Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia

The entire space on Song Saa Private Island, is beautifully constructed using natural materials, a high ceiling with an all-encompassing canopy so as to integrate seamlessly into the natural space. At the centre of its architectural design is its creative art by Melita, Rory Hunter’s lovely wife. Her creativity and personal touch can be felt even in our two bedrooms villa, so beautifully designed. The focus is on relaxing the mind; a sunken bath, full-length windows and a small pool.

Song Saa has 27 thatched villas spread over a forest-covered hill, along the water’s edge, and above the water on stilts. All the villas have secluded terraces, private pools, and high-end creature comforts Robinson Crusoe could only fantasize about. There is also a sanctuary where you can shower looking out over the sea, a private veranda to watch the sunsets and yes, should you wish, the resort’s chef can come and treat you to fresh seafood under the stars.

With the increase in tourism to Cambodia, I have often wondered if only there was a place in Cambodia where travellers could finish their trip with an R&R. Before now there has been little in the way of luxury to entice a traveller to stay, moving them to head for another destination to quench their thirst for blue seas and sandy beaches. Now you have Song Saa along with pampering and luxury.

Stay

Song Saa Private Island features 27 luxury pool villas. All the villas are scattered over a forest-covered hill, along the water's edge, and above the water on stilts. They have secluded terraces, private pools, and high-end creature comforts Robinson Crusoe could only fantasize about. There is also a sanctuary where you can shower looking out over the sea, a private veranda to watch the sunsets and yes, should you wish, the resort’s chef can come and treat you to fresh seafood under the stars.

ChildCare

Children are welcome to stay at the Song Saa Private Island. The resort has a room with lots of games and toys for children. Babysitting service is available with prior notice.

Dine

The Song Saa Private Island’s over water Vista restaurant sits just off the island’s shoreline and is a spectacular spot to indulge your senses. Staffed by world-class chefs, the menu will take you across Cambodia. Located on the beach, the Driftwood Bar has 360-degree ocean views with relaxed and rustic feel and offers a pizza and tapas-style menu. Relax by the side of the infinity edge swimming pool with poolside restaurant offering delicious 'Cambodian street-food'.

Relax

Song Saa Private Island offers excellent diving and snorkelling in the marine reserve, and there’s an infinity edge swimming pool and a spa. A good way to build your appetite is to go kayaking in the mangroves. Alternatively, tour the local fruit orchards, and see what is being done to encourage sustainable livelihoods or explore the amazing Five Mile Beach with its beautiful powder white sand.

Experience

The Song Saa Private Island is small, that is the beauty of it, but the nature around is big. We heard that the adjacent Island had been dedicated to wildlife. So, we jumped into a speed boat to see it for ourselves. There are hornbills, sea eagles and an abundance of sea-life, visible from walkways over the water. You can also trek to the nearby fishing village and visit local people.

One More Thing

While we set off for our rooms to rest, Rory, the owner struggles with new ways of making the development of his resort sustainable. In these economic hard times, sustainable development for Rory has not been easy and so wasn’t a bout cancer for Melita but they have done well in sharing their passion with those who have found their way to this little paradise. The Hunters are what the islands are – Song Saa, meaning in the local language, ‘The Sweethearts’.

Location Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia. Located in the unspoilt Koh Rong archipelago, between Sihanoukville and Thailand, there are two small islands which make up Song Saa. Covered with virgin rainforests and tropical reefs, it is mainly un-inhabited. Unlike Thailand which is crowded, Song Saa – the Sweethearts Island rests in perfect silence.

Getting there Both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh Airport have multiple daily services to virtually all Asian gateways. Cambodia Angkor Air operates 3-weekly 50-minute flights from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville. Song Saa Private Island is only 30-minutes by speed boat from the city of Sihanoukville.

When to go Cambodia is hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April. In May and June the southwestern monsoon brings rain that lasts until October but it rarely rains all day. Although, this is a low season for tourism, it has its own advantages. It is when the Angkor complex is at its most beautiful, the vegetation is lush, the moats for full of water and there are less tourists so you can explore the temples in peace.
