Luzon, Bicol & Whale Shark Adventure

Manila to Manila – 10 Days

This 10-day journey explores a less conventional side of the Philippines, linking the cultural highlands of Northern Luzon with the volcanic landscapes and marine encounters of the Bicol region. Beginning in Manila, the route heads north into the Cordillera Mountains to discover Banaue’s extraordinary rice terraces, the traditional communities of Ifugao, the museum collections of Bontoc and the distinctive burial heritage of Sagada. The journey continues through Baguio and Clark, where an excursion to Mount Pinatubo adds a dramatic volcanic dimension to the itinerary.

From there, fly south to Legazpi, where the focus shifts to Mayon Volcano and the wildlife-rich waters of Donsol. Here, subject to conditions, there is the chance to encounter whale sharks in their natural habitat, one of the Philippines’ most memorable marine experiences. Combined with an ATV excursion beneath Mayon and a short exploration of Albay’s cultural landmarks, this itinerary offers a varied overview of Luzon’s mountain cultures, volcanic scenery and remarkable biodiversity.

Highlights

BANAUE RICE TERRACES AND IFUGAO HIGHLANDS: Journey into the uplands of Northern Luzon, where the Banaue Rice Terraces form one of the Philippines’ most remarkable cultural landscapes. Hand-carved into steep mountain slopes over centuries, these terraces reflect the ingenuity, resilience and agricultural traditions of the Ifugao people. Travelling through the region brings sweeping mountain views, traditional villages and a powerful sense of place. Far removed from the country’s better-known beaches, this is a deeper encounter with the Philippines’ highland heritage, shaped by landscape, community and living culture.

SAGADA HANGING COFFINS AND CORDILLERA CULTURE: Sagada offers one of the most distinctive cultural experiences in the Philippines, set among cool mountain scenery, pine forests and limestone formations. Known for its hanging coffins, burial caves and enduring local traditions, the town reveals a very different side of Filipino heritage. Combined with Bontoc Museum and overland travel through the Cordillera range, this section highlights the diversity of Luzon’s upland communities. Atmospheric, culturally rich and visually dramatic, it provides a rewarding contrast to the Philippines’ coastal image.

MOUNT PINATUBO AND MAYON VOLCANO ADVENTURE: This journey features two of the Philippines’ most iconic volcanic landscapes, each with its own character. Mount Pinatubo offers a dramatic excursion through terrain transformed by the powerful 1991 eruption, with ash fields, open valleys and a strong sense of remoteness. Further south, Mayon Volcano delivers a striking visual contrast: elegant, symmetrical and instantly recognisable above Legazpi. An ATV ride near its base adds a light adventure element, making this a rewarding experience for travellers drawn to scenery, geology and active exploration.

DONSOL WHALE SHARK ENCOUNTER: A memorable highlight is the chance to encounter whale sharks off Donsol, one of the Philippines’ best-known locations for observing these gentle giants in their natural environment. The experience is nature-led, with sightings dependent on sea conditions and guided by local spotters. When conditions allow, snorkelling near the world’s largest fish is an extraordinary wildlife privilege. This marine encounter adds an unforgettable dimension to the tour, balancing mountain culture and volcanic landscapes with one of the Philippines’ most remarkable natural experiences.

DAY 1

Manila

Arrive in Manila, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is left free to recover from the journey, depending on your arrival time. You may simply relax at the hotel or, if energy allows, begin to absorb the atmosphere of the Philippine capital at your own pace. Manila is a dynamic, fast-moving city where Spanish colonial history, modern high-rises and local street life sit side by side. This first day is intentionally unhurried, allowing time to settle in comfortably before your overland journey north into the dramatic mountain landscapes of Luzon begins.

Hotel Options:
Resort

The Peninsula Manila

The Peninsula Manila, located in the heart of Makati, Manila’s bustling financial district, offers a luxurious and elegant retreat for both business and leisure travellers. Renowned for its iconic façade and grand lobby, the hotel combines timeless sophistication with modern amenities. Its prime location provides easy access to upscale shopping centres, cultural landmarks, and vibrant nightlife, making it an ideal base for exploring the city.

DAY 2

Banaue

Leave Manila this morning and begin the long but rewarding overland journey north to Banaue in Ifugao Province, travelling through the changing landscapes of central and northern Luzon. En route, stop in Bacolor, one of the towns most dramatically affected by the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Here, visit St Guillermo Church, often called the “half-buried church”, a striking reminder of the devastation caused by lahars that engulfed much of the area. Continue north by road, with lunch along the way, as the scenery gradually shifts from lowland plains to mountain roads. Arrive in Banaue by evening and check in for your overnight stay.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:
Resort

Banaue Grandview Hotel

Banaue Grand View Hotel is a modern hillside hotel above Banaue, designed to capitalise on the setting: large windows, terraces and open common areas oriented towards the Cordillera landscape and (from the right angles) the rice-terrace scenery. It’s a straightforward, comfortable base in a region where accommodation tends to be simple.

The property is small and easy to navigate, with around 13 rooms. Rooms are contemporary in style and generally more spacious than typical local options; many categories include private balconies, which can be worth prioritising for the views.

Facilities are focused on the essentials for a restful night in Banaue: an on-site restaurant with terrace-facing views, plus practical services such as a tour desk/concierge support and on-site parking. It works well as an overnight stop before early starts for viewpoint visits and terrace walks.

DAY 3

Sagada

This morning, explore the remarkable landscapes and living traditions of Banaue by local jeepney, a fitting way to travel through this mountainous region. Along the roadside, everyday scenes reveal the ingenuity of Ifugao life, from hillside homes and fish ponds to small-scale farming and village activity. Stop at key viewpoints to admire the celebrated Banaue Rice Terraces, an extraordinary hand-carved mountain landscape created over centuries with remarkable engineering skill and a carefully managed irrigation system. In shifting light and mountain mist, the terraces appear almost like steps rising into the clouds. Later, continue towards Sagada, pausing at scenic vantage points and visiting Bontoc Museum for insight into the cultures of the northern mountain peoples. Arrive in Sagada this evening and settle into your local inn.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:
Resort

Masferre Country Inn, Sagada

Masferré Country Inn, Sagada is a long-established mountain inn in the centre of Sagada, well placed for exploring the town on foot and visiting its surrounding caves, terraces and viewpoints. Its appeal lies more in location, local atmosphere and heritage than in polished resort style.

Rooms are simple, clean and functional, with a more traditional and modest feel than newer hotels. The property is named after photographer Eduardo Masferré, and this cultural connection gives it more character than many basic provincial stays.

Facilities include a restaurant, Wi-Fi, hot showers, breakfast and a veranda. Overall, it is a practical and characterful base for touring in Sagada.

DAY 4

Baguio

After breakfast, discover some of Sagada’s most distinctive traditions and landscapes. Visit one of the town’s burial caves and take a short walk to see the famous hanging coffins, one of the region’s most enduring cultural practices, set dramatically against limestone cliffs and pine-covered slopes. You will also stop at a local weaving house, where traditional hand-loom weaving continues as part of daily community life. Afterwards, set out along the Halsema Highway, one of the Philippines’ most scenic mountain roads, crossing the Cordillera range through highland settlements and terraced vegetable fields. By late afternoon, arrive in Baguio, the country’s well-known hill station and summer capital, and check in for the night.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:
Resort

Sotogrande Hotel Baguio

Sotogrande Hotel Baguio is a modern upper-mid-range hotel on Leonard Wood Road, set among Baguio’s pine-covered hills and well placed for access to the city’s main sights. Its setting feels quieter than the busier commercial centre, making it a practical base for short leisure stays.

Rooms are contemporary and functional, with a clean, comfortable style rather than local character. They are designed for convenience and relaxation, suiting couples, families and city-based touring itineraries.

Facilities include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, fitness centre and Wi-Fi. Overall, it is a polished and dependable Baguio stay with good facilities and a restful hillside setting.

Resort

DAY 5

Clark

This morning is left at leisure in Baguio, giving you a slower start after several days of mountain travel. Depending on the schedule, there may be time to relax at the hotel or simply enjoy the cooler highland atmosphere before continuing south. Later, depart by road for Clark, descending from the Cordillera highlands back towards the central plains of Luzon. The journey marks a clear transition from the rugged scenery and traditional cultures of the north to a more modern transport hub setting. On arrival in Clark, transfer to your hotel and check in. The remainder of the day is free to rest and prepare for the next stage of the journey.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:
Resort

Quest Plus Conference Centre, Clark

Quest Plus Conference Centre, Clark is a contemporary upper-mid-range hotel within the Filinvest Mimosa+ Leisure Estate in Clark, close to the airport and well positioned for both business events and leisure stays. Its setting gives it a more spacious, self-contained feel than a standard city hotel.

Accommodation includes 304 rooms and villas, with a modern, practical style focused on comfort and functionality rather than local character. Higher categories add more space and club-style benefits, making it suitable for families, longer stays and blended business-leisure trips.

Facilities include strong MICE infrastructure, dining, leisure amenities and event space. Overall, it is one of Clark’s more versatile stays, especially for travellers wanting comfort, convenience and conference capability in one property.

DAY 6

Manila

After breakfast, set out for one of Luzon’s most dramatic natural excursions: Mount Pinatubo. Reached via an adventurous approach through striking volcanic terrain, this journey combines rugged scenery, open landscapes and a rewarding sense of remoteness. The route leads towards the crater area of the volcano, whose catastrophic 1991 eruption reshaped both the surrounding countryside and the communities beyond. Today, the area presents a starkly beautiful landscape of ash fields, riverbeds and mountain backdrops, making it one of the Philippines’ most compelling outdoor experiences. After the excursion, continue by road to Manila, where you will check in for an overnight stay.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Hotel Options:

The Peninsula Manila

The Peninsula Manila, located in the heart of Makati, Manila’s bustling financial district, offers a luxurious and elegant retreat for both business and leisure travellers. DAY 7

LEGAZPI CITY

This morning is at leisure until your scheduled transfer to the domestic airport for your flight south to Legazpi, the main gateway to the Bicol region. On arrival at Daraga Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is free to relax or settle in at your own pace. Legazpi is best known for its close relationship with the perfectly formed Mayon Volcano, whose symmetrical cone dominates much of the surrounding landscape. Depending on weather and visibility, you may already catch your first views of this iconic peak, which will feature prominently in the coming days.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Hotel Options:

The Marison Hotel, Legazpi

The hotel has 119 rooms and suites with a modern, polished style, combining clean-lined interiors with a more refined feel than many standard provincial city hotels. Rooms are designed for comfort and convenience rather than local character, making it a practical but smart touring base.

Facilities include dining venues, event space, a swimming pool, fitness facilities, spa services and airport transfers.

DAY 8

LEGAZPI CITY

Today brings one of the tour’s most memorable wildlife encounters as you travel to Donsol, one of the best-known places in the Philippines to observe whale sharks in the wild. Unlike captive or highly managed settings, the experience here is based on natural sightings in open water, making each encounter feel genuinely special. Accompanied by local spotters and guides, head out by boat in search of these gentle giants and, conditions permitting, enter the water to snorkel nearby and observe them respectfully in their natural habitat. The experience usually lasts around three to four hours and offers an extraordinary connection with one of the ocean’s largest creatures.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 9

LEGAZPI CITY

Today is devoted to adventure at the foot of Mayon Volcano, one of the most recognisable and photogenic volcanoes in Asia. By ATV, explore trails that cut through rugged countryside shaped by past eruptions, crossing varied terrain with striking views towards Mayon’s near-perfect cone. This is an active and enjoyable way to experience the volcano’s immediate landscape, combining scenery, excitement and a closer sense of the region’s raw geological character. The route and duration can vary according to the chosen schedule, but the experience typically lasts three to four hours including briefing, transfers and the ride itself. The remainder of the day is free at leisure back in Legazpi.

Meals Included: Breakfast

DAY 10

MANILA - DEPARTURE

After breakfast, enjoy a half-day exploration of Albay, a region where history, heritage and volcanic scenery come together in a compact but rewarding circuit. Highlights typically include the evocative Cagsawa Ruins, with their famous church tower framed by Mayon in the background, the hilltop Daraga Church, and scenic stops such as Sumlang Lake and Legazpi Boulevard. Together, these sites offer a final perspective on the cultural identity and landscape of southern Luzon. Afterwards, transfer to Bicol International Airport for your flight back to Manila. On arrival, connect with your international departure or continue onward for the next stage of your journey.

Meals Included: Breakfast

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

GROUP, SUPPORT STAFF & TRIP STYLE: This is a small-group cultural and soft-adventure journey exploring Northern Luzon and the Bicol region by road, domestic flight and selected local transport. The trip is led by local guides, with drivers and additional local support used where appropriate for particular excursions and transfers. The style is more experiential than luxury-focused, combining mountain culture, scenic overland travel, volcanic landscapes and wildlife encounters. Some days are longer and more transit-led, particularly in the north, but these journeys are part of the experience. Flexibility, patience and a positive attitude are important, as local conditions, weather and traffic can affect timings and the order of activities.

ACCOMMODATION, MEAL PLAN, FOOD & WATER: Accommodation varies from simple to comfortable depending on the region. In Manila, Clark and Legazpi, hotels are generally comfortable tourist-class properties. In Banaue and Sagada, accommodation is more modest, with choices shaped by location and limited mountain infrastructure rather than by high-end comfort. Breakfast is included daily, with lunch and dinner included on selected touring days, especially during the Northern Luzon overland section. Food is typically local or simple tourist-style cuisine, with more limited choice in the highlands than in major cities. Bottled or purified drinking water should be used throughout the journey, and travellers should avoid untreated tap water.

HEALTH, FITNESS & TERRAIN: This tour is suitable for reasonably active travellers who are comfortable with long drives, early starts, uneven ground and a few more active excursions. While it is not a strenuous trekking journey, it does include short walks, steps, rougher paths and outdoor activities such as the Mount Pinatubo excursion, viewing sites in Sagada, and the Mayon ATV experience. The whale shark activity in Donsol is conducted in natural conditions and may involve boat travel, snorkelling and sea movement depending on weather and sightings. Travellers should be in good general health, have a normal level of mobility, and be comfortable with variable terrain, shifting schedules and a more adventurous touring rhythm than a conventional resort holiday.

WHALE SHARKS, VOLCANOES AND OUTDOOR EXCURSIONS: Several highlights are nature- and conditions-dependent. Whale shark encounters in Donsol take place in the wild, so sightings can never be guaranteed, and sea conditions may affect operations. Mount Pinatubo access can also be influenced by weather, trail conditions or local regulations. The Mayon ATV experience is active but manageable for most travellers with a normal level of mobility and confidence. These excursions are an important part of the tour’s appeal, but they work best for guests who understand that natural conditions shape the experience. A flexible attitude is essential, particularly in a destination where weather and logistics can shift plans.

SPENDING MONEY, CURRENCY & TIPPING: The local currency is the Philippine peso. In larger and regional centres, ATMs are generally available, but access can be more limited in remote mountain areas, so it is wise to carry sufficient cash in smaller denominations during the Northern Luzon section. Personal spending will vary depending on drinks, snacks, optional items and souvenirs. Tipping is customary in the Philippines and is always appreciated for good service. As this is a group tour using drivers, guides and local support staff, it is sensible to budget for tips across the journey. Exact amounts can be advised before departure, but travellers should allow a modest amount for guides, drivers, hotel porters and restaurant staff where appropriate.

PASSPORTS, VISAS, BAGGAGE, CLIMATE & INSURANCE: Travellers should carry a valid passport with adequate validity beyond the end of the trip and should ensure they meet the Philippines entry requirements applicable at the time of travel. Baggage should be kept reasonably manageable, as this tour involves multiple hotel changes, road transfers and domestic flights. A soft bag or medium-sized suitcase plus a daypack usually works well. Climate varies by region and elevation: the Cordillera highlands can be cooler, particularly in the mornings and evenings, while lowland and southern areas are warmer and more humid. Light layers, sun protection and a light waterproof are advisable. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential and should cover medical expenses, cancellations, delays and the tour’s adventure activities where applicable.
