Ashgabat to Ashgabat – 8 Days
Join us on an 8-day Turkmenistan Heritage Tour, designed for travellers seeking a deep dive into Central Asia’s lesser-known marvels. This small group tour begins in Ashgabat, famed for its gleaming white marble architecture and surreal monuments. Explore Independence Monument, Neutrality Square, and the Carpet Museum before heading to the ancient ruins of Old Nisa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Journey east to the legendary Silk Road city of Merv, where centuries of empires have left behind awe-inspiring relics. Continue into the remote Karakum Desert to witness the Darvaza gas crater, an extraordinary fiery pit also known as the ‘door to hell’—a must-see highlight of all Turkmenistan tours.
The adventure moves north to Gonur Depe, a fascinating Bronze Age archaeological site, and Kunya-Urgench, once the capital of the Khorezm Empire. In the west, you’ll arrive at the Caspian Sea city of Turkmenbashi. Here, enjoy a coastal cruise and visit local markets to immerse yourself in regional culture. Expect unique encounters with Turkmen hospitality, traditions, and cuisine—plov, shashlik, and vodka included. With its blend of historical treasures and remote landscapes, this Turkmenistan trip offers a perfect standalone journey or extension to broader Silk Road or Five Stans itineraries.
ASHGABAT: GATEWAY TO TURKMENISTAN’S MODERN IDENTITY: Begin your Turkmenistan tour in Ashgabat, the marble-clad capital filled with striking architecture. Explore Independence Monument, Neutrality Square, and the renowned Carpet Museum, offering insight into the country’s national pride, cultural traditions, and unique post-Soviet transformation.
MERV & OLD NISA: TIMELESS SILK ROAD CITIES: Discover UNESCO-listed Merv, one of the most important cities along the ancient Silk Road, and the ruins of Old Nisa, capital of the Parthian Empire. These archaeological treasures highlight Turkmenistan’s deep-rooted significance in Central Asian history and heritage.
GONUR DEPE: BRONZE AGE CIVILISATION IN THE DESERT: Explore the ruins of Gonur Depe, the heart of the ancient Margiana civilisation near Mary. This archaeological site in the Karakum Desert offers a rare glimpse into Bronze Age urban planning, sacred temples, and even fossilised dinosaur footprints.
KUNYA-URGENCH & AVAZA: FROM RUINS TO THE CASPIAN COAST: Witness the grandeur of Kunya-Urgench’s medieval mausoleums in Dashoguz, then relax by the Caspian Sea in Turkmenbashi and Avaza. This contrast reveals Turkmenistan’s diverse cultural landscapes, from spiritual relics to modern coastal development and natural beauty.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
