Shangri-La Hotel, Kathmandu, Nepal - Asian Geographical Adventures

Shangri-La Hotel, is not part of the International Shangri-La group but it’s one of the comfortable properties in Kathmandu. The hotel is located a short distance from Thamel, the soul of Kathmandu.  Set amongst spacious gardens, it has an old world classic feel to it and is luxurious by Nepalese standards. The entrance area is large with a touch of old British colonialism; on arrival, a uniformed doorman comes to attention, salutes and holds the door open for you.

Shangri-La Hotel, Kathmandu has 100 rooms. The lead in Deluxe Room are of a nice size and overlook the gardens. Mattress is on the firm side but comfortable. Desk a bit narrow but good for work. Heating is old but effective. Room service menu is concise but enough. Hardwood floors, mini fridge and a large safe to fit your laptop. Bathroom has a bathtub with a shower and the sink has a large countertop with plenty of space for cosmetics.

There are four restaurants and cafes at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kathmandu. Breakfast is plentiful and served by the beautiful garden. The Shambala Garden Cafe serves Pizzas and Chinese delicacies. For Indian specialities try the Saffron restaurant on the second floor. The medium sized pool is good for a refreshing splash and a few laps if you don’t mind turning a lot. But the highlight is surely the wonderful gardens where you can stroll in peace.

When to go Nepal like the rest of the Gangetic plains has four seasons. Autumn and spring are the two most favourable seasons for visiting Nepal. The Spring (March to May) is good for treks when forests are full of rhododendrons in bloom. The heat wave runs through May until monsoon arrives in mid-June and stays until August. But in September, when the rains stop, the weather is balmy, the air is crip and the sky is clear; it is the perfect time to visit Nepal.
