Toshogu Shrine
Nikko's most famous attraction, the Toshogu Shrine, is an architectural masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The shrine features intricate wood carvings, gold leaf decorations, and a stunning pagoda. Among its many remarkable elements is the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" carving of the three wise monkeys, which has become a symbol of the shrine.
Scenic Lake
Nikko National Park encompasses beautiful forests, lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs. One of the park's most famous destinations is Lake Chuzenji, a scenic lake formed by the eruption of Mount Nantai thousands of years ago. The park also boasts the impressive Kegon Falls, one of Japan's highest waterfalls, which cascades 97 meters into a gorge below. Visitors can take a scenic hike, enjoy a boat cruise on the lake, or relax in one of the area's hot springs.
Nature Walk
The Kanmangafuchi Abyss is a serene riverside walk featuring a row of approximately 70 stone Jizo statues, known as "Bake Jizo" or "Ghost Jizo." These statues represent the Buddhist bodhisattva Jizo, who is believed to protect travellers and children. Legend has it that the number of statues changes each time they are counted, making it impossible to know their exact count.
Dragon’s Head Waterfall
The Ryuzu Waterfall, or "Dragon's Head Waterfall," is located at the northern end of Lake Chuzenji. The waterfall's name comes from the shape of its twin cascades, which resemble a dragon's head. Close to the waterfall is the beautiful Senjogahara Marshland, a popular destination for birdwatching and nature walks. The walking trails offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape and seasonal foliage.
Edo Wonderland
Step back in time at Edo Wonderland, a cultural theme park that recreates the Edo period of Japan (1603-1868). The park features traditional architecture, live performances, and costumed characters, providing an immersive experience of daily life during this historical era. Visitors can dress in period costumes, participate in hands-on activities, and enjoy traditional food.
Sacred Bridge
The Shinkyo Bridge, or "Sacred Bridge," is a beautiful vermilion-lacquered wooden bridge that spans the Daiya River in Nikko. The bridge is part of the Futarasan Shrine and is considered one of Japan's finest. According to legend, it was built by the Shinto god Jinja-Daiou to help a priest cross the river. The bridge's striking colour and elegant design create a picturesque sight, especially during autumn when the surrounding trees display vibrant foliage.
