Vietnam and Angkor Walking and Cycling Tour

Hanoi to Siem Reap – 13 Days

This multi-country journey begins in Vietnam, blending cultural depth with gentle, active exploration. You’ll ease into Hanoi through neighbourhood-level walks and landmark sites, then unwind on an overnight cruise among Halong’s limestone bays. Further south, Hue and Hoi An are approached through movement and local encounters—cycling along rivers and lagoons, boat crossings, village life, and relaxed time in two of Vietnam’s most atmospheric heritage settings. The pace stays purposeful but never rushed, with enough breathing space built around travel days and evenings at leisure.

The final section shifts to Cambodia, adding a strong wilderness-and-heritage finish. In Siem Reap, you trek in Phnom Kulen National Park through forest trails, sacred sites and waterfalls, then explore Angkor by bicycle—Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Angkor Wat—using quieter paths that keep the experience immersive. It’s a well-stitched itinerary for travellers who want culture with momentum: active days, meaningful local contact, and standout landscapes, supported by smooth logistics throughout.

Highlights

HANOI OLD QUARTER TOUR: MARKETS & TEMPLE OF LITERATURE: Explore Hanoi through its everyday textures rather than a checklist. Begin near Hoan Kiem Lake with an electric buggy loop through the Old Quarter, passing landmark architecture before stopping at Dong Xuan Market. Walk the elegant, tree-lined Phan Dinh Phung boulevard, pausing for pavement coffee and glimpses of the old water tower, northern gate and neighbourhood churches. Visit the Temple of Literature for a crisp introduction to Confucian influence in Vietnam. Choose your afternoon finish: back-alley lanes, railway-side communities and street markets, or the Ho Chi Minh complex, ending with an iconic bia hoi beer.

HA LONG BAY OVERNIGHT CRUISE: LIMESTONE SEASCAPES & SUNRISE TAI CHI: Trade traffic for open water as you cruise into Ha Long’s limestone karsts aboard a comfortable traditional junk. Settle into your cabin while lunch is served, then spend the afternoon on an excursion chosen to match conditions—often a cave visit in a quieter zone between Ha Long and Lan Ha, with the chance for a swim. As the light softens, join a short cooking demonstration and watch sunset colours spread across the bay. Wake early for Tai Chi on deck (or a slow morning), then enjoy brunch as the boat glides back to port—one of Vietnam’s most memorable transitions.

HUE IMPERIAL CITY: CYCLING AND RIVER CRUISING: Hue is approached with movement and intimacy: visit Tu Duc’s tomb-domain, then cycle to a riverside village to share tea with locals in a garden house. Board a boat and cruise down the Perfume River into town, then pedal along Le Loi Avenue and cross Truong Tien Bridge to the Citadel. Walk the Purple Forbidden City for a clear sense of imperial life, then pause at a café before switching pace again—an old-style rickshaw loop through the wider Imperial City, where daily life continues inside the walls. Finish with a simple, excellent home-based meal in Kim Long village.

HOI AN COUNTRYSIDE CYCLING AND BEN TRE MEKONG DELTA TOUR: Cycle Hoi An’s countryside beyond the lanterns: panoramic views from Cua Dai Bridge, a friendly rural market, then easy lanes through rice paddies, shrimp ponds and duck farms, stopping at cottage workshops such as boat-building or mat weaving. Cross the Thu Bon by traditional boat to an organic farm for a herbal foot bath and home-cooked lunch. In the south, escape the city for Ben Tre’s less-travelled Mekong—private boat, island lunch, bee farm visit, orchard cycling, tasting Sâm jelly, and a sampan glide through mangroves—ending with an insider Saigon street-food walk.

Why Asian Geographical?

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Hanoi

Arrive in Hanoi and meet your guide outside the arrivals hall for a smooth transfer into the city (around 45 minutes). Check-in is from 14:00; early check-in can be pre-booked if you land in the morning. The rest of the day is yours to ease into Vietnam’s rhythm—step out into the Old Quarter’s lanes near your hotel, browse small shops and street stalls, and get your first taste of Hanoi’s energy. Optional FastTrack arrival is available for a quicker, escorted process through immigration and baggage collection.

DAY 2

Hanoi

Start near Hoan Kiem Lake and explore Hanoi in a lively, local way. Ride an electric buggy through the Old Quarter and lake district, passing classic landmarks before stopping at Dong Xuan Market for a quick browse. Continue on foot along tree-lined Phan Dinh Phung, pausing for a pavement coffee as your guide adds context at the old water tower, the Northern Gate and Cua Bac Church. Lunch is a traditional rice meal. Afternoon brings the Temple of Literature, then choose your finale: either a back-lanes walk to street markets and railway-side neighbourhoods, or the Ho Chi Minh complex (exteriors, stilt house, One-Pillar Pagoda) finished with an iconic bia hoi.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 3

Halong Bay

Overnight cruise: Leave Hanoi mid-morning and drive through the Red River Delta towards the coast. Board your traditional junk around lunchtime, settle into your cabin and begin cruising among limestone karsts and calm bays. Lunch is served onboard as the scenery opens out. During the afternoon, join an excursion selected by the crew based on conditions—often a cave visit in a quieter area between Ha Long and Lan Ha, sometimes with time to swim. Later, watch the light change over the water, enjoy a short cooking demonstration with the chef, then sit down to dinner onboard. Fall asleep to the gentle movement of the bay.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Halong Bay

DAY 4

Hue

Ha Long Bay to Hanoi, fly to Hue. Rise early for sunrise—join a Tai Chi session on deck, or enjoy a slower morning. A light breakfast is followed by time exploring another corner of the archipelago. After checking out, take a full brunch as the boat cruises back towards port. Disembark late morning and transfer privately to Hanoi airport for your flight to Hue. On arrival, meet your local guide and continue to your hotel. The rest of the day stays deliberately open: relax after the travel, take an evening stroll, or enjoy a quiet dinner at your own pace.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 5

Hue

Hue micro-adventure: cycling, river cruise & the Citadel: Begin at Emperor Tu Duc’s tomb-domain, then switch to bicycles for a gentle ride into a village by the Perfume River. Meet locals in a garden house, share tea and stories, then cycle to the pier and cruise downstream by boat into Hue—an easy, scenic transition. Continue by bike along Le Loi Avenue, cross the Truong Tien Bridge and arrive at the Citadel for lunch in town. In the afternoon, walk through the Purple Forbidden City, then pause for a refreshment in a café. Finish with a traditional rickshaw circuit around the wider Imperial City, watching daily life unfold inside the walls, before a visit to Kim Long village for a simple, excellent home-style bite, then back to the hotel.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 6

Hoi An & Danang

Hue lagoon ride, boat crossing & onward to Hoi An. Step away from grand monuments and discover Hue’s quieter edges. Start at Thanh Toan Bridge with a sugar-cane juice while bikes are prepared, then pedal along narrow canal paths towards Chuon Lagoon. Cross stilted walkways through a fishing village surrounded by wetlands and water huts, then board a small fishing boat to learn local techniques on the lagoon. Continue cycling along the coast to a hidden restaurant behind the dunes on a pristine beach, where lunch is prepared as you unwind. In the afternoon, travel south to Hoi An via Lang Co Bay and the spectacular Hai Van Pass, stopping for photos. Arrive early evening and enjoy free time.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 7

Hoi An & Danang

Hoi An countryside by bicycle (half-day). Meet your guide at the hotel and set off by bike, leaving the lantern-lit streets behind for open country. Ride to Cua Dai Bridge for wide views over the Thu Bon River and nipa-palm mangroves, then continue to Noi Rang Market—a friendly, authentic rural market where daily life unfolds in full colour. Pedal easy, flat lanes through the delta landscape where three rivers meet, passing rice paddies, shrimp ponds and duck farms. Along the way, stop at cottage industries such as a boat-building yard or a sedge-mat weaving workshop. Around midday, cross the Thu Bon by traditional boat to an organic farm for a herbal foot bath and a generous home-cooked lunch. Return to your hotel by taxi.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Hoi An & Danang

DAY 8

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City (flight). Depending on your flight time, meet your guide and driver in the lobby and transfer to Da Nang Airport (about 45 minutes). Fly south to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s energetic commercial heart. On arrival, your guide meets you outside the terminal for the short drive into the city centre (around 35 minutes). Check in and keep the rest of the day open—perfect for a first wander, a rooftop drink, or an early night after the travel. If you prefer, your guide can suggest an easy orientation walk near the hotel and a reliable place for your first Saigon street-food tasting, tailored to your comfort level.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 9

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Ben Tre: lesser-travelled Mekong Delta paths (full-day): Leave the city behind and drive into a quieter, less-visited corner of the Mekong Delta (around 2.5 hours). Board a private boat and spend the day meeting locals and exploring the waterways that shape delta life. Visit a small local workshop, then continue to a more uncharted island for lunch at a simple guesthouse. In the afternoon, stop at a honey-bee farm, then cycle narrow island lanes through orchards and farms. Pause to learn about Sâm jelly and sample it, then switch pace again—glide by sampan through thick mangroves for a close-up look at the delta’s green corridors. Return by road to Ho Chi Minh City.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 10

Siem Reap

This morning, enjoy an “inside Saigon” walk: street-level, local and full of character. Start in District 3 at the city’s oldest café, opened in 1938, then dive into a vast street market where conical hats, spice aromas and sizzling snacks create a vivid soundtrack. Continue to Chung Cu, the working-class apartment blocks that have changed little since the 1960s, before threading into Ho Thi Ky quarter, known for its flower market and Khmer flavours. Explore deeper into District 10, then finish at one of Saigon’s best-loved street-food streets for lunch, time permitting. Later, transfer to the airport for your flight to Siem Reap. The evening is free to settle in.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

image
Siem Reap

DAY 11

Siem Reap

Phnom Kulen full-day jungle trek. Depart early for Phnom Kulen National Park (about 1.5 hours), travelling past reservoirs, villages and rice paddies. Trek roughly 18 km (around 6 hours) through forest trails and sacred sites: Aramrong Chen (linked to Jayavarman II), Damrei Krab, and Sras Damrei with its elephant statue and pond. Cool off at Angkong Cheung Chab waterfall (swimming possible), visit a bat cave, then pause for a packed lunch at Preah Kral Pagoda. After lunch, continue by vehicle to the Preah Ang Thom reclining Buddha, then see the riverbed linga carvings and another waterfall before returning to Siem Reap. Bring sun protection, insect repellent, good shoes and swimwear.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 12

Siem Reap

Angkor by bicycle: Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm & Angkor Wat. Cycle early into the Angkor Archaeological Park for a full day among Khmer masterpieces. Enter through the grand South Gate of Angkor Thom and ride shaded forest roads to the enigmatic Bayon, famous for its serene stone faces and detailed bas-reliefs. Continue through Angkor Thom to the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, then pedal to Ta Prohm, where giant roots wrap ancient stone—one of the park’s most atmospheric sites. Lunch at a local restaurant near Srah Srang lake, then spend the afternoon exploring the vast galleries and towers of Angkor Wat, absorbing its epic carvings and scale before cycling back via quiet trails and countryside lanes.

DAY 13

SIEM REAP DEPARTURE

Enjoy free time depending on your flight schedule—perfect for a relaxed breakfast, last-minute shopping, or a quiet swim. At the appropriate time, transfer to Siem Reap airport for your onward flight.

Meals Included: Breakfast

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, GUIDE SUPPORT & TRIP STYLE: This is an active 10-day small-group journey through Vietnam (with an optional Cambodia extension), designed around walking, cycling and local boating rather than long coach days. You’ll have private drivers for transfers plus experienced English-speaking guides for touring. Expect a few early starts (Ha Long Bay sunrise/Tai Chi, flight sectors, city walks) and smooth, well-timed transitions: Hanoi → Ha Long cruise → fly to Hue → overland to Hoi An → fly to Ho Chi Minh City → Mekong day trip. Traffic, weather and transport schedules can affect timings, so a flexible mindset helps; your guide manages daily briefings, comfort stops, etiquette and logistics.

ACCOMMODATION, MEALS, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation is comfortable, centrally located hotels in Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City, plus one night aboard a Ha Long Bay junk. Meals are included as per the programme (typically breakfasts daily, plus selected lunches and onboard meals). Vietnamese cuisine is fresh and varied; dietary needs can usually be accommodated with advance notice (vegetarian is straightforward; allergies must be flagged early). Drink sealed bottled water or water provided by the team; carry a refillable bottle for cycling days.

WALKING, CYCLING & PRACTICALITIES: Activity is easy to moderate, with flat cycling on backroads and island lanes (Hoi An ~30km, Mekong cycling on narrow paths) plus city walking on pavements and market lanes. Bring comfortable trainers/sandals with grip, light rain protection, sun protection, and insect repellent for the Mekong and mangroves. A small daypack is useful for water, camera, sunscreen and a light layer. On travel days, keep medication, valuables and a change of clothes accessible. If you’re not a confident cyclist, let us know—routes are gentle and support is available.

WEATHER, SEASONS & WHAT TO PACK: Vietnam varies by region. In the north (Hanoi/Ha Long), weather can be cooler and mistier in winter; central Vietnam (Hue/Hoi An) can be warm with seasonal rain; the south (Ho Chi Minh City/Mekong) is typically hotter and more humid. Pack breathable clothing, light layers, a compact waterproof jacket, and quick-dry items. A hat and sunglasses are useful year-round. For boats, pack a light layer for air-conditioned cabins and breezier decks.

MONEY, TIPPING & SHOPPING: Vietnam uses the Vietnamese dong (VND). Cards are accepted in many hotels and larger restaurants, but cash is essential for markets, small cafés and tips. ATMs are widely available in cities. Tipping is customary and appreciated for good service—especially for guides, drivers and boat crews; your guide can advise practical guidelines based on group size and local norms. Budget extra for drinks, personal shopping, and any optional add-ons (e.g., FastTrack arrival).

PASSPORTS, VISAS, FLIGHTS & TRAVEL INSURANCE: Entry rules vary by nationality and can change. For British nationals, the UK government notes you can visit Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days for tourism/business; check the entry stamp on arrival. If staying longer, or if requirements change, Vietnam’s official e-visa system provides guidance on e-visa validity (up to 90 days). For the Cambodia extension, British nationals need a visa (tourist visas are typically valid for 30 days). Flight schedules (Hanoi–Hue, Danang–Ho Chi Minh City, and Ho Chi Minh City–Siem Reap if extending) can change at short notice; names must match passports exactly for ticketing. Travel insurance is mandatory and should cover medical treatment, trip disruption, cycling and boat excursions.
