Vietnam Highlights: Hanoi to Saigon

Hanoi to HCM City – 12 Days

Expedition Overview

From Hanoi’s Old Quarter to Ho Chi Minh City’s energetic boulevards, this 12-day journey threads Vietnam’s essential landscapes and stories with smart pacing and plenty of time to savour each place. Begin in the capital with a micro-adventure through street markets, railway-side lanes and the Temple of Literature, then slip into the limestone scenery of Ninh Binh by bicycle and sampan. Cruise overnight through Ha Long Bay’s karst seascapes before flying to imperial Hue for a concise, on-foot and cyclo exploration of the Citadel and garden-house lunch in Kim Long village.

Continue south over the Hai Van Pass to lantern-lit Hoi An, where an easy walking food trail introduces local flavours and leaves space for a free day—beach, shopping, cafés or simply slowing down. In Saigon, cross into offbeat neighbourhoods and colonial landmarks on a guided micro-adventure, then finish with a full-day escape into the less-travelled Mekong Delta at Ben Tre: private boat rides, cycling island lanes, orchard tastings and quiet mangrove channels. Private transfers, expert guiding and handpicked hotels keep the journey seamless throughout.

Highlights

HANOI STREET FOOD TOUR & OLD QUARTER WALK: Start in Hanoi with a guide-led walk designed to reveal the city beyond its main sights. Visit the Temple of Literature for cultural context, pause at a trusted tea stop, then continue through back lanes, street markets, shaded boulevards and the atmospheric railway-side neighbourhood. The experience ends with a lively street-food meal, where you can watch local chefs at work and taste signature Hanoi dishes with confidence, safety and no guesswork.

NINH BINH INLAND HA LONG BAY CYCLING & BOAT RIDE: Trade the capital for Ninh Binh’s rice fields, limestone towers and peaceful village lanes, often described as “Inland Ha Long Bay”. Visit Hoa Lu’s ancient dynastic temples before cycling easy, mostly flat routes through rural landscapes and karst valleys to Bich Dong Pagoda, with time to climb for wider views. Late afternoon, drift by sampan along a quiet waterway as the light softens and crowds thin, creating gentle adventure with striking scenery.

HA LONG BAY OVERNIGHT CRUISE: Board an elegant overnight cruise and watch Ha Long Bay’s limestone pillars rise from the water as lunch is served on board. The afternoon is deliberately relaxed, with time for photographs, fresh air and optional activities depending on weather, tides and local permissions. At sunset, settle on the sundeck for an aperitif and cooking demonstration before dinner. Wake to calm waters, join early Tai Chi if you wish, then enjoy brunch while sailing back.

HUE IMPERIAL CITADEL TOUR & CYCLO RIDE: Explore Hue’s royal heritage with a cyclo ride through the wider Imperial City area, passing lived-in streets, lakes and historic quarters before continuing on foot through the Imperial Citadel and Purple Forbidden City. Later, contrast the monuments with lagoon life, cycling quiet rural lanes, crossing wetlands by boat, learning traditional fishing techniques and enjoying lunch near the coast. The day ends with a scenic drive over the Hai Van Pass to Hoi An.

Why Asian Geographical?

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Hanoi

On arrival at Noi Bai Airport, meet your local guide outside the arrivals hall and transfer to your hotel in central Hanoi (about 45 minutes). Rooms are available from 14:00; early check-in can be pre-booked (supplement applies). After settling in, keep the day gentle: stretch your legs with an independent stroll through the Old Quarter’s tight lanes, colonial façades and buzzing street life, close to your hotel. If you’d like a smoother arrival, FastTrack services can be arranged in advance to minimise immigration queues.

DAY 2

Hanoi

Micro adventure & Temple of Literature: This morning begins at the Temple of Literature, Hanoi’s most iconic Confucian site, where your guide unpacks Vietnam’s scholarly traditions and how they still shape daily life. Pause at a well-regarded tea house, then set off on a lively walking micro adventure through backstreets, street markets and shaded boulevards, reading the city’s rhythm as it shifts from quiet corners to busy crossroads. You’ll also walk alongside the famous railway line before ending with a street-food feast in a spacious courtyard—watch the cooks at work and taste classic Hanoi flavours. Return transfer to your hotel.

DAY 3

Ninh Binh

Hoa Lu, cycling, Bich Dong & boat ride: After breakfast, travel south to Ninh Binh (around 2 hours), a landscape of rice fields and limestone karsts often dubbed “Inland Ha Long Bay”. Start at Hoa Lu, once an imperial capital; while little remains of the citadel, the temples of the Dinh and Le dynasties set the historical scene. Continue to Tam Coc, collect bicycles and enjoy lunch by the water. In the afternoon, cycle easy country lanes through karst valleys and villages, then climb to the multi-level Bich Dong Pagoda for rewarding views. Later, take a late-day sampan cruise for softer light and fewer crowds.

DAY 4

Halong Bay

Overnight cruise: Depart Ninh Binh and drive across the Red River Delta towards the coast (about 4 hours). On arrival, complete check-in formalities and board your cruise boat with a welcome drink. As the vessel glides into the Ha Long archipelago, lunch is served and the limestone towers begin to frame the seascape. The afternoon is designed for slower exploration in a quieter zone—perhaps light kayaking, a short shore visit, or simply sunbathing on deck, depending on weather and season. As dusk falls, enjoy sunset views from the sundeck, an aperitif and often a cooking demonstration before dinner.

DAY 5

Hue

Hanoi, fly to Hue: Rise early for a sunrise Tai Chi session on deck, or enjoy a slower morning as the bay wakes around you. A light breakfast is served before visiting another corner of the archipelago. Later, check out of your cabin and take a full brunch while the boat cruises back towards port. Disembark mid-morning and transfer by private vehicle to Hanoi Airport (about 2.5 hours total from Ha Long). Fly to Hue, Vietnam’s former imperial capital. On arrival, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel (around 40 minutes). The remainder of the day is at leisure—perfect for a riverside walk or a quiet evening in the old city.

image
Hue

DAY 6

Hue

Hue micro adventure & Imperial Citadel: This morning explores Hue’s imperial story with an on-foot discovery of the Citadel and the Purple Forbidden City, moving from the southern to northern gates while your guide brings Vietnam’s royal past into focus. Pause at a local café for a refreshment, then continue by traditional cyclo (rickshaw) for a relaxed ride along the inner city’s lakes, avenues and everyday neighbourhood life—Hue’s “town within a town”. Exit the walls and continue to Kim Long village, once home to mandarins and court officials. You’re welcomed into a family garden house for a simple, home-style lunch full of local flavour. After the meal, return to your hotel by taxi.

DAY 7

Hoi An & Danang

Hue to Hoi An via Lang Co & Hai Van Pass; Hoi An walking food tour: Leave Hue for Hoi An, travelling via the photogenic sweep of Lang Co Bay and the celebrated Hai Van Pass, where panoramic sea views make for a memorable stop. Arrive around midday and settle into your hotel. Later, join your guide for an unhurried walk through Hoi An’s ancient town: mellow yellow façades, lantern-lit lanes, old merchant houses and small courtyards that hint at the city’s trading past. Along the way, your guide adds spontaneous tastings—snacks, drinks and the culinary stories that give Hoi An its character. The walk’s pace and length can be adjusted to suit the group.

DAY 8

Hoi An & Danang

A full free day to enjoy Hoi An at your own rhythm. Browse tailor shops and galleries, linger in cafés, or wander early to photograph the quiet lanes before the afternoon bustle. If you fancy the coast, head to An Bang Beach (around 4 km from the old town) for an easy swim and a seafood lunch with your feet in the sand. Alternatively, spend time exploring the riverside, visiting local markets, or simply relaxing at the hotel pool. Your guide can suggest optional activities—cookery, cycling, or a short countryside outing—depending on your interests.

DAY 9

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Hoi An to Da Nang, fly to Ho Chi Minh City: Depending on your flight schedule, meet your guide and driver for the short transfer to Da Nang Airport (about 45 minutes). Fly south to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival, your local guide meets you outside the terminal and transfers you to your centrally located hotel (around 35–45 minutes, traffic dependent). After check-in, the remainder of the day is free to settle in and get your bearings. You might opt for a gentle first stroll to see the city’s energy—street cafés, neon-lit corners and the hum of motorbikes—or simply rest ahead of tomorrow’s walking adventure.

image
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

DAY 10

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Saigon micro adventure: colonial landmarks & offbeat neighbourhoods: This morning reveals two contrasting Saigons on foot. Begin at a little-known walking bridge—originally named Pont des Messageries Maritimes and linked to Gustave Eiffel—crossing from District 1 into District 4, once notorious, now a lively working-class neighbourhood with riverfront charm. Explore a covered market and a maze of alleys, then pause for a local coffee. Continue through the grand avenues and colonial-era icons that shaped the city’s French imprint: the Reunification Palace exterior, Central Post Office, City Hall, Opera House and Ben Thanh Market area. Finish with a street-food lunch at the base of old apartment blocks (chung cu), tasting everyday Saigon classics.

DAY 11

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Ben Tre: less-travelled Mekong Delta (full day): Leave the metropolis behind for Ben Tre (around 2.5 hours), reaching a quieter, less-visited slice of the Mekong Delta. Board a private boat and cruise through waterways where daily life unfolds along the banks. Visit a small local workshop, then continue to a relatively uncharted island for lunch at a simple guesthouse. In the afternoon, swap to bicycles and ride narrow lanes through orchards and hamlets, stopping at a farm to learn about Sâm jelly and sample it fresh. Later, step into a small sampan and glide through a mangrove-fringed channel for an intimate look at delta landscapes. Rejoin your driver and return to Ho Chi Minh City by late afternoon/early evening.

DAY 12

Ho Chi Minh City Departure

Enjoy a relaxed final morning with free time for last-minute shopping, a coffee on a shaded terrace, or a short walk nearby. Check-out is by midday; late check-out can be arranged in advance at an additional cost. At the appropriate time, your guide accompanies you to Tan Son Nhat Airport for your onward flight (around 45 minutes; traffic can be variable). If you’d like to round off the journey, consider an optional visit to a market, a final street-food stop, or a brief museum visit—timings permitting. Depart with a well-paced snapshot of Vietnam’s essentials: Hanoi’s heritage, karst landscapes, Ha Long’s seascapes, imperial Hue, Hoi An’s charm, and Saigon’s energy.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

JOURNEY STYLE, PACE AND WHAT MAKES THIS ITINERARY WORK: This is a well-paced north–south journey designed to give you Vietnam’s key experiences without feeling rushed. Expect a purposeful rhythm: guided “micro adventures” in the main cities, balanced by scenic interludes in Ninh Binh and a restful overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay. There are a few travel days—road transfers and two domestic flights—planned to keep the route logical and reduce backtracking. Most afternoons and evenings are left open enough for personal time, especially in Hoi An, while your guide keeps the big moments timed for comfort, atmosphere and better crowd conditions.

TRANSFERS, FLIGHTS AND SMOOTH HANDOVERS: Vietnam runs on momentum: airport meets, short drives, domestic flights and hotel check-ins that need to connect cleanly. Your guide and drivers manage these transitions so the day stays calm—meeting points, timings and baggage flow are handled on your behalf. Road journeys are generally comfortable, with breaks when needed; traffic can be variable in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, so we build sensible buffers rather than pushing tight schedules. The Ha Long cruise includes fixed embarkation and disembarkation windows; we position you to arrive smoothly, board efficiently and avoid unnecessary waiting.

WALKING, CYCLING AND ACTIVITY LEVEL: Activity is easy to moderate and designed for enjoyment rather than endurance. You’ll do city walks on pavements and uneven old-quarter lanes, gentle cycling in Ninh Binh on flat village paths, steps at Bich Dong Pagoda, and short on/off boat movements in Ninh Binh, Ha Long and the Mekong. Heat and humidity can make simple distances feel more demanding, particularly from late spring to early autumn. Comfortable walking shoes, breathable clothing and a small daypack for water, sun protection and essentials will keep you happiest. You can always slow your pace—these are experiences, not fitness tests.

FOOD, DIETARY NEEDS AND STREET-FOOD CONFIDENCE: Several meals are chosen for local flavour and a “safe, confident” introduction—especially the guided street-food experiences in Hanoi and Saigon. We focus on reputable vendors and dishes that travel well, with clean preparation and high turnover. Vietnam’s cuisine is fresh, aromatic and varied; if you have allergies, vegetarian preferences or other dietary requirements, tell us in advance and we’ll steer choices accordingly. Tap water isn’t recommended; bottled or filtered water is the default, and your guide will help you navigate coffee, ice and market snacks sensibly.

CULTURAL ETIQUETTE, PHOTOGRAPHY AND RESPECTFUL VISITING: Vietnam is relaxed, but temples, pagodas and community settings still call for good manners. Dress modestly for sacred sites (shoulders and knees covered), remove shoes where required, and keep voices low around active worship. Ask before photographing people—especially in markets, small alleys and rural areas—so interactions remain natural and dignified. In Hue’s Citadel and historic sites, expect some restoration areas and occasional restricted sections; your guide will navigate the best routes and explain what you’re seeing beyond the postcard façade.

HOTELS, CRUISE COMFORT AND PRACTICAL PACKING: Accommodation is selected for comfort, service and smart locations, with a one-night Ha Long Bay cruise in a private en-suite cabin. Cruise schedules and activities vary by weather and season; flexibility is part of the experience, and safety decisions are always final. Pack light and streamlined: soft-sided luggage is easier for vehicle loading and flight sectors, and a compact “day kit” (passport copy, medications, chargers, sun protection, insect repellent and a light rain layer) keeps daily touring effortless. Laundry services are widely available, and a simple capsule wardrobe works best in humid conditions.
