Mongolia Naadam Festival and Gobi Desert

Ulaanbaatar to Ulaanbaatar – 14 days

Expedition Overview

This 14-day Mongolia journey combines the Naadam Festival with a classic overland adventure into the Gobi Desert. Begin in Ulaanbaatar, then travel through Bayangobi’s “Small Gobi” and the Khugnu Khan Mountains, visiting Erdenekhamba Monastery and trying Mongolian traditions such as archery, deel dress and knuckle-bone games. Continue to Kharkhorin, the former Mongol imperial capital, for Erdene Zuu Monastery and a hands-on calligraphy experience, before crossing the steppe to the atmospheric ruins of Ongi Monastery.

Deep in the Gobi, explore the Flaming Cliffs, Khongor Sand Dunes, camel-herding culture and ancient Khavtsgait petroglyphs. Return north via Baga Gazryn Chuluu and the Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue, then refresh in Ulaanbaatar before Naadam’s opening ceremony, the “Three Manly Games” and horse racing at Khui Doloon Khudag. With one fixed annual departure, this journey is carefully timed to combine festival spectacle with Mongolia’s vast desert landscapes.

Highlights

NAADAM FESTIVAL ULAANBAATAR (Opening Ceremony + Three Manly Games): Experience Mongolia’s biggest cultural event at its most theatrical: the Grand Opening of Naadam at the National Stadium. Watch the ceremonial procession of the Nine White Banners, then enjoy the colour and pageantry of performers, musicians and athletes dressed as ancient warriors. Spend the day moving between the festival’s centrepieces—the Three Manly Games: Mongolian wrestling (power and ritual), traditional archery (precision in full national dress), and knuckle-bone shooting (a uniquely Mongolian skill game). Between events, sample classic festival snacks, browse craft stalls and soak up the national pride that makes Naadam feel less like a show and more like a living heartbeat.

KHUI DOLOON KHUDAG HORSE RACING (Naadam Equestrian Day Trip): See Naadam where Mongolia feels most itself—on the open steppe at Khui Doloon Khudag, the horse-racing grounds outside Ulaanbaatar. These are long-distance races across natural terrain, with young jockeys riding at speed in a setting that celebrates Mongolia’s deep horse culture. The atmosphere extends beyond the track: cultural performances, food tents, and crowds in regional dress create a vibrant outdoor festival. A visit to a horse trainer’s camp adds authenticity, showing how horses are raised, conditioned and respected as part of nomadic life. Expect a full day outdoors with big skies, wind and sun—an unforgettable contrast to stadium events.

GOBI DESERT TOUR MONGOLIA (Flaming Cliffs and Khongor Sand Dunes): Go from steppe to true desert drama as you cross into the Gobi’s most iconic landscapes. Walk the red-orange escarpments of the Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag), made famous by Roy Chapman Andrews’ dinosaur egg discoveries, and feel the scale of fossil country in the eroded gullies and glowing rock. Then reach the Khongor Sand Dunes, Mongolia’s largest dune system—towering walls of sand stretching for kilometres. Explore the green Khongor River oasis, meet a local camel-herding family, and ride a two-humped Bactrian camel adapted to harsh desert life. Sunsets here are cinematic, with dunes silhouetted against a wide, silent horizon.

KHARKHORIN AND ERDENE ZUU MONASTERY (Mongol Empire Heritage Route): Follow Mongolia’s historical spine through the Orkhon region to Kharkhorin, once the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire. The Kharkhorin Museum provides essential context—how the city functioned, why it mattered, and how its legacy shaped Mongolia’s identity. Nearby, explore Erdene Zuu Monastery, the country’s first Buddhist monastery, built using stones from the ancient capital and surrounded by iconic stupas and temple courtyards. A hands-on Mongolian calligraphy lesson (traditional Uyghur script) adds depth—connecting imperial history to the writing systems used for decrees and laws. It’s a powerful cultural counterbalance to the Gobi’s landscapes and Naadam’s spectacle.

Why Asian Geographical?

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Ulaanbaatar

Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and receive a warm welcome from the Juulchin team before transferring into the city. After check-in, take time to rest, then stretch your legs with an easy introduction walk—your hotel sits in the centre, ideal for relaxed sightseeing without long drives. Head to Sukhbaatar Square, Mongolia’s civic heart, framed by major government and cultural buildings, and enjoy the first feel of Ulaanbaatar’s mix of socialist-era architecture and modern cafés. The remainder of the day stays flexible for a light city wander, a coffee stop, or early sleep to adjust. Gather for dinner in the evening, ready for tomorrow’s departure into the steppe.

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2

Bayangobi

Bayangobi “Small Gobi” & Khugnu Khan Mountains Depart Ulaanbaatar early and drive towards Bayangobi, a dramatic “small Gobi” landscape where sand, steppe and rocky hills meet. In the afternoon, explore Erdenekhamba Monastery, a hidden temple tucked into the rugged Khugnu Khan Mountains, offering a quiet contrast to the open plains. As evening cools the desert air, step into Mongolian tradition with hands-on cultural activities: try archery while wearing a classic deel, then learn the social game of shagai (knuckle bones), a favourite pastime across the countryside. Overnight in a ger camp, with the first big-sky sunset and a true sense of distance from the city.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

Ger Camp

Ger camps in Mongolia offer a comfortable way to experience the country’s nomadic landscapes without losing their sense of place. Guests stay in traditional felt-covered gers, usually furnished with proper beds, simple heating and shared or private facilities depending on the camp. Meals are served in a central dining ger or lodge, often featuring local ingredients. Although standards vary by region, we select the best available camps, combining authenticity, warmth and access to remote steppe, desert and mountain scenery.

DAY 3

KHARKHORIN

A short drive brings you to Kharkhorin, the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire. Begin at the Kharkhorin Museum for a clear grounding in the city’s history and the wider Orkhon Valley legacy. Continue to Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery, built using stones from the ruins of the ancient capital—its walls and stupas giving a strong sense of continuity between empire, religion and modern identity. Add a hands-on cultural moment with a Mongolian calligraphy lesson, practising the traditional Uyghur script once used for imperial decrees. Settle into your ger camp, with time to enjoy the open valley scenery. Distance: 103 km road + 14 km off-road.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4

Ongi Monastery

Ongi Monastery ruins: steppe to Gobi transition. Leave the greener Orkhon landscapes and begin a long, cinematic drive south as the steppe gradually dries into the Gobi Desert. The sense of scale grows—big horizons, sparse settlements and changing colours under open skies. By evening, arrive near the Ongi River and explore the evocative ruins of Ongi Monastery, once a major religious centre before its destruction during the communist purges. The site’s broken walls and scattered foundations, set against desert quiet, make a powerful stop for reflection and photographs. Overnight in camp near the river, where the desert night air and star-filled sky underline how far you’ve travelled from the capital.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

KHONGORIIN ELS

Flaming Cliffs & on to Khongor Sand Dunes. Cross deeper into the Gobi, watching the landscape shift again—hardpan plains, low ridges and red-earth outcrops. Reach the legendary Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag), famed for its glowing red rock and for Roy Chapman Andrews’ 1920s discovery of the first dinosaur egg nests. Take a short hike to appreciate the colours, eroded gullies and fossil-era context. Then continue towards the Khongor Sand Dunes, Mongolia’s largest dune system, stretching for more than 170 km. Arrive as the light softens, with towering dunes on the horizon and a proper desert atmosphere. Settle into your ger camp for dinner and a quiet evening. Distance: 298 km off-road.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:

DAY 6

KHONGORIIN ELS

Khongor Dunes, camel family & Khavtsgait Petroglyphs. Rise early to explore the Khongor River Oasis, a surprising green ribbon at the base of immense dunes. Walk along the oasis edge and take in the scale of the sand walls. Later, visit a local camel-herding family to learn how they live in desert conditions, then enjoy a ride on a two-humped Bactrian camel, perfectly adapted to the Gobi’s extremes. In the afternoon, travel to the Khavtsgait Petroglyphs, an ancient rock-art site dated to roughly 7,000–15,000 years, where carvings offer a glimpse into early beliefs and daily life. Return to camp for a well-earned dinner, with dunes silhouetted against the evening sky. Distance: 182 km off-road.

DAY 7

Yol Valley

Yol Valley: the Gobi’s hidden canyon. Travel to the Yol Valley, named for the lammergeier vulture, and discover one of the Gobi’s most unexpected landscapes: a narrow canyon with cool air, rock walls and a stream threading the valley floor. Take a hike through the gorge, watching for birds and enjoying the contrast between desert plains and this shaded, water-cut corridor. In many years, a strip of ice can linger here until late June, a memorable reminder of the region’s extremes. After the walk, continue to your lodge and settle in for a quieter evening—tomorrow will build on the Gobi story as you move onwards through Mongolia’s southern heartlands.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8

Baga Gazryn Chuluu Nature Reserve

Depart early for Baga Gazryn Chuluu, a dramatic granite outcrop rising from the steppe like a stone island. As you enter the reserve, the scenery shifts to rocky canyons, wind-shaped formations and quiet valleys that shelter hardy plants and wildlife. Spend the day exploring on foot, with short hikes to viewpoints and hidden corners, including caves and natural corridors carved into the rock. Visit the atmospheric Lovonchombo Monastery ruins, a reminder of Mongolia’s spiritual past set against an almost lunar landscape. Arrive at camp with time to relax before dinner—this is one of the trip’s best “big-sky, no-crowds” locations, ideal for sunset photography and stargazing.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9

Terelj National Park

Continue north towards Tsonjin Boldog to visit the iconic Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue Complex—a 40-metre stainless-steel monument dominating the open steppe. If conditions allow, climb to the viewing platform for wide horizons and a sense of Mongolia’s scale. Then travel into Gorkhi–Terelj National Park, where granite formations and pine forest replace the steppe’s open grasslands. Stop at Turtle Rock for classic Terelj scenery, then hike to Aryapala Meditation Temple, perched above the valley with peaceful courtyards and expansive views. Arrive at your lodge in time to unwind after an active day of landmark sights and fresh-air walking. Distance: 280 km road + 38 km off-road.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10

Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar rest day. After breakfast, begin the return to Ulaanbaatar, arriving around lunchtime. The afternoon is intentionally light—time to refresh after the Gobi and steppe crossings and prepare for the energy of Naadam. Use the downtime to wash clothes, repack day bags, and enjoy a calm stroll near the hotel. If you’d like to be out and about, your guide can suggest easy options such as a café stop, a short shopping run, or simply watching city life from Sukhbaatar Square. A restful evening now makes the festival days more enjoyable, especially with early departures and full stadium programmes ahead.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 11

Ulaanbaatar

Today marks Mongolia’s biggest cultural event: the Grand Opening of Naadam at the National Stadium. Watch the ceremonial arrival of the Nine White Banners, followed by speeches and a vibrant parade of soldiers, athletes and performers in historical costume. Spend the day soaking up the festival atmosphere—food stalls, folk games and proud crowds—while focusing on the headline competitions: Mongolian wrestling, traditional archery, and knuckle-bone shooting. Your guide helps with timings and viewing points so you see the best action without rushing. This evening, enjoy a Naadam Gala Dinner at Bayangol restaurant, a celebratory close to an unforgettable day.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 12

Ulaanbaatar

Head out of Ulaanbaatar to Khui Doloon Khudag, the horse-racing grounds where Mongolia’s equestrian culture takes centre stage. The races are long-distance across open steppe, with young jockeys riding fast and fearlessly—an extraordinary spectacle. The festival energy continues here with cultural performances, food stalls and displays of regional traditions. Visit a horse trainer’s camp to experience Naadam in a genuinely nomadic setting and learn how horses are raised and prepared for racing. Expect a full day outdoors with sun and wind exposure—layers, hat and water are essential—before returning to the city in the evening.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 13

Ulaanbaatar

Enjoy a relaxed morning, then head out for a final afternoon of key city sights. Start at the Zaisan Memorial, a panoramic viewpoint over Ulaanbaatar and a Soviet-era WWII monument reflecting Mongolia’s modern history. Continue to the Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum, the former residence of Mongolia’s last emperor and spiritual leader, where preserved rooms and collections—thrones, artefacts and Buddhist relics—offer a strong closing context to the journey. This evening, gather for a farewell dinner, toasting the steppe drives, Gobi landscapes and the colour of Naadam before departure tomorrow.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 14

Depart Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your onward flight. Depart Mongolia with memories of the Gobi Desert, nomadic culture, ancient monasteries and the colour of the Naadam Festival.

Meals Included: Breakfast

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, GUIDE SUPPORT & TRIP STYLE: This is a 14-day small-group overland journey timed for Mongolia’s Naadam Festival and designed to show the country’s headline landscapes—steppe, desert and granite outcrops—without rushing. Travel is by private vehicle with an experienced English-speaking guide team. Expect several long driving days and substantial off-road sections in the Gobi and central regions; road conditions and weather can affect timings, so a flexible mindset helps. Your guide handles daily briefings, comfort stops, crowd navigation during Naadam, and cultural etiquette at monasteries and sacred sites.

ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation mixes a central Ulaanbaatar hotel with ger camps and lodges en route (Bayangobi, Kharkhorin, Ongi, Gobi, Baga Gazryn Chuluu and Terelj). Ger camps are comfortable but simple, with stove-heated gers, shared bathroom blocks in many locations, and occasional generator power. Single rooms can be limited outside the city; where available, they’re usually offered with a supplement and subject to availability.

MEALS, FOOD & WATER: Meals are included as per the programme (B/L/D as stated). Traditional Mongolian diets are meat- and dairy-heavy, and there are opportunities to try local staples such as dry curd and fermented mare’s milk. In the ger camps, however, meals are generally Western-style, sometimes with an Asian influence—typically soup and salad, followed by a main course and dessert. Vegetarians are generally well catered for; if you are vegetarian or have other dietary requirements, please inform us in advance. Breakfasts vary by location (buffet or set), usually cereal, bread and possibly a hot dish. On some days, a packed lunch is provided and is often still a proper meal (though without the soup). Tea, coffee, soft drinks, beer, vodka and (most of the time) wine are available to buy at the ger camps. Snacks can be purchased in Ulaanbaatar and occasionally when driving through towns or villages. Drink sealed bottled water or water arranged by the team, and keep hydration in mind in Mongolia’s dry air.

WEATHER, SEASONS & WHAT TO PACK: This departure runs in early July, typically warm and dry with strong sun and occasional short showers—very different from Mongolia’s deep winter. Pack light layers for hot days and cooler evenings, a hat and sunglasses, SPF, and a compact waterproof. Dust is common on off-road Gobi tracks, so a buff/scarf and lens cloth are useful. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for short hikes at Bayanzag, Yol Valley, Khavtsgait and Baga Gazryn Chuluu.

WALKING, COMFORT & PRACTICALITIES: Most activity is easy to moderate: short hikes and walks, time on your feet at monasteries and museums, and full outdoor days during Naadam. Bring a small daypack for water, layers and essentials. Keep valuables on you in crowded festival areas and markets, and avoid leaving items in vehicles during stops. Power and Wi-Fi can be limited in rural camps—plan for some offline time.

MONGOLIAN VISA & ENTRY: Generally, travellers from the UK, USA, Canada and EU do not usually need a visa to enter Mongolia, but requirements can change. It is your responsibility to check current rules with the relevant embassy/consulate (including any transit countries) and to ensure your passport meets validity requirements before travel.

NAADAM FESTIVALWHAT TO EXPECT: Naadam is Mongolia’s signature national celebration and it is genuinely local—proud crowds, traditional dress, food stalls and a festival buzz that runs all day. You’ll attend the Opening Ceremony at the National Stadium and the headline competitions (wrestling, archery and knuckle-bone shooting), then travel to Khui Doloon Khudag for the long-distance horse races. Much of the viewing is outdoors with sun and wind exposure, queues can form, and timings may shift—your guide will position the group for strong sightlines and smoother movement.

PHOTOGRAPHY & CULTURAL ETIQUETTE: This tour is excellent for photography: Naadam colour, big-steppe horizons, Gobi desert light, dunes and ancient sites. Always ask before photographing individuals—especially at Naadam, in markets, and around nomadic camps. Your guide will advise on respectful behaviour at monasteries, ovoos (sacred cairns) and community settings, helping you move beyond “drive-by” images to more meaningful encounters. Bring spare memory cards, keep cameras dust-protected on off-road days, and avoid drones unless you have clear local permission.
