Eastern & Oriental Express

The Eastern & Oriental Express of Belmond Collection, is a luxurious train that operates 4 days, 2,000-km journey from Bangkok to Singapore via the Malay Peninsula (or vice versa), with stops at the Bridge on the River Kwai and Penang. The voyage recreates the golden age of rail travel, of colonial-style and opulence but its philosophy is best expressed by its exterior artwork called ‘The Koi Pond’ which depicts the joy of travel, movement and the coming together of friends and family.

Inside, there are 40 cabins in four categories. Accommodations are compact but more than serviceable, with two twin beds that fold up during the day and a private shower. The rooms are decorated with rich fabrics and inlaid wood. Fresh fruit and orchids are arranged on the windowsill. Life aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express follows a basic schedule: an early breakfast followed by some off-train excursions, lunch and traveling in the afternoon, then a formal dinner.

Some of the best seats on the Eastern & Oriental Express are in the open-air observation car, which has uninterrupted views of the countryside and handy proximity to the bar. Many of the passengers gather here in the afternoons to enjoy the scenery and socialize, continuing during the meals where a new seating plan is made to encourage conversation among the guests. The result is that by the end of the journey, you would have possibly met all of the 60-odd travellers on board.

Stay The Eastern & Oriental Express has 40 cabins in four categories. The 30 Pullman Cabins (6 sqm) are configured as private lounges with banquette style sofas, which at night converts into an upper and lower bed. While the State Cabins (8 sqm) and the luxurious Presidential Cabin (12 sqm), both convert into two single beds at night. All are fully air-conditioned with en-suite shower and toilet. There is also Single cabins available, without single supplement.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express train, however, there are no specific facilities available for children. However, followers of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and The Polar Express will love the train adventure and all of the discoveries to be made en route.

Dine Lunch and dinner on the Eastern & Oriental Express are served in the two Restaurant Cars, while a breakfast of croissants, fruit, coffee, tea and juice is delivered to your cabin daily. Each of the seasonally changing menus is created exclusively for the Eastern & Oriental Express by onboard chefs, incorporating the finest locally sourced ingredients. There is also a Bar Car that is open all-day. Day Wear is smart casual.  The dress code during dinner is usually relatively formal.

Relax Masters of the art of luxury train travel, Eastern & Orient Express provides the perfect balance between leisure on board and inspiring excursions afield. Relax in the Saloon Car with a book or magazine or choose from a selection of games. The Piano Bar is open all day and hosts a resident pianist and after dinner local musicians and dancers give mesmerising cultural performances.

Experience The Eastern & Oriental Express makes scheduled stops at points of interest from where tours and excursions are conducted by expert local guides. You will visit Thailand's temples, experience Malaysia's mix of cultures, take birds eye view from the Singapore skyscrapers and enjoy the fascinating landlocked landscape of Laos. The train also has a colonial style, teakwood Observation Car located at the rear of the train, another wonderful place to observe the scenery.
