Amankora Thimphu

The Amankora lodge is located in the hills outside Thimphu, overlooking a stream and close to nature. It is like taking your luxuries in a rucksack into the wilderness. There is a feel of openness and an earthy touch with the wind and rain. Even when you are asleep, the only thing that stands between you and nature are the large glass window panes.

The lodge has a Dzong-like architecture and a feeling of calm descends as soon as you enter the Amankora at Thimphu. The reason lies in its design, inspired by the century old style and natural colours. The inside of the walls is wood panelled, the fabric is handmade and the wooden floors shine like a ship’s deck. What is modern is not ostentatious, but items of necessity to which the guests are accustomed.

The room is large with large glass windows opening to the panoramic views outside. The bathroom is open-plan separated from bed by only a wooden stove that burns the pine wood thrown in. I like the Amankora concept to stay small and luxurious. But this is what Amankora is good at; creating lodges with small number of rooms but creatively unique and sympathetically balanced to their environment.

Stay Amankora in Thimphu has 16 spacious villas. All suites combine a bedroom and lounge, and feature a king-size bed with views across a landscaped courtyard, or of the stream and pine forest. A traditional bukhari is positioned between the bedroom and the bathroom. The suite’s interior features wood panelling and chocolate brown walls. The spacious bathroom has twin vanities, separate shower, hanging space and a terrazzo-clad bath.

ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at the Amankora Thimphu, but there are no specific facilities available. Although some of the trekking may only be suitable for older children, there is much to do in the surrounds. The local flora, fauna, handicraft centres and villages form interesting excursions.

Dine In Amankora, luxury comes in the form of service. You eat what you like, not what is given to you. Every meal is tailored by the chef to your taste. The restaurant offers European and Asian cuisine. Bhutanese, Thai or Indian set menu rotating every day.

Relax As Thimphu is an active place and the site of much socialising, the focus of the Spa at Amankora, Thimphu offers treatments to provide a peaceful haven, where addition herbal applications leaves guests feeling pampered, beautiful and regal. You are not only in close proximity of the Royal Palace but you also experience the royal Bhutanese treatments.

Experiences Trashi Chho Dzong is the largest and the most impressive dzong in Thimphu. The 17th-century Semtokha Dzong is one of the oldest dzongs in the valley. In the town, Voluntary Artist Studio of Thimphu (VAST) is creating traditional and contemporary works. Textile Museum is famous for its handmade textile, while Folk Museum and Royal Academy of Performing Arts are home of the Royal Dance Troupe. Attend the weekend Market to meet the locals.

Location Amankora Thimphu is a peaceful retreat located on a ridge overlooking Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city.

Getting There Flights to Bhutan are either from Bangkok or New Delhi. Bangkok is the best place to connect if you are coming from North America, Australia or Asia. Delhi is the best place to connect if you are coming from Europe, Middle East or UK. Flights from Delhi fly via Kathmandu. We will arrange your flight tickets and visa clearance details. All flights arrive at Paro from where it takes about 1-hour drive to Thimphu.

When to go Winter in Bhutan lasts from November to March. The spring months of March, April and May, are best for treks, flora and the many birds of Bhutan. The Monsoon occurs between June and August. The two-month window between October and November are arguably the best months with clear skies and chilly nights. It is also a good time for trekking into the Himalayas, sitting around a camp fire and seeing the high Himalayas in the morning and evening golden light.
