Epic K2 Concordia Expedition

Islamabad to Islamabad – 20 Days

Walk one of the world’s great glacier valleys to Concordia—where K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums ring the skyline. This is a porter-supported trek, not a climb: no technical skills or crampons are required, but you’ll need solid hill fitness, sure-footedness on rough ground and comfort with camping. Above Askole there are no villages or lodges; we travel self-contained with a well-run camp, kitchen and safety briefings. Most days involve 6–8 hours on moraine and sandy trails, with gradual altitude gains up the Baltoro to Concordia and an optional extension towards K2 Base Camp (conditions allowing).

Expect rugged underfoot conditions rather than steep, sustained ascents. You’ll spend time on the glacier, but almost always on stones and rubble rather than blue ice. Our small-group format, Asian Geographical expert guides and experienced local crew focus on pacing, acclimatisation, hygiene and logistics so you can concentrate on the experience: Trango Towers above Urdukas, dawn light from Goro, and the vast amphitheatre at Concordia—arguably the finest mountain panorama on Earth.

Notes: Islamabad–Skardu flights are famed for close views of Nanga Parbat on clear days but these flights are weather-dependent. This itinerary is designed with built-in flexibility to accommodate any changes.

Highlights

CONCORDIA & K2 PANORAMA: Stand at Concordia, the junction of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers, with K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums, Chogolisa and Mitre Peak encircling camp. Sunrise and sunset transform the amphitheatre; nights are cold and clear. Camping is on moraine, and fresh snowfall is possible even in peak season.

BALTORO GLACIER TREK: Walk classic stages—Paiju, Khoburtse, Urdukas, Goro I/II—on sandy paths and rough moraine. Expect 6–8 hours most days with gradual altitude gains and steady acclimatisation. Underfoot is stony rather than blue ice; poles help. The progression from valley heat to high-glacier cold shows the Karakoram’s scale and changing light.

TRANGO TOWERS & GRANITE SPIRES: Trace some of the world’s most dramatic big walls: Trango group, Uli Biaho, the Cathedrals and Paiju Peak. From the Urdukas terrace, the skyline is superb for photography and quiet viewing. On clearer days Masherbrum appears down-glacier, giving a sense of how the massif surrounds the Baltoro.

BROAD PEAK BC & K2 BC: From Concordia, a long out-and-back day reaches Broad Peak Base Camp and, conditions allowing, K2 Base Camp and the Gilkey Memorial. The Godwin-Austen Glacier is rough and slow; fixed turnaround times protect the group. Alternatively, remain at Concordia for shorter viewpoint walks and unhurried mountain watching.

Why Asian Geographical?

The difference with the Asian Geographical is, that each of our holidays is designed with extreme precision of a mountaineering expedition.

DAY 1

Islamabad

Arrive at Islamabad International Airport, meet our representative outside arrivals, and transfer to your hotel. After check-in, a short tour briefing covers health, permits and baggage logistics for the Karakoram. If time allows, a gentle leg-stretch is possible in the diplomatic enclave. Early night to reset before the mountain flight.

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2

Skardu

Morning flight to Skardu (weather permitting). On a clear run you’ll see the Himalayan–Karakoram skyline, often including Nanga Parbat. On arrival, transfer to Shigar and check in at Serena Shigar Fort, a restored 17th-century complex beside the Shigar River. Afternoon at leisure to hydrate, sort gear and stroll the old lanes; optional walk to the 14th-century Amburiq Mosque if time permits.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3

Skardu

Light acclimatisation day. After breakfast, drive to Skardu and hike the short but stony path to Kharpocho (Skardu) Fort for wide views over the Indus and town—use trekking shoes and carry water. Return via the bazaar to pick up any last-minute items (gloves, buffs, dry bags). Afternoon gear check and trek briefing with your leader covering porter loads, camp routine and hygiene.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

image
Skardu

DAY 4

Jhola Camp

Depart by 4WD along the Shigar Valley, following the Braldu River to Askole—the last permanent village before the Baltoro. Depending on current road status, continue beyond Askole to Korofon by track. From here, either drive or take a short trek to Jhola (Jula) on the far side of the Dumordo River—now normally crossed by a bridge (the old “jhola” cable basket gave the place its name). Camp at Jhola or nearby, where porter teams usually join.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Paiju Camp

Begin the walk up the Braldu valley on sandy, undulating trails with occasional stream crossings (water levels vary by season and time of day). Views open to Bakhor Das and Paiju Peak’s needles as you approach Paiju, a well-serviced camp below the first great views of the Baltoro. Typical walking time is 5–7 hours with breaks; gaiters or sandals help for fords near the Dumordo/side streams if bridges are out. On arrival, set camp, refill and, if permitted, visit the designated washing point.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6

Khoburtse Camp

Leave Paiju and reach the snout of the Baltoro after about an hour. Step onto the moraine and continue on mixed rock and ice with short ups and downs. Classic views open to Trango Towers, Uli Biaho and Paiju Peak; we usually pause near Liligo for an early lunch. The path then trends along the right (true left) rim towards Khoburtse, where camps are sited on lateral moraine platforms above the glacier. Expect 6–7 hours in total with careful foot placement and short regroups to let pack animals pass safely. Porter loads and water refills are managed by the trek crew.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7

Urdukas Camp

A shorter but stony stage. Trek over rough moraine, then climb to the terrace at Urdukas— the last campsite off the ice before the full glacial traverse. The viewpoint above camp frames a superb granite skyline: Trango group, Uli Biaho and the Cathedrals; on a clear afternoon you may glimpse Gasherbrum IV. Typical walking time is 3–5 hours, leaving a protected afternoon for rest, light acclimatisation and kit checks with your leader. Camps here are perched above the Baltoro with outstanding sunset light.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8

Goro II Camp

Today you move fully onto the centre of the Baltoro. The track weaves across rubble ridges and flatter ice, with Masherbrum to the right and the Muztagh peaks to the left. We break at Goro I before continuing 3–4 hours to Goro II, a high, wind-prone camp where temperatures drop quickly once the sun falls. First distant views of the Gasherbrums and Broad Peak usually appear today; underfoot is entirely glacial, requiring steady pace and walking poles. Total 6–7 hours with lunch on the glacier. Today will be the first night camping on ice.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9

Concordia Camp

A landmark day across the upper Baltoro to the famed junction with the Godwin-Austen Glacier—Concordia, long nicknamed the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods”. In good weather K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV and Chogolisa dominate the panorama. Allow 4–6 hours, depending on surface conditions and photo stops. Camp is usually set on moraine at 4,500 m; expect colder nights and the possibility of fresh snowfall even in peak season. Your leader reviews options for tomorrow and sets conservative turnaround times to match conditions and group energy.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10

K2 Base Camp

A flexible day from Concordia. Many trekkers choose the out-and-back to Broad Peak Base Camp (approx. 4–6 km; about 4 hours return) for the best framed view of K2; stronger walkers may continue across the Godwin-Austen towards K2 Base Camp and the Art Gilkey Memorial (allow roughly 8–10 hours total on rough glacial terrain; ascent about 600 m). Conditions vary by season; your guide will confirm safe timings, spacing and cut-offs. Those preferring a lighter day can remain at Concordia for short viewpoint walks.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 11

Concordia Camp

Those who hiked to K2 Base Camp return to Concordia via the Godwin-Austen Glacier, retracing the out-and-back route with set regroup points and steady pacing (about 5–6 hours). Trekkers who remained at Concordia take a lighter acclimatisation day with short viewpoint walks and kit checks. Expect variable surfaces (hard ice, rubble, shallow melt streams); poles and micro-gaiters help with footing. Afternoon at leisure to rehydrate, sort loads and review tomorrow’s timings.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 12

Goro I Camp

Break camp and head down-glacier toward the mid-Baltoro. Views back to K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums fade as Masherbrum and the Muztagh peaks reappear. Underfoot is mixed moraine; pace stays even with breaks to manage layers, water and photos. Typical walking time 5–6 hours, reaching the stony platforms at Goro I for camp. Temperatures drop early once the sun leaves the ice; keep warm layers handy. Crew sets dining tent wind-shadows if conditions are breezy.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 13

Khoburtse

Continue down the Baltoro on moraine to the terrace of Urdukas for an early lunch and a last look at the Trango group, Uli Biaho and the Cathedrals from above the glacier. After a rest, descend back to the ice and follow the lateral moraine line toward Khoburtse (Khoburse). Expect 5–6 hours total with a short climb into camp at the end. This stage often feels warmer and dustier; sun protection and steady hydration are key.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 14

Paiju Camp

Track the true-left rim of the Baltoro toward Paiju, with familiar granite spires—Trango Towers, Uli Biaho and Paiju Peak—leading the skyline. Trails are sandy and undulating with occasional side-stream crossings; leaders space the group to give pack animals priority where paths narrow. Usual trek time 5–6 hours. At Paiju, settle on established pads, replenish water, and (if permitted) use the designated washing area below camp. A celebratory hot drink in the dining tent rounds off the glacier section.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 15

Askole

Break camp and transfer by waiting 4WDs along the Braldu valley toward Askole (road status can vary seasonally; expect basic tracks and dust). On arrival, thank and farewell porter teams, then continue to your lodge/guesthouse. Afternoon free for a wash, gear dry-out and an easy leg-stretch in the village. Your leader reviews the onward plan to Skardu and contingency timings for weather or roadworks.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 16

Skardu

Morning 4WDs retrace the Braldu and Shigar valleys to Skardu. Expect basic tracks, river-cut sections and occasional roadworks; drive time varies with conditions. On arrival, check into your hotel, wash and repack expedition duffels for tomorrow’s flight. The remainder of the day is flexible: light sightseeing in Skardu bazaar or a short walk by the Indus to keep legs moving. Evening trip briefing confirms flight status windows and the contingency plan should weather close the air corridor. (Skardu road/flight logistics are highly condition-dependent; typical 4WD and flight variability is well-planned.)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

image
Skardu

DAY 17

Skardu

If running on schedule, we will take an easy local excursion: the Kachura Lakes—Lower Kachura (Shangrila) and Upper Kachura—a short drive from town and make a gentle recovery day with level lakeside paths and photo stops. (Lower Kachura is commonly known as Shangrila Lake; Upper/Lower Kachura are the two main lakes near Skardu.) If flight is cancelled we will drive to Skardu. Return/arrive at Skardu by late afternoon for a relaxed gear sort, followed by a hosted farewell dinner.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 18

Islamabad

We aim for a morning PIA flight to Islamabad. Operations are visual-rules and remain weather-dependent; schedules can slide or cancel if cloud or winds close the Skardu approach. On a clear day, views are superb. Land in Islamabad, transfer to your hotel, and keep the afternoon free for rest or a short visit to the Faisal Mosque precinct or Saidpur village. Your leader monitors any baggage delays and reconfirms international flight details. (Northern-area flights, including Skardu, are routinely subject to weather.)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 19

Islamabad

If the Skardu–Islamabad flight did not operate, we switch to the overland plan. The Karakoram Highway route typically takes 12–15 hours in good conditions; the Naran–Babusar alternative is seasonal and only viable when the pass is open. Multiple driver changes, meal stops and safety breaks are built in. If we arrive by air on Day 18, then we will keep today light in Islamabad—optional Old Rawalpindi bazaar walk or museum time—ready for tomorrow’s international flight.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Islamabad

DAY 20

Islamabad - Departure

Private transfer to Islamabad International Airport for your homeward flight. Aim to be kerbside three hours before departure; your leader will advise any additional airline-specific requirements. Safe travels.

Meals Included: Breakfast

The story

See a mountain panorama few ever witness. The Baltoro leads you through a corridor of granite spires—Trango, Uli Biaho, the Cathedrals—into the vast glacier junction of Concordia, where K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums ring the skyline. Days progress from warm valley trails to high, dry moraine with huge horizons, hard clarity, and night skies dense with stars. An optional day pushes closer, along the Godwin-Austen, for a direct view of K2’s great pyramid.

This is remote, logistic-heavy country; that’s our strength. Asian Geographical expert guides keep the programme tight—sensible stage lengths, fixed turnaround times, clean camp routines and clear briefings—so energy stays for the experience. Small groups mean personal attention; porter support, reliable tents and hot meals keep you comfortable; planned buffers cover flight or weather changes without derailing the journey.

What To Expect

HIGH-GLACIER WORLD: Over 20 days you’ll move deep into the Karakoram, where scale becomes the story: giant ice valleys, serrated ridges, and nights under a sky that feels startlingly close. Expect simple comforts, big scenery, and a steady, expedition pace.

WALKING & CONDITIONS: Most trekking days run 6–8 hours with gradual altitude gain, but the underfoot reality is rugged: sand, rock and moraine rather than smooth ice. Poles help, dust is common, and temperatures swing from warm valley afternoons to sharp cold at camp.

CONCORDIA & BIG-WALL VIEWS: Concordia is the defining moment—K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums and Chogolisa forming a full amphitheatre at sunrise and sunset. Camps sit on moraine; snow can fall even in peak season, and clear nights can be bitterly cold.

K2 OPTION & TEAM SUPPORT: From Concordia, you’ll have the chance to push to Broad Peak Base Camp and, conditions permitting, K2 Base Camp and the Gilkey Memorial, with strict turnaround times. You travel in a small group with expert guides, a well-run camp team, and carefully planned acclimatisation and safety routines.
