This tour is an in-depth journey of Japan’s natural beauty, spiritual depth and cultural richness, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Japan holidays offer a unique blend of modern cities and traditional towns, allowing travellers to experience the best of both worlds.

Highlights

Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims across the Dewa Sanzan, a symbolic journey of birth, death and rebirth in Japan’s most sacred landscape.

OIRASE STREAM & LAKE TOWADA: Cycle through the mystical Oirase Gorge, a haven of crystal-clear streams and woodland offering breathtaking views. Discover the beauty of Lake Towada, a lake in a volcanic caldera, and relax in traditional hot springs in a charming onsen town surrounded by nature’s serenity, an introduction to northern Japan’s landscapes.

FESTIVALS & LIVING TRADITIONS: Join in the Tanabata, Neputa and Kanto festivals and experience Japan’s local culture. See Namahage rituals and samurai traditions in Kakunodate and get a glimpse into the seasonal rhythms and folklore of northern Japan. The beauty of autumn foliage and the fleeting nature of cherry blossom season are celebrated throughout the region, highlighting their importance in Japanese culture.

SHIRAKAMI SANCHI & AOIKE LAKE: Enter the UNESCO-listed beech and cedar forests of Shirakami Sanchi. Hike to the Anmon Falls and marvel at Aoike, a cobalt-blue lake of incredible clarity. This natural sanctuary is ancient Japan and feels peaceful, pure and connected to nature.

Participants will find themselves captivated by UNESCO World Heritage sites, traditional rituals, and the country’s culinary delights. Cultural immersion is deepened by connecting with Japanese people and their traditions. In Japanese culture, mountains represent spiritual purity, challenge, and a profound connection to the divine, making this tour perfect for those looking to dive deep into the essence of Japan’s rich cultural tapestry and natural wonders.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

YOUR TRIP DESIGN, PACE & FLEXIBILITY: This itinerary is fully private and designed to trace a spiritual and nature-led arc from Tokyo into Japan’s northern landscapes, then on to Osaka with an art-focused finish on Naoshima. We will advise the most efficient routing to balance shrine and temple visits with time outdoors—Oirase Stream, Mount Hakkoda, Aomori, Akita and Shirakami Sanchi—then refine the day-by-day with you. The pace can be softened by adding nights in the north (for longer forest walks and onsen time) or by extending Osaka/Naoshima for a calmer ending. Seasonal weather and daylight can shape walking conditions, so we plan with sensible buffers.

PRIVATE GUIDES, DRIVERS & ON-THE-GROUND SUPPORT: This is a high-end private journey with professional local guides meeting you for key touring days and private transfers arranged where they add comfort and efficiency. We manage smooth arrivals, hotel check-ins, and well-timed access at the sacred sites—particularly around the Dewa mountains in Tsuruoka—so you are met where it matters and the experience feels effortless. In the north, local conditions can change quickly (rain, wind, trail closures), so we keep the order of visits flexible and re-sequence when needed to protect the best walks and viewpoints. You will have clear on-the-ground contacts and practical support throughout.

ACCOMMODATION STANDARDS & MEAL BASIS: We select premium, well-located accommodation to match your brief, typically combining high-comfort city hotels with regional stays that suit the landscape—often including onsen-style options where they add atmosphere and recovery time. We prioritise comfort, service and positioning that reduces daily travel time, especially in rural areas where inventory is limited. Breakfast is typically included, with other meals arranged around your preferences—curated restaurant recommendations and reservations in Tokyo and Osaka, and reliable local dining in northern regions. Room categories and upgrades should be confirmed early in peak seasons. Dietary needs are usually manageable with advance notice, though options can narrow outside major cities.

FLIGHTS, VISAS, HEALTH & TRAVEL INSURANCE: This journey is typically built around Japan’s rail network (including bullet trains) with private transfers as required, keeping travel efficient while reaching more remote northern regions. Expect light-to-moderate activity with regular walking on uneven paths, steps at shrines/temples, and forest trails; some early starts may be used for quieter visits and better light. International flights are optional: we can arrange the trip as land-only, or include flights as a flight-inclusive package under our ATOL (where applicable). Entry requirements depend on your passport; we will guide you on typical requirements and timing, while you remain responsible for compliance. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential.

COSTING, PAYMENTS, CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS: Tailor-made pricing is built from live supplier rates (accommodation, guides, transfers, rail arrangements and any booked experiences), so availability and costs can change until services are secured. The main price drivers are seasonality, limited-inventory regional accommodation, and the level of curated experiences you choose (including any museum/timed entries around Naoshima). Some high-demand properties may require advance payments to secure space; we will confirm exactly what is due and by when before taking payment. Changes after booking can trigger supplier fees or rate differences; we will explain the impact before actioning changes and provide clear documentation of deadlines and terms.
