Trekking, culture, and hot springs in southern Japan

Sacred Trails of Southern Japan

Tokyo to Tokyo – 14 Days

Expedition Overview

Discover the sacred and scenic landscapes of southern Japan on a journey that blends culture, adventure, and wellness. From Tokyo’s energy to Kyoto’s temples, this tour explores the country’s spiritual heartlands before heading south to the dramatic volcanoes and valleys of Kyushu. The Kumano Kodo, a network of ancient pilgrimage trails on the Kii Peninsula, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural and spiritual significance. These pilgrimage routes are among the world's most revered, drawing comparisons to the Camino de Santiago for their historical importance and spiritual journey. Walking these sacred trails, which are part of a globally celebrated world heritage, offers a unique connection to Japan’s rich traditions and natural beauty.

Highlights include hiking Mount Aso’s crater rim, watching sacred dances in Takachiho, relaxing in outdoor hot springs, and walking across forest suspension bridges. You’ll meet local artisans, visit samurai towns, and enjoy traditional meals in peaceful ryokans and scenic lodges. This is an active and immersive experience designed for travellers seeking deeper connection—through movement, local culture, and nature. Whether you’re trekking volcanic trails or soaking in a mountain onsen, Sacred Trails of Southern Japan offers a richly rewarding path into Japan’s lesser-known spiritual and natural beauty.

Highlights

HIKING JAPANS VOLCANO TRAILS: Walk across the dramatic landscapes of Mount Aso and the Kuju Highlands, exploring crater rims and volcanic valleys. These treks offer panoramic views of dramatic mountain ranges, and encounters with Kyushu’s powerful natural forces, including challenging mountain passes that add to the adventure—making it ideal for travellers seeking active experiences in southern Japan’s highlands.

CULTURAL IMMERSION AND SACRED SITES: Discover the spiritual heritage of Japan through temple visits, traditional Yokagura dances in Takachiho, and listen to ancient myths that live on in these sacred places. From Kyoto’s UNESCO-listed shrines to cave temples in Nichinan, the tour reveals the country’s deep cultural roots and spiritual traditions. Experience the Kumano Sanzan—the three grand shrines of the Kumano region—which are revered Shinto shrines and important Kumano shrines, forming sacred areas that have drawn pilgrims for centuries.

CYCLING AND COUNTRYSIDE ADVENTURE: Enjoy a scenic bike ride through Takachiho’s quiet backroads, cycling past tea plantations and through picturesque river valleys, followed by a forest walk to Aya’s suspension bridge.
