Sacred Valleys of Bhutan Explorer

Paro to Paro - 12 Days

Expedition Overview

In Bhutan, a journey of serenity and magic awaits, starting in the historic town of Paro. Here you’ll get to experience Bhutan’s cultural fabric at the National Museum and the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, set against the backdrop of Bhutan's breathtaking landscape, setting the tone for a journey of history and spirituality. Guided by the country’s unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness, every moment is shaped by a focus on wellbeing and cultural preservation, making travel here truly distinctive. As you travel through this remarkable country to Bumthang, the cultural heartland, experiences blend Bhutanese cheese and beer with ancient fortresses and panoramic views, immersing you in Bhutan’s nature and culture. Travelers should be aware of altitude sickness when visiting high-altitude regions like Paro and Bumthang, and gradual acclimatization is recommended to ensure a comfortable journey.

The journey continues through the valleys of Gangtey and the dzongs of Punakha, a mosaic of experiences from serene hikes in Phobjikha Valley, home to the black-necked cranes, to the architectural wonders that have stood the test of time. Every step of the journey, culminating in the trek to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, reveals the spirit and beauty of the Land of the Thunder Dragon, where Buddhism deeply influences daily life and traditions. Here, Bhutan’s unique customs and natural wonders invite you into a world where tradition and nature come together in an unforgettable experience.

Highlights

PUNAKHA ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS: See the grandeur of Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s riverside palace, where two rivers meet under the white walls. This iconic site attracts many tourists with its rich history and stunning architecture. Then to Chimi Lhakang, famous for fertility blessings and a picnic by the river with a traditional archery session for a taste of real Bhutan.

PHOBJIKHA VALLEY EXPLORATION: Get lost in the untouched beauty of Phobjikha Valley, winter home of the black-necked cranes. Popular among tourists seeking authentic experiences, you can visit the Gangtey Monastery and Crane Centre then hike across misty marshlands, quiet paths, traditional farmhouses and big views of Bhutan’s harmony with nature and the seasons.

TAKTSANG PALPHUG MONASTERY: Trek to the famous Tiger’s Nest, perched on a cliff above Paro Valley. As one of Bhutan’s most spectacular sights, this sacred site reveals Bhutan's soul through ancient artifacts and beautiful murals, with stunning views and a deep sense of devotion that is the essence of the kingdom and the Himalayas.

BUMTHANG CULTURAL HEART: Visit Bumthang, the spiritual heart of Bhutan, where monasteries meet alpine landscapes. Go to Fritz Maurer’s Swiss Farm for a unique Bhutanese-Swiss experience, then into Tang Valley for peaceful landscapes, temples and a countryside picnic full of culture and calm.

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Paro

Upon arrival in Paro, a charming town in Bhutan, a private car will pick you up and drop you at your hotel for some rest. It is recommended to take it easy on your first day to help your body acclimatize and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. In the afternoon, start your exploration by visiting the National Museum, a cultural treasure housed in a unique fortress. Here you’ll get to experience Bhutanese culture and art, and learn about Bhutan's history. Next, visit the Drukgyel Dzong ruins, a UNESCO site symbolizing Bhutan’s victory over the Tibetans, showcasing Bhutan's history and resilience. Travelers may also look forward to visiting Tashichho Dzong, a historic fortress monastery in Thimphu known for its temples, shrines, and significance as a cultural and religious landmark.

DAY 2

Bumthang

Fly to Bumthang, a region steeped in history and royalty. Experience Swiss and Bhutanese culture at Fritz Maurer’s Swiss Farm, the only producer of Bhutan's cheese and Red Panda beer. Taste honey, cheese, jam and fresh beer amidst stunning scenery. Later stroll around the town and visit the iconic Jakar Dzong, one of the region’s impressive ruins, with panoramic views of the Choekor Valley.

DAY 3

Bumthang

Early morning excursion to the serene Tang Valley with farmhouses and forested mountains. Visit the mystical Burning Lake in the river gorge, a sacred site where local traditions include ceremonies to honor Mother Earth. Explore Pemacholing Nunnery, a monastic school for nuns of all ages. Hike along the river and have a peaceful picnic lunch. Visit the historic Ogyen Chholing manor, now a museum preserving Bhutan's heritage that attracts visitors interested in Bhutanese culture and history. Evening at the lodge, perhaps a spa treatment.

DAY 4

Bumthang

Today’s adventure takes you to the beautiful Ura Valley, Bhutan’s highest valley with lush meadows and terraced fields spread across the valley floor. Wander around the valley and see locals in traditional dress. Picnic lunch and then downhill bicycle ride to town. Visit Bumthang’s famous yathra handicraft, a handwoven woollen textile at a local cooperative, often coloured with natural dyes and representing Bhutan's traditional crafts. Bike along the tranquil trails and explore more of Bumthang.

DAY 5

Gangtey

Drive to Gangtey (5 hours) through Bhutan's scenic landscapes. En route visit Trongsa, a historic city, and the majestic Trongsa Dzong. Visit the Trongsa Museum of Bhutan's Monarchy, where guided tours are available for those interested in a century of royal history. Upon arrival in Gangtey, check into your luxury lodge and relax.

DAY 6

Gangtey

Explore the serene Phobjikha Valley in Gangtey, a fertile valley known for its rich soil and agricultural productivity, home to the black-necked cranes and a prime example of Bhutan's wildlife. In winter visit the Crane Centre to learn about these auspicious birds. Visit the ancient Gangtey Monastery, an architectural wonder with valley views. Hike through the valley, a unique marshland and open terrain, where you can also observe agricultural terraces that play a vital role in local farming, away from the crowds.

DAY 7

Punakha

Drive to Punakha, Bhutan’s former capital, famous for Bhutan's riverside palace, the majestic dzong at the confluence of two rivers. After admiring this architectural wonder, hike to Chimi Lhakang, crossing paddy fields. This unique temple associated with fertility was built by the revered saint known as the divine madman, a yogi with legends of a flaming thunderbolt and a dog demon, reflecting Bhutan's traditions.

DAY 8

Punakha

Start the day with a scenic hike to Khamsum Yuley Monastery, a beautiful structure that took ten years to complete. Enjoy a peaceful picnic lunch by the river, surrounded by the beauty of the Punakha Valley. In the afternoon, try your hand at archery, Bhutan’s national sport. Then take on an exciting river rafting experience—routes range from calm to adventurous, set against a backdrop of rice paddies, forests, and mountains. This day offers a perfect mix of culture, sport, and nature, and introduces you to Bhutan's vibrant spirit and Bhutan's stunning natural landscapes.

DAY 9

Thimphu

Drive from Punakha to Thimphu, stopping at the scenic Dochula Pass for tea and views of the eastern Himalayas. Here, 108 chortens (stupas) commemorate Bhutanese soldiers. Continue to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital—a charming city with no traffic lights, lively markets, and deep-rooted Bhutan's traditions. Visit the impressive Tashichho Dzong, Bhutan's main government building and monastery. At the post office, create a personalised stamp as a fun and unique souvenir. This day blends natural beauty with cultural insight, giving you a wonderful introduction to the unique rhythm of life in Bhutan's most important city.

DAY 10

Thimphu

Spend the day discovering Bhutan’s culture and heritage. Visit the Institute for Zorig Chusum (traditional arts school), the National Textile Museum, and the Institute of Traditional Medicine. Stop at the Motithang Takin Preserve to see the takin, Bhutan’s rare and beloved national animal. For a deeper understanding of the country’s customs and values, enjoy tea or lunch with a Bhutanese ethno-historian. This personal encounter offers thoughtful conversation and insight into Bhutan's identity, from Bhutan's spiritual beliefs to its modern-day philosophy of Gross National Happiness.

DAY 11

Paro

Return to Paro for the highlight of your Bhutan journey: a guided hike to Bhutan's most iconic monastery, Taktsang Monastery, famously known as Tiger’s Nest. Clinging to a cliff 3,000 feet above the valley, this sacred site is both spiritually and visually breathtaking. The trail winds through pine forests and along prayer-flag-lined paths, offering stunning views. Explore the monastery’s relics and murals, then descend and relax at your lodge. Unwind with a traditional hot stone bath to soothe tired muscles. This day is a meaningful conclusion to Bhutan's spiritual journey, combining spiritual reflection with physical achievement and natural beauty.

DAY 12

PARO - DEPARTURE

On your final day in Bhutan, enjoy a quiet morning walk in the crisp mountain air and savour a cup of butter tea. Reflect on your journey through Bhutan’s valleys, monasteries, and mountain passes. When ready, your private driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your departure. Leave with lasting memories of Bhutan's unique culture, peaceful landscapes, and Bhutan's warm hospitality.
