Almaty to Astana – 10 Days
Kazakhstan Mountains and Deserts Explorer is a 10-day small-group journey that shows how wildly diverse the country is in a single, well-paced route. Begin in Almaty with insider-guided city time, then escape into the Trans-Ili Alatau for mountain panoramas at Medeo and Shymbulak. From there, travel to Altyn Emel National Park for the Singing Dune and the extraordinary Aktau and Katutau ranges, where chalk layers and frozen lava create a natural geology museum on a desert scale.
The second half shifts to Kazakhstan’s most photogenic water-and-rock landscapes: the Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy’s submerged forest, followed by a walk through Charyn Canyon’s Valley of Castles. A day at Oi-Qaragai and a soak at Alma-Arasan add comfort and recovery without losing the sense of adventure. Finish with a cultural immersion at a Kazakh ethno village and a seamless flight to Astana for an easy departure.
ALTYN EMEL NATIONAL PARK SINGING DUNE: Few places feel as elemental as the Singing Dune: a steep mountain of clean quartz sand that can resonate with a deep, musical hum when the surface shifts in dry conditions. You visit at the best time of day for light and atmosphere, with space to climb, photograph, and take in the silence of the Ili Valley. It is a rare natural phenomenon found in only a handful of places worldwide, and it captures Kazakhstan’s desert character in one unforgettable scene. The experience is not just visual; it is sensory, with wind, scale and sound combining to make the landscape feel alive.
KOLSAI LAKES AND KAINDY SUNKEN FOREST: This is Kazakhstan’s most striking alpine contrast: clear mountain lakes framed by pine forest and high ridgelines, reached without strenuous trekking. At Kolsai, you have time for an easy shoreline walk and relaxed photography, with the option to boat when conditions allow. Kaindy adds the twist: a lake formed after an earthquake, where the submerged trunks of a conifer forest rise through the water in the gorge. It is eerie, beautiful and completely distinctive, especially in calm weather when reflections sharpen the scene. Together, the two lakes deliver high-impact nature with a comfortable pace.
CHARYN CANYON VALLEY OF CASTLES WALK: Charyn’s red rock formations bring a Grand Canyon feel to southeast Kazakhstan, with a walk that delivers maximum drama for moderate effort. The Valley of Castles is the star: a two-kilometre corridor of sculpted towers and buttresses, carved over millions of years into shapes that shift with every turn. You descend into the canyon for close-up perspective, then reach the river at the bottom for a breather and a snack before heading back. This is one of the most photogenic landscapes on the route, particularly when the sun sits low and the rock glows.
ALMATY MOUNTAIN EXPERIENCES AND HOT SPRINGS: Almaty sits right against the Trans-Ili Alatau, so you can combine real mountain scenery with city comfort. Ride up above the skyline for wide views, then head to high-altitude viewpoints and mountain resorts for crisp air and open panoramas. Ayusai Gorge adds a refreshing nature walk with waterfalls and forest, while Alma-Arasan delivers the reward: outdoor thermal pools tucked into a dramatic valley, with spruce-covered slopes and a fast river beside you. It is the perfect balance of activity and recovery, keeping the trip adventurous without feeling relentless.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
This 10-day small-group journey is ideal for travellers who want big landscapes with comfort built in. Expect dramatic contrasts, from desert geology to mountain air, with time to walk, photograph and properly absorb each place. Expert guiding and well-planned logistics keep remote experiences smooth, while hot springs, resort downtime and thoughtful pacing make it feel like a holiday, not an endurance test.
Arrive in Almaty where your guide and driver meet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel. After time to refresh, begin a late-morning city tour introducing Kazakhstan’s cultural capital. Walk through Panfilov Park and see the striking Ascension Cathedral, famously built from wood with minimal metal fittings, then continue to Republic Square and the Central State Museum for context on the country’s history and identity. In the afternoon, ride the cable car to Kok-Tobe for sweeping views over Almaty as the city lights come on. Return to the hotel for overnight.
InterContinental Almaty
InterContinental Almaty is a long-established five-star hotel in a prime central setting, overlooking Republic Square and close to several of the city’s main cultural and commercial landmarks. It has the feel of a classic international hotel rather than a boutique property, with a formal style, generous public areas, and wide mountain or city views from many rooms.
The rooms and suites are elegant and comfortably appointed, in a style that is more timeless than trend-driven. It works well for both touring stopovers and longer city stays, especially for clients who value space, service, and a recognised international brand. Club-level rooms add extra comfort for those wanting lounge access.
Facilities are extensive, with a spa, pool, fitness centre, several dining venues, bars, and substantial meeting space. Overall, it suits travellers seeking a polished full-service base in Almaty, it remains one of the city’s best-known luxury addresses.
This morning you head into the mountains above Almaty for a classic trio of experiences. Start at Medeo Gorge, home to the world-famous high-altitude skating rink, then continue by cable car up to Shymbulak Mountain Resort, reaching around 3,200 metres for crisp air and wide views across the Tien Shan ridgelines. Later, visit Sunkar Falconry to watch a traditional hunting-bird demonstration and learn how raptors have long been trained on the steppe and in the mountains. Return to Almaty in the evening with time to relax and enjoy the city’s cafés and dining. Overnight in Almaty.

Depart early for Altyn Emel National Park, driving east towards Basshi village (around four hours). Check in to a local guesthouse and have lunch, then set out for the park’s geological highlights. Explore the chalky Aktau Mountains, layered in whites and reds and shaped into canyons and gullies that feel like an open-air museum. The formations were once seabed, and the area is known for rare fossil finds and plant imprints. Continue to the volcanic Katutau Mountains, where frozen lava has formed strange sculptural shapes across the desert slopes. Pause by the historic 300-year-old willow on route. Return to Basshi for dinner and overnight.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Aigai Kum Guesthouse – Altyn-Emel
Aigai Kum Guesthouse is a simple, locally run base in Basshi village, the main gateway to Altyn-Emel National Park. This is not a hotel chosen for luxury or atmosphere; its value lies in location and practicality, particularly for travellers visiting the Singing Dune, Aktau and Katutau, and other remote park highlights. In such a sparsely developed area, it works well as an honest and useful overnight stop within a nature-led itinerary.
Accommodation is basic but comfortable enough for short stays, with clean rooms and a straightforward guesthouse feel. Sources indicate a small-scale property, with simple dining and home-style hospitality rather than extensive facilities. That makes it best suited to travellers who understand the remoteness of the setting and are happy to trade polish for access.
Overall, Aigai Kum is best presented as a functional park guesthouse rather than a destination hotel.
After breakfast, travel deeper into Altyn Emel to visit the Singing Dune, a steep mountain of clean quartz sand that can “hum” when dry grains slide and vibrate in the wind. It’s a rare natural phenomenon seen in only a handful of places worldwide, and the dune’s scale is impressive in the wide Ili Valley landscape. Afterwards, begin the overland journey to the Kolsai Lakes region (around four and a half hours). Arrive in Saty village and settle into your guesthouse. The evening is for a simple dinner, fresh mountain air, and preparation for tomorrow’s lake exploration. Overnight in Saty.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Hotel Kolsay Grand
Kolsay Prestige – Kolsai Lakes
Hotel Kolsay Grand is a simple modern hotel in Saty village, used as a base for visiting the Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy Lake. It suits walkers and road-trippers who prioritise location over luxury.
Rooms are basic but comfortable, with heating, Wi-Fi and practical bathrooms, giving a straightforward place to rest after hikes and day trips.
On-site dining keeps meals easy to arrange, while staff can often help with local drivers or guidance, making short Saty and Kolsai stays simple to organise.
Kolsay Prestige is a small regional hotel near the Kolsai Lakes area, used mainly as a practical overnight base for travellers exploring Kolsai, Kaindy and the surrounding mountain scenery. It is not a luxury property; the main appeal lies in its location and convenience rather than in extensive facilities. In this part of Kazakhstan, accommodation is generally simple, so it is best presented as a comfortable touring stop within a nature-focused itinerary.
Rooms are straightforward and modern in feel, with private bathrooms, mountain views and practical comforts. Listings indicate features such as Wi-Fi, air conditioning and televisions, making it suitable for short stays after long drives or excursions.
The hotel also appears to offer an on-site restaurant, breakfast, parking and 24-hour reception. Overall, it is a functional and convenient base for visiting one of southeastern Kazakhstan’s most scenic regions.
Today is dedicated to two of southeast Kazakhstan’s most memorable mountain lakes. Begin at Kolsai, a system of alpine lakes in the northern Tien Shan. Visit the lowest lake for an easy lakeside walk, with time to enjoy the reflections and pine-fringed shore; boating may be possible depending on conditions. After lunch or lunch boxes, continue to Kaindy Lake, formed after the 1911 earthquake created a natural dam. The lake’s signature sight is its submerged conifer forest, with pale trunks rising through clear water in the gorge. Optionally take a short boat ride for closer views. Return to your guesthouse in Saty for dinner and overnight.
Meals Included: Breakfast
After breakfast, depart Saty village and drive towards Charyn National Park. Arrive at Charyn Canyon, an extraordinary landscape of red sedimentary rock shaped by wind and water over millions of years. Walk into the canyon to its most dramatic section, the Valley of Castles, where tower-like formations line a narrow corridor for around two kilometres. Continue down to the Charyn River for a rest and a snack beside the water before returning the same way. An optional UAZ ride along the canyon floor can be arranged, depending on access and conditions. In the afternoon, drive back to Almaty (around three hours), check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening. Overnight in Almaty.

This is a lighter day designed for flexibility and downtime between longer touring days. Spend the day at leisure enjoying the mountain setting, taking gentle walks, or using the resort facilities. Options can include spa time and wellness treatments, or seasonal activities such as skiing, snow tubing, or electric snowmobiles. The resort’s setting delivers fresh air, wide forested views and a change of pace from city touring. Later, transfer back to Almaty and settle in for the evening. Overnight in Almaty.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Today combines a short nature walk with a restorative soak in the mountains. After breakfast, meet your guide and driver and head to Ayusai Gorge, also known as Bear Gorge, a favourite local valley in the Zailiyskiy Alatau. Enjoy time on foot along the river, with chances to see waterfalls, spruce forest, and clear mountain streams. Continue onwards to Alma-Arasan, a picturesque gorge at around 1,780 metres, with a health zone of wooden pools filled with hot and cold thermal water. The setting is dramatic, with steep forested slopes on one side and a rushing river on the other. Soak, relax, then return to Almaty for overnight.
Meals Included: Breakfast
After breakfast, drive about an hour to the Huns Ethno Village near Talgar, considered one of Kazakhstan’s first ethnographic auls. The experience is hands-on and fun: learn about Kazakh traditions, join a masterclass making bauyrsaks, and explore cultural activities available on site. Depending on season and interest, you may try horseback riding, archery, or traditional games. Lunch is included at the ethno village. Return to Almaty and transfer to the airport for your flight to Astana. On arrival, meet your guide and driver and transfer to your hotel to check in. The evening is free to settle in and rest. Overnight in Astana.

Meals Included: Breakfast
GROUP, SUPPORT STAFF & TRIP STYLE: This is a 10-day small-group Kazakhstan journey combining city culture, national parks and mountain landscapes, led by an experienced local Group Leader and supported by a driver (with local guides where required). The pace is easy to moderate, built around short walks and viewpoint time rather than long hikes, but several days involve longer drives between regions and early starts to make the most of light and quieter conditions. Terrain is mixed: paved roads around Almaty and Astana, and park roads/tracks in Altyn Emel and the Kolsai area. Weather, roadworks and seasonal access can affect timings, so flexibility is important. Your leader manages logistics, safety briefings, cultural etiquette and day-to-day decisions to keep the trip smooth and enjoyable.
ACCOMMODATION, MEAL PLAN, FOOD & WATER: Expect a mix of comfortable hotels in Almaty and Astana and simple, local guesthouse stays in rural areas such as Basshi (Altyn Emel) and Saty (Kolsai). Standards vary outside the cities and facilities can be more basic, with occasional limitations on Wi-Fi, hot water and room configuration. Rooms are typically twin-share; single rooms may be available with a supplement, subject to availability. Meals are included as stated in the day-by-day programme (B/L/D). Food is generally hearty Kazakh and international-style fare in the cities, and simpler home-style cooking in village guesthouses. Vegetarian options are usually possible; stricter diets and allergies should be advised in advance as choice can be limited in remote areas. Drink only sealed bottled water or purified water provided by the team.
HEALTH, FITNESS, ALTITUDE & TERRAIN: This is not a high-altitude expedition, but you will reach higher viewpoints by cable car (for example at Shymbulak around 3,200 metres), where some travellers may feel mild shortness of breath. Most walks are short and non-technical, but you should be comfortable on uneven ground, loose gravel and occasional steeper paths at places like Charyn Canyon and lake trails. Pack layers: temperatures can swing from warm afternoons to cool evenings, especially near the lakes and in the mountains. Sun protection is important year-round (hat, sunglasses, high SPF), and a light waterproof/windproof layer is recommended. Bring personal medication in original packaging, plus blister plasters and a small daypack for water and essentials.
SPENDING MONEY, CURRENCY & TIPPING: Kazakhstan’s currency is the tenge (KZT). Cards are commonly accepted in Almaty and Astana, but cash is useful for smaller purchases and in rural areas where payment options can be limited. Carry a sensible float for drinks, snacks, personal shopping and optional activities. Tipping is customary and appreciated for the Group Leader, driver and any local guides; your leader can advise an appropriate guideline based on group size and local norms. Keep small notes for convenience.
PASSPORTS, VISAS, BAGGAGE, CLIMATE & INSURANCE: Passport and visa requirements vary by nationality; you are responsible for holding the correct documents and meeting entry conditions. Our small-group departures operate only during the most suitable seasons for this route, and we publish further guidance on when to travel on our website. Pack light: vehicle space can be limited on overland days, and soft-sided luggage is easiest to handle. Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover medical treatment, trip disruption and all included activities; if you plan optional activities (for example boating), ensure your policy covers these as well. Excess baggage fees and costs arising from airline schedule changes remain your responsibility.
• Accommodation: Hotels in Almaty and Astana plus guesthouse stays in rural areas (e.g., Basshi and Saty), in twin/double rooms on a sharing basis. Single room available with a supplement, subject to availability (more limited outside the cities).
• Meals: As specified day-by-day (B/L/D). Breakfast is included daily; other meals are included only where stated in the programme (e.g., lunch in the ethno village).
• Transport: All ground transport as listed in the itinerary, including airport transfers, city touring and overland transfers between regions.
• Included visits & activities: All activities and entrance fees explicitly named as included in the day-by-day programme (including cable cars and resort visits where stated).
• Guiding: Experienced local Group Leader/guide throughout the tour, with local guides where required.
• Domestic flight: Almaty to Astana flight on Day 9 (including airport transfers at both ends), as per the programme.
• Transfers: Group airport transfers aligned to the itinerary’s arrival/departure schedule.
• Safety & operations: Vetted suppliers and on-tour operational support.
• International flights: We can arrange your international flights. In most cases, you won’t be asked to pay for flights until your tour is confirmed. If a particular fare requires earlier ticketing, we’ll advise you in advance.
• Additional domestic flights: Only the Almaty–Astana flight listed under “What’s included” is included. Any other flights are charged separately. Please note domestic baggage allowances can be lower than on international services.
• Visas & formalities: Visas, permits and any entry/exit, border or local fees not explicitly stated as included.
• Travel insurance: Mandatory for adventure trips and strongly recommended for all travel. Your policy should cover medical treatment, trip disruption and all included activities.
• Health requirements: Vaccinations, health tests and any required medical screening or documentation.
• Optional extras: Optional activities and upgrades not stated as included (e.g., boating at Kolsai/Kaindy where offered, resort spa treatments, additional resort activities).
• Additional meals & drinks: Meals and drinks not listed in the itinerary (including bottled water and alcohol outside included meals).
• Personal expenses: Laundry, minibar, phone calls, spa treatments, souvenirs and similar items.
