Best things to do in Thimphu

Thimphu, Bhutan's capital city, is a unique blend of traditional and modern architecture, rich cultural heritage, and stunning natural scenery. Tashichho Dzong, a fortress and monastery, is a famous religious and cultural site that serves as the administrative headquarters of Bhutan. Despite being a modern city, Thimphu has retained its Bhutanese charm with traditional handicraft markets, museums, art galleries showcasing local art and culture, and a variety of restaurants. Visitors can also enjoy scenic hikes, adventure-filled cycling routes, and explore the grand Thimphu Dzong, which houses the throne room of the King. One of the highlights is the General Post Office, where visitors can commission personalised stamps.

EXPERIENCES

A range of thrilling experiences handpicked by our experts. Don’t see one that’s just right for you? No problem. Our local insiders will create precisely what you want.

Tashichho Dzong

Tashichho Dzong, also known as Thimphu Dzong, is a fortress and monastery situated on the banks of the Wang Chhu River. The Dzong serves as the seat of the government and houses the throne room and offices of the King. The annual Thimphu Tsechu, a vibrant religious festival, is held in the courtyard of the Dzong and showcases traditional masked dances and rituals.

National Memorial

The National Memorial Chorten, a prominent landmark in Thimphu, was built in memory of the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. This Tibetan-style stupa is an important place of worship for Bhutanese people, who circumambulate it while reciting prayers and spinning prayer wheels. The chorten features intricate wood carvings, statues, and colorful murals depicting Buddhist deities and teachings.

Archery

Archery is Bhutan's national sport, and visitors to Thimphu can witness this traditional sport at various locations around the city. There are also opportunities for visitors to try their hand at archery themselves, under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Painting School

The National Institute for Zorig Chusum, also known as the Painting School, is dedicated to preserving and promoting Bhutan's traditional arts and crafts. The institute offers courses in the 13 traditional arts, including painting, wood carving, embroidery, and sculpture. Visitors can observe students honing their skills and purchase handcrafted souvenirs.

Folk Heritage Museum

The Folk Heritage Museum, housed in a traditional 19th-century farmhouse, offers a glimpse into the rural life and culture of Bhutan. The museum showcases traditional household items, farming tools, and textiles, providing insights into the daily lives of Bhutanese people. The museum also hosts cultural performances and offers traditional Bhutanese meals for visitors to enjoy.

Hiking and Trekking

The Buddha Dordenma, a 169-foot (51.5-meter) tall bronze statue of Buddha, is perched on a hill overlooking Thimphu. The statue is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world and houses 125,000 smaller Buddha statues inside. The hike to the statue offers panoramic views of Thimphu city and the surrounding valley.
