Hanoi to Luang Prabang – 18 days
This 18-day Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos tour links three countries in a steady, immersive rhythm: Vietnam’s street life and coastal scenery, Cambodia’s Khmer heritage, and Laos’s riverine calm. Begin in Hanoi with local neighbourhood texture, then cruise through the limestone seascapes of Ha Long Bay before travelling south through imperial Hue, lantern-lit Hoi An and the cosmopolitan layers of Ho Chi Minh City. Along the way, experiences stay grounded in daily life, from markets and street culture to cooking, river journeys and village encounters, balanced by comfortable hotels, expert local guides and smooth internal flights where needed.
Cambodia adds the deeper historical arc of this Indochina journey, from Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and National Museum to a hands-on Khmer cooking class, then on to Siem Reap for Angkor’s great temple complexes. Explore Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei and Angkor Wat with expert guiding, before flying to Luang Prabang for a gentler finale. Here, vintage tuk-tuks, Mekong cruising to Pak Ou Caves, village weaving, a private Baci blessing and the turquoise pools of Kuang Si bring the journey to a calm close. It is a broad sweep of Southeast Asia, thoughtfully paced and rich in culture, scenery and local connection.
HANOI OLD QUARTER TOUR AND HA LONG BAY CRUISE: Begin in Hanoi with an original city micro-adventure, combining electric buggy touring, market browsing, pavement coffee and backstreet walks that reveal the capital beyond its headline sights. Continue to Ha Long Bay for an overnight cruise among limestone karsts and calm waters, with lunch served as the scenery opens around you. Enjoy time on deck, seasonal activities, sunset drinks and dinner on board before waking to Tai Chi, a morning cruise and brunch as the boat returns to shore.
HUE IMPERIAL CITY AND HAI VAN PASS TO HOI AN: Step into Vietnam’s royal past inside Hue’s Imperial Citadel and Purple Forbidden City, then continue by traditional rickshaw through the wider Imperial City, where lakes, avenues and neighbourhood life unfold inside the old ramparts. Taste Hue’s distinctive banh specialities at a family-run garden-house eatery before travelling south on one of Vietnam’s great coastal drives. The Hai Van Pass brings mountain curves and sweeping sea views, ending in atmospheric Hoi An with its lantern-lit lanes, riverside setting and old merchant houses.
ANGKOR WAT TEMPLES AND CAMBODIA HERITAGE: Cambodia brings the journey’s great historical centrepiece, beginning in Phnom Penh with the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National Museum and a hands-on Khmer cooking class. In Siem Reap, explore the essential Angkor temples with expert guiding, from the early Roluos monuments to Angkor Thom, the Bayon’s serene stone faces and the root-wrapped corridors of Ta Prohm. The experience culminates at Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument, where vast galleries, bas-reliefs, moats and towers reveal the scale of Khmer civilisation.
LUANG PRABANG MEKONG CRUISE AND KUANG SI WATERFALLS: Finish in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO-listed riverside town of golden temples, markets and slow-living charm. Travel by vintage tuk-tuk to Wat Xieng Thong and local craft centres, then cruise upstream on the Mekong River to the Pak Ou Caves, where thousands of Buddha images fill limestone chambers above the water. Visit a weaving village, experience a private Baci blessing, and head into the countryside for Kuang Si Waterfalls, with turquoise pools, shaded paths, village encounters and time to swim or simply unwind.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
Explore Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos on an 18-day Southeast Asia journey combining street life, coastal scenery, Khmer temples, Mekong cruises, waterfalls and village encounters. Expert guides, smooth flights, standout stays and hands-on food and culture experiences create a seamless, immersive journey that feels curated rather than rushed.
Arrive in Hanoi and, after immigration and baggage reclaim, meet your guide for a private transfer into the city, usually around 45 minutes. Your hotel sits close to the quieter, more authentic edge of the Old Quarter, ideal for gentle first explorations on foot. Rooms are normally available from 14:00; early check-in can be arranged in advance for a supplement. After time to settle in and rest, meet your guide in the late afternoon for a short walk to a nearby bia hoi, Hanoi’s classic street pub, where you can sample a fresh local beer.
Begin at Hoan Kiem Lake and explore Hanoi in a lively, local way. Ride an electric buggy through the Old Quarter and lake district, passing the Opera House, Cathedral and one of the last remaining old city gates. Step off at Dong Xuan Market for a quick browse, then continue on foot along elegant Phan Dinh Phung Avenue, pausing for pavement coffee near the old water tower. Walk past the Northern Gate of the Citadel and Cua Bac Church before lunch at a traditional rice restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Temple of Literature, then choose either railway-side backstreets and working-class apartment blocks, or the Ho Chi Minh complex. Evening at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Leave Hanoi this morning and drive through the Red River Delta towards Ha Long Bay. After boarding formalities and a welcome drink, step aboard your cruise vessel and begin gliding into the limestone archipelago as lunch is served. In the afternoon, cruise towards a quieter area of the bay, with time to relax on deck, sunbathe, swim or join light exploration such as kayaking or a cave visit, depending on weather, season and the cruise programme. As the sun drops, enjoy the sundeck atmosphere with an aperitif or cooking demonstration before dinner. Overnight in a private en-suite cabin.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Early risers may join a sunrise Tai Chi session on the sundeck as the bay turns silver-green. Continue cruising with a morning excursion, often to a cave or scenic feature of the archipelago, before returning to pack and check out of your cabin. A generous brunch is served as the boat heads back to the wharf. Disembark and transfer to Hanoi Airport for your flight to Hue, Vietnam’s former imperial capital. On arrival, meet your local guide and continue to your hotel, well placed for the Citadel. The evening is free to settle in, take a riverside stroll or enjoy a quiet dinner.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Begin with a guided walk through Hue’s Imperial Citadel and the Purple Forbidden City, crossing the former royal residence from south gate to north while your guide brings Vietnam’s imperial past into focus. Pause for a refreshment in a local café, then continue by traditional rickshaw through the wider Imperial City, passing lakes, avenues, neighbourhood streets and daily life within the old walls. Continue to Kim Long village, once home to mandarins and court officials, before lunch at a simple family-run garden-house eatery serving Hue’s famous banh specialities. In the afternoon, drive to Hoi An via the Hai Van Pass, with sweeping coastal views en route.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Start with an orientation walk through Hoi An’s UNESCO-listed old town, where yellow-walled shophouses, lantern-lined lanes and historic landmarks reveal the city’s trading heritage. Continue to the central market to meet your chef and browse stalls of herbs, spices and fresh produce, an engaging introduction to Vietnamese flavours. From the riverside, board a boat for a short cruise to a small farm on an island in the Thu Bon River. Enjoy a hands-on cooking session, then sit down to the dishes you have prepared for lunch. Return to town by boat and keep the rest of the day free for the beach, cafés, galleries, tailor shops or an evening wander beneath the lanterns.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Transfer to Danang Airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival, meet your guide and continue into District 1. Your luggage will be taken directly to the hotel while you begin with an easy guided walk through Saigon’s colonial-era landmarks, typically including the Central Post Office, Continental Hotel, Opera House and City Hall. This short introduction brings the city’s layered history to life before you reach your hotel for check-in. The remainder of the day is free to relax, visit a nearby café or begin exploring the city’s vibrant streets at your own pace.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Leave the city at 08:00 and drive into a quieter, less-visited corner of the Mekong Delta. Board a private boat to explore waterways where daily life unfolds along the banks, with time to visit a small local workshop and learn how the delta’s produce is processed. Continue to a little-known island for lunch at a local guesthouse, then set off by bicycle along narrow lanes beneath palms and fruit orchards. Stop at a farm to learn about Sâm jelly and taste it fresh, then switch to a small sampan to glide through a mangrove-fringed channel before returning to Ho Chi Minh City by late afternoon.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Meet your guide for an original Saigon morning beyond the usual highlights. Begin in District 3 at the city’s oldest café, opened in 1938, then thread through everyday street culture: market lanes, Chung Cu’s working-class apartment blocks and the Ho Thi Ky quarter, known for its flower market and Khmer food scene. Continue into District 10 for a final burst of local energy before ending on a celebrated street-food street for lunch. Afterwards, transfer to the airport for your flight to Phnom Penh. On arrival, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. The evening is at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
After breakfast, set out with your guide to explore Phnom Penh’s key cultural landmarks. Visit the Royal Palace complex and the Silver Pagoda, then continue to the National Museum for an excellent overview of Khmer sculpture and art. Later, visit Wat Phnom, the city’s symbolic hilltop pagoda, and, time permitting, pause at Central Market for a glimpse of local commerce and Art Deco architecture. After lunch at a local restaurant, travel by tuk-tuk to a Khmer cooking class. Begin with a market visit to learn about local herbs, vegetables and seasonings, then return to the kitchen for a hands-on session guided by a Cambodian chef. Enjoy your own cooked dinner before returning to your hotel.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Enjoy a relaxed morning in Phnom Penh, with time for a swim, a café or independent exploration. An optional half-day visit can be arranged to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Russian Market for deeper insight into Cambodia’s modern history and local life. Late morning, set off by private vehicle for Siem Reap. En route, stop at Kampong Kdei Bridge, a remarkable Angkorian laterite bridge and an impressive example of Khmer engineering. Continue to Siem Reap, arriving in the late afternoon. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxed first evening in this lively gateway to the Angkor temples.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Begin with the Roluos Group, among the earliest major Khmer temple complexes near Angkor. Visit Preah Ko, Bakong and Lolei, where brick towers, carvings and early temple-mountain forms reveal the foundations of Khmer architectural development. After lunch, continue to Angkor Thom, the last great capital of the Khmer Empire. Enter through the monumental South Gate and visit the Bayon, famous for its serene stone faces and detailed bas-reliefs. Continue to the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King before ending at Ta Prohm, where giant tree roots lace through stone corridors, creating one of Angkor’s most atmospheric temple scenes.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Travel this morning to Banteay Srei, a small but exquisite pink sandstone temple celebrated for some of the finest carvings in Cambodia. Continue to Banteay Samre, known for its elegant proportions, tall towers and quieter setting. After lunch, turn to Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument and the great architectural symbol of Cambodia. Explore its vast galleries, bas-reliefs, towers and moats while learning how the temple’s design reflects Mount Meru and the cosmic ocean. Stay into the late afternoon as the light softens across the stone, then return to Siem Reap. Tonle Sap Lake or local craft visits can be arranged as optional extensions, subject to time.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Enjoy a free morning in Siem Reap, with time for a slow breakfast, last-minute shopping or a short café stop before your onward journey. Depending on your flight time, meet your guide for the transfer to the airport and fly to Luang Prabang. On arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel. Check-in is usually from 14:00; if you arrive early, luggage can be left at reception while you begin a gentle first immersion on foot in the UNESCO-protected old town, framed by the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. The evening is free for a relaxed dinner.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Meet your guide and vintage tuk-tuk driver for a lively morning of culture and local life. Start at the Morning Market for a direct look at daily habits and food culture, then continue to Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang’s most revered and beautifully detailed temple. Ride on to a craft centre on the Mekong’s edge to meet artisans and see traditional skills in action, followed by lunch overlooking the river. In the afternoon, visit the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum, then return briefly to the hotel to refresh. Late day, climb Mount Phousi for sunset views over the peninsula before browsing the night market’s stalls.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Transfer to the pier and join a Mekong River cruise upstream towards the Pak Ou Caves. En route, stop at Ban Xang Hai, known for traditional rice alcohol distillation, then continue to the caves themselves, where thousands of Buddha images are tucked into limestone chambers above the river. Lunch is served on board, often with views of dramatic cliffs and riverside villages. Return to Luang Prabang in the afternoon and visit Ban Phanom, a Lue minority village known for cotton and silk weaving passed down through generations. Later, experience a private Baci ceremony, where elders offer blessings and tie white cotton strings around your wrists for good fortune.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Begin at the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, subject to opening days, for insight into Laos’ diverse ethnic groups. Continue to Ock Pop Tok, a respected textile centre where traditional dyeing and weaving techniques are demonstrated. Later, drive towards the Kuang Si Waterfalls, stopping at local villages to learn about rural life and the traditions of Hmong, Lao Loum or Khmu communities. At Kuang Si, walk shaded paths beside turquoise pools and multi-tiered cascades, with time to swim if conditions allow. Visit the nearby Bear Rescue Centre before lunch near the falls, then return to Luang Prabang for a final evening at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Enjoy a final morning at leisure in Luang Prabang, with time for breakfast, a last walk through the peninsula or a quiet coffee by the Mekong or Nam Khan River. Check-out is typically by midday; late check-out can sometimes be arranged in advance, subject to availability and an additional charge. Depending on your onward flight, your guide will meet you for the transfer to Luang Prabang Airport. Depart with a rich journey behind you, from Vietnam’s street life and seascapes to Cambodia’s Khmer heritage and the calm river landscapes of Laos.
Meals Included: Breakfast
GROUP, GUIDE SUPPORT & TRIP STYLE: This is an 18-day small-group journey through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, led by an experienced local guide team (plus a cruise manager in Ha Long Bay), with private drivers and specialist local guides where required. Days blend cultural touring, market walks, boat travel and a handful of gentle active elements (easy cycling in the Mekong Delta; plenty of walking on temple days). Expect early starts for key sights and occasional longer road transfers; roadworks and variable traffic are normal in parts of Indochina, so a flexible mindset is important. Some services are delivered by independent third parties (airlines, hotels, transport operators and local tourist offices). While suppliers are carefully selected, delays, changes and disruptions outside our control can occur.
SIGHTSEEING SCHEDULES, CLOSURES & LOCAL RULES: Museum and monument opening hours can affect the order of visits. Many museums are closed on Mondays (and some partly on Fridays) and on certain public holidays. In Hanoi, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed every Monday and Friday and throughout September and October; the Ho Chi Minh Residence is also closed Mondays and Fridays. Where a planned site is closed, your guide will adjust timings or substitute a suitable alternative. Please note cyclo/rickshaw rides (where offered) are subject to local government approval and may be modified or replaced at short notice.
ACCOMMODATION, MEALS, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation is in comfortable, well-located hotels throughout, plus an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise in a private en-suite cabin. Rooms are typically twin-share; single rooms may be available on request (subject to availability). Included meals follow the day-by-day programme—usually hotel breakfasts plus selected lunches/dinners (including cruise meals and one or more cooking experiences). Cuisine varies across the three countries, from fresh noodle and rice dishes to river fish, herbs and tropical produce. Vegetarian options are generally available; strict diets and allergies should be advised before booking so suppliers can be briefed. Drink sealed bottled water and/or water provided by the team where included.
WEATHER, SEASONS & WHAT TO PACK: Conditions vary significantly by region and month—northern Vietnam can be cooler, central Vietnam warmer, and the Mekong/lowlands often hot and humid; Laos evenings in Luang Prabang can feel cooler. Weather information should be used as a guide only: rainfall, heat and river/sea conditions can affect boat operations and outdoor sightseeing. Pack light layers, breathable clothing, sun protection and a compact waterproof jacket. For temples, bring modest clothing covering shoulders and knees. Comfortable walking shoes are essential; a small daypack is useful for market days, boat excursions and temple touring.
MONEY, VALUABLES, PERSONAL SECURITY & INSURANCE: Carry a sensible cash float for markets and smaller purchases; card use is common in cities but less reliable in rural areas. We strongly advise keeping valuables (passport, money, cards, jewellery, sensitive documents and devices) in the hotel safe whenever possible. During excursions, do not leave valuables in vehicles—even for short stops—and keep personal belongings with you at all times. Travel insurance is mandatory and should cover medical treatment, trip disruption, and any activities included in the programme (such as boat travel and cycling). Programmes, prices, services and conditions are based on those valid at the time of proposal and can change without notice until all services have been paid in full.
PASSPORTS, VISAS, FLIGHTS & TRAVEL INSURANCE: Entry requirements vary by nationality and can change. British passport holders: Vietnam is visa-free for tourist/business visits up to 45 days. Cambodia requires a tourist visa (typically 30 days), easiest via e-Visa in advance or visa on arrival (about US$30–36), and a mandatory electronic Arrival Card completed within 7 days of arrival. Laos requires a visa; from 1 January 2025 tourists typically receive a 30-day stay via eVisa (apply at least 5 days ahead) or Visa on Arrival. Passports should have 6 months’ validity and two blank pages. Flights: names must match passports; fares can change until ticketed.
