Halmahera to Sorong – 12 Days
Sail through the remote eastern isles of Indonesia on this immersive journey from the historic Spice Islands of Halmahera to the marine paradise of Raja Ampat. Begin in Ternate and explore Halmahera’s diverse cultural landscape, forested mountains, and villages steeped in ancient traditions. Trace the region’s role in the spice trade and World War II, and enjoy opportunities for rainforest walks and reef snorkelling.
Cross into the untouched beauty of Raja Ampat, known for its turquoise waters, limestone islets, and incredible marine biodiversity. Visit Wayag, Waigeo, Gam, and Wai islands — each offering a mix of adventure and relaxation. From wildlife sightings and local encounters to coral gardens and war relics, this island-hopping voyage blends nature, history, and culture in one unforgettable experience. Designed for the curious traveller, this small-ship expedition offers both comfort and connection with places few have the chance to explore.
HALMAHERA’S CULTURAL HEART: Experience the cultural diversity of Halmahera, where Christian and Muslim communities live side by side. Visit historic churches, small villages, and heritage sites. Learn about the island’s role in the spice trade and meet local residents for an authentic look at daily life in this remote part of Indonesia.
WWII HISTORY ON MOROTAI: Step back in time on Morotai Island, a significant World War II site. Explore the remnants of Japanese bases and Allied airstrips hidden in the jungle. Combine historical discovery with stunning scenery as you relax on pristine beaches that once saw some of the Pacific War’s fiercest military activity.
RAJA AMPAT’S MARINE PARADISE: Snorkel in Raja Ampat’s world-renowned coral reefs, home to manta rays, tropical fish, and sea turtles. Visit the Wayag Islands and explore hidden lagoons, white sand beaches, and limestone cliffs. This unspoiled marine ecosystem offers unforgettable underwater adventures in one of the most biodiverse seas on the planet.
REMOTE ISLANDS & WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS: Venture into the wild interiors of Halmahera and Raja Ampat. Walk through rainforest trails, spot rare birds like the Wilson’s bird-of-paradise, and visit villages accessible only by boat. With expert local guides, discover a side of Indonesia untouched by mass tourism and rich in natural and cultural beauty.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

Journey through Indonesia’s remote east, from Halmahera’s cultural heart to Raja Ampat’s pristine reefs. Explore volcanic islands, historic war sites, coral gardens, and hidden villages. This small-ship expedition offers a rare mix of nature, history, and local life—perfect for curious travellers seeking adventure off the beaten path.
You start your journey with a scenic sail from Ternate to Jailolo Bay on Halmahera Island. This area is culturally rich with both Muslim and Christian communities. Visit the old Controller’s House and the nearby community centre with local artefacts. The peaceful bay with a volcanic backdrop is waiting to be explored. Walk along the shore, meet the locals and enjoy the laid back island life. With history and nature, Jailolo is a gentle introduction to the Maluku Islands and sets the tone for what’s to come.
Sail along the west coast of Halmahera. From the deck you can see lush green mountains rising from narrow beaches with remote villages. The forested slopes and isolated shores show the raw beauty of the island. Later in the day sail into Loloda Bay. Once the heart of a 13th century kingdom this wide shallow bay is full of history. You won’t disembark but the view from the water gives you time to reflect on the region’s past. As the sun sets behind the hills the ship anchors in calm water and you can have a peaceful end of the day.
Today you visit the northernmost islands of Loloda, once under the rule of the Ternate and Tidore sultans. Anchor at Kampung Dama on Pulau Doi and go ashore to experience village life. Join a short trek in the forest to find a hidden waterfall believed by the locals to have healing powers. For snorkellers and divers the nearby coral reefs are full of colourful marine life. The setting is quiet and far from modernity. Back on the ship for dinner under the stars with the sounds of the sea and forest all around – a wild night in the Moluccas.
Sail to the northern tip of Halmahera and reach Morotai, a beautiful island with white sand beaches and turquoise water. Start your day with snorkelling or just relax on the beach. Morotai was also a key location during World War II. Visit the old Japanese airbase at Kao Bay where abandoned war relics now lie silent among palm trees and jungle. The contrast between history and paradise is striking. Spend the afternoon thinking about the island’s dual identity – peaceful today but with a turbulent past. Back on the ship for another peaceful night anchored near this tropical haven.
Today you return to Halmahera and visit Tobelo, the capital of North Halmahera. With a population of around 15,000 the town is lively yet laid back with Christian, Muslim and indigenous influences. Visit the old Protestant church and enjoy the market. In the afternoon sail south to Kau Bay and anchor at Subaim. This small village is the gateway to the lesser known areas of Halmahera. As the sun sets relax on deck with the jungle clad coastline in view and look forward to tomorrow’s journey into the heart of the island’s protected wilderness.
Today’s adventure starts with a guided trek into Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park. Home to rare animals and over 20 bird species found nowhere else it’s a paradise for wildlife lovers. A local guide from the Tugutil tribe will share his knowledge of the forest and its many hidden wonders. Listen to the bird calls and the rustling of monkeys in the treetops. This lush remote ecosystem will give you an intimate look at Halmahera’s untouched biodiversity. After the trek get back on the ship and sail north to Cape Leelai, cruising past dramatic cliffs and dense rainforest as the sun sets over the island.
Arrive at Watam, a small isolated village near Buli Bay surrounded by coconut plantations and jungle. This remote coastal community is only accessible by sea and offers a rare chance to see life untouched by tourism. Walk through the village, meet the locals and see their daily routines. Enjoy the peaceful pace and beautiful scenery – tall palms, quiet beaches and glassy bays. After lunch on board start the overnight sail to the Raja Ampat Archipelago. Relax on deck as your ship leaves Halmahera behind and sails west into the famous waters of one of the world’s most beautiful island groups.
Wake up surrounded by the stunning limestone islets of Wayag, Raja Ampat’s most iconic region. Spend the day in this dreamlike setting – paddle through narrow channels, climb one of the islets for a panoramic view or relax on white sandy beaches. The water is crystal clear perfect for swimming and snorkelling. This region is called “The Four Kings” after the North Moluccan sultans. Here time seems to have stood still. In the evening the ship anchors in a quiet bay and you can have a peaceful night under the stars in this untouched marine paradise.
Sail to Waigeo, the largest island in Raja Ampat, keeping an eye out for dolphins and sea eagles along the way. Anchor in Fofak Bay if possible and go ashore to discover the island’s lush interior. Walk through jungle paths to hidden waterfalls or visit a local village to see daily life. Waigeo’s landscape is a mix of hills and limestone peaks rising from the sea. Birdwatchers may also spot rare species like the Wilson’s bird-of-paradise. Today is a perfect combination of exploration, nature and culture on one of Raja Ampat’s most diverse and rewarding islands.
Sail through the Dampier Strait, famous for its rich marine life. Your destination is Gam Island, known for its coral gardens and pearl farms. The scenery is breathtaking – green islands floating in blue water, fringed by reefs. Snorkel or kayak in calm bays where sea turtles and colourful fish thrive. Walk along the beach or visit a pearl farm to see how these treasures are cultivated. The island is peaceful with hardly any signs of modern life. As the ship anchors for the night enjoy a peaceful evening in this tropical paradise surrounded by the sound of waves and birdsong.
Today you visit Wai Island, a small beautiful island with white sandy beaches and some of the best snorkelling in the region. The coral reefs are vibrant and full of life and if you’re lucky you might see manta rays swimming through the water. Wai also has two sunken aircraft from World War II, now home to fish and coral growth – perfect for experienced divers or snorkellers. Spend the day swimming, relaxing and enjoying the natural peace of this remote island. As the sun sets enjoy your last night on board and reflect on the amazing journey you’ve had.
After breakfast sail back to Sorong across calm waters. As the coastline appears take in your last views of Raja Ampat. Disembark the ship and say goodbye to the crew. A transfer will take you to Sorong airport for your flight home and you’ll bring back the memories of this island hopping adventure in eastern Indonesia.
