Hanoi to Siem – 14 Days
This 14-day small-group journey links the cultural and scenic highlights of Vietnam with the great heritage sites of Cambodia, creating a varied introduction to two of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding destinations. Beginning in Hanoi, the route combines the capital’s street life with an overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay, then continues through imperial Hue, atmospheric Hoi An and dynamic Ho Chi Minh City. Throughout, our expert guides add context and insight, bringing each place to life through its history, architecture, food culture and everyday rhythms.
In Cambodia, the focus shifts to Phnom Penh’s royal landmarks and sobering modern history before continuing to Siem Reap and the extraordinary temples of Angkor. A Khmer cooking class, monk blessing, Tonle Sap village visit and traditional craft experiences add further depth along the way. Rich in atmosphere and carefully paced throughout, this small-group tour balances iconic sights with more personal, ground-level encounters.
VIETNAM CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS: This journey offers a particularly well-paced introduction to Vietnam, linking the capital’s street life, Ha Long Bay’s limestone seascapes, imperial Hue, atmospheric Hoi An and the energy of Ho Chi Minh City. What sets it apart is the way our expert guides bring each place to life beyond the headline sights, using urban micro-adventures, food experiences and more local, ground-level encounters to reveal the character, contrasts and everyday rhythm of the country.
HA LONG BAY OVERNIGHT CRUISE: Some of Vietnam’s most iconic experiences are woven together here in a way that feels varied rather than rushed. Cruise through the limestone formations of Ha Long Bay, explore Hue’s imperial legacy from inside the Citadel, and absorb the mellow charm of Hoi An with its lantern-lit streets and riverside trading history. These classic highlights are approached with care and context, making them feel more immersive and rewarding than a standard checklist tour.
MEKONG DELTA EXPERIENCE: The southern section of the journey shifts the focus towards daily life, food culture and the greener, slower-moving world of the Mekong Delta. In Ho Chi Minh City, expert-led walks through lesser-visited districts reveal the city beyond its colonial façades, while the Ben Tre day trip brings a more personal view of delta life through boats, bicycles, orchards and local encounters. This adds a valuable layer of authenticity and balance to the wider journey.
ANGKOR WAT TEMPLES: In Cambodia, the tour combines the country’s most important heritage sites with experiences that deepen your understanding of its culture and recent history. Phnom Penh brings together royal landmarks, Khmer art and moving visits that help place modern Cambodia in context. In Siem Reap, the temples of Angkor remain the great centrepiece, from the monumental faces of Angkor Thom to the grandeur of Angkor Wat, while a monk blessing, Tonle Sap visit and traditional craft experiences add extra texture.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
Designed for culturally curious travellers, this 14-day small-group journey goes beyond the standard Vietnam–Cambodia circuit, combining headline sights with expert guiding, food experiences and more local, ground-level encounters. It suits those who want the classics, but in a more immersive and better-paced way — with added insight, character and cultural depth throughout.
Arrive in Hanoi, where you will be met after immigration and baggage collection and transferred to your hotel in the western part of the Old Quarter, an area with a more local and atmospheric feel. Standard rooms are available from 14.00, though early check-in can be arranged in advance at a supplement. The rest of the day is left free to relax after your journey and settle in at your own pace. In the late afternoon, meet your guide for a short introductory walk to a nearby bia hoi, the city’s much-loved street beer spot, for a first taste of Hanoi’s easy-going evening culture. Dinner is at leisure.
Today reveals Hanoi through a lively and varied urban exploration with your expert guide. Begin on foot, discovering broad tree-lined avenues, narrow backstreets, busy markets and the distinctive atmosphere of the city’s railway quarter, before pausing at a respected tea house to sample traditional lotus tea. Continue to the Temple of Literature, Hanoi’s most important Confucian monument, then enjoy lunch at a thoughtfully run social enterprise restaurant. In the afternoon, explore another photogenic part of the city, passing the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the old Citadel before strolling along elegant Phan Dinh Phung Avenue. A local-style drinks break adds to the experience before you continue to Dong Xuan Market and finish with an electric buggy ride around the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Hotel de Lopera
The Hotel de L’Opera in Hanoi, is located near the Opera House, Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake. The hotel has a special ambiance - that of Vietnamese cool coupled with French decor - the modern and the traditional. Noted as the first boutique hotel in the heart of the capital, it boasts accents of architecture from many eras of the city's rich 1,000-year-old history.
This morning, depart Hanoi by shuttle transfer for Ha Long Bay. On arrival, board your cruise vessel, settle into your cabin and receive a welcome drink and safety briefing before lunch is served as the boat begins to thread its way through the bay’s extraordinary limestone scenery. During the afternoon, kayak to Trinh Nu Cave, one of the most beautiful caves in the bay, known for its light-filled interior, stalactites and small private beach. There may also be time to swim or simply relax. Back on board, enjoy the sundeck atmosphere, with activities such as a cooking demonstration or fruit carving depending on conditions, before dinner and an overnight stay amid the still waters of Ha Long Bay.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Begin the day early with an optional Tai Chi session on deck as the sun rises over the bay. A light breakfast is served before the cruise continues towards Sung Sot Cave, the largest and one of the most impressive caves in Ha Long Bay, where a paved walkway leads through a striking world of stalactites and stalagmites. Afterwards, return to the boat for brunch as you cruise back towards port, passing more of the bay’s iconic rock formations and floating communities. Disembark late morning and transfer back to Hanoi. From there, continue to the airport for your flight to Hue. On arrival, transfer to your hotel, well located in the heart of the former imperial capital.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
This morning, explore Hue’s imperial heritage, beginning with a walk through the Purple Forbidden City, once the private residence of Vietnam’s emperors and still one of the country’s most evocative historical sites. After time to pause for a refreshment, continue by traditional rickshaw through the wider Imperial City, revealing lakes, monuments, streets and neighbourhood life within the great walls. The ride continues to Kim Long, an old village associated with mandarins of the royal court. Around midday, enjoy a tasting of Hue’s distinctive banh dumplings in a long-established family garden house. Afterwards, drive south to Hoi An, crossing the celebrated Hai Van Pass with its sweeping coastal views, before arriving at your hotel in the evening.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Begin the day with a relaxed orientation walk through Hoi An’s old town, where your guide introduces the main landmarks, historic streets and mellow trading-port atmosphere that make this one of Vietnam’s most charming destinations. Continue into the market, where you meet the chef who will lead today’s cookery session and help you discover the herbs, spices and ingredients that shape central Vietnamese cuisine. From there, board a boat for a short cruise along the Thu Bon River to a small farm on an island setting. Enjoy a hands-on cooking class, then sit down to lunch featuring the dishes you have prepared. Return to the hotel by boat. The rest of the day is free at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
This morning, transfer without a guide to Da Nang Airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival, meet your local guide and transfer towards District 1, the historic and commercial heart of the city. If you wish, you may leave the vehicle before reaching the hotel and begin with a short guided walk through Saigon’s colonial quarter while your luggage continues separately. This easy stroll takes in some of the city’s best-known landmarks, including the Central Post Office, the Opera House, the Continental Hotel and City Hall, offering a first impression of Saigon’s French-era architecture and grand urban scale. The walk ends at your hotel, where you check in. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Leave the city behind this morning and drive south into a quieter, less-visited part of the Mekong Delta near Ben Tre. Reached after around two and a half hours, this is a rewarding area of waterways, orchards and small island communities, well away from the more crowded tourist routes. Board a private boat and begin a full day of exploration, meeting local people and gaining a closer sense of life shaped by the river. After visiting a small local workshop, continue to an island guesthouse for lunch. In the afternoon, visit a honey-bee farm, cycle along narrow pathways through orchards and hamlets, stop to sample local sâm jelly, then continue by sampan through mangrove-lined channels before returning to Ho Chi Minh City.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
This morning, discover a different side of Ho Chi Minh City on a guided urban exploration through some of its lesser-visited neighbourhoods. Begin in District 3 with a stop at the city’s oldest café, dating from 1938, before continuing into lively local markets, old apartment blocks and the atmospheric lanes of Chung Cu. From there, explore the Ho Thi Ky quarter, known both for its vibrant flower market and its long-established Khmer food culture, then continue deeper into District 10, where everyday street life unfolds far from the city’s polished centre. The morning ends on one of Saigon’s best-known street-food streets, where lunch is served. Later, transfer to the airport for your onward flight to Phnom Penh. On arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
La Rose Suites
The La Rose Suites boutique hotel is located in the heart of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's bustling capital. Although one of the new hotels in town, it has already established itself as likeable up-comer that is both hip and relaxed, blending both Khmer tradition with Asian hospitality. The boutique style design is inspired by the charming French Indochina architecture, while the interiors reflect the grandeur of Angkor Wat. Ideal for a relaxing stay in this vibrant city, La Rose Suites is just minutes away from many of Phnom Penh's major attractions.
Today explores Phnom Penh’s most important cultural and historical sites. Begin at the Royal Palace, one of the capital’s most impressive architectural landmarks, and visit the remarkable Silver Pagoda, famed for its silver floor tiles, marble steps and revered Buddha images. Continue to the National Museum, home to one of Cambodia’s finest collections of Khmer art and sculpture. After lunch, the focus shifts to the country’s painful recent history with visits to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields, both powerful and sobering experiences. In the late afternoon, unwind with a sunset cruise on the Mekong River, watching river life unfold as the sky softens into evening colours.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
This morning, take part in a hands-on Khmer cooking class, beginning with a visit to a local market to select fresh ingredients and learn more about the herbs, vegetables and flavours that define Cambodian cuisine. Guided by an experienced chef, prepare a selection of traditional dishes and then enjoy your own creations for lunch. Afterwards, leave Phnom Penh and drive north towards Siem Reap along Highway 6, watching the rhythms of Cambodian rural life unfold along the way. En route, stop at Kampong Kdei Bridge, an impressive 12th-century stone bridge dating from the reign of Jayavarman VII and one of the few surviving examples of Angkorian engineering. Arrive in Siem Reap and check in.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Shinta Mani Angkor
Shinta Mani Angkor is a contemporary boutique hotel, set on the southern end of Royal Palace in Siem Reap, Northwest Cambodia. Bangkok-based American designer Bill Bensley has created spaces that are serene and minimalist yet flamboyant in style, surrounded with sophisticated laid-back environments and inspired by the architecture of Angkor. The challenging design transcends a feeling of an urban resort, albeit with a new architectural language.
After breakfast, begin exploring the extraordinary temples of Angkor. Start at Angkor Thom, the last great capital of the Khmer Empire, entering through its monumental South Gate before visiting the Bayon with its iconic carved faces, as well as the Baphuon, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King. Continue to Ta Prohm, one of Angkor’s most atmospheric temples, where giant roots and ancient stone remain strikingly entwined. After lunch, visit a peaceful Buddhist pagoda for a private monk blessing ceremony, a memorable cultural experience. Later, continue to Angkor Wat, the vast and iconic temple complex that stands as Cambodia’s greatest architectural and spiritual monument.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
This morning, travel out to Tonle Sap Lake to explore one of its distinctive waterside communities. Depending on the season, this may be Kampong Phluk, with its dramatic stilted houses, or Chong Kneas during the dry months, while in the rainy season a pirogue journey through the flooded forest may also form part of the visit. After lunch, return towards Siem Reap to discover traditional craftsmanship and community-based projects. Visit the Silk Farm at Pouk to learn about the process of silk production, from mulberry cultivation to weaving, and the role it plays in supporting rural livelihoods. Back in town, continue to Les Artisans d’Angkor before ending the day with a walk through the lively Old Market.
Meals Included: Breakfast
After breakfast, enjoy some free time before your transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Depending on your departure time, there may be an opportunity to relax at the hotel or take a final independent look around Siem Reap. For those wishing to extend the journey, a beach stay in Cambodia can be added, offering time to unwind on the coast after the cultural depth of Vietnam and Cambodia. Otherwise, transfer to the airport and depart, bringing the trip to a close after a richly varied route through cities, heritage sites, river landscapes and temple treasures.
Meals Included: Breakfast
GROUP, SUPPORT STAFF & TRIP STYLE: This is a 14-day small-group journey through Vietnam and Cambodia, combining major cultural sites, scenic overland sections, river and bay experiences, and more local, ground-level encounters. The trip is led by local expert guides in each country, with drivers, cruise staff and other specialist local support where required. The style is comfortable and immersive rather than luxury-led, with the emphasis on cultural depth, variety and well-paced exploration. Most days combine guided touring with some free time, allowing space to absorb each destination properly. It suits culturally curious travellers who want the classic highlights, but presented in a more thoughtful and engaging way.
ACCOMMODATION, MEAL PLAN, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation is in comfortable hotels throughout, with one overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay. Breakfast is included daily, with selected lunches and some dinners included as specified in the itinerary. Meals range from local restaurants and home-style cooking to food-led experiences such as the cookery session in Hoi An and the Khmer cooking class in Phnom Penh. Cuisine varies rewardinglly across the route, from Hanoi street flavours and central Vietnamese specialities to Mekong produce and Khmer dishes in Cambodia. Bottled or purified drinking water should be used throughout the journey, and untreated tap water should be avoided. Dietary requirements can usually be accommodated with advance notice.
HEALTH, FITNESS & TERRAIN: This tour is suitable for travellers with a normal level of fitness who are comfortable with light-to-moderate activity in warm and often humid conditions. Most days involve walking through cities, markets, temple sites and historical compounds, with some uneven ground, steps and longer sightseeing days. The Mekong visit includes boat travel and light cycling, while Angkor and Hue involve sustained walking around large heritage sites. The pace is not strenuous, but the climate can make sightseeing feel more demanding than expected. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a reasonable level of mobility are important. This is a cultural journey first and foremost, but one that rewards travellers who enjoy being active and engaged throughout the day.
SPENDING MONEY, CURRENCY & TIPPING: This journey covers two countries, so it is sensible to carry a mix of local cash and cards. In Vietnam, the currency is the dong; in Cambodia, the riel is the official currency, although US dollars are still widely used for many transactions. ATMs are readily available in major centres such as Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, but smaller denominations are useful for drinks, markets and incidental purchases. Personal spending will vary depending on dinners not included, drinks, souvenirs and optional activities. Tipping is customary and appreciated in both countries, so travellers should allow for gratuities for guides, drivers, boat crews, hotel staff and restaurant teams where appropriate.
PASSPORTS, VISAS, BAGGAGE, CLIMATE & INSURANCE: Travellers should carry a valid passport with sufficient validity beyond the end of the trip and must meet the latest entry requirements for both Vietnam and Cambodia. Depending on nationality, visas may be required for one or both countries. Baggage should be reasonably manageable, as the itinerary includes domestic flights, road journeys, a cruise and several hotel changes. A medium-sized suitcase or soft bag plus a daypack usually works well. Conditions vary by region, but expect generally warm to hot temperatures, humidity and strong sun, with occasional rain depending on season. Lightweight clothing, modest dress for temples, insect repellent, swimwear, a light waterproof layer and comfortable footwear are all advisable. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential and should cover medical expenses, cancellations, delays and all included activities.
BOATS, CRUISES & CULTURAL SITES: This itinerary includes several water-based and heritage experiences, including the Ha Long Bay overnight cruise, Mekong Delta boat journeys, a Mekong sunset cruise in Phnom Penh and visits to major temple and palace sites. Cruise and boat schedules may occasionally change due to weather, water levels or operational conditions. At cultural and religious sites such as Angkor, the Royal Palace and pagodas, respectful dress and behaviour are essential, with shoulders and knees covered where required. Shoes may need to be removed at certain places. A flexible attitude is helpful throughout, particularly where transport timings, river conditions or local arrangements shape the day’s programme.
• Accommodation: Twin/double rooms on a sharing basis throughout the tour, including one night on board the Ha Long Bay cruise. Single room available with a supplement, subject to availability.
• Meals: As specified day-by-day in the itinerary (B/L/D). Breakfast is included daily, with selected lunches and dinners included during the journey.
• Transport: All ground transport, private transfers, shuttle transfers and boat journeys listed in the itinerary.
• Flights: Domestic flight from Hanoi to Hue and international/regional flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, where specified in the itinerary.
• Included visits & activities: All sightseeing, excursions and entrance fees explicitly named as included in the day-by-day programme.

• Travel insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance is essential and not included.
• Health requirements: Vaccinations, health tests and any medical documentation required for travel.
