Kathmandu to Lhasa – 10 Days
Tibet’s Sacred Odyssey takes you on an unforgettable journey into one of the world’s most mystical and untouched territories. This is a trip for the most adventurous of travelers, that goes beyond the ordinary and into the spiritual, cultural and natural wonders of Tibet. This journey offers an authentic experience and the chance to discover the real Tibet, with a knowledgeable Tibetan guide providing cultural insights and a deeper understanding of local traditions. From the bustling streets of Kathmandu where the journey begins with the crucial step of getting a Tibet visa to the serene and rarefied air of Lhasa, this tour is a complete immersion into Tibetan life, religion and landscapes.
Go on a spiritual journey through ancient monasteries, vibrant markets and sacred sites that have been the heart of Tibetan Buddhism for centuries. Along the way, you will encounter breathtaking landscapes and travel along scenic routes that showcase Tibet’s majestic mountains, vast plateaus, and pristine lakes. Marvel at the architectural splendour of Potala Palace, relax in the beauty of Yamdrok Lake, and experience the local traditions of Shigatse and Gyantse. Tibet’s Sacred Odyssey is not just a trip but a transformation, that will give you insights into a culture that is largely untouched by the outside world, making it one of the most unforgettable journeys for those seeking a deep connection with Tibet.
NOTE: Tibet is closed to tourists from mid-February to March. We advise to plan your trip after late April when there is enough time for the processing of the necessary Tibetan permits. A Tibet travel permit (also known as a Tibet permit) is required for entry into the Tibet Autonomous Region, and we assist with obtaining these permits.
POTALA PALACE & BARKHOR MARKET: Climb the sacred steps of Potala Palace, the former winter home of the Dalai Lama, offering sweeping views of Lhasa and insight into Tibetan spirituality and politics. Afterwards, dive into the vibrant Barkhor Market, where pilgrims circle Jokhang Temple and stalls overflow with prayer flags and handicrafts—capturing the heart of Tibetan daily life.
DREPUNG & SERA MONASTERIES: Explore Drepung Monastery, once the largest in Tibet, where ancient halls reflect centuries of Buddhist learning. Then head to Sera Monastery to witness the spirited monks’ debate—an essential tradition in Tibetan monastic education. These two monasteries offer deep insight into religious life and the enduring spiritual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
TASHILUMPO MONASTERY, SHIGATSE: Wander the sacred grounds of Tashilumpo Monastery, seat of the Panchen Lama. Admire golden statues, ornate murals, and grand stupas as monks continue their daily rituals. Located in Shigatse, this monastery represents the living heritage of Tibetan Buddhism and is a powerful reminder of its cultural and religious influence.
YAMDROK LAKE & THE PLATEAU: Take in the tranquil beauty of Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s holiest sites. With its deep turquoise waters and surrounding snow-capped peaks, it offers a stunning contrast to the stark Tibetan Plateau. Ideal for quiet reflection, this sacred lake is a highlight of Tibet’s natural and spiritual landscape.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

Kathmandu to Lhasa Luxury Explorer is an 11 day journey into the heart of Tibetan spirituality and culture. Tibet, a land veiled in mystique, offers a journey of a lifetime, particularly for the daring traveller. After securing a Tibet visa in Kathmandu, embark on a nine-day odyssey through Lhasa's historic sites, Gyantse's charm, and Shigatse's spiritual depth, concluding with explorations of Xegar, Zhangmu, and timeless Tibetan villages.
Start your journey to Tibet from Kathmandu, the first step of which is to get your Tibet visa. Kathmandu is the best place to do this as per the Tibet visa regulations. Upon your arrival, let your guide assist you with the visa process. After these formalities, relax at your hotel for the evening. Asian Geographical recommends staying at Dwarika's, a hotel built from the ruins of Nepal's rich architectural heritage, often a choice for dignitaries and celebrities. Make sure to manage your visa on weekdays to avoid any delays caused by holidays.
While your visa is being processed, immerse yourself in the culture of Kathmandu. Start with a walk through the Old Quarter, where you can engage with the street markets or admire the ancient heritage at Durbar Square. End your day with a sunset at the Boudhanath Temple, under the benevolent eyes of the Buddha from the temple's giant dome.
Spend your afternoon exploring Kathmandu further, starting with a visit to the Bhasmeshvar Ghats. Here you will see the rituals where Hindus celebrate the cycle of life and death. Continue your cultural journey to the monasteries around the famous Monkey Temple. Make sure your Tibet visa is ready before returning to your hotel for some well-deserved rest.
After breakfast in Kathmandu, you will be escorted by your guide to the airport for your flight to Lhasa, the heart of Tibet’s unique and isolated culture. The rest of the day is free to acclimatize to the high altitude, so you are well rested and ready for the adventures ahead in this stunning city. Your Tibetan guide will assist you in adjusting to the altitude and introduce you to the local culture, ensuring a smooth and insightful start to your journey.
Get ready for a day of exploration in Lhasa, at an altitude of around 12,000 feet. The day’s itinerary includes the iconic Potala Palace, which served as the winter palace of the Dalai Lama, Jokhang Temple Monastery, home to the revered statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve, and Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama’s former summer residence. All are UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Tibetan religion and politics. Don’t miss the Barkhor Market, a sacred pilgrimage site and a vibrant market.
Continue your exploration of Lhasa with a visit to the 15th century Sera Monastery, where you can witness the famous monks debate—one of the classic experiences of Tibetan culture—and the peaceful Norbulingka Monastery, near the Kyichu River. These are a short drive from Lhasa, so you can return to your hotel for a relaxed dinner and reflect on the day’s spiritual and historical discoveries.
Leave Lhasa for Gyantse, a small agricultural town famous for its wool industry and Buddhist sites. En route, pass by the stunning Yamdrotso Lake, where the turquoise blue waters shine against the mountain backdrop, and travel through areas of dense forests that add to the scenic beauty of the journey. Upon arrival, have free time to explore the local market or relax at your hotel and soak up the town’s tranquillity. You will stay overnight in Gyantse.
Drive to Shigatse, Tibet’s second largest city, with a stop to see the Kumbum Stupa. In Shigatse, visit the Tashilumpo Monastery, a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism, renowned for its gilded burial stupas that honor the Panchen Lamas. These ornate stupas are significant for their architectural beauty and spiritual symbolism. The visit offers a unique insight into Tibetan traditions and monastic life. After exploring this spiritual site and the nearby market, check into your hotel in Shigatse to rest and reflect on the day’s experiences.
Embark on a memorable road trip along the Friendship Highway in a private car, traveling scenic routes that wind through Lhatse and the Gyamtso La pass, where you'll be treated to breathtaking views of snow capped mountains—perfect for photography. The highlight of the day is the Sakya Monastery, a fortress-like complex with a treasure trove of Tibetan manuscripts and artifacts. Return to Shigatse after a day of discovery.
Drive back to Lhasa via the highway, arriving in the late afternoon. Check into your hotel and have the evening to relax, reflect on your journey and prepare for your departure the next day.
Have one last breakfast in Lhasa before checking out of your hotel. Your guide will escort you to the international airport, the end of your Tibet odyssey. As you board your onward flight, take with you the memories and insights from this unique part of the world. The tour ends with your departure from Lhasa.
