Dwarika's Kathmandu – Heritage Luxury in Nepal

The Dwarika’s Hotel is a beautiful hybrid of a museum and a boutique hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal. When we arrived at the Dwarika’s Hotel, it all appeared a bit strange in the beginning; handmade brick walls and wooden carvings. But, those wooden carvings, we were told were rescued by its owner, Dwarika Das Shrestha over 40 years. And then it all fell into place; this isn’t just a unique hotel, it’s a unique heritage hotel built with a dream.

Dwarika Hotel has 87 rooms and suites, each individually decorated. These are grouped in four room categories from the lead in Heritage Deluxe Rooms to the expansive Royal Suite. All rooms are furnished with luxury textiles embroidered in typical Nepali designs. An assortment of menus are on offer in the hotel’s three restaurants. At Krishnarpan, Dwarika’s chefs use local cooking techniques to serve authentic Nepali cuisine. There is also a Japanese restaurant, Makos and an all-day dining restaurant.

In the middle of the Dwarika’s Hotel, the exquisitely decorated courtyard is the real jewel with trees, birds and flowers, surrounded with clusters of traditional Newari buildings. Candles and lamps light the way in the evening and a sitting area by the pool, designed to reflect the grandeur of the 12th century Malla Dynasty baths. The atmosphere is like a slice of old Kathmandu and staying in a Newari style palace with exquisite wood carvings everywhere you look.

Stay The Dwarika’s Hotel Kathmandu has 86 rooms and suites. All rooms are individually designed using local materials, including pottery, slate and brass. The lead in Heritage and Junior Suites remain true to the earthy living and captures the essence of traditional life in the valley. The spacious Executive Suites come with a luxurious open plan bathroom. The enormous Royal Suite, set over 3 floors, takes its architectural inspiration from the private abodes of the Malla Kings of Kathmandu.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at the Dwarika’s Hotel, Nepal, but there are no specialist facilities available. However, babysitting can be arranged, if requested.

Dine The Dwarika’s Hotel has three restaurants including Krishnarpan specialising in Nepali cuisine, reminiscent of the ritual feasts enjoyed by the Kathmandu Valley's Newari community. Mako, offers traditional Japanese food served in a warm and stylish setting. Located in the hotel's spacious courtyard, Toran, caters for western tastes. And, the Fusion Bar, open late into the night, offers Nepali barbeque on Friday evenings.

Relax The Dwarika’s Spa is a sanctuary for healing and purification. It offers an experience modelled upon the ancient traditions of care and respect that have developed in the Himalayan region over several millennia. Join a complimentary yoga class ever morning and use the Gymnasium open all day. The swimming pool replicates 12th century royal baths, complete with intricately carved stone spouts.

Experience Dwarika's was inspired by one man, Dwarika Das Shrestha, who saw some ancient carvings being burnt as firewood. This became a passion to collect as much as he could from being burnt and preserve Nepal's Newari tradition of exquisite and finely detailed wood carvings. In 1988, he brought it all together, incorporating his vast collection into a modern hotel. Today, Dwarika's house has a collection of artefacts from the 14th century onwards and has won awards for the preservation of Nepalese heritage in the Kathmandu Valley.

Location The Dwarikas Hotel is located just about 2 km from Tribhuvan International Airport and within a walking distance from the most sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath. The hotel is about 15-minutes from Kathmandu Durbat Square and 20-minutes from the markets and restaurants of Thamel. Altitude: 1,323 metres.

Getting There Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport is connected with major airline carriers. Alternatively, you can fly to Delhi or Bangkok and then take a short flight to Kathmandu. Dwarikas Hotel is about 5-6 minutes’ drive from the airport.

When to go Nepal like the rest of the Gangetic plains has four seasons. Autumn and spring are the two most favourable seasons for visiting Nepal. The Spring (March to May) is good for treks when forests are full of rhododendrons in bloom. The heat wave runs through May until monsoon arrives in mid-June and stays until August. But in September, when the rains stop, the weather is balmy, the air is crip and the sky is clear; it is the perfect time to visit Nepal.
