Hoshinoya Fuji: Luxury Glamping in Japan

Hoshinoya Fuji is quintessentially a modern Japanese hotel, set in the forested mountainside, on the edge of Lake Kaawaguchi and north of Mount Fuji. The glassy lakeside cabins that open up into red pine forests, feel completely immersed in nature, offering a true glamping experience, albeit staying indoors in your comfortable beds. There is the Cloud Terrace and marshmallow-toasting kit in your room to be used on the top deck, Takibi lounge with a bonfire space.

This Japanese design hotel meets camping, minus the tents. On arrival at the reception of Hoshinoya Fuji, guests are given stylishly utilitarian bags, containing binoculars, headlight, map and a blanket, before being driven to the lodge. There are 40 minimalist cabins that sit within the mountainside Aokigahara Forest, each offering spectacular views of Lake Kawaguchi and Mt Fuji. All are simple and chic with floor to ceiling windows and private balconies with a contemporary campfire.

Dining is a highlight here with the dining room enjoying glorious views of the pine forests. The Cloud Terrace offers a small and intimate alfresco dining space with food prepared entirely in Dutch ovens. A series of wooden platforms, with sofas and campfires, also offer the opportunity to take in the surroundings and there's an additional cafe. Activities at the lodge include horse riding into the pine forest, morning canoeing on Lake Kawaguchi and hiking to the top of Mount Sankodai.

Stay Hoshinoya Fuji features just 40 stylish cabins. Scattered across the hillside like giant concrete periscopes, they are crafted to blend into the natural environment. Huge picture windows draw you outside with panoramic views of Lake Kawaguchi, backed by the snow-capped Mt Fuji, Japan's tallest peak. The interiors have modern Japanese design; heated flooring, a private porch with a woodburner, electric blankets, and supremely comfortable beds with spacious bathrooms.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at the Hoshinoya Fuji but there are no specific facilities available for younger children. Please note that the hotel has designed with couples and families with older children in mind.

Dine Dining at the Hoshinoya Fuji is a memorable experience. Breakfast is delivered to cabins in a wooden box and includes freshly-baked breads, Spanish omelettes, yoghurts, local juices and jams or you can have it cooked outdoors in the Cloud Terrace. Dinner is in the vaulted wooden restaurant, where chef Yuji Kanai serves Japanese cuisine prepared with wild deer and boar caught by local hunters. Alternatively, eat an eight-course delicious meal prepared in a Dutch oven next to your table.

Relax There is plenty to keep you busy at the Hoshinoya Fuji. You can take lessons on how to brew a refreshing cup of coffee or pizza making, to walks through Aokigahara Forest; a national park also known as the ‘Sea of Trees’.

Experience Activities at the Hoshinoya Fuji includes canoeing on Lake Kawaguchi: one of the Fuji Five Lakes that Hoshinoya Fuji overlooks. During the day, you can schedule a ride in the forest on horseback. Just 15 minutes from the hotel, you will find yourself deep in the wilds of nature, until you reach the viewpoint at Mount Sankodai, offering stunning panoramic views.

Location Hoshinoya Fuji is located close to Mt Fuji in Aokigahara Forest, just on the edge of Lake Kaawaguchi.

Geting there 12-hour International flight to Tokyo International Airport-Haneda, followed by a train journey to Kawaguchiko Station, via Otsuki Station. Alternatively you can travel from Tokyo to Hoshinoya Fuji with a private chauffeur guide.

When to go Mt Fuji and the surrounding area is characterised by a mild climate with high precipitation. The climate here is much cooler than it is in Tokyo. The area is a year round destination, but best time to visit is from April to November with trekking in July and August.
