Aktau to Aktau – 8 Days
Kazakhstan Mangystau Adventure is an 8-day overland journey into one of Central Asia’s most otherworldly regions, where the Ustyurt Plateau drops into chalk cliffs, salt pans and wind-carved canyons. From Aktau on the Caspian, you travel deep into Mangystau to landscapes that feel geological in scale: the circular collapse of Zhygylgan, the scattered stone spheres of Torysh, and the cathedral-like white walls of Tuzbair and Bozzhira. Nights are spent close to the scenery in simple camps and a Kazakh yurt village, keeping you in the desert’s light, silence and big skies.
Alongside the terrain, the route explores Mangystau’s sacred heritage through its underground mosques and necropolises. Visit Sultan Epe, then the revered pilgrimage site of Beket Ata, and continue to Shopan Ata, learning the customs and stories that shape travel here. With expert local guiding, this is Kazakhstan at its wildest: remote, elemental, and unforgettable.
BOZZHIRA VALLEY VIEWPOINTS: Bozzhira is Mangystau’s signature landscape: a chalk amphitheatre of cliffs, spires and escarpments on the edge of the Ustyurt Plateau. You spend unhurried time at multiple viewpoints, chosen for light and clarity, with short walks to appreciate the scale rather than rushing between stops. The terrain feels prehistoric, yet the viewpoints are accessible with expert driving and local knowledge. Sunrise and late-afternoon colours transform the white rock into warm gold and cool grey, making this one of Kazakhstan’s most photogenic wilderness settings.
TUZBAIR SALT LAKE AND CHALK CLIFFS: Tuzbair delivers the region’s most surreal contrast: a vast salt pan spread beneath stepped chalk walls, where the horizon seems to dissolve. From the rim you look across the Ustyurt escarpment, then descend to the salt flats for a ground-level walk that brings texture, fossils and perspective into focus. In dry conditions the salt crust shines; after rain it can mirror the sky. It’s a place to slow down, take photographs, and feel the immensity of Mangystau’s open spaces.
BEKET ATA UNDERGROUND MOSQUE PILGRIMAGE: Beket Ata is a revered sacred site in Mangystau, drawing pilgrims throughout the year and holding a special place in local spiritual life. Visiting with a guide helps you understand the etiquette, the stories, and why this underground complex matters so deeply to communities across western Kazakhstan. The experience is quiet and respectful, shaped by the site’s simplicity and the surrounding desert. It adds cultural depth to a journey otherwise defined by geology, balancing wild scenery with living tradition.
TORYSH VALLEY OF BALLS AND ZHYGYLGAN CANYON: Two natural oddities capture Mangystau’s eccentric geology. Torysh, the so-called Valley of Balls, is scattered with huge stone concretions that look placed by hand, inviting slow walks and playful photography among the spheres. Zhygylgan then shifts the mood: a vast circular landslide canyon, dramatic in scale, with one edge falling towards the Caspian. Together they show how strange and varied this region can be, even within a single day’s drive.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
Kazakhstan Mangystau Adventure is for travellers who want true wilderness without roughing it unnecessarily. Expect vast horizons, surreal chalk landscapes and salt plains, nights under big skies, and a rare glimpse into Mangystau’s sacred underground mosques and nomadic hospitality. Expert guiding and tight logistics make remote places feel accessible, safe, and deeply rewarding.
Arrive in Aktau and meet your driver at the airport. Private transfer to your 4 star hotel and check in to twin rooms. The remainder of the day is free to rest after travel or take a gentle walk along the Caspian seafront. If you would like, we can suggest a relaxed first dinner and an early night ahead of tomorrow’s start. Overnight in Aktau. Breakfast is included.
After breakfast, depart Aktau for Zhygylgan, a vast circular landslide canyon around 10 km across, with one edge dropping towards the sea. Continue to the Kenty Baba necropolis, then visit the Sultan Epe underground mosque, a historic complex with a freshwater well linked to local healing legends. In the afternoon, explore Torysh, the valley of stone concretions scattered with huge spherical boulders in strange natural forms. Arrive at the Kogez Ethno-Aul yurt camp for an introduction to Kazakh hospitality and yurt traditions.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Yurt Camp
Breakfast at camp, then drive to Mount Sherkala, a dramatic remnant mountain that resembles a giant yurt from key viewpoints. Continue into the Shomanay and Airakty area for a scenic exploration of the Valley of Castles, where chalk and limestone towers rise like fortress walls and the colours shift as the day changes. Look for scratched drawings on chalk blocks, sometimes described as steppe symphonies. Later, walk through the chalk canyon of Zhylshy, shaped by wind and water into honeycombs, grottos, and channels. Return to Kogez Ethno-Aul for a second night in yurts.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Yurt Camp
After breakfast, travel into the Karatau ridge area, known as the black mountains, to walk among multi coloured clay canyons where each bend reveals new textures and tones. Continue to the Black Canyon, a striking contrast of darker rock formations. Later, reach the Tuzbair viewpoint from the top of the cliff, looking over the Ustyurt Plateau escarpment and the vast salt marsh below. Stop at a site known for fossilised shark teeth, then descend to Tuzbair at the bottom of the salt lake for an on foot exploration. Overnight camping in the Tuzbair area.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Yurt Camp
After breakfast, depart Tuzbair and travel to the Beket Ata underground mosque, one of Mangystau’s most revered pilgrimage sites. Learn about Beket Ata’s place in regional Islamic tradition, and the rituals observed here as pilgrims come to reflect and pray. Continue onwards to the Bozzhira Valley, a spectacular section of the Ustyurt Plateau defined by chalk cliffs, sculpted spires, and wide open horizons. Spend time taking in the scale of the landscape and walking short sections for viewpoints and photography, timed to the best light. Overnight camping in the Bozzhira area.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Begin with further exploration of Bozzhira, focusing on viewpoints from the top of the cliff for sweeping panoramas over chalk formations and the plateau’s edge. Continue to Bokty Mountain, a solitary pyramid shaped rise on the flat takyr plain, climbing to viewpoints where conditions allow. In the afternoon, reach Kyzylkup, famed for its blurred chalk skylines banded with red layers, a palette that stands out even in Mangystau. Time for short walks and photography among the folds and stripes before you settle in for the night. Overnight camping in the Kyzylkup area.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, travel to the Shopan Ata underground mosque, linked by legend to the disciples of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi. Explore the complex and its surrounding necropolises, learning about local customs and the traditional rituals observed at holy sites. Continue through the Tyiesu sandy dunes for a scenic drive and a short stop for photographs near Senek village, then visit the Senek necropolis dating from the 17th to 20th centuries. In the afternoon, return to Aktau and check in to your 4 star hotel in twin rooms. Evening at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Breakfast at the hotel, then transfer to Aktau airport for your onward flight. End of services.
GROUP, SUPPORT STAFF & TRIP STYLE: This is a small-group overland adventure in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region, led by an experienced local Group Leader and supported by a professional driver (with local site guiding where required). The focus is on remote desert landscapes and sacred sites rather than long hikes: expect easy to moderate walking most days, typically short, uneven walks on chalk, clay, gravel and salt flats, plus several early starts and long driving days on rough tracks. In Mangystau, plans can change due to wind, rain on the salt pans, track conditions, or access restrictions at holy sites, so a flexible mindset is important. Your leader manages timings, logistics, safety briefings, cultural etiquette at underground mosques, and viewpoint selection for the best light and visibility.
ACCOMMODATION, MEAL PLAN, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation combines a comfortable 4-star hotel in Aktau (start and end) with a yurt night at Ethno-Aul Kogez and simple wilderness camping in remote areas such as Tuzbair and Bozzhira. Standards vary significantly outside Aktau: facilities are basic, charging can be limited, and washing/toilet arrangements are simple and location-dependent. Rooms are typically twin-share in Aktau; yurts and camp set-ups are on a shared basis. Meals are provided as per the day-to-day programme and are practical, hearty and designed around what can be reliably sourced and prepared in remote locations. Dietary choice can be limited; if you have allergies or a strict diet, tell us before booking. For health, drink only sealed bottled water or purified water provided by the team.
HEALTH, FITNESS & TERRAIN: This trip does not involve high altitude, but the environment can be physically demanding in other ways: heat, wind, dust, and bright reflected light on chalk and salt can be tiring. A steady level of everyday fitness is sufficient, but you should be comfortable walking on uneven surfaces with occasional short ascents/descents at viewpoints. Sun protection is essential (hat, sunglasses, high SPF, lip balm) and a light windproof layer is useful year-round. Footwear should have good grip for loose gravel, chalk edges and salt crust. Carry a small daypack for water, snacks, camera, and layers, and bring personal medication in original packaging.
SPENDING MONEY, CURRENCY & TIPPING: Kazakhstan’s currency is the tenge (KZT). In Aktau you will find ATMs and card payments are generally possible, but once you leave the city you should assume cash is required and services are limited. Carry a sensible float for drinks, snacks, personal shopping and incidental expenses, plus a small contingency. Tipping is customary and appreciated for the driver, Group Leader and any local guides; your Group Leader can advise a fair guideline based on group size and local norms. Keep small notes for ease.
PASSPORTS, VISAS, BAGGAGE, CLIMATE & INSURANCE: Passport and visa rules depend on nationality; for British travellers, Kazakhstan allows visa-free entry for short stays, and this 8-day itinerary falls within the allowance. Your passport should meet current entry validity requirements and have spare blank pages. Pack light and use soft-sided luggage where possible, as vehicle space is limited on overland routes; keep essentials accessible (torch/headlamp, power bank, wet wipes, and a warm evening layer). Our small-group departures operate only in the best seasons for Mangystau, and we also publish detailed guidance on when to travel on our website. Travel insurance is mandatory and should cover medical treatment, trip disruption, and remote-area travel; we recommend including cover for delays or route changes due to weather or track conditions.
