Bhutan Jomolhari Trek

Paro to Paro – 13 Days

Expedition Overview

This small-group adventure blends Bhutan’s most iconic pilgrimage with a demanding, high-altitude trek through remote Himalayan valleys. After arriving in Paro, warm up with the Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) hike and final preparations with your Asian Geographical expert guide and trekking crew. Then begin the Jomolhari trail from Sharna Zampa, following river gorges and forested paths through lush alpine forests to high yak pastures beneath the great peaks, including the sacred Mount Jomolhari.

Over consecutive camping days, the landscape opens into wide alpine basins where yaks graze and prayer flags mark the high points of the route. Here, trekkers are treated to incredible scenery, with panoramic views of snow-capped mountains and pristine valleys. Pass crossings deliver the trek’s biggest vistas—snow ridgelines, glacial valleys and a powerful sense of remoteness—before the trail eases down towards the roadhead and a well-earned return to comfort. Along the way, Jangothang Base Camp stands out as a key highlight and acclimatization spot, offering some of the most spectacular camping in Bhutan.

Highlights

BHUTAN JOMOLHARI TREK: Trek from Sharna Zampa through forest and river valleys to high yak pastures and alpine meadows, camping comfortably with a dedicated crew. Your expert guide manages pacing, acclimatisation and daily routines, keeping the moderate challenge safe, sociable and well organised. A designated rest day at scenic spots like Jangothang allows for acclimatization, recovery, and optional short excursions.

NYILE LA & YAKLELA PASS: Tackle a stiff climb through alpine meadows to reach Nyile La and Yaklela pass, the highest points of the trek. These passes offer a panoramic view of the snow capped peaks, including Mount Jomolhari, Jomolhari 2, Jichu Drakey and Tsheringmeigang. These dramatic vantage points are perfect for photographs and well-earned recovery.

TAKTSANG (TIGER'S NESTHIKE: Begin with the Taktsang hike above Paro—an iconic, meaningful ascent that sets the tone and builds fitness. It also helps the small group settle in, refine kit choices, and understand the walking rhythm before the trek begins.

BHUTAN CULTURE AFTER THE TREK: After Barshong, recover in Thimphu with craft and weaving visits, then explore Punakha’s dzong, chorten walk and suspension bridge. Return to Paro for the National Museum, Kyichu Lhakhang and a traditional farmhouse evening.

Why Asian Geographical?

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Paro

On a clear day, your flight into Paro is a spectacular introduction to Bhutan, passing the southern “duars” and, at times, distant Himalayan giants before dropping into a narrow valley that suddenly opens to fields, villages and the river runway. On arrival, complete immigration using your Visa Approval Letter and passport, then collect baggage. Outside the terminal, meet your Asian Geographical expert guide, who will support the small group throughout and manage practicalities from the outset. Transfer to your hotel in Paro and take time to rest after the journey. Depending on arrival time, your guide may offer a short orientation walk or a briefing on the trek ahead—altitude awareness, packing priorities, and how the camping team will operate on the trail. Evening at leisure for an early night.

Meals Included: Dinner

DAY 2

Paro

Total Hike Time 4-5 hrs. Today you hike to Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest Monastery, Bhutan'’s most iconic pilgrimage site, dramatically set on cliff facing rocks above the Paro Valley. Walking at a steady small-group pace, the trail climbs through pine forest with regular breaks for water, photos and acclimatisation. Your guide shares the story of Guru Rinpoche, believed to have arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated in the caves—foundations of Bhutanese Mahayana Buddhism. Taktsang was badly damaged by fire in 1998 and has since been carefully restored, making the visit both moving and visually striking. After descending, the afternoon is free to recover. If you wish, browse Paro’s craft market and shops for textiles, masks and local handicrafts, while your guide helps with last-minute trek checks.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 3

Thangthangkha

Distance: 15 km | Time: 6 hrs | Camp: 3,610 m. Your trek begins at Sharna Zampa, a well-known trailhead for Jomolhari routes, so it is common to see other trekking teams early on. The first day can feel demanding, with muddy sections and a rhythm of short ascents and descents, but the scenery quickly rewards the effort. Follow the Paro Chhu River as the path crosses rustic wooden bridges and threads through mixed forest—rhododendron forests, alpine forests, oak, pine, fir and birch—alive with colour in spring. The trail gradually ascends through these forests, offering a scenic and immersive experience. A popular lunch stop is the open clearing near Shing Karap, where trekkers are served a hot lunch as trees part to reveal distant peaks and a sense of the high country ahead. By late afternoon, reach the meadow camps at Thangthangkha. Your crew sets up tents, a kitchen shelter and basic toilet facilities; open fires are not permitted.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4

Jangothang

Distance: 13 km | Time: 5 hrs | Camp: 4,080 m. The trek to Jangothang begins as the trail continues up-valley towards Jangothang, one of the Himalaya’s classic base camps famed for its close view of Mt Jomolhari rising to the northwest near the Tibet border. Compared with yesterday, the walking is generally steadier, though wet ground can still slow progress. You pass through alpine meadows and enter yak herding country, where yak herders live in woven tents and graze their herds in the high-altitude pastures—an immediate sense of Bhutan’s mountain livelihoods. Arrive at Jangothang and settle into base camp, where permanent toilets and a kitchen shelter support a comfortable routine at altitude. The remainder of the day is deliberately light, allowing you to hydrate, rest and acclimatise. Your guide will brief the group on evening temperatures, pacing for the next days, and symptoms to report early—key to a safe, enjoyable high-altitude trek.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Jangothang

This is a designated rest day at Jangothang for acclimatization, which is essential to help your body adjust and reduce the risk of altitude illness. After a relaxed breakfast, take an optional day hike with your guide, chosen to match conditions and the group'’s energy. A popular option is a ridge walk north of camp, typically around four hours return, delivering superb panoramas of Mt Jichu Drake, the commanding mass of Mt Jomolhari, and breathtaking views of snow capped peaks all around. Back at camp, spend the afternoon resting, stretching, or photographing the valley'’s changing light and yak herder camps in the distance. Your trekking crew keeps routines smooth—hot drinks, warm meals, and practical support—so you can focus on recovery. This is also a good moment for kit checks: boots, layers, gloves, headtorch and hydration, with your guide advising on what to keep accessible for the pass day ahead.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6

Lingzhi

Distance: 18 km | Time: 6–7 hrs | Pass: Nyiele La Pass 4,870 m | Camp: 4,010 m. Today brings a striking change in landscape as you leave the Paro Chhu valley and climb into a higher, glacial environment with moraines, tundra-like slopes, and glacial rivers winding through the rugged terrain. The main challenge is the stiff climb to Nyiele La Pass, a steep ascent that demands a measured pace and steady breathing. From the top, the views are expansive—Jomolhari and Jichu Drake behind you, with Tserim Kang ahead—making the effort worthwhile. Wildlife sightings are possible, including blue sheep, and occasionally takin in the broader region. After the pass, follow a high ridgeline before descending into the Jaje Chhu valley, where the valley narrows and the scenery becomes more dramatic. Camp at Chha She Thang, facing the village of Lingzhi (Lingshi). If time and conditions allow, view Lingshi Dzong from below, a historic fortress-monastery with an important defensive past.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7

Shodu

Distance: 22km | Duration: 8–9 hrs. | Camp Altitude: 4080 M. Begin the Lingshi to Shodu section of the Bhutan Jomolhari trek after breakfast, passing through the scenic Mo Chhu Valley. The trail transitions from the last stands of birch at the tree line into open alpine terrain. Walking at a steady small-group pace with your expert guide, follow the course of the Mochu, passing yak herder camps, wide meadows and the notable waypoint of Dolam Kencho, which offers a peaceful and scenic spot along the route. The day’s main climb is to Yaklela pass (4,942m), reached by a gradual ascent broken by well-timed rests and hydration stops. From the pass, take in a superb panorama of Mount Jomolhari, Jomolhari 2, Jichu Drakey, and Tsheringmeigang—a defining moment of this trek. Begin the long descent through rocky ground and scree slopes, descending through rhododendron, juniper, and pine forests into the valley below. Arrive at camp in Shodu, set close to the river and sheltered by the valley, where the crew prepares a warm meal and a well-earned rest.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8

Thimphu

Trekking: 16KMS | Time: 5–6 hours | Overnight: Hotel in Thimphu. The final day of the trek section of this tour covers the scenic route from Shodu to Barshong, following the Thimphu Chhu River. The trail winds through rhododendron forest, with waterfalls and mossy rocks creating a cooler, greener feel after the alpine zone. Begin by traversing the valley floor, which helps build stamina and confidence before the path climbs onto slopes above the river, offering changing views and frequent photo stops managed smoothly by your guide. Continue to the ruins of Barshong Dzong, marking the end of the Jomolhari Trek and a fitting final viewpoint on the trail. From Barshong, meet your pick-up vehicle for the transfer to Thimphu; the road can be bumpy, but the logistics are organised to keep the group comfortable and moving safely. Arrive in Thimphu, check in to your hotel, and enjoy a hot shower and a relaxed evening after several nights of camping.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 9

Thimphu

After the trek, enjoy a cultural day in Thimphu, guided at an easy pace with time to reset and explore. Start at Zorig Chosum, where students train in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts and crafts—an excellent opportunity for photographs and an authentic look at skills still practised today. Drive up to the Buddha Dordenma for open views over the capital and surrounding hills, then continue to Gagyel Lhundrup Weaving Centre to learn how Bhutanese textiles are created, including distinctive patterns and colour combinations. If the centre is closed, your guide will substitute an equivalent craft visit. Later, visit the Memorial Chorten, a living place of devotion where locals circumambulate, spin prayer wheels, and offer butter lamps. Evening is free for a relaxed dinner and a well-paced recovery day.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 10

Punakha

Drive 75 km/3hrs. Depart Thimphu after breakfast and drive across Dochu-la mountain pass (3,088m/10,130ft), framed by 108 chortens and fluttering prayer flags. On a clear day, pause for photographs of the eastern Himalayan peaks before descending into the warmer Punakha river valley, known for its scenic river valleys, rice fields and pleasant winter climate. Continue down to Lobeysa/Mitsina, then take a gentle 30–40-minute walk through villages and paddy fields to Chhimi Lhakhang, dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley (the “Divine Madman”). Later, visit Sangchen Dorji Lhendrup Nunnery, set on a ridge with wide views and home to a large bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara. Your expert guide provides context on monastic life and the nuns'’ study and craft training. After your trek, enjoy the convenient drive to Thimphu, marking the transition from the remote trekking areas back to the city. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a restful evening.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 11

Punakha

This morning, drive a short distance then begin the walk to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal, reached via a suspension bridge and a steady uphill trail of around 30 minutes. Built to promote protection, peace and harmony, the chorten is an excellent viewpoint over the valley and a quiet place for reflection, with your guide explaining its symbolism and purpose. Return to Punakha and visit Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 as a major religious and administrative centre. Explore courtyards and temple spaces while learning how the dzong has been restored after fires and an earthquake. Later, cross the Punakha Suspension Bridge, stretching more than 160 metres and linking the dzong area with nearby villages. The bridge offers striking river views and a touch of adventure, especially when the wind picks up. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 12

Paro

Drive 130km/ 4 hrs. Travel back to Paro this morning, crossing Dochula pass once more before descending into the broad Paro Valley. On arrival, check in to your hotel, then after lunch drive to the National Museum, housed in the historic ta dzong (watchtower) above Paro Dzong. The round building’s collections—art, artefacts, weapons, coins, stamps and natural history—provide a strong final overview of Bhutan’s culture and story. Continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest shrines, with twin temples built in the 7th century and later expanded in 1968 in the same style. In the evening, visit a traditional farmhouse for an informal, respectful glimpse of local life and hospitality, with time to ask questions and learn about daily routines. Return to the hotel for a relaxed final night.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 13

Paro

After breakfast, your guide coordinates the small-group transfer to Paro airport for your departure flight. Check-in formalities are supported, and timings are managed to keep the morning straightforward. As you leave Bhutan, the journey brings together high passes, remote valleys, camping nights on the Jomolhari trail, and the cultural heart of Thimphu and Punakha—shared in the company of new friends and guided with care. If you are continuing travel plans beyond Bhutan, ask your guide for practical advice on connections and onward arrangements. Safe travels, and we hope you return to this Himalayan kingdom for another adventure.

Meals Included: Breakfast

The story

We designed this Bhutan trek to reveal the country’s unmatched natural beauty and cultural heritage through a truly immersive Himalayan journey. Set in the Bhutanese Himalaya, the route combines remote mountain scenery with living traditions, offering a rare sense of place in one of Asia’s most pristine landscapes.

At its heart is sacred Mt Jomolhari, whose dramatic presence shapes both the skyline and Bhutanese spiritual identity. The trail links high-altitude lakes, open alpine meadows and yak pastures, with panoramic viewpoints and quiet encounters with yak herders who still work these uplands. Each day is paced to enjoy the landscape, photography and acclimatisation.

We also chose this route because it traverses Jigme Dorji National Park, Bhutan’s largest protected area, rich in forests, rivers and Himalayan wildlife. Carefully selected campsites, from tranquil lakeshores to traditional herder grounds, highlight conservation in action. Ending in Thimphu adds a cultural dimension, balancing wilderness trekking with insight into Bhutan’s heritage and modern life.
