Islamabad to Islamabad – 13 days
The Rush Lake Trek blends big Karakoram views with the quiet charm of Hunza. After a scenic run up the Karakoram Highway, Karimabad greets you with steep stone lanes, the timbered balconies of Baltit Fort, and ancient burber channels feeding orchards of apricot and walnut. Clear evenings often bring a show: Rakaposhi and Diran glowing above the valley while cafés serve hot chapshuro, nutty breads and simple apricot cakes. It’s a gentle introduction to a region few travellers reach, where village life still feels close to the land.
From quieter Hoper in Nagar, the trail climbs through terraces and moraine to Baricho Kor, then on to Rush Lake (4,694 m)—a high, wind-bright bowl that mirrors snow peaks on calm days. An optional walk to Rush Peak (about 5,560 m) opens a vast skyline of Spantik, Malubiting, Miar and Diran. Nights are crisp, stars sharp, mornings clear and blue. Descending via Phahi Phari and Hamdar, you return to Hunza with a head full of mountain light—an unforgettable, short high-altitude adventure in a place that still feels wonderfully undiscovered.
RUSH LAKE & OPTIONAL RUSH PEAK: Camp beside Rush Lake at 4,694 metres, a high-altitude basin often turquoise in summer and rimmed with snow. Take an optional, non-technical ascent of Rush Peak (5,560 m) for vast Karakoram panoramas including Spantik, Malubiting, Miar and Diran. Expect cold nights, early starts, steady pacing, and rewarding summit photos too.
HUNZA CULTURE: KARIMABAD & BALTIT FORT: Explore Karimabad’s steep stone lanes, visit Baltit Fort for Hunza history, and learn how ancient burber channels irrigate terraced orchards. Shop women-run co-ops for caps, shawls and apricot products. Enjoy sunset viewpoints over the Hunza River, with clear Rakaposhi views from Aliabad on bright days. Gentle, photogenic, culturally rich experiences.
HOPER TO BARICHO KOR TREK: Start trekking from Hoper in tranquil Nagar Valley, crossing terrace paths and moraine towards Baricho Kor. Use poles for loose sections and keep a steady rhythm for acclimatisation. Expect 5–6 hours’ walking, picnic lunch, short acclimatisation stroll on arrival, and cold, starry nights at camp with mountain silhouettes at dusk.
OVERLAND RETURN VIA BABUSAR & TAXILA: Drive the Karakoram Highway south via seasonal Babusar Pass for sweeping meadows and cool mountain air, or the all-weather route via Chilas. Continue to UNESCO-listed Taxila for Gandharan sculpture and an excavated site, time permitting. Finish in Islamabad with a farewell dinner at Saidpur Village overlooking the Margalla Hills tonight.
The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.
Small-group, expert-led and packed into 12 days, this trek pairs Hunza’s culture with high Karakoram scenery. Explore Karimabad and Baltit Fort, then walk from Hoper in Nagar through terraces and moraine to turquoise Rush Lake. Spend crisp nights at camp and, if you’re feeling strong, take the optional non-technical climb to Rush Peak for vast mountain views.
Arrive Islamabad. Meet on arrival and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the morning will be spent at leisure but time permitting, you can take a light city overview in the afternoon. Explore Faisal Mosque, Rawalpindi Old Bazaa or Daman-e-Koh at sunset. Home to the lesser Himalayas, many of the attractions listed offer a bird’s eye view of the capital. Early night.
Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner
Islamabad to Chilas (1,265 m): 8–9 hrs drive. Depart after breakfast via Hazara Motorway to the Karakoram Highway. Expect scenic gorge roads and a few police checkpoints (routine). Lunch stop in Besham or Dassu depending on progress. Arrive Chilas late afternoon, check in. Optional short walk to stretch legs. Chilas is a staging point with limited facilities; stock snacks and cash here (ATMs unreliable beyond this). Guide checks road/landslide updates for Babusar Pass and Hunza. Safety briefing: seatbelts compulsory; carry a fleece and headtorch in your daypack. Dinner at the hotel; hydrate well for tomorrow’s higher sleep.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Chilas to Karimabad, Hunza (2,500 m): 5–6 hrs drive. Continue on the KKH with photo stops at the Nanga Parbat viewpoint and the Indus–Gilgit confluence. In Aliabad, weather permitting, enjoy a superb view of Rakaposhi’s 7,788 m ice dome. Check into Karimabad. Afternoon orientation walk: steep stone lanes, water channels (kuls), cafés and handicraft co-ops selling Hunza caps, shawls and apricot products. Short talk on Burusho culture and local etiquette (ask before photographing people; modest dress in villages). Final kit check for the trek: warm layers, gloves, sun hat, 2–3 litre water capacity, microspikes (early/late season), and dry bags. Early night to aid acclimatisation.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Karimabad to Hoper; trek to Baricho Kor (3,300 m): 5–6 hrs trek. Drive 1–1.5 hours by jeep to Hoper (Nagar). Final water and last fresh fruit available here. Begin trekking on terrace paths towards the Barpu/Hispar glacier approach. Terrain: undulating village trails, then moraine; trekking poles useful. Pace is steady with photo stops to view Ultar Sar and the needle of Bublimotin (Lady Finger). Picnic lunch en route. Arrive Baricho Kor mid-afternoon; camp on level ground away from rockfall lines. Afternoon acclimatisation walk (+100–150 m, 30–40 mins) then hot drinks. Night temperatures can drop below freezing; keep a bottle of warm water in your sleeping bag. Briefing for tomorrow’s longer ascent.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Baricho Kor to Rush Lake (4,694 m): 5–6 hrs trek. A sustained ascent day. Start early to cross stable sections of ridge and moraine while firm. Underfoot: loose rock, occasional snow patches in shoulder seasons; microspikes may help. Gain height gradually with “walk high, rest often” rhythm. Views expand to Miar and Diran as you approach the basin. Reach Rush Lake by mid-afternoon; depending on season it’s a turquoise mirror or partially frozen. Camps are set back from the shore to reduce wind exposure. AMS watch: mild headache, poor sleep and reduced appetite are common—report anything severe. Keep insulated layers handy and protect batteries from cold. Sunset photography is excellent.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Rush Lake; optional Rush Peak (5,560 m): 4–6 hrs round trip. Rest day with an optional non-technical summit of Rush Peak, weather and team fitness permitting. The route is steep scree/snow near the top; helmets and microspikes advised if firm snow remains. Start early for stable conditions and clearer views. Summit panorama typically includes Spantik (Golden Peak), Malubiting, Miar, Diran and Rakaposhi; carry windproofs and warm gloves. Those not summiting can take shorter ridge walks and explore lakeshore viewpoints. Return to camp for hot drinks, stretching and packing for descent. Hydration target: 3–4 litres today. Night temperatures remain sub-zero; sleep with tomorrow’s base layer inside the bag.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Rush Lake to Phahi Phari (3,450 m): 4–5 hrs trek. Descend the ridge with care—loose gravel can be harder on knees than ascent. Poles and a measured pace help. As you drop, temperatures rise and the air feels richer; keep sun protection on as exposure remains strong. Lunch at a sheltered spot out of the wind. Arrive Phahi Phari mid-afternoon and establish camp near water. Optional short walk for leg turnover or simply rest and rehydrate. Guide reviews tomorrow’s route and jeep rendezvous times. Charge devices from the group power bank if carried; phone signal is intermittent to none in camp.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Phahi Phari to Hamdar (3,300 m): 4–5 hrs trek. Gentle downhill with short undulations on mixed moraine and pasture paths. Expect a couple of easy stream crossings; sandals are not required—use waterproof boots and quick steps. Picnic en route. Birdlife increases lower down; keep binoculars handy for choughs and lammergeiers. Arrive Hamdar, set camp and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. Stretching session (hips/calves/quads) recommended to aid recovery before tomorrow’s exit. This is a good evening to tip porters/horsemen privately through the guide if they rotate off tomorrow. Early dinner and stargazing if skies are clear.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hamdar to Hoper; drive to Karimabad (2,500 m): 2–3 hrs trek and 1–1.5 hrs drive. Complete the trek to Hoper by late morning. Celebrate with hot chai and a fresh snack before boarding jeeps back to the KKH. Drive to Karimabad and check into the hotel. Afternoon visit to Baltit Fort (restored by AKCS) for Hunza history and architecture; allow 60–90 minutes. Free time for a proper shower, laundry and bakery treats (try apricot cake). Optional gentle walk to sunset viewpoints over the Hunza River. Dinner in town; vegetarian options are excellent.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Central Hunza village walk (2,500 m): 3–4 hrs easy. A relaxed heritage walk along ancient water channels (burber) from Karimabad towards Hyderabad. Terrain is mostly contouring paths with minor exposure—great for photos of terraced fields, orchards and cliff waterfalls. Learn about gravity-fed irrigation and winter food storage traditions. Carry 1–1.5 litres water and light snacks; cafés are sparse on the route. Back in town, visit a women-run handicraft centre (quality caps, shawls and rugs) and a community-owned café. Optional add-on by vehicle: Attabad Lake viewpoints or Duiker for golden-hour light (extra cost/time). Final shopping and packing for the southbound drive.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Karimabad to Naran via Babusar Pass (4,200 m): 8–9 hrs drive. Depart early. When open (typically Jun–Oct), Babusar Top shortens the route and offers high-meadow views; expect cool, windy conditions at the pass. Outside this window, the fallback is the KKH via Chilas and Mansehra (longer but all-weather). Tea stops are basic; keep hand sanitiser and personal snacks. Reach Naran by early evening, check in, and take a short riverside walk along the Kunhar to loosen legs. Dinner at the hotel; confirm next day’s Taxila timings with the guide.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Naran to Islamabad via Taxila: 7–8 hrs including visit. Drive to the plains and continue to the UNESCO-listed Taxila archaeological zones (museum closed on some public holidays; carry ID for entry). A focused 60–90 minute visit covers Gandharan sculpture highlights and one excavated site such as Sirkap or Jaulian (time permitting). Continue to Islamabad, check in. Farewell dinner at Saidpur Village with Margalla Hill views.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Depart Islamabad. Airport transfer for your flight. If your departure is late evening, luggage storage and a short café stop can be arranged.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Rush Lake has the kind of “how is this real?” beauty that travellers associate with far bigger expeditions: a high, turquoise basin with a skyline of Karakoram giants. We wanted a trek that delivers that altitude-and-horizon feeling without technical climbing, while still allowing a strong day to step up to Rush Peak for the full panorama.
Hunza and Nagar add the human story. The Karakoram Highway, Karimabad’s lanes and Baltit Fort, orchard villages and burber irrigation channels give context before you head into the quiet. Evenings in Hunza—chapshuro, apricot treats, and Rakaposhi glowing at sunset—set the tone. On the trail, the rhythm is simple: steady climbs, crisp nights, clear mornings, and camps set for wide views and sharp stars. Add the overland return and, time allowing, Taxila’s Gandharan heritage, and you have a journey with real range.
This tour suits active travellers who want big Karakoram rewards in a sensible timeframe: a high camp at Rush Lake (4,694 m), an optional non-technical push to Rush Peak, and time in Hunza for Baltit Fort, terrace walks and wide valley views. Most days involve 5–6 hours on mixed mountain terrain, with steady acclimatisation and realistic pacing.
With Asian Geographical you travel in small groups with experienced trek leaders, a strong local team, and clear, well-managed logistics. We handle permits, transport, quality camps and carefully chosen hotels, with thorough kit checks, safety briefings and practical route planning on the Karakoram Highway. Expect straightforward pre-trip advice, fast communication, and dependable in-country support—so you can focus on the walking, the photography, and the views.
Notes: The Rush Lake trek is a high-altitude route and access roads through Hunza and the upper valleys are weather-dependent. The itinerary is planned with built-in flexibility to accommodate any changes.
A 20-day Karakoram trekking holiday following the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia, the meeting point of the region’s greatest peaks: K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums. Walk past Trango Towers and vast granite walls, camp under clear skies, and travel with Asian Geographical expert guides and a professional local crew.
