dinner

DAY 2

Terelj National Park

Start the day with one of Mongolia’s most striking modern monuments: the Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue Complex, a towering stainless-steel landmark set on open steppe. After lunch nearby, drive to Terelj National Park, known for dramatic granite formations and wide valleys. Visit Turtle Rock, then take an afternoon hike to Aryapala Meditation Temple, set on a hillside with peaceful views and a sense of quiet away from the city. Settle into your eco camp this evening, enjoying fresh air, open skies and a relaxed dinner after an active day outdoors.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3

Bayan Olgii

Transfer to the airport for your flight west to Olgii (Ulgii), gateway to Mongolia’s Kazakh region. On arrival, start getting a feel for local life with a visit to the town market, where everyday trade, textiles and food reflect the area’s distinctive culture. Continue to a Muslim mosque, highlighting the strong Kazakh identity of Bayan-Ölgii, then visit the provincial museum for context on history, ethnography and the Altai environment. The day is a gentle orientation before heading deeper into remote mountain landscapes.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4

Altai Tavan Bogd

Travel further into the Altai region, leaving the town behind for wide steppe, rugged foothills and increasingly dramatic mountain horizons. After a half-day drive on rough tracks, arrive in the Altai Tavan Bogd area and meet your host Kazakh family. This is a rare chance to see daily life in Mongolia’s far west—hospitality, food preparation, herding rhythms and family traditions shaped by the landscape. Spend the afternoon settling in, sharing stories and learning about local customs. Overnight with the family, simple but deeply authentic, under clear skies and true silence.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Bayan Olgii

Begin with mountain scenery—visit snow-capped viewpoints around the Tsengel/Altai range and stop at President Ovoo, a traditional stone cairn (ovoo) with spiritual significance. Continue to the legendary Potanin “Milk” River, choosing to hike or horse ride depending on conditions and preference, with time to absorb the glacial-fed valley landscapes. Later, drive back across the off-road tracks to Olgii for a more comfortable night in a ger camp, with a hot meal and time to rest after a long, memorable day in the far west.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6

Bayan Olgii

Today is all about Mongolia’s Kazakh heritage at the Golden Eagle Festival. The atmosphere builds from the morning’s grand horseback parade, as eagle hunters present their traditional gear, horsemanship and ceremonial dress—judged with real pride and precision. The main events follow: eagles are released from height and scored on speed, control and how cleanly they return to their handlers. Between rounds, soak up the festival energy—music, costumes, craft stalls and the buzz of families arriving from across Bayan-Olgii. It’s a rare window into living tradition rather than a staged show, with the Altai landscape as a dramatic backdrop.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7

Bayan Olgii

The festival continues with deeper competition and high-adrenaline horse sports. Eagles are tested again—speed, accuracy and hunting instincts—while the Kazakh riders showcase remarkable control in traditional games. Watch Kökpar, Tenge Ilu and Kyz Kuar — traditional Kazakh horse games that test speed, skill and control. Kyz Kuar adds playful rivalry, while traditional costume judging brings colour and craftsmanship to centre stage. By afternoon, the strongest teams emerge and the event closes with a prize ceremony celebrating both skill and heritage. Return to camp with the day’s images still vivid—golden eagles, fast horses and the proud rhythm of the Altai.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8

Baga Gazryn Chuluu Nature Reserve

Fly back to Ulaanbaatar, then continue south by road into Dundgobi Province. Your destination is Baga Gazryn Chuluu Nature Reserve, a striking granite landscape rising from the plains, with canyons, rock towers and big-sky silence. Explore the reserve’s highlights, including the ruins of Lovonchamba Monastery, and natural features such as eye-healing spring water and caves (including Jargalant Cave), depending on conditions and time. The day blends geology, culture and quiet walking in a rarely visited region. Settle into camp this evening for dinner under the stars.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9

Omnogobi & Yol Valley

Drive deeper into the Gobi, transitioning from steppe into wide desert basins and rugged mountain silhouettes as you reach Omnogobi Province. After the journey, visit Yol Valley, named for the lammergeier vulture, where a narrow canyon cuts through the Gurvansaikhan landscape. Walk along rock walls and a streambed, with surprisingly cool air in the gorge. In many years, a strip of ice can remain here until late June—an unforgettable contrast in the heart of the desert. Continue to your lodge for a restful evening after a long but rewarding travel day.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10

Khongor Sand Dunes

Start early for the Khongor River oasis, a ribbon of green at the foot of Mongolia’s greatest dunes. The Khongor Sand Dunes stretch for around 170 km—vast, sculpted and constantly shifting with the wind. Later, visit a local camel-breeding family to learn how Bactrian camels are raised in desert conditions. Take a ride on a two-humped camel and discover how camel wool is processed into practical goods—warm, durable and perfectly suited to the climate. Return to your ger camp with time to enjoy the quiet desert evening and a deep, star-filled sky.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 11

Omnogobi & Yol Valley

Travel across classic Gobi scenery to the legendary Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, where Roy Chapman Andrews’ team discovered the first dinosaur egg nests a century ago. The cliffs glow red and orange, especially in late-day light, while short hikes reveal eroded gullies, fossil-rich layers and wide desert views. Your guide shares the site’s palaeontological story and explains why this landscape became world-famous. After time to walk, photograph and absorb the scale of the red-orange cliffs, return to your lodge in the Yol Valley / Omnogobi area for dinner and overnight.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 12

Ulaanbaatar

Fly back to Ulaanbaatar in the morning and enjoy a slower afternoon—time for last-minute shopping, café stops, or simply resting after the Gobi and Altai distances. In the evening, gather for a lively Mongolian cultural performance featuring traditional dance, song and music—an energising contrast to the country’s quiet landscapes. Finish with a farewell dinner at a local restaurant, a final chance to reflect on the journey’s arc: the Altai’s eagle hunters, remote camps, granite reserves and the vast Gobi. Overnight in the capital in a comfortable hotel.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 13

Depart Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your onward flight. Your Juulchin team assists with timings and logistics, ensuring a smooth departure.

Meals Included: Breakfast

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, GUIDE SUPPORT & TRIP STYLE: This is a 13-day small-group Mongolia journey linking Ulaanbaatar, the Altai and the Gobi, with domestic flights to/from Ölgii and long overland drives on mixed road and off-road tracks. Days are well paced, but distances are real and conditions can change quickly in remote regions; flexibility is part of travelling well here. Your English-speaking guide manages daily briefings, safety, timings, comfort stops and cultural etiquette—especially important for the Kazakh family stay and festival days.

ACCOMMODATION, MEALS, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation blends city hotels with ger camps/lodges and a one-night Kazakh family homestay in the Altai. Ger camp facilities are generally comfortable but simple and can include shared bathroom blocks and generator power. Mongolia’s traditional diet is meat- and dairy-heavy, and you’ll have the chance to taste local products such as dry curd and fermented mare’s milk. In ger camps, meals are typically more Western-style (often soup/salad, main course and dessert), sometimes with an Asian influence. Vegetarian travellers are generally well catered for—please advise dietary requirements in advance.

FOOD, DRINKS & SNACKS: Breakfasts vary by location (buffet or set), usually including cereal, bread and sometimes a hot dish. On some touring days, a packed lunch is provided and is typically still a proper meal. Tea, coffee, soft drinks, beer, vodka and often wine can usually be purchased at ger camps. You can also buy snacks in Ulaanbaatar and occasionally in towns/villages en route—useful for long drives and festival days.

WEATHER & WHAT TO PACK: This autumn departure can bring sharp contrasts, especially between western Mongolia, the Altai and the Gobi. Expect cool mornings, mild sunny days, cold evenings, wind and possible early snow in higher areas. Pack warm layers, a fleece or insulated jacket, windproof outer layer, hat, gloves, sunglasses and sturdy walking shoes. A scarf or buff is useful for dust on off-road drives. Festival days are mostly outdoors, so dress for long periods in open terrain. Carry lip balm, moisturiser and a power bank.

WALKING, COMFORT & PRACTICALITIES: Activity is easy to moderate: short hikes and walks at viewpoints, monasteries and desert/steppe landscapes, plus time on your feet at markets and cultural sites. Bring a small daypack for water, extra layers and essentials. Road travel can be bumpy on off-road sectors; keep medication and valuables accessible and use soft-sided luggage for easier loading. Mobile coverage is limited outside towns—plan for offline time.

MONGOLIAN VISA & ENTRY: Many travellers from the UK, USA, Canada and EU do not usually require a visa for Mongolia, but rules can change. It remains your responsibility to meet entry requirements and to check with the relevant embassy/consulate for Mongolia and any transit countries before travel. Ensure your passport validity meets current entry rules.

THE GOLDEN EAGLE FESTIVALWHAT TO EXPECT: The Eagle Festival is a proud, living tradition, not a staged performance. Expect a lively outdoor atmosphere—horseback parades, eagle-handling competitions, cultural displays and horse games—alongside local families and visiting teams. Viewing is mostly in open terrain with wind and sun exposure, and timings can shift. The best approach is to stay flexible and let your guide position you for the strongest viewing, comfort and safety.

PHOTOGRAPHY & CULTURAL ETIQUETTE: This tour is exceptional for photography—eagles and riders, desert light, and big-sky landscapes. Always ask before photographing people, particularly during the festival and the Kazakh family stay. Your guide will advise on respectful behaviour at monasteries and at ovoos (sacred cairns), and can help facilitate genuine interactions rather than “drive-by” encounters. Keep lenses protected from dust/snow, and carry spare batteries close to your body to keep them warm.
