Discover the heart of Laos in this 10-day journey from Vientiane’s historical sites to Luang Prabang’s serene beauty. Designed for visitors seeking cultural and natural experiences, this itinerary invites tourists to trek and hike through jungles, explore remote villages, ride elephants by the Mekong, and witness breathtaking sunsets, embracing Laos’ rich culture and natural wonders.
Start your journey in Luang Prabang, Laos, with a comfortable stay at the Luang Say Residence, a hotel not only luxurious but also philanthropic, particularly with the Luang Prabang Orphanage School (LPOS). This initiative, in partnership with Pack for a Purpose, encourages you to bring along and donate supplies, directly to the local community. After settling in, immerse yourself in Laotian culture with an evening at the Garavek Theatre, where traditional storytelling, music and folklore will introduce you to the richness of Laos. Afterwards, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant to sample authentic Laotian food.
Rise early to participate in the almsgiving ceremony, a cultural highlight, and enjoy a traditional breakfast of sticky rice or other rice dishes from local markets or street vendors. Spend the day cycling or taking a walk through Luang Prabang, visiting temples and engaging with the city’s spiritual heritage. Venture out to Kuang Si Waterfalls, easily accessible by buses from the bus station, where visits to the Free the Bears centre, Buffalo Dairy Farm and Butterfly Park will give you insights into local conservation efforts. End the day with either a sunset on Mount Phousi or a river cruise, both offering unique perspectives of this UNESCO World Heritage city.
Dive into Lao traditions at Ock Pop Tok and participate in a Silk Road seminar on the country’s textile heritage. Try your hand at creating textiles using ancient techniques and natural dyes. In the afternoon, a boat ride will take you to Phad Tad Ke Botanical Gardens, a sanctuary for Laos’ flora and ethnobotany. On your journey to Muang Sing, you will pass through several provinces, offering a glimpse into the diverse landscapes of Northern Laos. Muang Sing is located near the border with China, making it a unique cultural crossroads in the region. End your day in Muang Sing with a visit to Big Brother Mouse, which is located in the town centre, a project to enhance literacy among Laotian youth, where you can participate in language exchange sessions for a meaningful cultural exchange. While in the area, consider visiting nearby hill tribe villages to experience the traditions and daily life of local communities.
Start your day with a visit to The Luang Prabang Orphanage School (LPOS) and see firsthand the impact of your Pack for a Purpose contributions. Continue to immerse yourself in Laos’ cultural richness at the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, where you can explore the country’s ethnic diversity and learn about the historical kingdoms that have shaped Laos’ unique heritage. The day’s journey will take you to the MandaLao Elephant Sanctuary, a haven for elephants rescued from laborious lives. The main reason visitors are drawn here is the opportunity to engage with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, an ethical approach to wildlife interaction that promotes respect and understanding.
Drive to Muang Hiam, a town in the far north region of Laos, serving as the gateway to the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park, which is located near the borders with neighboring countries. Once a land of wild tigers, Muang Hiem is now a hub for eco-tourism and conservation. Discover the town’s history, the local market and the stunning natural surroundings, with trekking routes that reveal the region’s waterfalls and landscapes. Overnight in a simple guesthouse, preparing for the adventures to come in the national park.
Rise early for a day of discovery in Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park. The time spent here offers valuable immersive experiences, allowing you to truly connect with the park’s unique environment. Meet your guide at the visitor centre for a tour of the village and learn about the former poachers turned forest guardians. Spend your day exploring the park through a variety of activities such as hiking along scenic trails, rafting on the river, and observing the diverse bird life. Take a boat ride into the heart of the national park and see the diverse bird life. Settle into your bamboo-hut bungalow and immerse yourself in the park’s history and conservation efforts. The money from your tour goes directly to the ecotourism fund, supporting both conservation and local communities. The highlight of the day is a night safari, a silent drift down the river in search of nocturnal wildlife with experienced rangers. See deer, civets and if lucky wild cats and bears. Back to camp for a night in the jungle, maybe slow loris or sambar deer nearby.
Start the day with wildlife by the river, breakfast with the local sambar deer at Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park. The day continues with a wildlife monitoring activity, contributing to conservation efforts and the local ecotourism development fund. In the afternoon, visit Tham Phiew Cave, a wartime memorial site that played a significant role during the civil war and witnessed intense fighting. Then head to Phonsavanh in Xieng Khuang province. Overnight at Auberge de la Plain des Jarres and prepare for the Plain of Jars, set amidst rolling mountains that define the region's dramatic landscape.
Dive into the heart of Laos’ archaeological wonder, the Plain of Jars, a vast landscape of hundreds of ancient megalithic jars, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region is surrounded by nearby cities that showcase colonial heritage and cultural charm. We spent time exploring the Plain of Jars, immersing ourselves in its history and unique landscape. This journey through time is contrasted with a visit to the UXO Information Centre, where you’ll learn about the lasting impacts of unexploded ordnance from America’s Secret War on Laos, especially on local children and their communities. The day ends with an ascent up Phou Keng Mountain, stone jars in hidden tunnels and caves, remnants of wartime resilience.
Drive back to Luang Prabang, heading south and breaking the journey with a stop at Phou Phiengfa Mountain, which is located along the route for panoramic views of the Laotian countryside. This drive is a time for reflection, to soak in the beauty of the countryside, a contrast to the historical complexities of the previous days.
As the sun rises over Luang Prabang, your journey through Laos’ cultural, historical and natural heritage comes to an end. From the wildlife encounters in the national park to the insights into the country’s past, this expedition has woven together adventure and enlightenment. The independence you experienced—traveling at your own pace and exploring with flexibility—has allowed for a truly self-guided adventure. After breakfast, you’ll be escorted to the airport, with memories and stories of a land that has seen centuries of change.
Designed with a passion for Laos’ profound cultural heritage, majestic natural wonders, and dedication to wildlife conservation, this journey offers a harmonious mix of adventure, exploration, and enlightening experiences in a country renowned for its unique identity and remote, traditional way of life.
Tailored for those captivated by ancient history, community interaction, and nature’s allure—including backpackers seeking authentic adventure—it promises an enriching exploration of UNESCO sites, involvement in elephant conservation, and thrilling jungle night safaris.
Delve into the historic Plain of Jars and aid in community-driven wildlife efforts, blending cultural engagement with ecological discovery amidst this country’s stunning landscapes.
