Group Tour
Paro to Paro – 10 Days
Bhutan Mountain Cycling Adventure is a small-group ride for confident leisure cyclists who want big scenery with cultural depth. From Paro’s dramatic arrival and quiet valley lanes, you warm up with controlled descents to Haa and riverside routes to Thimphu, supported by a vehicle and led by Asian Geographical expert guides who manage pacing, road safety and daily logistics.
The journey continues over Dochula’s chortens into Gangtey’s high glacial bowl, where gentle loops pass farmhouses and crane wetlands in season. Drop into Punakha’s warmer terraces for easy riding beside the Pho Chhu, plus temples, dzongs and viewpoints, then return to Paro for the National Museum, farmhouse hospitality and the Tiger’s Nest hike. Expect varied road surfaces, steady day lengths, flexible lift-outs, comfortable hotels, and ample time for photographs, cafés and local interaction. All riding is tailored to the group’s ability.
BHUTAN CYCLING TOUR
Start with one of Bhutan’s most thrilling rides: a long downhill from Chelela Pass (3,988 m) into Haa Valley, sweeping through alpine forest and meadows. Temple visits at Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo add cultural meaning to the day.
THIMPHU CYCLING EXPERIENCE
Cycle easy roads and riverside lanes in Thimphu, stopping for the Post Office stamp gallery, the Memorial Chorten, and the hilltop Buddha Dordenma. A relaxed ride combining local life, craft browsing and wide valley panoramas.
BHUTAN MOUNTAIN RIDE
Cross Dochu-la with its 108 chortens, ride through Punakha and Wangdue landscapes, then descend from Lawala Pass into Gangtey (Phobjikha) Valley—wide, quiet and beautifully open, with crane habitat in season.
TAKTSANG (TIGER’S NEST) HIKE FINALE
Ride the Pho Chhu River towards Samdingkha Village, passing paddy fields and traditional homes, then explore Punakha Dzong and the suspension bridge. Finish in Paro with the National Museum, a farmhouse visit and the Taktsang hike.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
A small-group cycling journey for confident leisure riders, combining high-pass descents, quiet valley roads and authentic cultural stops. Ride from alpine forests into river valleys and glacial landscapes, supported by a vehicle and expert guides. Enjoy comfortable hotels, flexible lift-outs, and a fitting finale with Paro heritage and the Tiger’s Nest hike.
Fly into Paro on a clear-day approach over the southern ‘duars’, then descend into a narrow valley that opens to rice fields, villages and the river runway. Complete immigration with your Visa Approval Letter and passport, collect baggage, and meet your Asian Geographical expert guide at the exit. Transfer to the hotel and check in. If time allows, take a gentle orientation in the Paro Valley—farmhouses, prayer flags and riverside views—then return for a concise cycling briefing. Your guide and mechanic confirm bike fit, brakes and gearing, and review helmet use, spacing and cornering on descents. Support-vehicle procedures are explained for water, snacks and flexible pick-ups. Evening is free for a short stroll in town after the flight, to adjust to altitude, hydrate and sleep early.
Meals Included: Dinner
Drive from Paro to Chelela Pass (3,988 m) for crisp air and wide Himalayan views. After a safety briefing and final checks, begin an exhilarating 35 km downhill ride into Haa Valley (2,700 m), winding through alpine forest, meadow clearings and small villages. Pause at viewpoints draped with prayer flags before rolling into town. Visit Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo, two revered temples, with your guide explaining local stories and etiquette. After lunch in Haa, continue cycling down the Haa River valley towards Chuzom (approximately 60 km / 4–5 hrs.). Expect gentle descents, rolling stretches and frequent photo stops, with the support vehicle close by for water, snacks and optional lift-outs. Rejoin the vehicle at Chuzom, then drive to Thimphu for check-in and a relaxed evening.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Enjoy a relaxed ride through Thimphu, combining easy city cycling with cultural stops. Pedal along smooth roads and riverside lanes past traditional architecture, markets and everyday neighbourhoods, with your guide keeping the route traffic-aware and sociable. Stop at the Post Office to see Bhutan’s distinctive stamp designs and, if you wish, create personalised stamps for postcards (extra charges). Pass the approach roads near Tashichho Dzong for photos. Continue to the Memorial Chorten to observe locals circumambulating, spinning prayer wheels and offering butter lamps. Later, climb gently to the Buddha Dordenma viewpoint for wide views over the capital and surrounding hills. Time remains for cafés, craft shops or a short walk along the main street before returning to the hotel. Your support vehicle remains available if anyone prefers to shorten the ride.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Drive 130 km/5hrs. Cross Dochu-la mountain pass (3,088m/10,130ft) after breakfast, pausing by the 108 stupas and prayer flags for clear-day Himalayan views. From Dochula, begin a 45 km ride towards Wangdue Phodrang Bridge (about 2–3 hrs.), descending gently through Punakha and Wangdue valleys past rice terraces, villages and river bends. Regroup at the bridge, then continue by vehicle to Gangtey. Later, start again from Lawala Pass (3,360 m) and enjoy a 35 km descent into the Gangtey (Phobjikha) Valley (2,900 m) through pine and fir forests and open meadows. Your guide manages spacing and cornering on faster sections, while the support vehicle carries extra layers and water. Arrive in the valley, take a brief village and viewpoint stop, then settle in at your lodge.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Start with Gangtey Monastery, a 17th-century complex overlooking the Phobjikha Valley, and learn how it anchors local spiritual life. Then cycle a gentle 25–30 km loop on mostly flat to rolling lanes, passing black-roofed farmhouses, terraced fields and pine forest edges. The pace is unhurried, with time for photographs, tea stops and short chats with villagers. Visit the Black-necked Crane Information Centre to understand the wetland habitat and why Gangtey hosts most wintering cranes; outside the season, the exhibits still explain the valley’s ecology and conservation work. In season, scan the marshes for cranes. Your guide keeps the route flexible—ride more if energy is high, or return early for rest and valley views from the lodge. Evening is free for a quiet walk and warm dinner.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Drive 84km/ 3hrs. After breakfast, drive from Gangtey to Punakha, dropping from cool highlands into a warmer valley of rice terraces and riverside villages. Punakha, Bhutan’s former capital, feels greener and more open at lower altitude. Continue to Lobeysa/Mitsina and walk 30–40 minutes through paddy fields and village lanes to Chhimi Lhakhang, dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley (the “Divine Madman”). Your guide shares the temple’s stories, local etiquette and why pilgrims still come for blessings. Later, visit Sangchen Dorji Lhendrup Nunnery, perched on a ridge with wide views over Punakha and Wangdue valleys. See the 14-ft bronze Avalokiteshvara statue and learn how the nuns combine study, meditation and crafts such as embroidery and tailoring. Support is on hand and timings stay unhurried. Check in and enjoy a quiet evening to rest in the subtropical air.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Begin with a short drive and a steady walk to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal, crossing a suspension bridge before climbing to the chorten above the valley. Built to promote protection, peace and harmony, it rewards the effort with panoramic Punakha views. Return to town for Punakha Dzong, founded in 1637 at the rivers’ confluence and carefully restored after fire and earthquake. Explore its courtyards, temples and riverside vantage points with your guide. Next, cross the Punakha Suspension Bridge, fluttering with prayer flags high above the water. Later, cycle from the bridge along the Pho Chhu River towards Samdingkha Village on gentle slopes and flat lanes past paddy fields and traditional houses. Pause for photos, a picnic or tea, then ride back to Khuruthang on the same scenic route. Evening at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Drive 130km/ 5 hrs. Travel back towards Paro with a full, scenic riding day. Start from Dochula Pass (3,100m), framed by the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens and, on clear days, distant Himalayan peaks. Descend on winding roads through rhododendron, hemlock and oak forest, then continue on gentler slopes through villages, terraced fields and river valleys as you approach Paro. Your expert guide manages spacing and safe cornering, while the support vehicle carries water, snacks and optional lift-outs. Arrive in Paro and check in, then after lunch visit the National Museum in the Ta-dzong watchtower above Paro Dzong, with galleries of Bhutanese art and artefacts. In the evening, visit a traditional farmhouse to meet a local family and learn about routines over tea. A bike check is arranged before dinner, and time permitting you can browse Paro’s craft shops.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Total Hike Time 4-5 hrs. This morning, hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), Bhutan’s most iconic sanctuary, perched dramatically on a cliff above the Paro Valley. The trail climbs steadily through pine forest, with regular pauses for water, photographs and a comfortable small-group pace. Your guide shares the story of Guru Rinpoche, believed to have arrived on the back of a tigress and meditated here, giving the site its spiritual weight. Spend time exploring the restored complex and take in wide views across the valley before descending. After lunch, the afternoon is free to recover and explore Paro’s craft market, handicraft shops and cafés at your own rhythm. Those who prefer can opt for a gentle riverside walk or simply rest at the hotel. In the evening, your guide confirms tomorrow’s departure timings and luggage plan.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Transfer to Paro airport for your onward flight. Your guide assists with timings, check-in and luggage, keeping the small-group departure smooth and unhurried. Leave Bhutan with memories of high passes, valley roads, warm village encounters and the quiet achievement of cycling through the Himalaya.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Bhutan Mountain Cycling Adventure was inspired by our belief that the best journeys are earned on the road, not observed through a windscreen. After our CEO’s Trans-Himalayan Expedition across remote passes and far-off valleys, we wanted a Bhutan experience that carries the same spirit of movement, challenge and discovery, but in a form more people can enjoy.
Cycling lets you feel Bhutan’s gradients, scents and weather: the cool air at Chelela, forested descents, river valleys, and the shift into Punakha’s warmer terraces. You arrive in villages at human speed, with time to stop, talk, and notice the small details that make the country distinctive.
We shaped the route for a small group, led by expert guides and supported by a vehicle, so the riding stays safe, flexible and well paced. Temples, dzongs and the Tiger’s Nest hike complete the story—adventure first, with real cultural depth.
TRIP DESIGN, PACE & RIDING LEVEL: A 10-day small-group road-cycling journey for confident leisure riders, built around Bhutan’s quiet mountain highways, high-pass descents and valley lanes, with cultural visits woven between rides. Cycling is on paved mountain roads with long descents, rolling sections and gentle climbs; surfaces can vary and weather can change quickly. You should be comfortable riding in a group and braking confidently on downhills, while the overall pace remains controlled and sensible.
GUIDES, SUPPORT VEHICLE & ON-ROAD SAFETY: Operated with Asian Geographical’s expert cycling guides and a support vehicle to keep the riding flexible and well managed. Daily route briefings, traffic-aware riding, regular bike checks, and access to water/snacks are integral to the operating standard. Optional lift-outs are available, enabling riders to manage fatigue, weather or road conditions without compromising the journey.
ACCOMMODATION & DAILY RHYTHM: Nights are spent in comfortable hotels, with a cadence that mixes riding with cafés, viewpoints and short walks, so the experience is not “all day in the saddle”. Evenings are deliberately unhurried—time to recover, dine well and enjoy the destination. The programme culminates in Paro heritage, with the option to include the Tiger’s Nest hike depending on the final schedule.
WEATHER, ROAD CONDITIONS & CULTURAL ETIQUETTE: Bhutan’s mountain weather can shift quickly, affecting visibility, road feel and timings; the operating approach prioritises safety and enjoyment over rigid schedules. Temple and monastery visits are part of the cultural fabric of the route; appropriate dress and behaviour are expected, with guidance provided discreetly by your guide on the day.
COMMERCIAL TERMS: PRICING, PAYMENTS, CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS: Pricing reflects a supported cycling operation in Bhutan—expert guiding, support vehicle logistics, accommodation and the on-the-ground operating framework. Availability is shaped by seasonal demand and hotel inventory; once confirmed, amendments can be limited and may incur supplier costs. Deposit, balance deadlines, and cancellation terms (including any non-refundable elements) are provided clearly in writing at the time of booking.
