Amanbagh – Tranquil Resort in Rajasthan, India

Amanbagh is a modern maharajah’s palace, set near the town of Alwar about two hours drive outside the fabled Indian city of Jaipur. Situated on what was once the parched corner of the Rajastani desert that served as camping grounds for royal tiger hunts, it is now a lush oasis with marble pools and surrounded by the Aravalli Hills. And yet, this modern-day palace, humbly pays homage to the traditional architecture and design that has prevailed throughout its past.

There are 54 sandstone haveli-style structures at Amanbagh, each with either private courtyards, rooftop terraces or verdant little gardens. Starting at nearby 80 sqm, these are spacious but pool pavilions are like palaces with private gardens, scalloped archways and decadent marble bathrooms. Dining options include royal Rajasthani cuisine with western favourites served in an elegant dining room or al fresco on the terrace in the cool breeze from the surrounding hills.

Experience Amanbagh’s highlights with an open jeep safari accompanied by a nature guide to the Sariska National Park and see wildlife including tigers and over 200 bird species that flock here to the edge of the Sariska jungle. Nearby sites include the 16th-city of Bhahgargh and the lakes of Somsagar and Mansarovar. Other activities include village tours, meditation by a lake and a ‘Sunset Cow Dust Tour’. For relaxation there is a marble swimming pool and a beautiful garden to relax.

Stay Amanbagh features 39 suites, including 15 Pool Pavilions. All of the suites have king-size beds, private terraces, vaulted ceilings and enormous bathtubs carved from a single slab of Udaipur green marble. Suites are differentiated with either views of a courtyard or a garden, or a spacious terrace on the upper level with views of the pool, gardens or the river. There are 15 private one-bedroom pavilions, each with a personal pool and garden outside and spacious bathroom.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Amanbagh, but there are no specific facilities available for children, as the hotel is designed more for adult guests. However, babysitting can be arranged upon request.

Dine The main Amanbagh restaurant, located on the ground floor of the main building, provides a regal atmosphere beneath its double-height ceiling. The menu’s focus is seasonal Indian and Western dishes prepared with fresh ingredients sourced from its own organic kitchen gardens. Meals can be taken both indoors or al fresco on the second-floor terrace, in the cool evening breeze or a starlit sky. Enjoy fine spirits at the Salon Bar, a cosy place to relax and unwind.

Relax Facilities at the Amanbagh include a swimming pool and a Spa, with a team of highly-skilled therapists that provide a range of therapies as well as facials, massages, scrubs and traditional henna art as well as Yoga and meditation classes. There is also a lounge, library and a boutique selling a great selection of the region’s silverware, jewellery, textiles and fashion.

Experience Safari tour at the Amanbagh start early in the morning and drive to the personal hunting ground of the Maharajah of Alwar in Sariska, a 765 sq km sanctuary and home to a wide range of wild animals including tigers and 200 variety of birds. Wildlife includes leopards, panthers, wildcats, neelgai (blue bull) antelope, various types of deer and macaque monkeys. Also, visit lakes of Somsagar and Mansarovar and try Camel Polo, with no equestrian (or Camel riding) experience required.
