Hanoi to Kunming – 18 Days
This 18-day journey traces a rich overland route from Vietnam into China’s Yunnan province, offering a deep dive into the cultural and natural heritage of both countries. Begin in Hanoi’s bustling streets, then cruise the emerald waters of Halong Bay and explore the hill villages of Sapa, where minority communities still live traditional lives. From peaceful pagodas to vibrant local markets, the Vietnamese leg introduces you to a land of contrasts—ancient temples, colonial streets, and rural highlands, with remarkable heritage sites and unique architecture enriching every step of the journey.
Crossing into China, the trail continues through southern Yunnan, where rice terraces cascade down mountainsides in Yuanyang and historic towns like Jianshui and Shaxi reveal a slower pace of life. Visit Lijiang’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, the towering peaks of Jade Dragon Mountain, and the surreal Stone Forest of Shilin. This is a journey shaped by landscapes, people, and time—ideal for travellers seeking meaningful encounters with friendly locals, immersive village life, visits to local villages, authentic interactions with local people, traditional culture, and scenic diversity across borders.
HANOI AND HALONG BAY EXPERIENCES: Explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and lakeside pagodas before joining a scenic boat trip through Halong Bay’s limestone karsts. With overnight stays on a traditional junk boat, enjoy kayaking, a delightful lunch and seafood feasts served on board, and sunrises over the water—an iconic Vietnam experience blending cultural discovery with natural beauty.
SAPA AND NORTHERN VIETNAM MINORITIES: Start your day with a hearty breakfast before trekking through rice paddies and meeting ethnic communities like the Black Hmong in Sapa’s remote highlands. Visit a local market and villages, learning about traditional crafts, daily life, and participate in a hands-on cooking class for an immersive culinary experience. The cool mountain air and authentic encounters offer a peaceful contrast to the city bustle of Hanoi.
YUANYANG RICE TERRACES IN YUNNAN: Cross into China and witness the UNESCO-listed rice terraces of Yuanyang, sculpted by the Hani people. Sunrise at Duoyishu and sunset at Laohuzui provide unforgettable views. Markets and scenic walks reveal the region’s rich agricultural traditions and the harmony between humans and nature.
LIJIANG, SHAXI AND ANCIENT TOWNS: Discover Lijiang’s cobbled streets, the Mu Palace, and mountain views. Visit Shaxi, a beautifully preserved town on the Tea Horse Road, and explore Buddhist caves at Shibaoshan. These towns reveal the cultural layers of Yunnan, combining architecture, folklore, and history in a stunning natural setting.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

In the afternoon take a guided bicycle tour through quieter neighbourhoods, lakes, hidden temples and street cafes, or enjoy a leisurely stroll to soak in the local atmosphere. This is a different side of the city—slower, more peaceful and local. In the evening enjoy a traditional water puppet show, where wooden figures perform folk tales on a stage of water, with live music and storytelling. After the show, consider dining at a local restaurant to experience authentic Vietnamese cuisine. It’s a unique and fun way to experience Vietnam’s artistic traditions.
