One of the main attractions in Kratie is the opportunity to see endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in their natural habitat. The Kampi Dolphin Pool, located about 15 km north of Kratie town, is the prime viewing spot. Take a boat ride on the Mekong River and, with luck, witness these gentle creatures up close. The best time to visit is from January to May when water levels are low, increasing chances of sighting these elusive mammals.
Just a short ferry ride from Kratie lies the picturesque Koh Trong Island. Rent a bicycle and explore the island's lush surroundings, with its traditional stilt houses, rice fields, and fruit orchards. Visit the floating village, learn about local silk weaving techniques, or plant a tree at the island's reforestation project. The island provides an excellent opportunity to experience rural Cambodian life and indulge in delicious home-cooked meals at a local homestay.
Kratie's town center is a treasure trove of well-preserved French colonial buildings that line its riverfront promenade. Don't forget to visit the renovated colonial-era Governor's Mansion, a beautiful example of Kratie's architectural heritage.
Venture to the nearby district of Sambor to visit the historical Wat Sorsor Moi Roi, also known as the 100 Pillar Pagoda. This ancient Buddhist temple, built during the Chenla Empire, features 116 wooden columns and intricate carvings. A significant site for local people, it is believed to house the remains of a revered 16th-century Cambodian royal family member.
Located on a small hill north of Kratie, Phnom Sombok Temple offers panoramic views of the Mekong River and surrounding landscape. Climb the Naga-themed staircase to reach this peaceful temple, adorned with murals depicting the life of Buddha. It's an ideal spot for meditation or simply enjoying the sunset over the Mekong.
No visit to Kratie is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Head to the bustling Kratie Central Market to savor traditional Cambodian dishes like num banh chok (Khmer noodles), bai sach chrouk (grilled pork with rice), and lap Khmer (lime-marinated beef salad).
