Mt Kailash Manasarovar Expedition

Kathmandu to Kathmandu – 14 Days

This 14-day small-group pilgrimage begins and ends in Kathmandu, travelling overland through the Himalaya into Tibet for the sacred twin anchors of Lake Mansarovar and Mt Kailash. After arrival and briefing in Kathmandu, you drive north through mountain valleys to the Nepal–China border and cross into Tibet via the Friendship Bridge, then continue across the wide Tibetan plateau, passing rivers, high passes and remote settlements. Altitude is built progressively, with a dedicated acclimatisation pause in Saga to support comfort and wellbeing before the more intense pilgrimage days begin in earnest.

A defining feature of this departure is its timing: the itinerary is specifically designed to reach the shores of Lake Mansarovar on Friday, 28 August 2026—a full-moon date that coincides with Janai Purnima (Shravan Purnima), considered by many Hindu pilgrims to be exceptionally auspicious for prayer, ritual bathing and intention-setting at the holy lake. From Mansarovar, you continue to Darchen to prepare for the pilgrimage’s heart: the three-day Kailash kora, including the Dolma La crossing, with yaks carrying main provisions and a highly experienced support team managing logistics. Return via Kyirong to Kathmandu for a calm, reflective close.

Highlights

PASHUPATINATH TEMPLE TOUR: Begin with a calm, well-supported start in Kathmandu, combining rest with meaningful orientation. Visit Pashupatinath, Nepal’s most important Hindu temple complex, and Budhanilkantha’s reclining Vishnu—both setting the spiritual tone before you head north. Back at the hotel, a dedicated Kailash briefing covers route logistics, altitude strategy, pacing, what to pack, and how the parikrama days work in practice. It’s the difference between “hoping it goes smoothly” and feeling properly prepared—physically, mentally and spiritually—before the road to Tibet begins.

LAKE MANSAROVAR DARSHAN28 August 2026 Full Moon: The approach to Mansarovar is one of the expedition’s defining moments, and this departure is deliberately timed so you reach the lakeshore on Friday, 28 August 2026—a full-moon day regarded by many Hindu pilgrims as exceptionally auspicious. Crossing Mayum La Pass (5,200m), the landscape opens into the vast Tibetan plateau before the sacred waters appear at Hor Quo. From here, begin the vehicle circumambulation, watching the lake’s colours shift with the light. For many, this is the first “darshan” of Kailash—quiet, powerful, and deeply personal—ending at Chu Gompa for a reflective night by the lake.

MANSAROVAR LAKE PUJA — Ritual Bath: Before the kora begins, spend a morning at Mansarovar for puja and, conditions permitting, a ritual bath in the holy waters—an important act of purification and intention-setting for many pilgrims. In the thin, clear air, the lake’s stillness and the wide horizon create a rare sense of space, heightened further when the previous day’s full-moon timing has brought you to Mansarovar at its most spiritually charged. Your guide manages the practicalities—timing, access and sequence—so you can stay focused on the experience rather than logistics. Afterwards, drive to Darchen to finalise horse/porter arrangements and prepare calmly for the parikrama.

MT KAILASH KORA: The three-day Kailash parikrama is the expedition’s heart. Day one eases you into the rhythm with a steady walk to Dirapuk, where the north face of Kailash feels astonishingly close. Day two is the test: a pre-dawn start and the long ascent to Dolma La Pass (5,800m), followed by a careful descent past Gauri Kunda and on to Zuthulpuk. Day three completes the circuit with a gentler final walk to Chongdo. Yaks carry provisions and the team handles logistics, letting you focus on pacing, breath and meaning.

DAY 1

Kathmandu

22 Aug 26. Arrive in Kathmandu (1,350m) and meet our representative at the airport for your private transfer to the hotel. Once checked in, take time to unwind after your flight—this first day is intentionally gentle to help you settle and adjust. Lunch is served at the hotel, followed by a free afternoon to relax or take an easy walk nearby at your own pace. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely dinner at the hotel and an early night if you wish, ready for tomorrow’s guided visits and expedition briefing.

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

The Soaltee Kathmandu

The Soaltee Kathmandu is a long-established city resort set on spacious grounds in Tahachal, slightly removed from Thamel’s bustle but still within easy reach of Durbar Marg and the historic core. The feel is classic and formal rather than boutique, with broad public areas and a calm, self-contained layout that works well before or after overland travel.

Rooms are comfortable and well-proportioned, typically with garden-facing aspects in the main wings. Expect solid soundproofing, good bedding, and reliable hot water; higher-category rooms offer more space and a quieter, more contemporary finish. Service is efficient in the “big hotel” style, with plenty of staff on hand.

Facilities are a key strength: a large outdoor pool (seasonal), landscaped lawns for a gentle walk, a gym, spa treatments, and several restaurants and bars for easy, no-fuss dining on arrival night. It’s a dependable base for early departures or late returns.

DAY 2

Kathmandu

23 Aug 26. After breakfast, head out with your guide for key Kathmandu Valley sights, starting with sacred Pashupatinath, Nepal’s most important Hindu temple complex on the Bagmati River. Continue to Budhanilkantha, home to the striking reclining Vishnu sculpture, a significant pilgrimage site. Return to the hotel for lunch, then join a comprehensive Kailash briefing session covering the route, altitude strategy, daily logistics, and what to expect during the parikrama (kora). This is also the best time to check kit, layers, and any personal medication. Dinner is served at the hotel, followed by overnight rest.

DAY 3

Syaphrubeshi

24 Aug 26. Leave Kathmandu after breakfast and begin the overland drive to Syaphrubeshi (approx. 1,450m), a small town near Rasuwagadhi, the Nepal–China border area. The journey (around 150 km / 6–7 hours) follows winding mountain roads with changing scenery as you leave the valley behind. A simple lunch is taken en route, with comfort stops as needed. Arrive in Syaphrubeshi by late afternoon and check into a basic guesthouse. The evening is relaxed—dinner, a short walk if you feel like it, and early rest ahead of tomorrow’s border crossing procedures and the first high-altitude night.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:
Resort

Hotel Garden Inn, Syapru Besi

Hotel Garden Inn (Syābru Bensi) is a real, actively traded property in Syabrubesi and is perfectly suitable as a clean, practical overnight for your Mt Kailash overland routing (before the Rasuwagadhi/Kyirong sector).

It presents as a simple, family-run lodge rather than a “hotel” in the Kathmandu sense: compact ensuite rooms (as listed), basic but comfortable bedding, and a small restaurant for straightforward Nepali/continental meals. Booking.com lists it in Syābru Bensi with private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi; travellers tend to use it as a functional stop either side of the trek/border push.

The one caution is that third-party listings sometimes overstate star ratings in remote Nepal (you’ll see “5-star” on OTAs, but expectations should remain mountain-guesthouse level). I’d position it in your itinerary as: “simple mountain lodge; best available in Syabrubesi” and have your ground team confirm hot water reliability and room heating in winter.

DAY 4

Kyirong

25 Aug 26. After breakfast, drive to the Friendship Bridge border point for immigration and customs formalities, then continue into Tibet to Kyirong (approx. 4,130m). Although the driving distance is short (about 45 km / 1.5 hours), border processes can take time, so patience and flexibility are important. Once across, the landscape and air feel noticeably higher and drier—take it easy, hydrate, and move slowly to support acclimatisation. On arrival, check in to your hotel, with lunch served there. The remainder of the day is kept calm for rest and adjustment before dinner and overnight.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Shishapangma Hotel

Shishapangma Hotel (She Sha Bang Ma Hotel) is a straightforward stopover in Gyirong (Kyirong/Keyrong), well placed for travellers crossing between Nepal and Tibet. It’s a practical base in town, close to local shops and simple restaurants, and works best for a one-night pause to rest and reset before the next long driving day.

The style is modern, functional “county-town hotel” rather than boutique: simple public areas, plain corridors, and an emphasis on warmth, hot water and a decent night’s sleep. Expect clean, no-fuss rooms with basic furnishings and a calm, workmanlike feel.

Accommodation is typically offered as double, twin and family rooms, which suits couples, friends travelling together, and small groups. Facilities are limited but useful for transit, with lift access and basic connectivity in public areas. Overall, it’s a dependable, best-available option in Gyirong for this route.

DAY 5

Saga

26 Aug 26. After breakfast, begin the long but spectacular drive across the Tibetan plateau to Saga (approx. 4,500m). Today is about distance and gradual acclimatisation: wide valleys, braided rivers and open horizons replace the tighter border landscapes of Kyirong. The journey is around 375 km and typically takes about 7 hours, with comfort stops as needed. Lunch is taken en route, and your guide will keep the pace sensible—move slowly at rest stops, stay warm, and keep sipping water to help your body adjust. Arrive in Saga by late afternoon, check in to your hotel, and keep the evening simple: dinner, rest and an early night.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Tibet Lunbu Gangri Grand Hotel

Tibet Lunbu Gangri Grand Hotel is a newer, practical stopover in Saga County, well placed for overland journeys towards Ali and Mt Kailash. It sits on Deji Road, making it an easy base for early starts and late arrivals in a town where convenience matters more than views.

The style is contemporary Chinese “grand hotel” rather than boutique: functional public spaces, simple corridors, and rooms designed for comfort and recovery after a long drive. Expect a focus on warmth, reliable hot water, and a straightforward, no-fuss stay.

Accommodation is offered in a mix of double, twin and family rooms, which works well for couples, friends travelling together, and small-group rooming. Overall, it’s a sensible best-available option for Saga on a Kailash itinerary, with an emphasis on rest, practicality, and a smooth overnight stop.

Resort

DAY 6

Saga

27 Aug 26. Today is a rest and acclimatisation day in Saga (4,500m), an essential pause before you continue deeper into the Kailash region. A slower day now improves comfort and safety later—especially for the parikrama days. After breakfast, take the morning gently: short, easy walks around the hotel area are fine, but avoid strenuous effort. Your guide may offer simple breathing and pacing tips, and this is a good time to check boots, layers, and any personal medication. Use the afternoon for hydration, journalling, and quiet rest. Dinner is served at the hotel, with overnight in Saga.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7

Lake Mansarovar

28 Aug 26. Full Moon. After breakfast, drive from Saga towards Lake Mansarovar via Prayang and over Mayum La Pass (5,200m), one of the great high points of the journey. The route crosses classic plateau scenery before descending to Hor Quo (approx. 4,560m). Lunch is served en route. From Hor Quo, begin the vehicle circumambulation of sacred Mansarovar—an unhurried, deeply atmospheric loop with changing perspectives of lake, sky and distant mountains. By day’s end, arrive at Chu Gompa for your first night on the lakeshore. For many, this is the emotional turning point of the expedition—the first glimpse of Mt. Kailash and its sacred waters.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Parmarth Mansarovar Ashram & Clinic

Parmarth Mansarovar Ashram & Clinic is a simple pilgrim lodge in the Kailash–Manasarovar region, created to give travellers a warm indoor base and access to basic medical support in a remote, high-altitude setting. It’s most often used around the traditional pre-Manasarovar staging area (Paryang) and on the lake sector itself.

Accommodation is straightforward and functional, with a mix of small rooms and larger dorm-style arrangements, plus halls used for satsang, meditation and group briefings. Facilities are limited compared with hotels, but the emphasis is on shelter, cleanliness, and a calm atmosphere that suits the spirit of the journey.

The adjoining clinic is charitable and intended for first-response support (think altitude and travel-related niggles rather than a full hospital). For a stop like this, comfort comes from preparedness and good pacing, with the ashram offering simplicity, support, and a strong sense of place.

DAY 8

Darchen

29 Aug 26. This morning, take part in a puja at Lake Mansarovar, with time for a ritual bath if conditions allow—an important spiritual moment for many pilgrims. After lunch, drive to Darchen (approx. 4,620m), the base settlement for the Mt. Kailash parikrama. The drive is short (around 35 km / 1–1.5 hours), but altitude makes it wise to move slowly and keep exertion minimal on arrival. Check in to your hotel and use the afternoon to prepare: confirm whether you want a horse and/or porter for the kora and coordinate arrangements with your guide so everything is organised before you set out.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Himalaya Kailash Hotel, Darchen

Himalaya Kailash Hotel is the principal full-service hotel in Darchen (the trailhead for the Mt Kailash kora), set close to the settlement with quick access to the start point and local services. In a remote, high-altitude town, it’s valued for being straightforward, warm, and well set up for early departures.

Rooms are comfortably sized and decorated in a Tibetan style, with a mix of double, twin and larger configurations used for pilgrimage groups. Travellers typically highlight dependable basics—heating, hot water, and a generally clean, functional feel—rather than boutique design or luxury detailing.

Facilities are practical for a one- or two-night stay, including an on-site restaurant and communal areas suited to group briefings and downtime before/after the kora. Overall, it’s best approached as the strongest “best available” option in Darchen: simple, purposeful, and focused on rest and recovery at altitude.

DAY 9

Dirapuk

30 Aug 26. After breakfast, drive from Darchen towards Yam Dwar (the sacred “Gateway of Yama”), where your yaks and handlers meet the group. Load your main provisions onto the yaks, check daypacks, and begin the first day of the Kailash kora. Today’s walk is a steady, gradual trek of around 16 km (about 5 hours), allowing you to settle into a sustainable rhythm at altitude. Pause at Yam Dwar for prayers and reflection, then continue along the valley with your first clear views of Kailash’s western face. By late afternoon, reach Dirapuk (approx. 4,860m), a simple overnight stop with an unforgettable perspective of the north face in the distance.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:
Resort

New Guest House, Diraphuk

The New Guest House in Diraphuk (Derapuk) is the classic overnight stop on Day 1 of the Mt Kailash kora, set beneath the north face of Kailash at roughly 5,200m. Its location is the headline: step outside and you are close to the best, most direct views of the mountain’s north wall.

Accommodation is very simple and high-altitude functional. Rooms are generally dormitory-style (often shared), with minimal insulation and shared toilets in an outside block. Electricity is limited and there is no Wi-Fi; this is a place to rest, rehydrate, and sleep early rather than linger.

Some newer builds are described as more modern concrete guesthouse rooms (alongside older, basic rooms), but comfort remains modest, with no central heating. Nights are cold, so a proper sleeping bag and warm layers make a big difference.

Resort

DAY 10

Zuthulphuk

31 Aug 26. Today is the most demanding day of the pilgrimage. Start early and begin the long ascent to Dolma La Pass (approx. 5,800m), typically 4–5 hours of climbing at a slow, deliberate pace. At the top, take a brief pause—wind and altitude can be intense—then begin the equally long descent into the valley, another 4–5 hours. En route, pass Gauri Kunda, a revered lake that many pilgrims consider a powerful spiritual waypoint. The full day covers around 22 km and can take up to 10 hours. Mental preparation, layering, hydration and steady pacing matter more than speed. Arrive into Zuthulpuk for dinner and rest.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

New Guest House, Zuthulphuk

The New Guest House in Zuthulphuk (Zutulpuk) is the standard overnight stop at the end of Day 2 of the Mt Kailash kora, close to Zuthulphuk Monastery and Milarepa’s cave. After crossing Dolma La and descending into the valley, it’s valued for one thing: a sheltered bed and a simple meal at the right point on the route.

Accommodation is very basic and dormitory-style, typically with multi-bed rooms and shared facilities. Toilets are usually Tibetan-style squat toilets, normally in a separate block, and heating is minimal or absent—standard for remote, high-altitude trekking nights in this region.

While some listings refer to “new” or improved guesthouses, comfort remains modest: limited electricity, no Wi-Fi, and simple bedding. Treat it as a practical, high-altitude stop focused on rest and recovery before the final day’s walk back towards Darchen.

Resort

DAY 11

Saga

01 Sep 26. After breakfast, complete the final section of the kora with an easier walk of around 10 km (about 3 hours) on a gradual path. This is a reflective morning—many travellers find the last stretch quietly emotional after the intensity of Dolma La. Reach Chongdo, where your vehicle meets the group, marking the practical end of the parikrama. From here, begin the drive back to Saga (approx. 280 km / around 6 hours), crossing open plateau landscapes as you descend slightly in altitude and regain comfort. Arrive by evening, check in, and enjoy a well-earned hot meal and proper rest.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Tibet Lunbu Gangri Grand Hotel

Overall, it’s a sensible best-available option for Saga on a Kailash itinerary, with an emphasis on rest, practicality, and a smooth overnight stop.

DAY 12

Kyerong

02 Sep 26. Following breakfast, begin the return drive from Saga to Kyirong (often around 350 km / 7 hours), retracing the plateau route with comfort stops along the way. After the kora, many travellers feel a mix of relief and quiet satisfaction—today is a good day to rest, hydrate and let the experience settle. Weather and road conditions can affect timings, so keep expectations flexible. If border procedures and timing allow, it may be possible to continue further and cross into Nepal to overnight at Syaphrubeshi, but the standard plan is to reach Kyirong and check in for the night.

DAY 13

Kathmandu

03 Sep 26. After breakfast, drive to the Friendship Bridge at Rasuwagadhi for immigration and customs formalities, then re-enter Nepal and continue to Kathmandu. Border processes can be time-consuming, so patience is essential and lunch timing may shift. Stop in Syaphrubeshi for lunch, then continue by road towards the Kathmandu Valley (journey time typically around 6 hours, conditions depending). Arrive in Kathmandu by evening and check in to your hotel—hot showers, comfortable rooms and a softer pace feel especially welcome after the high plateau. Enjoy a relaxed dinner and time to reflect on the journey.

DAY 14

KATHMANDU - DEPARTURE

04 Sep 26. After breakfast, check out and transfer to Kathmandu Airport for your onward flight. Depending on departure time, you may have a little free time for last-minute shopping or a short café stop, but the day is generally kept simple to ensure a smooth departure. Your team will confirm timing the previous evening and assist with airport logistics. For travellers extending their stay, additional nights, private transfers, or Kathmandu Valley sightseeing can be arranged on request.

The story

Our Mount Kailash Manasarovar Tour was shaped by a simple realisation: few journeys combine spiritual meaning and Himalayan scale as powerfully as the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Travelling from Kathmandu towards remote western Tibet, we felt the stillness of the Tibetan Plateau and understood why holy Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are revered across Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon traditions. This is not only a physical adventure, but a sacred pilgrimage and spiritual journey.

Along the route we met pilgrims, monks and nomads whose devotion is grounded in lived experience. Their stories gave the Mount Kailash yatra its human depth: prayers at monasteries, quiet rituals by the lake, and the shared determination to complete the Kailash Kora, also known as the Mount Kailash Parikrama, including the crossing of Dolma La Pass.

We designed this expedition to honour that faith with careful acclimatisation, expert guidance and respectful support. Responsible travel is central: protecting fragile landscapes, supporting local communities, and ensuring each traveller experiences the divine energy of Mount Kailash in a way that is authentic, safe and meaningful.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, SUPPORT STAFF & TRIP STYLE: This is a 14-day small-group Mt Kailash pilgrimage starting and ending in Kathmandu, travelling overland via Syaphrubeshi and the Rasuwagadhi/Friendship Bridge into Tibet. The journey is expedition-style rather than luxury: long driving days, high altitude, simple facilities in places, and a strong emphasis on pacing and preparation. You are supported by an experienced Tour Leader/guide, driver(s), and a local team on the Tibet side; yaks and handlers carry main provisions on the parikrama. The itinerary includes an acclimatisation rest day in Saga and a three-day Kailash kora; flexibility is essential as border processes, weather and road conditions can affect timings.

ACCOMMODATION, MEAL PLAN, FOOD & WATER: Expect a blend of comfortable hotels in Kathmandu and basic hotels/guesthouses on the Tibet side. Accommodation at Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk is simple and functional, with limited heating and power—this is normal for the region. Rooms are typically twin-share; single rooms cannot be guaranteed in remote guesthouses. Meals are included as stated day-by-day (generally B/L/D) and are simple, warm and carb-forward to support energy at altitude. Drink only sealed bottled water or boiled/purified water provided by the team; dehydration is common at altitude, so keep sipping throughout the day.

ALTITUDE, ACCLIMATISATION, HEALTH & VACCINATIONS: This tour reaches very high altitude: Kyirong and Saga are around 4,100–4,500m, Lake Mansarovar is around 4,540m, Darchen is around 4,620m, and the kora’s high point is Dolma La Pass (5,800m). Altitude can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Walk slowly, hydrate well, keep warm, avoid alcohol, and prioritise sleep—especially in the first high nights. Common symptoms include headache, nausea, poor sleep and reduced appetite; tell your guide early if you feel unwell so pacing can be adjusted. The second kora day is long and demanding; mental preparation matters. If you have heart/lung conditions, severe asthma, or a history of altitude illness, seek medical advice before booking. Carry personal medication in original packaging, and consider discussing altitude medication with a travel clinic.

SPENDING MONEY, CURRENCY & TIPPING: Bring a cash float for personal spending and tips. In Kathmandu, ATMs and card payments are available, but once you travel north, access becomes limited and you should not rely on cards. Carry small denominations for drinks, snacks and incidentals. Tipping is customary and appreciated for drivers, local guides, yak handlers and support staff—your Tour Leader can advise a fair guideline based on group size and local norms. Budget also for optional personal services during the kora, such as hiring a horse and/or porter if you want extra support on the trekking days.

PASSPORTS, VISAS, PERMITS, BAGGAGE, CLIMATE & INSURANCE: You must hold the correct entry documentation for Nepal and China/Tibet. Tibet travel requires specific permits and logistics arranged in advance; you will be advised of the documents and passport scans needed and when to submit them. Pack light in soft-sided luggage (vehicles have limited space) and carry a daypack for the kora; layers are essential—days can be bright and windy, with freezing nights at altitude. Seasonal weather matters: May–June typically brings warmer days and clearer skies, often ideal for trekking and sightseeing. July–August is monsoon season in Nepal, but the Tibetan plateau is generally drier; expect occasional rain on the Nepal side and fewer crowds, with periods of superb clarity. September is cooler with crisp air and excellent visibility, often the best window for photography. Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover high-altitude trekking (up to 5,800m), medical treatment and emergency evacuation. For safety and operations, always follow the guide’s briefings and local regulations at border points and in sensitive regions.
