Paro to Paro – 7 Days
Wonders of Bhutan is a small-group tour offering an introduction to the Kingdom that blends cultural depth with light, rewarding activity. The week unfolds from gentle city exploration to warmer valley landscapes, with expert guiding adding context to what you see—rituals, architecture, daily life and the values that shape modern Bhutan. Expect a steady pace, time to pause, and space for genuine encounters rather than rushed box-ticking.
As the journey progresses, short walks and viewpoint stops are balanced with comfortable hotel stays and relaxed evenings. You’ll learn how dzongs, chortens and monasteries function as living centres of community, while markets and village lanes reveal the everyday rhythm of Bhutanese life. The finale is an iconic cliffside hike that feels purposeful and achievable, leaving you with both a sense of adventure and a calm, reflective finish.
THIMPHU CULTURE TOUR
Settle into Bhutan’s capital with time to stroll the main streets, then visit the hilltop Buddha Dordenma for panoramic valley views. Explore the Memorial Chorten, browse the Centenary Farmers Market, and, time permitting, see Trashicho Dzong and its evening ceremony.
DOCHU LA PASS SCENIC DRIVE
Cross Dochu La Pass (3,050m) with 108 stupas and clear-day Himalayan panoramas, then descend into Punakha’s warmer terraces. Visit Punakha Dzong at the rivers’ confluence and walk the Punakha Suspension Bridge draped in prayer flags.
PUNAKHA VALLEY TEMPLE WALKS
Hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten for symbolic architecture and wide views. Continue to Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery and the village path to Chhimi Lhakhang, revealing Bhutan’s living spiritual traditions beyond the headline sites.
PARO VALLEY HERITAGE TOUR
Return to Paro for the National Museum in the Ta-dzong watchtower and the ancient Kichu Lhakang. The journey culminates with the 4–5 hour Tiger’s Nest hike, a rewarding ascent to Bhutan’s most iconic cliffside monastery.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
A well-paced small-group introduction to Bhutan, linking Thimphu, Punakha and Paro with high-pass scenery, valley walks, temples and dzongs. Enjoy comfortable hotels, expert guiding and a gentle cultural rhythm, ending with the iconic Tiger’s Nest hike above the Paro Valley.
Transfer to Thimphu. Drive 54km/1 hr. Your journey begins with a spectacular mountain flight to Paro, with views of Everest, Kanchenjunga and Makalu, and Bhutan’s own sacred peaks on the final approach. After airport formalities, meet your Asian Geographical expert guide and drive to Thimphu (1 hr/54 km), Bhutan’s modern capital where tradition and daily life sit side by side. Check in and take time to settle and acclimatise. If energy permits, visit the Buddha Dordenma, a vast hilltop statue overlooking Thimphu, with unobstructed valley views. Your guide will outline the small-group programme, and answer any questions you may have.
Meals Included: Dinner
Thimphu is Bhutan’s seat of government and an unusually liveable capital, home to the royal family, civil service and foreign missions. Begin with the National Memorial Chorten, where locals gather to pray, spin prayer wheels and circle the shrine. Continue to the Takin Zoo to see Bhutan’s national animal and hear the story behind its return to a protected enclosure (closed Monday). Browse the Centenary Farmers Market for seasonal produce, spices and simple street snacks, with time for photographs and people-watching. Later, visit Trashicho Dzong, the fortress that houses key government offices and the summer residence of the central monastic body; on weekdays you may catch the flag hoisting and guard routine. Your guide shares context without overloading the day. Finish with an easy evening walk along Thimphu’s main street and time to choose dinner.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Drive: 76km/ 3 hr. Drive from Thimphu to Punakha over Dochu La Pass (3,050 m), marked by 108 stupas built by the Queen Mother. On clear days, pause for wide Himalayan views and prayer flags snapping in the wind. Descend into Punakha’s subtropical valley, warmer and greener than the capital, with rice fields and riverside villages. Punakha served as Bhutan’s capital until 1955. Visit Punakha Dzong, positioned at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers and restored after fires and an earthquake. Walk its courtyards and riverside viewpoints with your guide’s context. Later, cross the Punakha Suspension Bridge, draped with prayer flags and gently swaying above the water—a fine spot for birdlife and photography. Arrive mid-afternoon and settle into the valley pace. After check-in, enjoy time to wander the riverbank or simply rest.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Explore Punakha’s valley landscapes and living religious culture. Start with the hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, reached via a riverside trail and a short climb above the valley floor. Built as a spiritual protection monument rather than a community temple, it rewards the walk with sweeping views across terraces and the river bends below. Continue to Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, set on a ridge above Wolakha, home to a friendly community of nuns and a meditation centre. Learn how study is paired with practical skills such as embroidery and tailoring. Later, walk through villages and paddy fields to Chhimi Lhakhang, dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, the ‘Divine Madman’, and still visited by pilgrims seeking blessings. The afternoon remains free for the pool, a riverside walk, or quiet time with a book.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Drive: 130km/ 4 hr. After breakfast, drive back to Paro, crossing Dochu La once more for a final high-pass panorama if skies are clear. Paro’s fertile valley is one of Bhutan’s cultural heartlands, with terraced red-rice fields, old temples and the country’s only airport. Check in, then explore with your guide. Visit the National Museum of Bhutan in the Ta-dzong watchtower above Paro Dzong, with galleries of art, artefacts, weapons and textiles that frame Bhutan’s story. Continue to Kichu Lhakang, a revered 7th-century temple linked to the early spread of Buddhism. If time permits, drive through the valley for views of farmhouses and fields, and listen for the river below. Finish with a relaxed pause for tea. Evening is at leisure in Paro town—craft shops, cafés and an easy walk—or early rest ahead of tomorrow’s hike.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Tiger’s Nest Hike (Total hike time 4-5 hrs.) This morning, hike to Taktsang Monastery, Bhutan’s iconic ‘Tiger’s Nest’, clinging to a cliff 900 m above the valley. Walk at a steady small-group pace, taking breaks for water, photographs and forested views. Your guide shares the story of Guru Rinpoche, believed to have flown here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave. The principal temple dates from 1692 and the complex was carefully restored after the 1998 fire. The climb is steady, and the steps reward the effort with wide viewpoints. Time is allowed at outlooks and, if you wish, a tea stop before the final approach. Explore courtyards, chapels and lookout points, then descend to Paro. Late afternoon is free for a gentle stroll along the main street or last-minute shopping. Your guide reconfirms departure timing and luggage plans.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward flight. Your guide assists with timings, check-in and luggage to keep the small-group departure smooth and unhurried.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This Wonders of Bhutan tour was created for travellers who want a first journey that feels authentic, not rushed—an itinerary that reveals Bhutan’s character through its valleys, rituals and everyday encounters. After our CEO’s Trans-Himalayan Expedition across remote passes and far-off places, we wanted a Bhutan route that carries the same spirit of discovery, but in a comfortable, well-paced format.
Rather than chasing long checklists, we chose the country’s defining corridor—Thimphu, Punakha and Paro—linking viewpoints, markets, monasteries and village paths so the story unfolds naturally. The aim is to experience Bhutan at human speed, with time to observe, photograph and reflect.
The “adventure” is purposeful and achievable: high-pass drives, gentle valley walks, and the Tiger’s Nest hike as a rewarding finale. Travel in a small group, led by expert guides, with careful logistics and thoughtful pacing throughout.
Travel in a small group with Asian Geographical expert guides. Expect clear briefings, smooth logistics and a steady, unhurried pace, with time built in for photographs, tea stops and short walks. Most days combine sightseeing with light activity and comfortable hotel stays.
This tour is ideal for first-time Bhutan visitors who want culture with an “active edge”. Walking is generally easy, with occasional village trails and steps at temples. The main physical day is the Tiger’s Nest hike, taken at a controlled pace with regular breaks.
Expect meaningful cultural access rather than rushed box-ticking. You will visit dzongs, chortens, markets and monasteries, with guidance on etiquette, dress and photography. Your guide adds context on Bhutanese life, beliefs and contemporary society without overwhelming the day.
Mountain weather can shift quickly, especially on Dochu La Pass. Road times and timings may vary, and plans can be adjusted for safety, closures or local conditions. A flexible mindset will make the experience smoother and more enjoyable.
