The Famous Farm: Heritage Boutique Hotel in Nepal

The Famous Farm is a restored farmhouse, set in the small village of Nuwakot, 1-hr and 30-mins drive northwest of Kathmandu in Nepal. Situated just above Nuwakot Durbar this heritage hotel was created from the shell of a Newari manor house, once inhabited by the commander of the nearby army garrison. The result, it offers a perfect place with a mix of simplicity and traditional luxury for guests to enjoy an authentic rural experience in the heart of the Nepal Himalayas.

Situated just above Nuwakot Durbar, the Famous Farm features just 13 rooms, spread over three buildings, set around an open courtyard. Each room has a traditional Newari design and architecture; open beamed ceilings, whitewashed brick walls, beautifully hand crafted wooden windows and balconies. Each building overlooks the Ganesh Himal and is surrounded by lovely gardens where home-cooked, delicious meals are served in the day and by lantern-lit at night.

Guests at the Famous Farm occupy themselves exploring the nearby nature trails offering majestic views of Ganesh Himal and of the Trisuli river valley in the distance. Nuwakot village is rich in its culture and traditions and hosts many celebrations during the summer months. These include Bull Fighting, Rice Plantation festival and worshipping of its own Living Goddess, Kumari. Near the hotel is Nuwakot Durbar, an 18th-Century, seven-tier pagoda with temples and palaces.

Stay Famous Farm in Nuwakot features just 13 rooms. These include 6 rooms on the first floor of the manor house and the rest in the adjoining two buildings, set around an open courtyard. All are individually decorated in traditional style and except for two rooms have en-suite bathrooms with a shower and one has old era claw-footed enamel bath. Fortunately, there’s no wi-fi and mobile phone reception is limited that keeps you focussed on the surrounding nature.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at the Famous Farm in Nuwakot but there are no specific facilities available for children. There are two inter-connecting rooms in the smaller of the three buildings that are suitable for families.

Dine The in-house restaurant at the Famous Farm serves home-cooked traditional Nepali cuisine with some Western favourites. Meals are prepared with fresh ingredients sourced from their own organic farm in the surrounds. Breakfast and lunch is a mix of Western and Nepali style while dinners usually have Nepali cuisine, such as Nepali Thali, served in the ground-floor dining room in the Mansion or al fresco in a romantic lantern-lit environment. All meals are included in the rate.

Relax There are lots of spaces within the Famous Farm to relax. Take a leisurely stroll of their organic farm, set on eight terraces, walk around the neighbouring village and enjoy the hospitality of the locals or take a nature walk in the surrounds. Nuwakot is at a low altitude with a southerly aspect which means, it’s usually pleasant during the day and evenings. Evenings are usually spent relaxing in the Farm garden with fine views of the Trisuli River Valley below.

Experience The small village of Nuwakot (meaning nine forts), lies 1-hr and 30-mins drive northwest of Kathmandu. In the recent past, it has gained a reputation as one of Nepal's best travel secrets with Famous Farm offering the best accommodation. The area is known for nature trails offering majestic views of snow-capped Ganesh Himal, local villages untouched with modernisation and historical forts. These include the seven-storey, the famous 18th-century Durbar Square or royal palace.

Location Famous Farm is located in Nuwakot to the north of Kathmandu.

Getting there Fly to Kathmandu via Delhi or the Middle East (13-hours), followed by a 3-hour 30-minute drive.

When to go Nepal has a Monsoonal climate with four main seasons. Autumn and spring are the two most favourable seasons for visiting Nepal. Autumn (September to early December) brings in clear weather with sunny days and warm nights. Spring (March to May) with occasional rain falls. From June to September, is the monsoon season. Uncomfortable time to visit as the climate of Nepal at this time of year brings about hot weather and rain falls almost every day.
