Luxury Vietnam Tour from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta

Hanoi to HCM City – 14 Days

Expedition Overview

Discover Vietnam in refined style on this 14-day journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, combining cultural depth, scenic cruising and a relaxed beach stay. Begin in Hanoi with VIP arrival assistance, a sidecar ride through the capital and an elegant evening by Hoan Kiem Lake, before cruising Ha Long Bay for two nights among limestone islands and emerald waters. Continue to imperial Hue for citadel walks, river cruising and traditional craft villages, then cross the Hai Van Pass to lantern-lit Hoi An.

The second half balances hands-on experiences with time to unwind. Join a market visit and cooking class in Hoi An, enjoy a private lantern-lit dinner among the rice fields, then pause at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. Fly south to Ho Chi Minh City and explore the Mekong Delta’s quieter waterways, coconut workshops, village lanes and local food traditions before departure.

Highlights

HANOI BY SIDECAR: Begin in the capital with VIP airport assistance and a stay near the Old Quarter, then explore Hanoi from the passenger seat of a vintage-style sidecar. Ride past symbolic avenues, West Lake, Tay Ho and the Opera House, with time for coconut coffee and local temple visits. In the evening, enjoy a rooftop cocktail overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake, followed by a traditional rickshaw ride through the colonial quarter and a refined Vietnamese dinner in an atmospheric heritage setting.

HA LONG BAY CRUISE: Spend two nights cruising through the limestone seascape of Ha Long Bay, giving more time to reach quieter corners beyond the usual day routes. Enjoy lunch on board as karst islands rise from the emerald water, then settle into the rhythm of the bay with sundeck sunsets, seasonal activities, cooking demonstrations and dinner on board. A full extra day by day boat allows deeper exploration, with Tai Chi at sunrise and relaxed cruising among the archipelago’s less-travelled channels.

HUE, HOI AN & CENTRAL VIETNAM: Discover Central Vietnam through imperial history, riverside craft traditions and coastal scenery. Walk through Hue’s Imperial Citadel, ride by rickshaw through the wider royal city and cruise the Perfume River for lunch before visiting villages known for paper flowers and ancestral painting techniques. Continue south via Cau Hai Lagoon and the Hai Van Pass, then arrive in Hoi An by private boat, setting the tone for its lantern-lit streets, old trading houses and riverside charm.

COOKING, COAST & MEKONG DELTA: The journey balances hands-on experiences with time to unwind. In Hoi An, visit the market with a chef, cruise to an island farm for a cooking class and end the day with a private lantern-lit barbecue dinner among rice fields. Afterwards, relax at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort on the Son Tra Peninsula before flying south. From Ho Chi Minh City, explore Ben Tre’s quieter Mekong waterways, coconut gardens, brick kilns, cycling lanes, sampan canals and local food traditions.

Why Asian Geographical?

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Hanoi

Arrive at Noi Bai Airport, where an airport representative will meet you before immigration, holding a signboard with your name. You will be assisted through immigration and baggage collection, avoiding the slower arrival queues, then escorted out to meet your guide. Transfer to your hotel in Hanoi. Rooms are normally available from 14:00; early check-in can be arranged in advance for a supplement. After settling in, the rest of the day is free to relax or begin exploring independently. Your hotel is close to the Old Quarter, ideal for a gentle first walk through Hanoi’s atmospheric lanes.

DAY 2

Hanoi

Meet your guide at 09:00 and set off by vintage-style sidecar motorcycle for a memorable ride through Hanoi. Travel along symbolic avenues near the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, continue around West Lake and pause for coconut coffee or fresh juice with lake views. Visit an important temple in Tay Ho, then return towards the city centre, passing the Temple of Literature before ending near the Opera House. The afternoon is at leisure. At 17:00, transfer to Hoan Kiem Lake for a rooftop cocktail, followed by a rickshaw ride through the French Quarter and Old Quarter before a refined Vietnamese dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3

Halong Bay

Depart Hanoi at 08:30 and drive across the Red River Delta towards the coast. After approximately two and a half hours, arrive at the marina for check-in and a welcome drink before boarding your cruise vessel. Lunch is served as the boat begins sailing through the limestone seascape of Ha Long Bay. In the afternoon, the cruise continues towards a quieter area of the bay, with time to relax on deck, sunbathe or join seasonal activities arranged according to weather and local conditions. As sunset falls over the karsts, enjoy an aperitif or cooking demonstration before dinner on board.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

image
Halong Bay

DAY 4

Halong Bay

Early risers may begin with a Tai Chi session on the sundeck, as the first light spreads across the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay. After breakfast, take what you need for the day and transfer to a smaller day boat while the main vessel returns to the wharf. This allows deeper exploration of less-visited corners of the bay, with extra cruising and activities arranged according to the weather, season and cruise programme. Lunch is served on the day boat. Return to the main vessel around 16:00, with time to refresh before another sunset and dinner among the limestone formations.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Hanoi

Join the crew for sunrise Tai Chi or enjoy a slower start before a light breakfast on board. The cruise continues through another scenic section of the archipelago before you check out of your cabin and sit down to a fuller breakfast or brunch as the boat returns to port. Disembark around 10:30 and transfer privately to Hanoi Airport for your flight to Hue. On arrival, meet your local guide and continue to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free to settle in and enjoy Hue at your own pace, with its riverside setting and imperial atmosphere.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 6

Hue

Begin with a guided walk through Hue Imperial Citadel, former residence of Vietnam’s emperors, entering through the southern gate and continuing towards the northern side. After a refreshment stop, explore the wider Imperial City by rickshaw, passing monuments, lakes, avenues, local shops and long-established neighbourhoods within the old walls. At midday, board a private boat for lunch on the Perfume River, enjoying views of historic architecture and greenery. In the afternoon, visit riverside craft villages known for paper flowers and traditional painting techniques, then continue by small motorboat with a fisherman across a scenic lagoon before returning at sundown.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 7

Hoi An & Danang

Leave Hue at 10:00 and travel south towards Cau Hai Lagoon, part of the largest coastal lagoon system in Southeast Asia and known for calm waters, fishing villages and poetic landscapes. Enjoy lunch at Vedana Lagoon, an elegant retreat with panoramic views and refined dining. Afterwards, continue towards Hoi An, crossing the Hai Van Pass, one of Vietnam’s most scenic coastal roads, with stops for photographs along the way. Instead of driving directly to the hotel, arrive first in Hoi An ancient town and board a private boat, sipping a refreshment as you cruise gently towards your hotel.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

image
Hoi An & Danang

DAY 8

Hoi An & Danang

Begin with a guided orientation walk through Hoi An’s old town, where yellow-walled houses, historic lanes and trading heritage create one of Vietnam’s most photogenic settings. Continue to the market and meet the chef who will lead your cookery session, introducing the herbs, spices and fresh produce central to Vietnamese cuisine. From the market, board a boat and cruise to a small island farm on the Thu Bon River for a hands-on cooking class, followed by lunch. Return to the hotel by boat and relax. This evening, enjoy a private lantern-lit barbecue dinner set among the rice paddies.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9

Hoi An & Danang

After breakfast and check-out, transfer privately from Hoi An to Danang, a journey of around 45 minutes. Your destination is the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, set on the green slopes of the Son Tra Peninsula above the sea. Designed with strong architectural character and surrounded by coastal forest, the resort combines beach, hillside views and refined facilities in one of central Vietnam’s most dramatic settings. On arrival, settle into your room and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. You may relax by the beach, explore the resort or simply enjoy the slower coastal pace.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 10

Hoi An & Danang

These two days are free, with no scheduled touring. Enjoy the facilities of your resort, unwind on the beach or spend time by the pool. Danang is also well placed for independent exploration, with seaside cafés, local markets, the Han River waterfront and a lively dining scene known for seafood and central Vietnamese specialities. You may choose a spa treatment, take a gentle walk along the coast or simply use these days as a pause between the cultural touring of Hoi An and the energy of Ho Chi Minh City. Your guide can advise on optional arrangements if required.

At the appropriate time, your guide will accompany you from the hotel to Tan Son Nhat International Airport for your departure flight. The transfer usually takes around 45 minutes, depending on traffic, marking the end of your Vietnam journey from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta.

Meals Included: Breakfast

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, SUPPORT STAFF & TRIP STYLE: This is a refined private or small-group Vietnam journey with expert local guiding on sightseeing days, private transfers where specified, and selected shared arrangements for flights, cruises or same-flight arrivals where practical. The pace is comfortable but varied, combining cultural touring, scenic cruising, light walking, gentle cycling, cookery, craft encounters and leisure time. It suits travellers seeking Vietnam in style, with distinctive experiences rather than a conventional sightseeing circuit.

ACCOMMODATION, MEAL PLAN, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation is in carefully selected hotels and a private en-suite cabin during the Ha Long Bay cruise, with a beach stay at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. Meals are included as shown in the itinerary, with breakfasts, selected lunches, cruise meals, refined dinners, a cooking class, riverside dining and local restaurants. Bottled or purified drinking water should be used throughout; tap water is not recommended for drinking.

ALTITUDE, HEALTH & VACCINATIONS: This is a low-altitude journey and does not involve trekking or high-altitude exposure. Travellers should be comfortable with short city walks, steps at heritage sites, boarding boats, and gentle cycling in the Mekong Delta. Current UK travel health guidance recommends checking vaccine advice at least eight weeks before departure, and TravelHealthPro notes mosquito-borne risks in Vietnam, including dengue, so insect-bite precautions are advisable.

SPENDING MONEY, CURRENCY & TIPPING: The local currency is the Vietnamese dong, though US dollars may be accepted in some tourist contexts. Carry small notes for cafés, markets, optional snacks, drinks, personal purchases and gratuities. Credit cards are accepted in many hotels and higher-end restaurants, but cash remains useful for local markets, rural areas and small vendors. Tipping is discretionary but customary for guides, drivers, cruise staff, porters and restaurant staff when service has been good.

PASSPORTS, VISAS, BAGGAGE, CLIMATE & INSURANCE: British passport holders should ensure their passport has at least six months’ validity from arrival, at least two blank pages and no damage; UK official advice currently states that British nationals may be refused entry or exit if the passport is damaged. Vietnam’s rules can change, so visa eligibility should be checked at booking and again before travel. Pack light, breathable clothing, comfortable shoes, sun protection and a light waterproof. Comprehensive travel insurance, including medical cover, cancellation, curtailment, baggage and all included activities, is essential.
