Best things to do in Paro

Paro, located in western Bhutan, is a town with stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and unique architecture. The famous Tiger's Nest Monastery, which clings to a cliff above the forested valley, is one of its top attractions. The Paro Dzong, a 17th-century fortress and monastery, is also of great cultural and historical significance. Paro offers many hiking and trekking trails, including the popular Druk Path Trek. It's also the entry point for Bhutan, with the country's only international airport located here. Paro's breathtaking scenery, rich history, and warm hospitality make it a must-visit destination.

EXPERIENCES

A range of thrilling experiences handpicked by our experts. Don’t see one that’s just right for you? No problem. Our local insiders will create precisely what you want.

Tiger Nest Monastery

Tiger's Nest Monastery, or Paro Taktsang, is a sacred Buddhist site perched on a cliffside about 3,000 feet (900 meters) above the Paro Valley. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to the site on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours. The hike to the monastery takes around 4-5 hours round trip and offers breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape.

National Museum

Housed in the Ta Dzong, a 17th-century watchtower, the National Museum of Bhutan showcases Bhutan's cultural and natural history. The museum features exhibits on traditional art, textiles, weapons, religious relics, and Bhutanese stamps. A visit to the museum is an excellent way to learn about the country's rich heritage and history.

Hiking and Trekking

Chele La Pass is one of the highest mountain passes in Bhutan and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Visitors can take a hike to the pass and enjoy a picnic or camping trip at its scenic summit.

Fortress Monastery

Paro Rinpung Dzong, a 17th-century fortress and monastery, is an important religious and administrative centre in Paro. The Dzong features elaborate woodwork, ornate wall paintings, and a central prayer hall filled with statues and religious artifacts. The annual Paro Tsechu, a vibrant religious festival, is held in the Dzong's courtyard and attracts visitors from across the country.

Stone Bath

A Bhutanese hot stone bath, or "dotsho," is a unique way to relax and rejuvenate after a long day of sightseeing. Heated river stones are placed in a wooden tub filled with water infused with medicinal herbs. The heat from the stones releases minerals and essential oils, creating a soothing and therapeutic experience.

Kichu Lhakhang

Kichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, was built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century. The temple houses a statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni and is adorned with exquisite murals and paintings. Kichu Lhakhang is considered one of the most sacred sites in Bhutan and is believed to be one of the 108 temples built by King Songtsen Gampo to subdue a demoness causing chaos across the Himalayas.

Attend Festival

Paro Tshechu is an annual festival that celebrates the teachings of Guru Rinpoche. The festival includes traditional dances, music, and other cultural activities and is a unique opportunity to experience Bhutanese culture.

Boutique

The Amankora Paro is one of five Aman properties in Bhutan that are built around the basic principles of a beautiful natural location, small number of rooms and exclusive service. The 20-room Paro lodge is located in the woods with majestic views of the 17th century Drugyel Dzong ruin and the Greater Himalaya that include 7,300m Chomolhari, Bhutan’s highest mountain.

Boutique

Uma by COMO, Paro is tucked away into the side of a hill, with about nine or ten blocks of stone, designed in Bhutanese architecture, nicely camouflaged behind a pine forest. But the beautiful vegetable dyes, of dark blue, red and orange can be seen from miles away. It is too good to be hidden. The main building, formerly a Bhutanese nobleman's home, forms the hotel's heart, whilst the rooms and suites are located in glades planted with azaleas.

Resort

The first view of Zhiwa Ling Hotel in Paro, is a breathtaking three story foyer, with a wooden staircase encircling the area. Light pours in from the top, and the walls are adorned with artefacts and artwork at each level, reflecting Bhutan's spirit and culture. Located on the second floor is a gompa, made with 450-year-old timbers from the famous Gangtey Monastery, the crowning glory of this cultural landmark in Paro.

Wellness Retreat

Six Senses Paro, perched high above the Paro Valley in Bhutan, is a luxurious retreat that masterfully combines contemporary elegance with traditional Bhutanese architecture. The hotel’s design features clean lines and natural materials, such as stone and wood, which seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscape. Expansive windows and open spaces provide panoramic views of the Paro Valley and the Himalayan mountains, creating a serene and majestic ambiance that reflects the natural beauty of the region.

Boutique

Naksel Boutique Hotel & Spa is an eco-friendly property, set above the Paro valley in typical Bhutanese architecture and style. Naksel is a community-based project in collaboration with the nearby Ngoba village whose agro-based economy focusses on apple orchards, rice paddies and potato fields. Surrounded by pine-forested mountains and stunning views of the snow-capped mountains, including Mt Jumolhari (7,300m), it offers a great base to relax and explore the valley.

Wellness Retreat

Six Senses Bhutan is opening five individual satellite resorts in five separate locations; Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, Bumthang and Paro. All the lodges are under the umbrella of one all-encompassing name: Six Senses Bhutan with a view to offer five unique experiences crafted into one enchanted journey through the Kingdom. Opening in Spring 2018, it will raise the luxury bar, for an exceptional experience in the colourful Kingdom known as the Happiest Place on Earth.
