Phnom Penh to Luang Prabang – 11 Days
This 11-day journey links the cultural heart of Cambodia with the historic and spiritual charm of northern Laos, creating a richly varied introduction to two of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding destinations. Beginning in Phnom Penh, the tour combines royal landmarks, Khmer art and sobering modern history before continuing into the countryside for a hands-on Khmer cooking class and a stay at Smiling Gecko, an inspiring social enterprise and rural retreat. From there, travel overland to Siem Reap to explore the great temple complex of Angkor, Cambodia’s defining cultural treasure, alongside Tonle Sap’s distinctive waterside communities and traditional craft initiatives.
The journey then continues to Luang Prabang, where the pace softens and the focus shifts to temples, river life and local traditions. Highlights include a tuk-tuk city tour, a Mekong cruise to Pak Ou Caves, a Baci blessing ceremony, weaving villages and the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfalls. Altogether, this is a well-balanced journey of heritage, community and atmosphere.
EXPLORE HISTORIC PHNOM PENH: Begin in Cambodia’s capital with a revealing contrast between grandeur and remembrance. Explore the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, home to some of the country’s most important royal treasures, then visit the National Museum for its rich Khmer art collection. The day also includes Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields, offering essential insight into Cambodia’s recent past, before ending with a sunset cruise on the Mekong that brings a calmer perspective to the city.
DISCOVER ANGKOR WAT TEMPLES: Siem Reap is the gateway to Cambodia’s greatest cultural treasure: the temple complex of Angkor. Highlights include the monumental gates and carved faces of Angkor Thom, the atmospheric jungle temple of Ta Prohm, and the vast splendour of Angkor Wat itself. Together, these sites reveal the ambition, artistry and spiritual depth of the Khmer Empire. This is one of Southeast Asia’s most extraordinary archaeological landscapes and a true centrepiece of the journey.
EXPERIENCE THE SMILING GECKO COMMUNITY: This is a rural retreat connected to an inspiring social development project. Alongside a hands-on Khmer cooking class and countryside drive, this part of the itinerary offers a more personal connection to Cambodia beyond the classic monuments. Visiting the project provides insight into education, agriculture and vocational training, showing how tourism and social enterprise can work together to support local communities in meaningful and lasting ways.
DISCOVER LAOS ON THE MEKONG: The Laos section brings a gentler rhythm and a different cultural atmosphere. In Luang Prabang, discover temple architecture, morning markets and royal heritage by tuk-tuk, then cruise the Mekong to Pak Ou Caves and weaving villages before joining a traditional Baci blessing ceremony. The journey ends at Kuang Si Waterfalls, where turquoise pools and forested surroundings create one of Laos’ most beautiful natural settings. It is a graceful and memorable finish to a deeply rewarding two-country journey.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
Experience two of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding cultures on this 11-day journey through Cambodia and Laos. From Angkor and Phnom Penh to the Smiling Gecko community and Mekong life in Luang Prabang, it offers more than a standard two-country introduction. With expert guides throughout, the journey brings history, daily life and atmosphere vividly into focus.
Arrive at Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check-in. The remainder of the day is left free to rest after your flight and settle into Cambodia’s capital at an easy pace. Depending on your arrival time, you may simply enjoy the hotel facilities or take a gentle first look at the city nearby. Phnom Penh offers a compelling introduction to Cambodia, where French colonial traces, royal landmarks and a fast-changing urban rhythm sit side by side. Overnight at your hotel in Phnom Penh. Meals: Lunch and dinner under your own arrangements
La Rose Suites
The La Rose Suites boutique hotel is located in the heart of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's bustling capital. Although one of the new hotels in town, it has already established itself as likeable up-comer that is both hip and relaxed, blending both Khmer tradition with Asian hospitality. The boutique style design is inspired by the charming French Indochina architecture, while the interiors reflect the grandeur of Angkor Wat. Ideal for a relaxing stay in this vibrant city, La Rose Suites is just minutes away from many of Phnom Penh's major attractions.
Today explores Phnom Penh’s most important cultural and historical sites. Begin at the Royal Palace, one of the capital’s finest architectural landmarks, and visit its remarkable Silver Pagoda, known for its silver floor tiles, marble steps and revered Buddha images. Continue to the National Museum, home to one of the country’s most significant collections of Khmer sculpture and art. After lunch, the focus shifts to Cambodia’s more painful recent past with visits to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields, both powerful and sobering. In the late afternoon, unwind on a sunset cruise along the Mekong River, watching the changing colours of the sky and the riverbank life unfold.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning, take part in a hands-on Khmer cooking class, beginning with a visit to a local market to select fresh ingredients and learn more about the herbs, vegetables and flavours that define Cambodian cuisine. Guided by an experienced chef, prepare a selection of traditional dishes and then enjoy your own creations for lunch. Afterwards, leave the capital behind and drive into the Cambodian countryside to Farmhouse Smiling Gecko, a distinctive rural retreat connected to an inspiring social development project. After check-in, join a guided visit of the Smiling Gecko initiative, gaining insight into its work across education, agriculture and vocational training. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the peaceful setting.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Farmhouse Resort & Spa
Farmhouse Resort & Spa is a polished rural retreat in Kampong Chhnang, set within the wider Smiling Gecko campus. It pairs a peaceful countryside setting with a strong social purpose, giving the stay a character that feels both restful and distinctive.
Rooms and bungalows draw on Khmer design while providing modern comfort, with a relaxed, informal atmosphere and an easy connection to the surrounding greenery. It works particularly well as a restorative stop on a Cambodia journey.
Facilities include farm-to-table dining, a spa, swimming pools, fitness areas and chances to explore the project’s farms and community initiatives.
Those with a special interest in the Smiling Gecko project may choose an early visit to the Education Campus, when local children arrive and the school day begins. It is a rewarding opportunity to understand more fully the project’s educational mission and its wider impact on rural families. After breakfast, enjoy some time at leisure before departing for Siem Reap by road. Along the way, stop at Skun, widely known as “Spider Village”, where the lively roadside market offers unusual local snacks as well as fruit and street food. Continue with a visit to Kampong Kdei Bridge, an impressive 12th-century stone bridge dating from the reign of Jayavarman VII, before arriving in Siem Reap and checking in.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Shinta Mani Angkor
Shinta Mani Angkor is a contemporary boutique hotel, set on the southern end of Royal Palace in Siem Reap, Northwest Cambodia. Bangkok-based American designer Bill Bensley has created spaces that are serene and minimalist yet flamboyant in style, surrounded with sophisticated laid-back environments and inspired by the architecture of Angkor. The challenging design transcends a feeling of an urban resort, albeit with a new architectural language.
Today is devoted to the extraordinary temple complex of Angkor. Begin at Angkor Thom, the last great capital of the Khmer Empire, entering through the monumental South Gate and continuing to the Bayon, famous for its serene carved faces. Nearby, explore the Baphuon, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, each revealing a different aspect of Khmer royal and ceremonial life. Continue to Ta Prohm, one of Angkor’s most atmospheric temples, where giant tree roots and weathered stone remain dramatically intertwined. After lunch, visit Angkor Wat, the vast and iconic temple complex that stands as the architectural and spiritual heart of Cambodia, with its soaring towers, galleries and remarkable bas-reliefs.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning, explore life on Tonle Sap Lake with a visit to one of its distinctive waterside communities. Depending on the season, this may be Kampong Phluk, with its striking stilted houses, or Chong Kneas during the dry months, when water levels shape a different rhythm of life. In the rainy season, conditions may also allow a pirogue journey through the flooded forest. After lunch, continue to Pouk to visit the Angkor Silk Farm, where traditional silk-making techniques are preserved and local livelihoods supported through sustainable employment and training. Back in Siem Reap, visit Les Artisans d’Angkor to see Khmer craftsmanship in stone, wood, lacquer and silk, before ending with a stroll through Psar Chas, the lively Old Market.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today is free at leisure until your transfer to the airport for your onward flight to Luang Prabang. Depending on your departure time, there may be an opportunity for a relaxed morning in Siem Reap before leaving Cambodia behind. On arrival in Luang Prabang, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is left free to settle in or begin exploring independently. With its saffron-robed monks, temple rooftops, French colonial traces and calm riverside setting, Luang Prabang offers a very different atmosphere from Cambodia’s temple plains and provides a gentle introduction to the next stage of the journey.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Belmond La Residence Phou Vao
Belmond La Residence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, was the former guest house of the king. The four, two-story white stucco buildings are surrounded by gardens and pathways strewn with frangipani and bougainvillea blossoms. Set on top of the hill, it commands a widescreen view of Mount Phousi and the surging mountains beyond. Guests are met on arrival with cold lemongrass-scented towels and water by a discreetly attentive staff; the result is a hotel that feels more like a home.
Today explores Luang Prabang in an engaging and local way by tuk-tuk. Begin at the lively morning market, where residents shop for fresh produce, herbs, meats and daily essentials, offering a vivid introduction to everyday life in the city. Continue to the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum, to gain insight into Laos’ royal past, then climb Mount Phousi for wide views across the town, the Mekong and the Nam Khan rivers. Later, visit Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang’s most celebrated temple, famed for its elegant rooflines and beautiful decorative details. After lunch, cross the Mekong to Ban Chan, a pottery-making village where you can learn about traditional claywork and try shaping your own piece. End the day with sunset at Wat Phrabat Tai.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
This morning, transfer to the pier and board a shared Mekong cruise heading upstream towards the famous Pak Ou Caves. En route, stop at Ban Xang Hai, known for its traditional rice alcohol and long-standing craft traditions. Continue to Pak Ou, where thousands of Buddha images have been placed inside the limestone caves over generations, creating one of Laos’ most atmospheric pilgrimage sites. Lunch is served on board as you cruise back downriver, framed by the dramatic scenery of the Mekong. Back in Luang Prabang, visit Ban Phanom, a Lue weaving village where traditional textile techniques remain an important part of local life. Later, join a Baci ceremony in a local home, a moving Lao ritual of blessing, protection and goodwill, before returning to your hotel.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Today combines culture, craft traditions and one of Luang Prabang’s most beautiful natural settings. Begin at the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, where exhibits introduce the diverse ethnic groups of Laos through clothing, household objects and cultural artefacts. Continue to Ock Pop Tok, a respected social enterprise and textile centre set in tropical gardens beside the Mekong, where Lao weaving and handicraft traditions are thoughtfully presented. Afterwards, drive into the countryside towards Kuang Si Waterfalls, stopping at Ban Na Ouan, a Hmong village, for a brief look at local life. After lunch near the falls, visit the nearby bear sanctuary, where rescued Asiatic black bears are cared for, then spend time exploring Kuang Si’s striking turquoise pools and cascades. There may be time for a swim before returning to Luang Prabang.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Today is free at leisure until your transfer to Luang Prabang Airport for your onward journey. Depending on your flight time, there may be an opportunity for a final relaxed morning in this calm and atmospheric town—perhaps a quiet coffee, a short riverside stroll or some last-minute shopping for textiles or handicrafts. Over the past few days, Luang Prabang has offered a gentle but richly rewarding contrast to Cambodia, with its temples, river life, craft traditions and slower pace. At the appropriate time, transfer to the airport and continue to your next destination.
Meals Included: Breakfast
GROUP, SUPPORT STAFF & TRIP STYLE: This is a small-group cultural journey linking Cambodia and Laos through a mix of city touring, countryside stays, temple visits and river-based experiences. The trip combines guided sightseeing with some free time, allowing a balance between structured visits and personal exploration. You will travel with local guides in each country, supported by drivers and boat crews where required. The style is comfortable and immersive rather than luxury-led, with the emphasis on heritage, local encounters and atmosphere. The pace is generally relaxed, though there are a few fuller sightseeing days, especially around Phnom Penh, Angkor and Luang Prabang.
ACCOMMODATION, MEAL PLAN, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation is in comfortable hotels, with one distinctive countryside stay at Farmhouse Smiling Gecko, where the setting is more rural and characterful. Breakfast is included daily, with lunches and some dinners included as specified in the itinerary. Meals combine hotel breakfasts with local restaurant lunches and selected special experiences such as the Khmer cooking class. Food is generally varied and flavourful, with Cambodian and Lao cuisine offering fresh herbs, rice, vegetables, grilled meats, fish and regional specialities. Bottled or purified drinking water should be used throughout the trip, and untreated tap water should be avoided.
HEALTH, FITNESS & TERRAIN: This tour suits travellers with a normal level of fitness who are comfortable with light-to-moderate activity in warm conditions. Most visits are not strenuous, but days may include walking through temple complexes, climbing some steps, getting in and out of boats and tuk-tuks, and spending time outdoors in the heat. Angkor involves walking over uneven stone paths and around large temple sites, while Luang Prabang includes hill steps at Mount Phousi and time on foot at markets, temples and waterfalls. The tour is more cultural than physically demanding, but comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a reasonable level of mobility are important.
SPENDING MONEY, CURRENCY & TIPPING: The journey involves two countries, each with its own currency, so it is sensible to carry a mix of local cash and cards. In Cambodia, the US dollar is widely used alongside the riel, while in Laos the local currency is the kip. ATMs are generally available in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Luang Prabang, though it is still wise to carry smaller denominations for markets, drinks and incidental purchases. Personal spending will vary depending on drinks, dinners not included, souvenirs and optional activities. Tipping is customary and appreciated for good service, so travellers should budget for guides, drivers, boat crews, hotel staff and restaurant teams where appropriate.
PASSPORTS, VISAS, BAGGAGE, CLIMATE & INSURANCE: Travellers should carry a valid passport with sufficient validity beyond the end of the trip and must ensure they meet the latest entry requirements for both Cambodia and Laos. Depending on nationality, visas may be required for one or both countries. Baggage should be reasonably manageable, as the tour includes airport transfers, road journeys and an international flight between Siem Reap and Luang Prabang. The climate is generally warm to hot, often humid, with stronger sun during the day and occasional rain depending on season. Lightweight clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, insect repellent and a light waterproof layer are advisable. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential and should cover medical expenses, cancellations, delays and all included activities.
TEMPLES, BOATS & CULTURAL ETIQUETTE: This itinerary includes important religious and cultural sites in both Cambodia and Laos, so respectful dress and behaviour are essential. Shoulders and knees should be covered when visiting temples and sacred places, and shoes may need to be removed at certain sites. Several experiences also involve river or lake transport, including the Mekong sunset cruise, Tonle Sap village visit and Pak Ou cave cruise, so travellers should be comfortable getting in and out of boats. In Luang Prabang and Siem Reap especially, a calm and respectful approach enhances the experience, whether at temples, in villages or during ceremonies such as the traditional Baci blessing.
• Accommodation: Twin/double rooms on a sharing basis throughout the tour. Single room available with a supplement, subject to availability.
