Phum Baitang

A luxurious and elegant hideaway, Phum Baitang is set on the southern end of Siem Reap, in Northwestern Cambodia. Owned by French fashion entrepreneur Roger Zannier, who holds the licences for Kenzo Kids and Junior Gaultier, the hotel has a strong local feel that echoes its immediate environment. Set within 20-acres of lush jungle, lemongrass, and paddy fields hidden in the Cambodian countryside, the hotel is just 20 minutes from the Angkor Archaeological Park.

Designed by the Paris architecture firm AW2, Phum Baitang’s 45 independent villas re-create the traditional houses that farmers live in. Step inside and you will be awed by its tasteful splurge in utmost simplicity. Each villa is dressed in fine cottons and crumpled silk, plush beds with antique carved headboards and handmade wooden furniture. Rooms are studded with pottery jars and lantern-style lighting while spacious bathrooms have rough stone sinks and deep egg-shaped baths.

There are two restaurants at the Phum Baitang, one of which is set in the original 100-year-old farmhouse and modelled after a local food market, while the other restaurant offers a fusion of international cuisine. Spend the day exploring the 12th-century Angkor ruins before returning to the staggeringly beautiful spa for ultimate relaxation. Run by a delightfully camp Filipino named Mariano Jr, it uses organic coconut milk and local moringa oil - 'the most expensive oil in the world'.

Stay Phum Baitang features 45 private villas, grouped in just two categories; Terrace Villas or Pool Villas. Each is a sanctuary on stilts with thatched roofs and furnished with extensive use of reclaimed wood, plush soft beds draped in fine linen, handpicked furniture and wonderfully spacious bathrooms with egg-shaped baths carved from local stone. Terrace Villas overlook the rice and lemongrass fields while the Pool Villas have a refreshing plunge pool and a low-slung sala on the grounds.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at the Phum Baitang. There is a Kids' Club offering a variety of games and activities − including arts and crafts, puzzle games, water activities and cooking classes. Children can also take part in an Angkor discovery tour and in rice-harvesting activities with fully-trained staff who will ensure that children have an unforgettable experience.

Dine Guests have a choice of two restaurants at the Phum Baitang Resort. Bay Phsar with views over the rice paddies offers a local market setting, where guests can select their own ingredients. The other, Hang Bay Restaurant serves a fusion of cultural cuisine, from the freshest seafood to the finest steaks. There is also a Cigar & Cocktail Lounge whose wine list includes Roger Zannier's own vintages from his estates in the South of France and Portugal's Douro Valley.

Relax Begin your day with a yoga session followed by a power breakfast. In the lush gardens lies the infinity pool where you can enjoy the constant tropical soundtrack, Cambodian sun and the laid-back approach to life. For ultimate relaxation visit Phum Baitang’s Spa Temple, has seven treatment rooms – two are for couples – housed in wooden pavilions amid luxuriant tropical foliage. There is also a sauna, steam room, relaxation area and a fully-equipped fitness room.

Experience The main reason, guests come to stay at the Phum Baitang is to marvel at the sprawling complex of temples at the Angkor Archaeological Park. The hotel has an efficient concierge and guest assistant to help you plan your Angkor tour. Other visits include floating villages on nearby Tonle Sap Lake and the Cambodia Land Mine Museum and School. Enroute, stop by the sophisticated Chanrey Tree on the banks of the Siem Reap River, which has a gorgeous open-air dining room in its garden.

Location Located just 15 minutes from Siem Reap in Cambodia.

Getting there Phum Baitang is a 15 minute drive from Siep Ream International Airport.

When to go Cambodia is hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May and the wettest months are September and October. It is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms. November is a fantastic month to visit Cambodia as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water.
